    It feels a little odd to be writing about a children’s picture from Martin Scorsese, so it’s probably easier to understand when you realize that one of the key figures in Hugo (Paramount, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$54.99 SRP) is pioneering French filmmaker Georges Melies, best known for his legendary “Journey To The Moon”. The film finds Georges as a toy shop owner in a railway station who aids the young title character’s attempt to unlock a mystery left by his father. The film is a fun and – yes – heartwarming pic that makes fine use of the 3D canvas, playing very nicely in the home theater. Bonus materials include making-of featurettes and a look at the real Melies.

    If you’re looking for a purchase for both a Star Wars and a LEGO fan who may be too young for the more complicated sets, the LEGO TIE Interceptor and Death Star ($9.99) is perfect, as the Interceptor is an easy assembly, it comes with a pilot minifig, and the storage case is a hangable Death Star. Fun, right?

    With the release of Top Gear 17 (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP), the home video releases have finally caught up with the show, as the 18th season has just premiered. For this season, however, we find the terrible trio in Italy, Monte Carlo, and even South Africa. Bonus materials include intros, interviews, behind-the-scenes of the celebrity laps, and more.

    Rowan Atkinson returns as the bumbling superspy in Johnny English Reborn (Universal, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), which finds our Clouseau-esque hero called back to active duty after being disgraced, saddled with a partner (the wonderful Daniel Kaluuya), and facing down betrayal from within. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes/ a featurette, and a gag reel.

    Written by the late Dwayne McDuffie, Justice League: Doom (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$24.98 SRP) is the latest in the animated DC comics direct-to-video movies, this time focusing on the devastation that hits the titular superteam when a group of supervillains steals Batman’s secret contingency plans on how to take down his teammates should any go rogue. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, bonus cartoons, and more.

    Take Buffy and mix in heavy metal and The Evil Dead and you’ll get the gonzo horror/comedy of Todd & The Book Of Pure Evil (E1, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), which finds the titular oversexed high-schooler as the world’s only defense against arcane evil unleashable by the also titular tome. The first season set sports audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, outtakes, and more.

    It caused a controversy when it was released, probably because Anonymous (Sony, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) tackles, in a sadly ham-fisted way, the theory that William Shakespeare was not the author of the works history has credited him with. Still, it’s an engaging enough watch, particularly with a cast that includes Rhys Ifans, David Thewlis, Derek Jacobi, and Vanessa Redgrave. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette.

    Tween boys with their eyes glued to Cartoon Network will probably want to pick up the first release from the adventure series Redakai: The Journey Begins (Cartoon Network, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), which finds our heroes racing around the world to keep Kairu energy from falling into evil hands. Ask your kids to explain it. Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes.

    This weekend, we’ve got another story-specific Doctor Who action figure set from the fine folks at Underground Toys. The Keeper Of Traken Collector’s Set (Underground Toys, $49.98) contains a story-specific version of Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor (with source manipulator sphere), the charred and decayed version of The Master, and the Melkur statue. Here’s to more of these themed sets in the future.

    We got a Harry Potter figure last year, so it’s a welcome addition to Medicom’s Real Action Heroes line of 12″ figures that we get the none-Voldemort bane of the young wizard’s existence – Alan Rickman’s beautifully realized Professor Severus Snape ($219.99 SRP). The Rickman sculpt is just about as perfect you can get, matched by the fine detailing on the multiple layers of costuming, from black suit to black outer robes. And yes, he comes with his wand. How could he not?

    It’s a little slow-going at times and uneven, but the good of The Fades (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) far outweighs any deficiencies as it’s a clever take on ghosts and vampire mythology with a nice post-modern twist and an incredible performance from co-star Daniel Kaluuya as the pop-literate friend of our supernatural protagonist who’s faced with the end of the world. Bonus materials include interviews, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

    Are you steampunky? Have you ever wished you could wear a tiny little folding telescope on your ring finger? So you could feel all steampunky and adventurous and ingenious? Well, Thinkgeek brings you Captain Jules’ Extraordinary Telescope Ring ($29.99), which is exactly what you need – a collapsible telescope (and compass!) that you can wear on your finger. Yeah. That’s cool.

    I’m sure it’s just a personal hang-up of mine, but I’m not much of a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, especially as he’s somehow become the go-to guy for vintage biopics of egomaniacal men. The latest is Clint Eastwood’s otherwise nicely made J. Edgar (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), which dives into the ultimately flawed grand personality behind the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, and his political kingdom of information.

    Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s big Tintin film is about to hit home video, and the massive amounts of development and concept art that went into making it is presented in The Art Of The Adventures Of Tintin (Weta/HarperCollins, $39.99 SRP). And, if you get the book directly from Weta, you get exclusive replicas of the three parchment scraps that, when aligned, give the coordinates to find Red Rackham’s treasure. And for those with a fancy iPad, the publishers have put out an absolutely phenomenal app version of the book, with every piece of art enlargeable, interactive turnarounds, artist interviews, and even clips from the film.

    And speaking of incredible behind-the-scenes books, now that the massive 8-film series has wrapped, you can explore all of the cinematic magic that went into making JK Rowling’s boy wizard come to life with Harry Potter: Page To Screen – The Complete Filmmaking Journey (Harper Design, $75.00 SRP). Comprehensive (and large), you get a look at everything it took to create the films, from casting and special effects to release – it’s all in there.

    For years, Newmarket Press has been putting out some quite nice making-of and screenplay books for various films, and this Oscar season brings a pair of tomes from this year’s nominees. First up is Hugo: The Shooting Script (Newmarket Press, $19.99 SRP), the latest from director Martin Scorsese. Also available is a look behind Steven Spielberg WWI epic – War Horse: The Making Of The Motion Picture (Newmarket Press, $34.99 SRP).

    I wasn’t expecting much, which is probably why I was pleasantly surprised by the working man’s revenge flick Tower Heist (Universal, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), which finds everyday folks (with the likes of Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Gabourey Sidibe, and Casey Affleck) getting back at a Wall Street swindler (Alan Alda). Maybe that’s because this comedy is directed by the loathsome Brett Ratner. But hey, a decent flick every 10 years is understandable. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, alternate endings, deleted scenes, featurettes, and more.

    You can watch Tudors and French Cardinals all you want, but in Italy the power center also had a family name, and it’s that powerful dynasty that’s the subject of Borgia Faith and Fear: Season One (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), as we look at the depraved Machiavellian center of the Catholic Vatican, Rodrigo Borgia.

    It’s no Shrek, which I see as a definite plus for spin-off film Puss In Boots (Dreamworks, Rated PG, 3D Blu-Ray-$27.99 SRP), which finds Antonio Banderas reprising his feline lothario roll for a bit of a romp that finds him going up against the nefarious Jack & Jill. As usual for recent Dreamworks animated fare, the use of 3-D is rather enjoyable, and carries over well to a home theater presentation. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, featurettes, games, and more.

    Fighting the nefarious likes of Simon Bar Sinister and Riff Raff, the dated though still fun cartoons featured in the 10-disc Underdog: Complete Collector’s Edition (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$69.97 SRP) are worth introducing to the kids in your life. Bonus materials include audio commentaries, a featurette, and additional cartoons.

    A pair of Showtime series are dropping their latest seasons with the arrival of post-prison new life in the Big Apple Weeds: Season Seven (Lionsgate, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.97 SRP) and a post-confrontation Nurse Jackie: Season Three (Lionsgate, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.97 SRP). Both sport commentaries, featurettes, gag reels, and more.

    Last week we featured Underground Toys’ collector’s set focusing on the villains of William Hartnell’s First Doctor, and this week we’ve got an action figure set which brings together a trio of Jon Pertwee’s with the Enemies Of The Third Doctor ($49.99 SRP). First and foremost, we get an Auton from the 3rd Doctor’s debut story, “Spearhead From Space”. Then we get the fallen Time Lord Omega from “The Three Doctors”, which just so happens to be coming out in a new special edition DVD very soon. Finally, we get the monstrous swamp-dwelling Drashig from “Carnival Of Monsters”. Here’s hoping they continue this line of collector’s sets with the other 8 Doctors… Though, granted, it might be a little hard to do with the 8th Doctor.

    I’m not entire surely what Faustian deal the folks at Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles have entered into in order to keep delivering truly stunning 12″-scale collectibles, but each new one brings a fresh rounds of “oohs” and “aahs” for everything from the masterful sculpting to the pitch-perfect scale costume reproductions. The latest cinematic legend to get the platinum treatment of their deluxe DX line (with moveable eyes and more accessories than you can shake a stick at) is the 1989 Michael Keaton Batman ($239.99). From the rubber batsuit to the leather cape, the costume is exactly as you remember it, right down to the jagged-bottom bat symbol on his chest. The figure also comes with 3 different swappable mouths (closed, pursed, and bloodied), batarang, throwing stars, grappling guns, communicator, and more, plus a light-up base featuring the bat symbol. Incredible. I can’t wait to see their upcoming Jack Nicholson Joker.

    It’s a bit bloated and unwieldy, but I have to admit that I have quite a fondness for Richard Attenborough’s biopic Chaplin (Lionsgate, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$19.99 SRP), starring Robert Downey Jr as the Little Tramp – and his wonderful performance alone makes the film worth watching. Bonus materials include featurettes and a brief Chaplin home movie.

    Got more kitchen utensils than space? Countertops and drawers at a premium? How brilliant is the Click n Cook ($34.99) modular spatula system, which features 5 various-sized spatulas and a detachable handle in a conveniently small stand that allows you to swap spatulas with a simple click (and save space!). Brilliant.

    Those wonderful purveyors of fine comic appreciation over at Twomorrows have decided to focus on the creator of the landmark comic series Bone with Modern Masters Volume 25: Jeff Smith (Twomorrows, $15.95 SRP), which – like previous must-have volumes in the series – contains an in-depth, comprehensive interview with Smith, as well as dozens of pieces of art.

    The animation isn’t the best, but what Hoodwinked (Weinstein Company, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$24.99 SRP) lacks in visual flair it more than makes up for with a punchy script and catchy clutch of songs, all of which has found its way to high definition. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, and a music video.

    It’s no Broadcast News, but Morning Glory (Paramount, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP) does have the fun of the 80s TV flick Switching Channels with a touch of Working Girl, as it revolves around a young woman’s attempt to wrangle a last place mess of a national morning show as its new executive producer. And, best of all, it features Harrison Ford in an all-too-rare comedic turn as a veteran newsman who becomes the new morning host opposite Diane Keaton. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and a deleted scene.

    Oh, Warner Archive. I do so love how you’re releasing every marginal and obscure Hanna-Barbera cartoon in your vast library. So thank you for the a release like the set containing the complete runs of both The Space Kidettes & Young Samson (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP). Yes. That’s right.

    It’s not as well put together as the UK original, but there’s certainly some interesting genealogical twists and turns to be found in the 1st season of the US Who Do You Think You Are? (Acorn, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP), which finds celebrities tracing their family trees. The first season features the ancestral explorations of Sarah Jessica Parker, Emmitt Smith, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Broderick, Brooke Shields, Susan Sarandon, and Spike Lee.

    It’s no Rocky, but there is a charm to The Fighter (Paramount, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as a pair of pugilistic brothers who reunite for a title bout that could save their family and their community. Is redemption for both in the offing? What do you think? Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, and deleted scenes.

    Wrap up the second half of Batman: The Brave And The Bold‘s first season (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) with the next 13 episodes full of action and good-natured crime-fighting absolutely loaded with gust stars, from Booster Gold to Aquaman.

    I find Clint Eastwood’s films can be hit-or-miss for me, with every great flick like Unforgiven matched by a disappointing one like Gran Torino. His stab at the supernatural, Hereafter (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is one of the latter, as I could never become invested in the touchy-feely tale of a man with a connection to the afterlife (Matt Damon) and a journalist (Cecile de France) seeking answers. The sole bonus is the documentary The Eastwood Factor, which looks at his career at Warners.

    Hal-shark. Half-octopus. All schlock. Yeah, that pretty much sums up Roger Corman’s Sharktopus (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$24.99 SRP), and there’s really not much else that needs to be said about it. Just… Sharktopus.

    Don’t have enough 12″ Star Wars figures filling your house yet? Well, Medicom (via those nifty nellies at Sideshow Collectibles) has released another addition to their Real Action Heroes line, this time featuring the intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett ($149.99) as he appeared before his untimely ingestion by the Sarlaac Pit in Return Of The Jedi. The details – from the tools in his pouches to this Wookie-braid trophies – are amazing, and the overall effect is pretty spot-on. Do you want this on your shelf? Yes, you want this on your shelf.

    They rebuilt him… Better… Stronger… Faster… And now, after an interminably long wait, The Six Million Dollar Man (Time Life, Not Rated, DVD-$239.95) has finally arrived on DVD. As if that weren’t enough, Time Life has delivered the complete 5-season run in one massive set, which includes all 3 pilot films, all 3 reunion films, the Bionic Woman crossover episodes, newly-recorded cast interviews, and alternate syndication edits of the pilots. All in all, it’s 40 discs worth of bionic fun… So plenty to keep you occupied during the long winter ahead.

    As a child in the early 80’s I remember the magical joy of coloring pieces of thin plastic that, when cut out and put in the oven, would shrink and thicken into tiny little 2-D plastic figurines. Yes, I’m speaking of Shrinky Dinks ($4.99), and thanks to the fine folks at Thinkgeek, I’m able to introduce my nephews to the joy of heat-shrinky plastic.

    In the mid-60’s, a trio of producers named Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider, and Steve Blauner stepped from the surging counterculture and into the mainstream conservative milieu of Hollywood and crafted a definitive TV property with the manufactured pop band/TV show The Monkees. Seeking to move into films, they developed a decidedly unorthodox film for The Monkees written by good friend and Corman regular Jack Nicholson. After it bombed miserably, they hit paydirt with an era-defining film – Easy Rider. High definition version of both those films – plus the rest of their output (Five Easy Pieces, Drive, He Said, A Safe Place, The Last Picture Show, & The King Of Marvin Gardens) – in the box set America Lost & Found: The BBS Story (Criterion, Not Rated/Rated R, Blu-Ray-$124.95 SRP). In addition to the remastered films themselves, the set includes audio commentaries, documentaries, screen tests, outtakes, interviews, TV/radio spots, trailers, and a collectible booklet.

    For decades, Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece – a visual and conceptual feast that his inspired scores of filmmakers – has been a fractured film, with whole chunks of footage and sequences that were in the debut cut deemed lost forever. Well, never say never, as recent discoveries have allowed the fine folks at Kino to assemble the complete Metropolis (Kino, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP), which they are making available in high definition. The print quality on some of the formerly lost material doesn’t quite match the sparkling extant footage, but that in no way negates the wonder of watching the film as it was intended to be seen, particularly after all these years. Bonus materials include a recording of the original score, a 50-minute documentary, an interview with the curator of the Buenos Airen museum where the footage was found, and the 2010 re-release trailer.

    Earlier this year, Kino also began releasing its extensive Buster Keaton collection in high definition, with the result being a trio of must-have releases for any aficionado of cinematic comedy – Steamboat Bill Jr., The General, and a double-feature of Sherlock Jr. & Three Ages (Kino, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP each). All four feature multiple score choices, featurettes, intros, and more.

    When HBO’s brilliantly dark western Deadwood began its first season, the time period within the series was only a few weeks following the massacre of Custer’s troops in 1876. Into the lawless South Dakotan town rode two men – one a bitter ex-lawman, and the other a man looking to start a new life – and both ran afoul of the local heavy who owns half the town. What followed was an epic drama of operatic heights, and one you can watch in its entirety in high definition with Deadwood: The Complete Series (HBO, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$209.98 SRP). The 13-disc set features all 36 episodes, audio commentaries, featurettes, interviews, and an exclusive bonus disc with creator David Milch discussing the season’s conclusion, a historical featurette on the real Deadwood, a Q&A with the cast & creative team, the Al Swearengen audition reel, and a 360-degree tour of Deadwood.

    Your perennial holiday viewing just got a high definition upgrade with the Blu-Ray release of The Original Christmas Classics box set (Classic Media, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$44.95 SRP), featuring the Rankin Bass specials Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman, and Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town. Yes, you know you’ll be getting this.

    Killing time between now and when the globe-trotting Cars 2 comes out next summer? Well, you can dip into brand new adventures featuring everyone’s favorite hillbilly tow truck in Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales (Walt Disney, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP), which features 9 short subjects, plus intros, featurettes, and more.

    The complete runs of both the classic Batman and Superman animated series have already made their debut as box sets, as well as Justice League, so the last to get the treatment arrives with Batman Beyond: The Complete Series (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$99.98 SRP). The 9-disc set contains all 52 episodes, plus commentaries, retrospectives, a collector’s booklet, and a bonus disc with the documentary Secret Origin: The Story Of DC Comics and a trio of new featurettes.

    It’s not really a brilliant series, but Gerry Anderson’s Space: 1999 (A&E, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$99.95 SRP) is one of those canon sci-fi series that everyone should see at least once, even if you might walk away wondering what all of the fuss is about. It does look better than ever in high definition, as you can now watch via the complete 1st season set, containing 24 episodes plus loads of bonus material, including commentaries, featurettes, documentaries, interviews, and much more.

    It’s certainly not as well-known or well-loved as shows like Space: 1999 or Thunderbirds, but completionists are sure to rejoice at the arrival of Gerry Anderson’s Space Precinct (Image, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) on DVD, even if it plays like a low budget Alien Nation.

    As the little Fockers will be making their way to the big screen shortly, it makes sense that Blu-Rays of Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers (Universal, Rated PG-13, Bly-Ray-$26.98 SRP each are making their way to shelves, both of which contain featurettes, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, and outtakes.

    We’re now into the second season, and I’ve pretty much written off Parks And Recreation (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) as an awkward, failed comedy that still hasn’t discovered what it wants to be, outside of another Office. Which is a shame, because the cast deserves so much better. The 4-disc set contains all 24 episodes, plus deleted scenes, featurettes, and bloopers.

    Most people think of Romeo + Juliet or Moulin Rouge when they think of Baz Luhrmann and over look the dance-happy Strictly Ballroom (Miramax, Rated PG, DVD-$19.99 SRP), but it’s actually his most straightforward and watchable. Bonus materials on the new special edition include an audio commentary, featurettes, and a deleted scene.

    It’s been a long string of single-disc releases leading up to the release of Spongebob Squarepants: Season 6 Part 2 (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP), whose 2 discs contain 23 episodes, featurettes, and shorts. So yes, your kids can be fully immersed in Spongebob this holiday season.

    Beginning after his emigration to the Big Apple in 1971, Lennon NYC (A&E, Not Rated, DVD-$24.95 SRP) looks at the new, post-Beatles life John Lennon forged for himself as a husband and a father, making music infrequently.     The Warner Archive has decided to celebrate the holidays be bringing together the holiday episodes of everything from The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father and Alice to Mama’s Family and Dr. Kildare in the Classic TV Christmas Collection (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.95). The 4-disc set contains 10 episodes total.

    The Warner Archive Collection continues to release titles no sane fan would ever think they’d eventually get their hands on, and I’d say the complete animated spin-off of The Dukes Of HazzardThe Dukes (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.95). The 4-disc set contains all 20 episodes.

    In an attempt to further turn themselves into Spike, the History Channel’s Human Weapon (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.95 SRP) pairs a martial artist and an ex-football player on a journey to learn different forms of combat, from karate to stickfighting, while also journeying across the globe and manhandling relics. Oh, and there’s CGI! The set contains all 16 first season episodes.

    I’ve become less and less interested in seeing Tom Cruise on screen in recent years, and was hoping that the True Lies-esque bit of a blast thrill ride Knight And Day (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) would win me back over, but instead I got an amiable enough actioner about a small toen girl (Cameron Diaz) who gets mixed up with a fugitive super-spy (guess who) that leaves practically no impression after it’s over. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes.

    After Santa and his canine BFF travel to New York and the big man loses his memory, it’s up to the doggie to make sure Christmas is achieved in the saccharine sweet The Search For Santa Paws (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP). Well, I’m sure the kids will eat it up… Or at least be babysat by it. Bonus materials include a featurette, a music video, and a the standard DVD.

    You know how long it’s been since Rush Hour (New Line, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$24.98 SRP) – the action flick that made household names out of Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker – came out? Long enough that there’s a blurb from both Ebert and Siskel on the cover of this new high definition release. Doesn’t seem like it should be that long ago, does it? Well, here it is, sporting audio commentaries, featurettes, music videos, a trailer, and more.

    For every surprisingly enjoyable bad idea like Pirates of the Caribbean comes a misfire dud like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which takes How To Train Your Dragon’s Jay Baruchel and makes him the new apprentice to sorcerer Nicolas Cage, who’s channeling both Keanu Reeves’ Neo and a drunken drifter. I’m sure you’ll eventually catch this film on cable, entirely by accident, and when you do – you might want to change the channel. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

    Real-life lovers Drew Barrymore and Justin Long have gone down the path of many actor couples by immortalizing their relationship as an onscreen duo, with their particular vehicle being Going The Distance (New Line, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), about a bicoastal pair of lovers who decide to make a go of their long distance relationship after a summer fling in New York City. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Rob Reiner shoots straight down the middle with his amiable adaptation of young love novel Flipped (Warner Bros., Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), about a pair of 7th graders who are coming to realize that they love each other in a “destined to” kind of way – Well, actually, the girl knew since second grade, but through a twisty path, the boy comes to fall for her as well. Bonus materials include behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    It’s no Ben 10, but Cartoon Network’s Generator Rex (Cartoon Network, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) is certainly constructed to try and hit all of the same buttons with the kids, right down to a super-powered kid – in this case, a 15-year-old boy/weapon made of nanites – fighting the big bad world. The 2-disc set contains 9 episodes.

    Part of me cringes to say this, but I’ve begun to think that YouTube sensation Fred Figglehorn is this young generation’s Pee Wee Herman, particularly after seeing the feature-length Fred: The Movie (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), which finds the gratingly-voiced teen attempting to find his former-neighbor-but-just-moved-to-a-new-house crush, Judy, while avoiding neighbor bully Kevin. It’s not nearly as funny or polished as Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, but it does play to the a lot of the same absurdist man-child qualities. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, and more.

    As always, it’s rather pointless to criticize the Twilight movies, as the rabid, massive audience care’s not what anyone has to say about their beloved pap-fest, and the same rule applies to Eclipse (Summit, Rated PG-13, DVD-$26.99 SRP), which features more shirtless wonder for teens and 40-somethings. The 2-disc set contains audio commentaries, a 6-part making-of documentary, deleted/extended scenes, music videos, and a photo gallery.

    Like Citizen Kane and Casablanca, the original King Kong (Warner Bros., Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP) is one of the many gems in the Warner Bros. library. While we don’t have our high definition Kane yet, the restoration and mastering done on this new Kong is simply breathtaking, and give me high hopes for their treatment of Welles’ legendary flick. Bonus features on this new edition include an audio commentary, a 7-part documentary, test footage with Ray Harryhausen commentary, the lost “Spider-Pit” sequence, a spotlight on producer Merian C. Cooper, and the theatrical trailer.

    Most geeks love pizza. Most geeks love Star Trek. Well, the fine folks at Thinkgeek have realized both of these truths and constructed an item which melds the two together – the Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter ($24.99). That’s right – you can now cut your Italian pie with the forward section of the USS Enterprise, fashioned in laser-etched stainless steel.

    It’s quite depressing to realize, while re-watching the DVD of the brilliant second season of Party Down (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$29.97 SRP), that Starz cancelled the series, and this is the last we’ll see of the dysfunctional caterers. Bonus materials are limited to a promo and a gag reel, which is a shame.

    It’s not as strong a comedic romp as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but the Aldous Snow spin-off Get Him To The Greek (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) – about a junior record exec (Jonah Hill) tasked with delivering the off-the-wagon Snow to a concert at the titular theater – is an enjoyable vehicle for Russell Brand, and actually makes me look forward to his take on Arthur. Also, Colm Meaney plays Aldous’s father. More Colm Meaney, I say. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, alternate intro/ending, featurettes, deleted scenes, gag reels, and music performances.

    It seems to be taking forever, but slowly but surely the US DVD releases are catching up with the new episodes, so picking up Top Gear 13 (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) beings you that much closer. The 3-disc set contains all 7 episodes of the only car show that could make someone as apathetic about cars as I am a diehard fan. Bonus materials include additional footage and interviews.

    The Warner Archive collection has been great about releasing some deep catalogue titles, but also some much-desired flicks that have limited commercial appeal because, to put it kindly, they weren’t that good. Of the fantastic deep catalogue material, we have something like The Robert Benchley Miniatures Collection (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.95), which brings together all 30 of the brilliant, hilarious observational shorts that Benchley did for MGM from 1935-1944. On the not-so-good-but-people-still-want-it side, you’ve got the Chevy Chase/Carrie Fisher/Billy Barty little people comedy Under The Rainbow (Warner Bros., Rated PG, DVD-$19.95), the Peter Sellers/Brit Ekland bullfighting dud (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.95), and Paul Simon’s painfully boring (but with a great soundtrack) The BoboOne Trick Pony (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$19.95).

    It’s not the Blu-Ray set that some of us were hoping for, but Secret Agent AKA Danger Man: The Complete Collection (A&E, Not Rated, DVD-$99.95 SRP) is a comprehensive gathering of Patrick McGoohan’s pre-Prisoner spy series, containing all 86 episodes, including the two-part color finale.

    While we’re all waiting for the release of the next full season set, let’s relive some of the finest adventures of South Park‘s most naïve little boy with A Little Box Of Butters (Comedy Central, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP), which collects 13 remastered episodes (now in widescreen), plus a lost chapter of Butters’ “The Poop That Took A Pee”, a WWBD bracelet, an Inspector Butters badge, a necklace, and more.

    If you’d like to see an absolutely superb performance by David Bowie, look no further than Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Criterion, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP), wherein he plays a British officer held prisoner by the Japanese in World War II in a film that’s like a more intense, slightly erotic Bridge On The River Kwai. Now presented in high definition, bonus materials include a vintage featurette, a 1996 documentary, interviews, the trailer, and a booklet.

    One would have hopes that the 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Concerts (Time Life, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) held in 2009 to commemorate the museums birthday would have been an event to remember, but nothing seems to really click, from lackluster performances to a line-up that makes you miss those that couldn’t (or wouldn’t) be there all the more.

    The 10th season of CSI (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$79.99 SRP) marks the arrival of Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Ray Langstrom, shaking up the calcification process that has been overtaking the show over the past few years. The 7-disc set includes audio commentaries, featurettes, and the crossover episodes with the Miami & New York CSIs.

    Soundtrack fans have a trio of new titles to fill out their collections this week, courtesy of the fine folks at Silva Screen Records. The newest is Ben Affleck’s The Town, with music by Harry Gregson-Williams & David Buckley, followed by Brad Fiedel’s score for Terminator 2 and Paul Giovanni’s soundtrack to the original Wicker Man (Silva Screen Records, $16.98 SRP each).

    I remember loving them as a kid, so I’m eager to show my nephews the animated adaptations of Beverly Cleary’s beloved stories included in the Ralph Mouse Collection (Scholastic, Not Rated, DVD-$24.95 SRP), because how could they not like a mouse riding a motorcycle?

    After the abysmal eighth season, I had some hope that the bonus, ultimately final ninth season of Scrubs (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP) might be a streamline return to the blend of comedy and drama that had attracted me to the show in its early, wonderful seasons. Sadly, the goofball, live action Family Guy antics continued, and the replacement cast, bolstered by some returning faces and a lingering Zach Braff, never really gelled into anything worth watching. A shame. Bonus features include featurettes, deleted scenes, and bloopers.

    I’ve been less-than-impressed with the ever-changing visual style of the DC Universe direct-to-video animated films, but at least they’ve reversed a further negative in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP) by having the good sense to reinstate Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly as the voices of the legendary superheroes (even if they still insisted on recasting Apocalypse). The story itself finds everyone fighting over a mysterious girl who crashes to Earth in a Kryptonian ship. If you guessed she’s to become Supergirl, you’d be right. Bonus materials include a look at the character of Darkseid, a Green Arrow short, a featurette on the New Gods, 4 bonus cartoons featuring Darkseid, and more.

    It’s easy to look back at it as a piece of soul kitsch, but the one thing you can say about The Best Of Soul Train (Time Life, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) is that the show, over its 35 year history, did include an incredible array or performers, from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield to James Brown and Aretha Franklin.

    I fell out of love with Family Guy years ago, so I really haven’t been enthused enough to dip into its spin-off, The Cleveland Show (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), but for those who have and enjoyed it, you’ll want to pick up the first season set, featuring all 21 episodes, audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, a music video, a table read, and more.

    Leaving box stores behind but not abandoning fans, Warners has shifted the second season of Falcon Crest (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$49.95) over to their on-demand Warner Archive Collection, so if you’re hooked and want to find out what happens next to the Channing wine dynasty, look no further than the 22 episodes on this 6-disc set.

    Using CG recreations, both Battle 360 (History Channel , Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.95 SRP) & Patton 360: The Complete Season One (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.95 SRP) take an in-depth, comprehensive, in-the-thick-of-it look at the battles that defined the second World War.

    After teasing fans with a best-of collection a few years back, the complete, digitally remastered first season of Sgt. Bilko (aka The Phil Silvers Show) (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) is now available – and if you’ve never seen the show and consider yourself a fan of comedy, you must rectify the oversight immediately. Not only is the writing sterling, but Phil Silvers is a brilliant comic performer, elevating the material and making his role as a con-happy army sergeant iconic. The 5-disc set contains all 34 episodes, plus audio commentaries, the original network opening, original cast commercials, the lost audition show, and Phil Silver’s guest-starring episode of The Lucy Show.

    I love bubbles. My nephews love bubbles. Who doesn’t love bubbles? Well, perhaps people who hate Lawrence Welk. Still – most people love bubbles. How about really big bubbles? Surely big bubbles equal big fun. And it’s true – big bubbles equal big fun. How can you make big bubbles easily?     If you’ve yet to see the brilliant Stephen Fry’s equally brilliant journey across the United States in the 6-part documentary Stephen Fry In America (BFS, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), please rectify that grievous oversight at your earliest available moment. Accompany Fry as he visits all 50 states, encountering stereotypes and people, places & events that undermine established stereotypes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available (and looks pretty darn good).

    I never thought that I’d eventually get to watch a high definition version of GI JOE: The Movie (Shout Factory, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$26.97 SRP), restored to its intended theatrical ratio. Yes, remember that it was supposed to be a theatrical feature, but when the big screen outing of Transformers tanked, GI JOE: The Movie was consigned to a direct-to-video release. Granted, the print still looks like a TV cartoon from the 80’s, but it is cleaner than it’s ever been, and the sound has been cleaned up significantly. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and those good ol’ PSAs we know and love so much. Also, for fans, the bonus standard DVD includes contains the flick in full frame, as we all remember it.

    Leave it to Warner Bros. to take an incredible legacy and talent base for their animated DC properties and continue to spin out neither here nor there direct-to-DVD features that recast already brilliant actors for the sake of gimmicky stunt casting. So it goes with Batman: Under The Red Hood (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP), which finds yet another voice for Batman & The Joker, leaving behind the iconic Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill, in a blah story about the Gotham arrival of a vigilante with no ethics, Red Hood. Bonus materials include featurettes, a quartet of Batman: The Animated Series episodes presented by Bruce Timm, and a Jonah Hex animated short.

    The one thing I can say about the otherwise flat, lifeless, and sadly boring remake of Clash Of The Titans (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is that, stripped of its horrid 3-D conversion for home viewing, it’s a least a brighter affair. Bonus materials include an alternate ending and a featurette on Sam Worthington.

    Long available in the complete series set, high definition enthusiasts can now pick up the penultimate 3rd season of Battlestar Galactica (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$88.98 SRP). The 5-disc set contains audio commentaries, video blogs, deleted scenes, featurettes, and webisodes.

    As Stallone’s big action flick The Expendables is right around the corner, it’s no surprise that there’d be a tie-in release of Rambo: The Complete Collector’s Set (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$54.99 SRP), which contains all 4 Rambo films in high definition (though the most recent, Rambo, is just Disc 1 of the original 2-disc set). Bonus materials are the same as the last special edition.

    I suppose it must be a sign of soft sales at retail that the 3rd season of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$24.95) has been demoted to Warners On-Demand service. But I suppose fans should just be happy they can get the 10 episodes that comprise this season anywhere.

    Just in time for the healthcare debate but ignored in theaters, Repo Men (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) stars Jude Law and Forest Whitaker as Remy & Jake, a pair of near future repossession men who reclaim organ transplants when their recipients fail to make their payments. But after Remy gets a new heart after an on-the-job accident and falls behind in his own payments, Jake comes after him. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, fake ads, and a visual effects featurette.

    Largely depressing but endlessly fascinating, Life After People: The Complete Season 2 (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) presents another 10 episodes packed with post-apocalyptic degeneration. Like I said – irresistibly depressing.

    After 7 seasons and years of releases, the DVD journey of Sabrina The Teenage Witch (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) comes to an end with the final season. The 3-disc set contains all 21 episodes, plus the TV movie Sabrina Goes To Rome.

    Besides barreling through introducing him to a load of classic films, I’ve been looking for activities that my 6-year-old nephew will enjoy while the summer heat gets a bit too hot to make outside activities viable. And what I’ve found is that the movie-watching activity can be combined with major construction projects. Those major construction projects, you won’t be terribly surprised to find out, are LEGO-based.

    This week, we tackled the immense Star Wars: Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser ($199.99), thanks to our good friends at ThinkGeek.

    This is the largest LEGO project we’ve tackled, coming in at 1,170 pieces… A good deal of them very, very tiny. Once the box was opened and the bags set out, the enormity of the task was a bit daunting.

    Of course, I spent far too much time wondering why Grand Chancellor Palpatine looked so much like Christopher Walken.

    And finally – after three whole movies – we came to the end, and my nephew was eager to explore all of the nooks and crannies, including Palpatine’s office (with a small box holding Death Star plans hidden away in the bow).

    If you’re only knowledge of the character is the equally underrated film, do yourself a favor and pick up the beautifully presented Rocketeer: The Complete Adventures (IDW, $29.99 SRP), which collects every bit of Dave Stevens thrilling, gorgeous comics about the high-flying hero, along with rare promotional art.

    If you go into Cop Out (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) will an appreciation of the buddy cop flicks that littered the 80’s, then you know what the film paying homage to, and it’s a fun homage at that. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan fill the buddy shoes this go round, in a flick where plot is not nearly as important as the vibe. The main bonus feature is the “Maximum Comedy Mode”, which drops picture-in-picture Kevin Smith into a guide tour of the film incorporating commentary, alternate/deleted footage, and even Seann William Scott.

    The term “classic” gets thrown about with abandon nowadays, and I’d certainly question its application I the “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” line of catalogue releases, but there’s no doubt that “cult” is more than applicable. The latest pair of additions to the line are Forbidden World, & Galaxy Of Terror (Shout Factory, Rated R, DVD-$19.93 SRP each), both of which are packed with bonus materials, including commentaries, featurettes, interviews, and more.

    What do you get one a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost shack up together? The supernatural Three’s Company dramedy that is the BBC’s Being Human (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP), the first season of which is now available. The 2-disc set contains all 13 episodes, plus featurettes, deleted scenes, video diaries, and more.

    It’s gut level humor and certainly not high-brow, but its base nature is probably why my nephews got such a kick out of Cats & Dogs (Warner Bros., Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$24.98 SRP), which pits the two eternal enemies against each other in a high tech battle beneath the oblivious noses of the human world. The new high definition edition contains an audio commentary, featurettes, storyboard comparisons, and concept sketches.

    The residents of the Springfield Retirement Castle will be delighted at the release of Matlock: Season Five (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP). Heck, this season even brings the down-home southern lawyer out to Hollywood, and gives him his first 2-hour “Matlock Movie Mystery”. The 6-disc set contains all 21 episodes.

    You know, I kind of dug The Losers (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) – It’s a big, dumb, goofy, fun action film of the kind made popular in the 80’s, when big guns, big booms, and quips ruled the day. The plot is largely irrelevant – just imagine it as a little bit Magnificent Seven and a little bit A-Team. Bonus materials include featurettes and a deleted scene.

    Get all goofy with Batman, Superman, and all the rest down at the Hall of Justice with the second volume of Super Friends!: Season One (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), featuring another 8 episodes across 2 discs. Meanwhile, back at the… Well, you know…

    Fear for the future of civilization after viewing even one minute of Jersey Shore: Season One (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP), and hope that the sheer stupidity on display will remove the cast from the gene pool in the near future.     No matter what your opinion is on the validity of Global Warming, you can’t deny that recycling is big business these days. Everywhere you look, more and more homes and businesses are separating cardboard and glass, paper and plastic. All so that it can be taken, broken down and turned into something new. Each time this happens, manufacturers polish up the goods, make them shine and tell you that the “new” product contains a certain percentage of recycled material so that no one will complain about a lack of quality whether it’s perceived or whether it’s real. Recycled batteries, ink cartridges and plastic bottles are all a part of our every day life now. But the thing is… so are movies.

    It’d be all too easy for me to say that there are no new ideas left in the movie making industry, and there are days when it feels like that’s the case. But the plain and simple truth is that studios follow the money and people like to spend money on what’s familiar rather than what’s original.

    Even in the world of movies, brand loyalty is a powerful tool. It’s almost a guarantee for a sure fire hit if you revamp an old franchise. Whether the success is financial or artistic is up for debate. Every time that we hear of a plan to unleash a brand new Predator or Alien or Bond or Batman franchise on the world, phrases like “reboot” and “reimagining” are bandied about by studios partly to cash in on the pre-built loyalty that the brand has and partly so that the ardent online fans of the original franchise or movie will start to react.

    Each and every time a reboot or reimagining is announced and details are leaked, there’s a group of people somewhere who will be outraged by the news and snap into action to protest or petition against it. But let’s face it, it’s not a bad situation for the studios to be in even if the fans do protest and organise online petitions. Bad publicity is free publicity. And any free publicity is good publicity.

    “Reboot” and “reimagining” are words that we’ve been taught to use when we’re describing old-made-new-again movies. They sound a lot better than saying “money for old rope”. But on the other side of that coin, we’ve also been taught to hide the truth on the rare occasion that an original idea is presented to us. Whether it’s because of a lack of advertising dollars, or because it’s the actual truth I can’t say but how many times in the past few years have you heard a movie described as a “word of mouth” movie?

    A list of my favourite movies would without doubt include The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, Serenity, The Princess Bride, The Fountain, The Dark Knight and Clerks II. Out of that list, the only movie that wasn’t based on either a novel or comic book or wasn’t a sequel to another movie, a continuation of a TV series or a reboot of an existing franchise is The Fountain. The Fountain is, in most every way imaginable, an original movie. It has a superb cast and a fantastic director. What it didn’t have was a saleable premise, an established name or an Irish general cinema release. Possibly, the film is so original that the cinemas in Ireland couldn’t handle it, or thought that the audiences couldn’t. Like a lot of people, I only heard about this movie through word of mouth and only found it by hunting it down in my local DVD store.

    Think of it as six degrees of separation between you and an original idea, where each degree is an additional battle that you and the idea have to fight in order to find each other. Sometimes that battle is to get that idea accepted and produced, sometimes the battle is to find cinemas willing to take a chance on screening the production. It’s just made harder by the fact that by virtue of the fact that if the idea is original, you may not recognise it when you see it. New ideas are usually buried at the bottom of whatever pile they’re in, whether that be a pile of scripts on a desk or a list of movies in a Cineplex.

    Pick any two Adam Sandler movies at random and there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll see him give pretty much the same performance in both movies. Adam Sandler’s actually not a terrible actor, and he’s no idiot. He knows full well that people want Adam Sandler to play the same type of character over and over again in lowest common denominator movies and usually have the emotional resolution of the movie on some form of sports field. Adam Sandler can give a good original performance when called upon to, Punch Drunk Love and Funny People have shown us this much. But he knows that more people will pay to see him give them what they know and what they expect than if he tries for originality.

    Getting a remake or reboot or sequel or prequel to our cinema screens does legitimately take a lot of effort. It’s not an easy thing to do by any stretch of the imagination. Any movie of that type has to attract new viewers as well as keep the pre-existing fans happy, or at the very least, keep them interested. But the main goal seems to be to attract as many viewers as possible, even if it means watering down what was great about the original movies. John McClane was allowed to shoot a helicopter with a car in Die Hard 4.0, but he wasn’t allowed to use his catchphrase for fear that the younger members of the audience might be offended. If that practice was extended, Rocky wouldn’t be allowed run up the steps in the obligatory training montage for fear that it might offend people who can’t run.

    Relaunching a franchise usually having to make a movie-by-committee and that means making concessions.

    There’s no denying that I’m looking forward to the A-Team movie, based on the TV series of the same name, or to Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, based on… Wall Street. But more than anything, what I want is to walk into a cinema and be totally surprised by what’s presented to me, and surprised to see that the screening is packed to capacity by people who are willing to seek out and support an original idea.

    Remakes, reboots and adaptations have been around since the early days of cinema and they’re not going away any time soon. They’re an important part of the movie industry, and sometimes a necessary evil, Chris Nolan’s Batman reboot gave him the clout to bring Inception to our cinemas in the very near future. Original thought and original movies are out there, waiting to be noticed. They’re usually not as flashy as the recycled movies but they might just be better for the planet.

  • Toy Box: Cover Girls of the DCU – Zatanna

    Back at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con, one of my favorite new series from DC Direct was the set of statues called Cover Girls of the DCU. At the time, they were showing off Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Catwoman, Power Girl and Zatanna, and all looked exceptional in the approximately 9″ tall scale. I knew it was a series I’d be picking up.

    And then a strange thing happened. Some how I lost track of them all together, and it wasn’t until late in 2009 when Black Canary was released that I realized I was already two statues behind. Both Wonder Woman and Zatanna had already come and gone, and I had to catch up.

    Thankfully, both Wonder Woman and Zatanna were going to see a second shipment from DC Direct at the end of 2009 or early 2010. I received Wonder Woman a couple weeks ago (with Catwoman), and now Zatanna has hit my porch, making me feel all warm and fuzzy once again.

    These collectibles are the combined efforts of the talented artist Adam Hughes, who designs the statues, and Jack Mathews who brings them to life in all their three dimensional glory. Each is a ‘limited’ edition, although with numbers like 5000 (the edition size on Zatanna) I think they’re pushing the concept of limited a tad.

    Cover Girls of the DCU – Zatanna statue

    DC Direct is already in for several more statues, with some other strong rumors as well. Power Girl is up next and shipping very soon, and Harley right on her high heels. We’ve seen artwork for Poison Ivy, and both Batgirl and Supergirl are pretty much a given. After that, there’s still somewhere in the neighborhood of 352 more excellent choices for female DC characters, and while the line originally used actual covers for the designs, they’ve now said that Adam will be doing some of his own designs for the series as well, opening up the potential list even further. Bring on the ladies!

    Packagiing – ***
    These come in boxes, just big enough to keep the precious cargo safe and sound. Inside, the statue is packed in a solid styrofoam insert, and DC Direct has included a large Certificate of Authenticity. As I said, the run is 5000 on this particular statue, although I’m not quite sure how that worked with the two shipments. Did they always have a run size of 5000, and they just didn’t ship the second half right away? I suspect that’s the case, but I haven’t confirmed.

    Sculpt – ***1/2
    DCD has hit on a winning team with Hughes and Mathews. Jack has the talent to translate Adam’s designs properly, with perfect proportions, scale and style.

    While these statues are generally smooth surfaced, with little texture or fine detail, there is enough to give them some level of realism and take them just a notch about a straight comic book style interpretation.

    My only complaint with Zatanna is a complaint I’m likely to have with the entire series, since it’s clearly an aesthetic decision and not one of skill or quality – the hair lacks a lot of fine definition and detail. It’s less of an issue here on Zatanna than Wonder Woman, where the hair was done up in dynamic action pose, but it’s still annoying to me. I suspect I’ll end up favoring characters like Harley and Catwoman overall, where the hair is covered by a cowl, largely because of this issue.

    Paint – ****
    DC Direct has brought it when it comes to the paint quality on this series. I did have one statue – Black Canary – with some sloppy work on the eyes and lips, but that appears to be the exception, not the rule. The other three, Zatanna included, have had exceptional paint ops for this price range and this scale.

    Cut lines are generally sharp and clean, skin tones are smooth and consistent, and small details are well done. They’ve added some variety by employing different finishes, and the overall final effect is one of a high quality statue.

    Design – ****
    Each of these, whether it’s based on a comic cover or it is one of the future Hughes designs, is intended to be quite dynamic. They’re shooting for a lot of personality here, which is always a big risk. It can pay off huge when done well, but crash and burn if the execution is poor.

    So far the only design that’s questionable for me is Black Canary. For other folks, Wonder Woman was iffy. But I think Zatanna has universal appeal, with a very sexy, sleek dancer’s stance and coy expression. Like Catwoman, every aspect of the pose, from the tilt of the head to the angle of the hips, brings out her best qualities. There are times when Hughes’ ladies are a bit, uh, disproportionate, and yes, a bit sexist in their portrayal. But there’s simply no denying that they are always a) actual women, not little girls and b) hotter than asphalt in Texas on the Fourth of July.

    Value – ***
    Yep, even at around $80, I’m giving these ladies an above average value score. Considering that the much smaller (around 30% smaller) Batman Black and White statues are already pushing $70, and considering the level of production quality on most of the releases so far especially with regard to the paint ops, the price tag is more than reasonable.

    Things to Watch Out For – Nada. As long as you refrain from juggling her over a concrete floor, you should be fine.

    Overall – ****
    I still like the Catwoman the best of the four releases so far, but that might be due to my affinity towards Batman villains, especially those wearing uber tight all black costumes. Zatanna is certainly right up there with her though, and these two are unlikely to be unseated by Power Girl, at least for me. Harley on the other hand…

  • Toy Box: Batman Black and White – Ed McGuinness

    The Batman: Black and White series of statues remains one of DC Direct’s most popular series. It says something about the lasting power of the character as well as the overall beauty of grayscale, when done properly.

    The latest release in the series is based on the art work of Ed McGuinness. He’s been popular lately, with the Public Enemies cartoon drawing heavily from his unique style as well. His characters tend to be bulky with exaggerated musculature, and a shorter, stockier appearance. DC Direct had great success with several waves of action figures based on the style, and have now translated it into their popular line of statues.

    Batman: Black and White – Ed McGuinness

    While the art style is all McGuinness, the sculpting work was handled by James Shoop this time around. As always, it’s a ‘limited’ edition, although with 4000 statues produced, it’s treating the definition of limited like a fat woman treats lycra – stretching the Hell out of it.

    Packaging – ***
    It comes in a box, like most statues of this type. Bats himself is not permanently attached to the base, so there are two pieces inside the styrofoam insert. There’s no window to see the quality of the paint on the shelf, which is always a negative, but at least the box is easy to store for MIBers, keeps the contents very safe, and can be reused when necessary.

    And in case you were wondering, there’s no Certificate of Authenticity, although the edition size and number are both on the bottom of the box and on the base of the statue.

    Sculpting – ***
    If you’re a huge fan of McGuinness’ original Public Enemies style Batman, then you’re probably going to like this quite a bit. It stays true to that style, and my only issues are really with the style combined with this pose.

    There’s plenty of sharp detail in the sculpt, perhaps too much at least for me. From the waist up, I love the look – the extended claw-like hands in back, the short cape flowing between, and the cat-like landing pose all look terrific. My only real issue is that the very large, highly detailed, extremely muscled thighs are exaggerated even further in this particular pose. Maybe it was just that blind date back in college with the West German female Olympic weight lifter that went places I’d rather forget, but the large thighs throw off the overall look for me.

    The scale is creeping up on some of these statues too. Originally they were all very much in a six inch scale, but this statue (along with a couple of the other recent releases) is getting much closer to a 7″ scale. DC Direct has always had issues keeping scale clean within a series…Hell, within a single wave.

    Paint – ***1/2
    While there’s nothing exceptional about the paint ops here, the quaility is solid and in line with your expectations considering the price point. Cut lines are clean and neat, there’s a good use of high gloss finish on several of the black areas, and the large bat symbol is centered and even.

    Design – ***1/2
    As I mentioned in the sculpting section, I really do like the basic concept of the design, with Batman landing on the ball of one foot. The back stretched arms and talon-like fingers really add to the dynamic nature of the pose, and it’s unique enough in a sea of black and white Batman statues to add some pop to the display.

    I deducted more for the thunder thighs in the Sculpt section, but because I think the basic design concept is solid, I gave the higher marks here. Don’t get me wrong – I realize that the large thighs are very much a part of the McGuinness style. It’s just that in this particular pose, they are a bit too obvious and eye catching for my tastes. Your mileage may vary.

    Things to Watch Out For –
    Don’t forget that this guy isn’t attached to the base (like I did) and pick him up willy-nilly. You’ll be mighty sad if the base falls free (like mine *almost* did) and you end up with pieces on the floor.

    Value – **1/2
    The reality – and a bit of a sad one it is – is that statues in this 6 – 7″ scale are running $50 – $70 now. In fact, plastic statues of simlar style are running just as much, like the new Marvel Bishojo series by Kotobukiya. Here you’re getting the heavier poly resin, and extra weight always adds an impression of value, whether it’s right or wrong.

    Overall – ***
    This is another solid entry in the overall series, fitting in the middle of the pack. Fans of the McGuinness art style will enjoy it quite a bit, and my only real quibbles are how the thighs are front and center, and the slight increase in scale.

    Recalling the good old days of Paramount’s rapid, clockwork release of the Trek series on standard DVD, the remastered high-def edition of Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2 (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$129.99 SRP) has arrived and, if anything, puts the first season set to shame. As before, you get both the original 60’s version of each episode, plus the recent remastered featuring brand-new effects work. In addition, there’s a disc devoted to the Tribbles (with both the DS9 and Animated Trek episodes that contained the furry creatures, plus commentary), featurettes, and more.

    Ever since they first came on the market, I’ve been ridiculously entranced by digital picture frames. Just the space-age idea that you could have shifting photos within a traditional-looking picture frame makes the 7-year-old me go “Cool.” Sad? Maybe – but the 15″ Gigantor Digital Picture frame ($149.99) is still a great addition to any wall, and very easy to use.

    A few years back, Warner Bros. released a positively revelatory special edition of The Wizard Of Oz on DVD. The picture had never – ever, even in its theatrical release – looked and sounded better. Well, with the release in high-def of The Wizard Of Oz: Ultimate Collector’s Edition (Warner Bros., Rated G, Blu-Ray-$84.99 SRP), they’ve managed to top even that stellar release. It is absolutely stunning. If that weren’t enough, Warners continues to set the benchmark for truly special collector’s editions, porting over not only the original bonus features, but adding a new profile of director Victor Fleming, the John Ritter biopic The Dreamer Of Oz, the 2007Hollywood Walk Of Fame salute to the Munchkins, and the documentary MGM: When The Lion Roars. If that weren’t enough, there’s also a reproduction of the original 1939 campaign book, a 52-page commemorative book, a replica of the original movie budget, and a limited edition 70th anniversary watch. Pretty impressive, no?

    For all of the comedy and loopy fun that Dreamworks puts into the films CG-animated they release, they really can’t make a visually appealing flick to save their lives. Look no further than Monsters vs Aliens (Dreamworks, Rated PG, DVD-$34.98 SRP), which is exactly as its title describes, has plenty of laughs, but looks like it was designed by a low-rent rip-off studio for direct-to-video. Shame, really. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, and sneak peaks of future Dreamworks releases. Also available in the initial release is a bonus DVD with the new 3-D adventure B.O.B.’s Big Break. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    It’s nice that, every once in awhile, a comedy will come down the pike that remembers how enjoyable humor based on character can be – and such is the case with Away We Go (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP), starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph as a young couple who decide to trek cross-country prior to the birth of their first child in hopes of finding the perfect place to put down roots, encountering a bizarre clutch of family and friends along the way. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and a pair of featurettes.

    The playing field is littered with the bodies of many serials that attempted to make a go of it on the net, but one of the few actual success stories gets a DVD release with The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2 (New Video, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). The 2-disc set contains all 22 episodes starring Felicia Day as a woman who, after hitting rock bottom, immerses herself in online gaming that transitions into an awkward real world meeting between her fellow players. Bonus features include interviews, audition footage, commentaries, featurettes, and a gag reel.

    Ah, but that’s not the only History Channel program that benefits from a bump up to high-def – also add the complete 3rd season of The Universe (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$69.95 SRP), which combines history and astronomy into one breathtaking exploration of, well, the universe and all of its phenomena. The 3-disc set contains all 12 episodes.

    Color me stunned that we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of the original UK miniseries Traffik (Acorn, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP), whose intertwined story on the international drug trade was eventually adapted for the big screen by Steven Soderbergh. The new edition features an interview with writer Simon Moore.

    Making holiday viewing that much easier this year, Disney has put together a standalone release of the still-great Mickey’s Christmas Carol (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP) as the 7th volume of their Walt Disney Animation Collection line. The disc also sports The Small One, Pluto’s Christmas Tree, and Santa’s Workshop. Also being re-released in a 10th anniversary edition on DVD is Winnie The Pooh: Seasons Of Giving (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP), complete with a packed in Pooh stocking.

    Of all of the direct-to-video animated DC Universe titles to come down the pike, the one that’s gotten the most right – in tone, character, and execution – is Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$24.98 SRP), which adapts the graphic novel by Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness about Luthor’s rise to the presidency and the outlaw position it puts our dynamic duo in. The 2-disc special edition features featurettes, sneak peeks, and a pair of bonus cartoons presented by Bruce Timm. A Blu-Ray edition ($29.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus features.

    I love when companies finally remember that they’ve left us dangling with abandoned classic TV releases and restart the process, as Paramount has done in giving us the penultimate 4th season of Taxi (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). The season is just as much fun as I remember it being, as the full cast is firmly in place and everyone is having a ball.

    Hugh Jackman – I understand that the success of the first abysmal film gave you a Hollywood career, and the second and third abysmal films cemented the studio’s belief that you were the key to their success, but do you think you could get, oh, I don’t know, a second reader to tell you what a crap script your solo foray as Wolverine (Fox, Rated PG-13, DVD-$34.98 SRP) is? Could you? Please? Because it was a joke. A painful, painful joke. The 2-disc set contains audio commentaries, a conversation with Stan Lee & Len Wein on the origins of the character, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and deleted/alternate scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    With the rather blunt title of Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years (S’More Entertainment, Not Rated, DVD-$39.95 SRP), you can pretty much guess that this box set contains the quartet of telemovies that were made long after the show went off the air. In addition to the programs, bonus features include interviews on each disc.

    Compiled to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first show, The Secret Policeman Rocks! (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$14.99 SRP) pulls together over a dozen performances from the various Secret Policeman’s Balls benefiting Amnesty International, and featuring the likes of Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Kate Bush, Sting, and more.

    We finally – FINALLY – get a production with the Muppets playing themselves, and it turns out to be a dull, misguided affair that forgets that the Muppets are supposed to be funny and interesting. Sadly, A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$26.99 SRP) brings an unnecessary and awkward human element into it, that does nothing but bog things down with a treacle coating. So very sad. The DVD contains a featurette and deleted scenes.

    It’s a shame that TV executives felt it was necessary to re-do the UK’s brilliant version for the American Life On Mars (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP), particularly since the short-lived iteration failed to ever capture the magic of the original. Still, you can judge for yourself, as the 4-disc set contains the entire run. Bonus features include audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and a gag reel.

    I could have done without the re-enactments, but the disturbing history repackaged in the documentary Manson (History, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP) still holds all of the trainwreck fascination that have defined the infamous murders – and the mad mastermind behind them.

    The only thing remarkable about the seventh season of CSI: Miami (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$71.41 SRP) is that anyone would expect anything remarkable out of the by-the-numbers, auto-pilot procedural. It’s not going to reinvent the wheel, people – it’s like Hamburger Helper. Reliable. Predictable. Passable. Bonus features include a pair of audio commentaries and a quartet of featurettes.

  • Toy Box: Batman Black and White: Joker

    DC Direct has been extremely successful with their line of 6 – 7″ scaled statues based on Batman, done up in moody black and white paint schemes. The Batman Black and White series has given us Bats based on the artwork of artists old and new, classic and contemporary, and DCD knows they’ve got a good thing here. But how do you try to make it better? Why not move into Bat villains!

    His Rogue’s Gallery is large and famous, but I doubt they had much trouble deciding who would get the monochromatic treatment first. It’s his arch nemesis of course, The Joker. More will come, including the Penguin, but the clown prince makes perfect sense as the first non-Batman statue in the series.

    For the artist, they selected Jim Lee’s rendition from the Hush story line. Sculpted by James Shoop, the statue will run you around $60 or so at most online dealers. Your LCS experience could differ greatly, since the SRP is $75.

    Batman: Black and White – The Joker

    Packaging – **1/2
    Hey, it’s a box. Unfortunately, the box has no window, so you won’t be able to see your specific statue till you get it home. That means any issues with paint are a crap shoot. That’s not new for this series, as all the statues have been boxed this way, but it’s still disappointing for me.

    There’s no Certificate of Authenticity, but they did print the edition number and size on the bottom. The Joker is limited to 5500, which is not much of a limit.

    Sculpting – ***1/2
    This statue is based on the classic look from the Hush series, with the wild eyed and clearly insane Joker posed with his ‘bang’ gun. This is one of the more detailed sculpts we’ve gotten in the series, because the face and hair of the Joker allow for much sharper and extreme work than the rather staid Batman.

    Comparing this to the previous DCD action figure based on the same art, I’d say they’ve done a better job here capturing the comic representation. It’s a little extreme, but I think that’s something the overall Batman Black and White series needs.

    He stands just shy of 6 inches tall with the base, and fits in nicely with the rest of the series. There has already been a Jim Lee Batman, and this statue goes fairly well with him.

    Paint – ***
    While the sculpting is strong, the paint is a bit on the sloppy side. Fortunately, the eyes are done quite well, and I like the choices of blacks, whites and grays that they used to translate this character into this color (or lack thereof) format. They’ve also mixed the finishes again, with some high gloss black on the lapels, but a matte finish most everywhere else.

    But they did get a bit wild with the paints here, and you can see pretty obvious slop on the teeth (the big discolored round spot dead center on his lower teeth is really annoying), and the white of the face is dirtier and grayer than I’d like. I’d prefer a brighter, more consistent white on the face and hands, more like the package photo.

    Design/Quality – ***
    The first thing worth noting about the design is that the figure is permanently attached to the base, something that is usually not the case with this series. I suspect that this was done to avoid damaging the feet or the thin ‘bang’ flag.

    My only complaint about the design is one that could have also been put in the sculpting section, but since I’ve lumped ‘quality’ in here, I’m including it in this category.

    The positioning of the gun and flag makes it appear as though the barrel is bent, warped toward the front. In fact, it is slightly bent, but it’s really the design that exaggerates this bend.

    Value – **
    The price on these went up a year or so ago to an SRP of $75, which translates to $60 – $65 at most retailers. I’m not sure they’ve done any that really rate that kind of price, especially considering that Gentle Giant is still able to produce their mini-busts at around $45.

    Shop around, and you might be able to get this closer to $50 (or perhaps on ebay), and at that price you can add another half star.

    Things to Watch Out For –
    Nothing you wouldn’t expect. Obviously, he’s breakable – he’s a resin statue, duh – but there’s nothing particularly weak or fragile here.

    Overall – ***
    This is a decent first villain entry in the series, but it could have been even better with a bit more care on the paint. Had the paint ops been as solid as the sculpt, I would have been more inclined to ignore the high price and awarded this crazed clown another half star overall.

    If you have the Jim Lee Batman in this series, I highly recommend picking this one up, paint issues aside. They make a great set together, and pay a nice tribute to Lee’s ability.

  • Backlash: The Bat-Oscars

    Are the Oscars As We Know Them Doomed? We Can Only Hope….

    As the entire world seems to pause for a moment for the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, some of regular life goes on, even in Fantasy Land, better known as Hollywood, USA. The Motion Picture Academy announces their nominees for the Oscars this week and with nothing better to do than talk out their collective asses, a fair portion of the entertainment media are squawking about whether or not the awards can survive if they don’t crown a ‘popular’ film Best Picture (read: Batman: The Dark Knight).

    There’s some logic to the argument if you look at the awards in a purely television special / ratings extravaganza event. Last year’s Oscar telecast was one of the lowest rated in years and some attribute that to a lack of a popular choice among the moviegoing public, something for them to ‘root for’, as though this were a NASCAR race. I’m sure the network would love for there to be a choice like The Dark Knight among the Best Picture nominees on Thursday and they might get their wish. Fact is, Christopher Nolan made a pretty good film in a year when some of the most interesting films to come out of Hollywood were in genres traditionally ignored by the Academy. Filmmakers have finally figured out that viewers can take their heroes with some flaws, something comic readers have been able to handle since the 1960’s. The heroes of Iron Man and The Dark Knight appeal to the general public in a time when the world is viewed in ever-darkening shades of gray, making those films as relevant as any to hit screens in recent years. If Warners can manage to not completely fuck up Watchmen (which I still have my doubts about), it might even be in this conversation a year from now. But to actually state that not nominating a film like Dark Knight for Best Picture could signal the end of the Oscars as we know it is such a complete load of bullshit that you could smell the odor in Australia.

    It has also been something of a banner year for the much-maligned (usually with good reason) Animated Feature Film (or, as I like to call it, “The Oscar We Just Give to Pixar Every Year They Release a Film”). Pixar, as usual, made a good showing, this time with Wall-E and proved once again that the important part of any film, animated or otherwise, is a good script. For that reason, Wall-E is even being mentioned as a potential nominee in some of the non-traditional categories for animated films, such as Best Screenplay and even as a possible longshot for Best Picture. Disney, long absent from any conversation concerning a good animated feature that wasn’t co-produced with the aforementioned Pixar, managed to release Bolt, a film that looked a whole lot like it escaped from Pixar (in some respects, that’s just what it did). Even some of the releases geared straight for the kid market weren’t as mind numbing as they’ve been in the past. Just as a bit of full disclosure, I have actively voted against some Pixar films in the past when I’ve thought another film deserved the honor more, which is why the critic’s group I was a member of at the time gave the award to Wallace & Gromit over Cars. There will be a year when an animated feature is in the mix for Best Picture but this won’t be that year. The year it does happen, that film will have to defend itself against some pretty good animated films that came before it.

    First of all, the argument that the nomination & win of a “populist” film would be some sort of groundbreaking event is not only inaccurate, it’s ignorant. Titanic was a massively popular film, the highest grossing film of all time to date (Dark Knight currently sits at number two) and it took home the Best Picture award that year. So there’s the ‘blockbuster’ argument cut off at the knees. You can’t even make the ‘fantasy film’ argument any more since Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King made a pretty good showing that year, including taking that Best Picture statuette home to Hobbiton. Previously, high grossing science fiction or fantasy films would be thrown the bone of a nomination without a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. Films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and others really just took a spot away from films that might have had a slim chance of winning Best Picture. The way the Academy is structured now, any SF / fantasy film that is good enough to get a nomination in the Best Picture category has as good a chance to win as any other film that’s nominated.

    Which brings us back to The Dark Knight. I can’t remember a year when everyone from the film fans to us blowhards in the media haven’t carped on and on about how lousy the films were all year, only to be faced with a pretty tough decision when comes time to vote for the various awards. This year is no exception, with some really good films being considered as the nominations are being made. Gran Torino is possibly one of the best films Clint Eastwood has ever made. Slumdog Millionaire is this year’s “out of nowhere” film that is not only an art house choice but popular with general audiences that have seen the film. There are far more than five films that can be mentioned in this conversation but only five will be nominated. To say that Dark Knight should only be considered because of its popularity is the traditional slap in the face that these kinds of films almost always get from the ‘traditional’ press and members of the Academy who rely on the DVD screeners because their iron lungs won’t fit into the theaters. Thankfully, those contingents have been getting marginalized as time goes on, partially due to the internet but also because so many of the ‘old guard’ are either passing away or have figured out that a fantasy film no longer involves Buster Crabbe and might really be worth watching, even if the great-grandkids have a picture from the film on their lunch box or have downloaded it to their iPhone.

    The Dark Knight won’t be any kind of ‘hero’ to the Oscars regardless of whether it gets a Best Picture nomination or not and it shouldn’t be. The history of the Academy Awards is full of Best Picture winners that are little more than cheap rentals (if you can find them on video at all) while the runners up have gone on to become cherished classics of the medium. I have no doubt that, a decade from now, Dark Knight will be remembered and viewed a lot more than most of the films in the Oscar discussion this year. But the Oscars shouldn’t be about what film will be best remembered a decade from now but what the voters believe is the best film now. And that’s the way it should be, regardless of ratings or any other external influence. Of course, it won’t be that way, it probably hasn’t been for a whole lot of years and may never be that way again but we can all hope.

  • Toy Box: Batman – The Brave and the Bold Deluxe Aquaman/Blue Beetle

    Cartoon Network recently started a brand spankin’ new Batman cartoon on Friday nights, with a lot of your favorite old time characters. Batman – The Brave and the Bold has a Super Friends look, with some witty banter and interesting relationships between characters like Aquaman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Plastic Man and even Blue Beetle. The stories and writing style are very much directed at that 5 – 8 age range, but adults can enjoy the show as well.

    Mattel has also released action figures based on the show, and they seem to be hitting the New Year hard with plenty of different characters. I reviewed the regular single pack Batman, Aquaman, Kanjar Ro, and Black Manta over at mwctoys.com just last week, and over the weekend picked up the single pack Red Tornado as well. Today I’m checking out the deluxe Aquaman and deluxe Blue Beetle, which come with a larger, action feature based accessory.

    Batman The Brave and The Bold: Deluxe Aquaman and Blue Beetle

    You can expect to find these at mass market retailers, like Target, Meijers, or my least favorite, Wal-mart, where they’ll run you right around $8 for the singles, and around $11 for the deluxe sets. There are also a couple vehicles hitting right now, including the Batsub, and you should see quite a bit of the product as part of the new Target reset.

    Packaging – ***1/2
    I’m digging the packaging, largely due to two aspects. Yes, the design is attractive, and I like the retro feel to the graphics and colors, but those aren’t my main pluses. I really like the personalization on each cardback and bubble, with specific graphics and text for the character housed inside. Also, there’s no twisties or rubber bands anywhere to be found. They’ve used intelligently designed interior trays to hold the figures in place, making their removal a much easier process.

    Sculpting – Beetle ***; Aquaman **1/2
    The show has a very Super Friends feel to it, and Mattel has added to that some of the characteristics of their recent Super Friends line of figures, designed for that under 5 set. The larger, blocky feet and legs are obvious on most of the characters, but some (like Beetle) lack the huge honking feet.

    Most folks will either hate or tolerate the accessory holes on the figures. Nobody over 8 (and probably not many under) are going to love them, at least from an aesthetic point of view. These holes are on the back, shoulders, forearms and calves of most of the figures, but interestingly, Blue Beetle does not have them on his forearms, and he’s the better looking figure for it. I don’t mind the one on the back of course, and the one on the shoulders actually looks fine on Beetle. It also helps that he has some cool looking armor pieces as part of this deluxe set that can snap on his shoulders. Had they dropped the calf holes, I may have even gone another half star on this figure.

    Aquaman has that smart ass grin, and as voiced by John Di Maggio, he has that attitude on the show too. I love the chiseled head sculpt, but I’m less enamored with the standard body sculpt than in my first review. The longer I look at certain characters (like Aquaman and Batman) the less tolerant I am of some of the holes. The ones on Aquaman at the shoulders and elbows are way too obvious, while his calf holes are fine – completely different than Blue Beetle. I think it’s the rounded shoulders and skinny elbow joints that are doing it, whereas the more square shoulders (like on Beetle or Red Tornado) don’t look quite as bad with the holes.

    These figures stand about 5″ tall, making them slightly shorter than The Batman figures. They are also stockier, so they don’t really work together, but I included a group shot that has the Batman figure from the eariler line in back for comparison. It will be the last photo in the review.

    Paint – Beetle **1/2; Aquaman **
    These are mass market figures, and they have very mass market paint jobs. Poor Aquaman also suffers from a rather dopey looking color scheme.

    Blue Beetle looks good, although it’s a bit of a variation on his suit in the show. The suit tends to morph a whole lot though, so you can give them some leeway there. He has some overspray, weak cut lines, and the occasional rub mark, much like your average run of the mill big toy store figure. And by ‘big’, I mean the store, not the figure.

    Aquaman has a sub par paint job, even for a kid’s toy. There’s plenty of slop between the green and gold, and there’s even inconsistent coverage with both colors. Cut lines are weaker than Don Knotts after a weekend bender, and there’s a fair share of stray marks. Most of these issues are on the body though, with the paint job on the face and hair a bit more similar in quality to Beetle’s.

    I was very happy with the paint on the first four figures I picked up, so this is a huge step backward. What this really means is that the line is very inconsistent with the quality of the paint ops, so be careful picking them off the peg.

    Articulation – **
    The articulation is the most disappointing for me, but as a kid’s line, I can understand the decision behind some of the missing joints.

    These figures only have cut neck, cut shoulders, pin elbows, and cut waists. Oh, and don’t forget those old school T hips. I’m not surprised they dropped the knee joints, as these tend to break a lot when kids get their hands on them. But ball jointed shoulders would have been nice, particularly with figures like Aquaman and Batman who already have rounded shoulders. Yea, those dopey holes probably made it impossible, but it’s still disappointing. I’m also disappointed that there are no cut wrists or ball jointed necks, as these would add a lot to both the playability and poseability of the figures.

    Accessories/Action Features – ***
    Ah, those goofy peg holes on the bodies might look odd, but they do serve a purpose. Now it’s time to break out the accessories and add them to the mix.

    Beetle is the ‘bug zapper’ version. Generally he’s the only bug in the fight (unless we get to see a Blue Beetle/Killer Moth battle royale!) so having a ‘bug zapper’ doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I’m sure somebody was very proud of themselves when they came up with that name.

    His zapper is actually made up of several interchangable parts. There are small articulated bug wings, two blade like side attachments, and the main zapper body that fires a small projectile. The entire attachment can be put together as a single unit (and worn on his back), or you can pop off the blades and attach them to his shoulders, put the wings on his back, and even have him hold the zapper body in his hand. Because of the multiple holes, you can attach these things in a whole lot of different ways.

    Aquaman also has a fairly large contraption, called the “aqua pack”. It has a center backpack piece, as well as two fan blade like attachements, and two long sorta Trident looking front blades. When these blades are attached to the main backpack and the button on top is pushed, they spin menacingly.

    Like the Beetle’s weapon, these can all pop apart and be reattached to Aquaman on any of his peg holes. I’m not sure why he’d want the fan blades on his shoulders, but I gave that a try anyway. These can also be used on any other version of Aquaman or on any other figure in the series for that matter, making the build/accessorize feature pretty cool.

    Fun Factor – ***1/2
    Sure, these aren’t exactly a collector’s line, but kid’s should have a lot of fun with the build/accessorize feature of the accessories and holes. They are also very solid figures, so breakage should not be much of an issue. They’ve aimed these squarely at the 5 – 8 range, giving smaller kids DC figures before they are old enough to enjoy and appreciate something like the DC Universe line.

    Value – **
    Eleven bucks for a 5 inch action figure with an accessory – even one that can be used as armor – is not a great deal. The regular figures are eight bucks or less, and the action feature of this slightly more complex accessory is not worth another three bucks.

    Things to Watch Out For –
    Of course, always watch that mass market paint, but otherwise, you shouldn’t have any issues.

    Overall – Beetle ***; Aquaman **1/2
    This is quite clearly a line – and show – designed primarily for kids. But just like Playmobil or Lego, that doesn’t mean they can’t be pretty damn cool. So far, I’m liking this line more than I’m disliking it, and I suspect it’s going to grow on me over time. If Mattel can get a nice healthy line up of figures on the pegs, that’s going to go a long way as well. It’s only been out a couple weeks, and I already have six different characters, and I’m on the hunt for that Batsub. However, if the distribution ends up being as crappy as their DC Infinite Heroes line, it’s going to die an early death with me.

    What was so important that Batman had to be dragged away from Gotham?

    I love to do interviews like this. Forget about the talks with the leads, the men and women who have more invested in keeping you entertained with their zany stories from the set than they do the actual nuts and bolts of making the film. I don’t fault those who are able to talk to these individuals and are granted their five minutes but when you have to serve an audience that is interested in these celebrities the last thing that will come out of their mouths will be talking about the kinds of things that make people like Chin Han completely fascinating to me.

    Operating on the fringes of what was a cinematic, fiscal juggernaut this summer THE DARK KNIGHT didn’t just break box office records it redefined the notion of what it means to be successful. Just name the moment when this film jumped from jazzy summer actioneer to tent pole classic. What I can tell you, from my standpoint, looking back on it now, was when Batman was lured away from Gotham. Where and when else has any of our heroes left the safe confines of their own turf, to take the fight somewhere else. This moment defined Bruce Wayne’s own insanity. Forget about the parallel line between Heath Ledger’s Joker and Christan Bale’s Batman you have everything you need to know about how far Bruce Wayne is steeped into his own self-righteousness in those moments.

    Chin Han knows about Batman. When he and I spoke months ago it was just after the world premiere and still when everyone was in the dark about what was behind all the hype. People were still wondering whether it was worth it. It was. Every moment. It’s amusing now, looking back on the level of secrecy surrounding every plot point and the highlight of this interview has to be Han’s reaction to seeing Bale in all his rubberized goodness…

    CHRISTOPHER STIPP: I looked over your resume and, after talking to a few people, am I to believe that this is only your third feature length film?

    CHIN HAN: Yes, this is my one, two three ““ yes, this is my third feature length film.

    CS: How did you land this part?

    HAN: I landed it. Let me qualify that first question. It was my third feature film but I’ve worked in television before that and I was doing a lot of classical theatre as well ““ theatre basically. How did I land it? I think I did it old school basically. I auditioned for John Papsidera and I didn’t hear from them for a few weeks and then I heard from them and they wanted to see more of my work and I didn’t hear from them for another couple weeks and then other people wanted to see more of my work and then they called me back in again. So, all together it took about 6 weeks. It was kind of grueling.

    CS: I’m curious, just from the standpoint that you walked into this knowing that it was going to be a big movie. How is it being at the center of this swirl that this whole movie has taken on a life of it’s own and the media and marketing campaigns and what have you ““ what’s it like to be that fly on the wall?

    HAN: I’m still taking it in actually. We were at the premier two nights ago ““ I had to pinch myself to just make sure I was there on the red carpet with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Christian, Maggie and Morgan. But I’m still taking it in. Obviously, it’s very surreal and very humbling at the same time but I think I’ll get a better sense to what this means to me in a couple weeks.

    (Laughs)

    CS: And I’ve heard that Christopher Nolan’s IMAX material…I heard it’s amazing that the way he shot it is absolutely spectacular on IMAX.

    HAN: Yes. You’ll get vertigo watching it. It’s very stunning. And on top of that I think there are new vistas in this movie. I think some of the scenes were shot in Hong Kong as well so you get to see some very different sights and sounds basically in this film, which are stunning. He’s done a magnificent job on this film.

    CS: Did you shoot your scenes in Hong Kong or were you part of the Chicago shooting as well?

    HAN: I was part of the Chicago shooting as well. I shot in Chicago. I shot in London, for the most part of the movie.

    CS: The character you play, without giving anything away, how does Lau fit into the film?

    HAN: He’s an Asian business mogul who has now joined the ranks of these shadowy figures that have appeared in Gotham because of the demise of Carmine Falcone. I think that’s as much as I can tell you. I think you will have fun with this character because I did and he’s one of those characters that are quite hard to read.

    CS: Before any of this happened, did you go into this with an “I don’t care what my role is, I want into this”?

    HAN: Absolutely. I would do anything with Chris Nolan. I love his previous films. I love Memento, The Prestige, and I loved Insomnia as well and so I was very thrilled when they were interested in seeing me or reading me but when I got the type and they don’t give you the full script obviously on a movie this top secret, I was looking it over the sides and said there is something special here because there is just so much to his writing. It’s interesting to play those types of characters so that was the icing on the cake. But I would have done it, sight unseen.

    CS: How was that just getting part of the script? This whole idea of secrecy – I know there are a few directors out there, J.J. Abrams is notorious for secrecy, were you just given a few pages, were you like, “Come on, is this really necessary?”

    HAN: Even when I was looking at the sides for Lau you really had no idea how big the part is, because you have these few pages and obviously these few pages would let them know if you could carry the role but how do I feel about it? I think it makes the job of preparing for the audition challenging as well because you don’t know what to expect next. And when I got the full script I read it through and just delighted to have this kind of a role in a movie.

    CS: Now moving forward to where you’ve been as an actor, how was it working over in Singapore and thinking, “I want to make the jump to American films and American media”? What lead up to that moment where you said, “I’m going to give it a go”?

    HAN: I was doing television and I wanted to direct more so I wanted to take a break from acting and direct more and then this film came along, which is Blindness quite some time ago and I had fun on that but it wasn’t enough to warrant my taking a break from directing or producing. So I did a couple other projects and then I did 3 Needles with Thom Fitzgerald and that film was shot in 3 different countries that really whetted my passion for acting and that was a few years ago. So it just came at the perfect time. I was thinking of making the move to Los Angeles at that time so it came at the most perfect time really. It was not an overnight process. It took 8 years I think.

    CS: And if you have success in this it will be overnight success. Where I’ve looked at your 20 year career and you’ve been doing this for lots of years.

    HAN: Yes.

    CS: I’m also looking at the way some films overseas play. A lot of times when American films get released here they will do OK but in the international market it does very well. You’ve come from a market in Singapore where there is a different sensibility when it comes to movies and theater and what have you ““ is it a different sort of theatrical language if I can use that coming to working within American boundaries? Are there basic differences between Asian films and American films?

    HAN: I think that there are there are some differences ““ some differences in story telling techniques ““ the way Asians and Americans express themselves so that effects the way our scripts are written as well and how our actors communicate their emotions to the audience too. There are some differences ““ yes.

    CS: Where did you go for 7 years since your 1998 debut? There is a big hole for 7 years. What happened?

    (Laughs)

    HAN: That’s when I was producing and directing. I had produced the Asian premiere of The Blue Room which was the play that got a lot of attention on the West End of Broadway because Nicole Kidman did that play. But we did it with a Singapore cast and I was producing a lot of plays which subsequently moved me to musical theatre and I was one of the producers of the musical adaptation of Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet. And had wonderful success in Singapore and Taiwan as well. So, those years were spent being on the other side of production.

    CS: Why did you go back? It seems like you have a lot of success doing that.

    HAN: Why did I go back to acting?

    CS: Yes.

    HAN: I don’t know. After working with Thom Fitsgerald and shooting in Taiwn for the most part with Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, I just realized that my passion really was in acting because of the scope of films. Not just the skill of production, which is very exciting but it’s the reach of film. And as an actor, as a person who creates, you want whatever you create to reach an audience.

    CS: Now going back to your Dark Knight experience and being directed by Christopher Nolan. I won’t ask what it’s like to work with him because I think I know the answer to that, but I’m curious to know behind your eyes when he was directing things on the set, what did you take away from the way he manages the film set?

    HAN: I think Chris Nolan is the picture of grace under pressure. Watching him direct on set you would never know he was directing a $180 million movie. I never heard him raise his voice. He’s always very collected and he’s always really precise in his direction and instruction. So that’s one thing I learned that you can ““ you don’t have to be a jerk that you sometimes find in the theater ““ the directors who have very unique visions but at the same time behave in a way that might not be constructive for actors and production and the thing I took away from it is that you can be talented and have that vision and at the same time be the perfect gentleman. I think Chris Nolan was that.

    CS: That’s insightful. I think a lot of directors get a little taste of their own hype and you hear stories of some that like to yell and make actors go through 40-50 takes in order to do that.

    HAN: You probably know who those directors are as well.

    (Laughs)

    HAN: Yes, Chris definitely isn’t one of them.

    CS: Growing up, were you familiar with Batman? Is that the international appeal for a movie like this that it will do well in other markets because everyone knows who Batman is?

    HAN: Batman has a 70 year history if I’m not mistaken. I remember reading the comics when I was younger and I remember when the first Batman movie came out so I do remember the time ““ there are a lot of good comic book movies and some bad ones ““ that was also the time of Superman, Superman II, Batman and yes, I was very familiar with the movies and a big fan of the series. When I heard that the sequel to Batman Begins was going to be called The Dark Knight that secretly gave me goose bumps because that movie didn’t even have the name Batman in it and you will see why when you see the movie tonight and you will see why it’s called The Dark Knight, it resonates on so many levels that way.

    CS: And even on that level, the giddy schoolboy, did you have a chance to see Bale dressed up as Batman and was it neat on some level?

    HAN: Yes, it was. The first day on the set they flew me in from Los Angeles to Heathrow. I got off the plane, been traveling for 15 hours now and then I think one of the production assistants tells me Chris is ready to see me. I go to the set which is huge and the first thing in front of me, the first thing I see day one is Christian Bale in the Batman outfit. That was pretty amazing.

    CS: I know a lot of actors I know would say “It’s work”, “It’s a job” but that just has to be a thrill on some level.

    HAN: No. On every level.

    (Laughs)

    HAN: I’m not going to pretend to be too cool for school here”¦

    (Laughs)

    HAN: I really did get a big kick out of seeing that and working with Bale as well.

    CS: How was he? The guy is not out there a whole lot in public ““ kind of introspective ““ how was it being as an actor being on the set with him?

    HAN: Two aspects of the business ““ one is the job at hand and the job of the actor and the other aspect in this business is you are doing press conferences or doing interviews, like this, and I think with Bale, as reserved as he may be, I found working with him to be quite wonderful because I think he’s very generous as an actor ““ he gives us a lot to work with and I really enjoy working with him.

    CS: And now I see you have gone from one small film to another small film, with 2012..

    HAN: Yeah, a very small film…

    (Laughs)

    CS: Not a lot of people are going to be able to see it so good luck to you on that one ““ you are shooting in August for 2012? Does this mean a bigger part for you?

    HAN: It’s a very interesting movie and I think that I would describe it as an ensemble cast and I am more than happy with my part in it. It’s hard to ask an actor that question because it’s all objectivity with respect to the importance ““ my part, yes, it’s very, very important”¦.

    (Laughs)

    But I will reserve judgment on that and say I am happy to work with this group of actors. Moving from one excellent group of actors to another. Another pretty impressive budget. I mean, John Cusak, Woody Harrelson has been added to the cast ““ a lot of people whose work I love. So, I’m very excited about it.

    CS: I’m trying to get a handle on it ““ is it a bunch of eco-warriors to prevent disaster?

    HAN: It’s about the end of the world basically.

    CS: Oh, one of those…

    HAN: It’s about the end of the world as we know it. 2012 in the Mayan calendar represents the end of the world and basically this movie is about the apocalypse. So obviously I go from one quiet movie to another one.

    (Laughs)

    CS: Well sir, I don’t want to take up any more of your time but I have one more question for you. You’ve done a lot of theater, a lot of classical training which I respect, these movies aren’t going to win any independent spirit awards ““ when you look at what jobs come on the horizon are you all for throwing yourself at whatever comes your way or do you have a plan, a trajectory of where you want to be in five years?

    HAN: No, I don’t have a plan. Different kinds of movies satisfy different appetites in me. I think The Dark Knight is a very unique movie ““ much more than a comic book movie so in terms of that I think I approached The Dark Knight as I would a drama really ““ like I did 3 Needles. Now Blindness which I did was a small movie, is more film noir and I always enjoyed that type of film. In 2012, obviously, we know the movie is going to be balls-out excitement and action so that fulfills another perhaps boyhood fantasy of wanting to be in a movie like that. So they all satisfy me in different ways and I don’t have a plan so to speak, as an actor.

    Largely a neglected novelty in the US, Alan Parker’s wonderfully bizarre Bugsy Malone (ITV, Rated G, DVD-£19.99 SRP) is a certified kiddie holiday classic – think of it as the equivalent to what A Christmas Story is in the US. Yes – wonderfully bizarre – how else would you describe a gangster movie starring kids, with music by Paul Williams? It’s never been released on DVD in the States, but they’ve long had a standard-edition DVD in the UK, featuring an audio commentary from Parker, trailers, galleries, and more. Well, now they’ve gone and shown up the States again by releasing a beautifully high definition Blu-Ray edition (ITV, £19.99 SRP). If you’ve never seen the film – well, that’s the way to see it. You must see it.

    Back on the road again, actor Robbie Coltrane is exploring the interesting and unique to be found across the breadth of England in Robbie Coltrane: Incredible Britain (Acorn Media, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP). From 20-ton monster trucks to wing-walkers to rugby played with a beer keg, it’s a bizarre, fun travelogue.

    If the slice of the 60’s presented in AMC’s Mad Men leaves you wanting to sonically explore the period a little more, then by all means pick up Mad Men: Music From The Series Volume 1 (EMI, $17.98 SRP). With tracks from Vic Damone, Bobby Vinton, Ella Fitzgerald, The Andrews Sisters, series composer David Carbonara and more, it’s worth a spin.

    I always get a kick out of the sheer energy and exuberance – and, frankly, unhinged quality – of talk and variety shows in the UK. Case in point is The Friday Night Project, which is an hour long comedy program presented by Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins, and featuring a different guest host and musical guest each week. Think of it as a funny Saturday Night Live, deriving much of the humor from the unpredictability of Collins and Carr, and the permissibility of UK television. If you’d like a nice sampler of what I’m getting on about, check out The Friday Night Project: Unleashed (ITV, Not Rated, DVD-£19.99 SRP), which is essentially a bonus-filled best-of compilation.

    Anticipation of The Dark Knight is building to a fever pitch, so it makes sense that Warners would quickly shuffle out a Batman Begins: Limited Edition Giftset on Blu-Ray (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$49.99 SRP) to exploit the mood. In a nutshell, it’s got the same on-disc bonus features as the standard 2-disc DVD, plus a 2/12 minute sneak peek at Dark Knight, a collection of postcards, a look at the filming of the prologue sequence of DK, and a comic book adaptation of the same.

    And you know that, since you’re already in the rip current, you’re going to pick up the score to The Dark Knight (Warner Sunset, $18.98 SRP), by Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard. You know you’re going to get it. You just know it.

    Despite cultural affectations, the bottom line is that funny is funny. Such is the case with Al Murray: The Pub Landlord Live At The Palladium (ITV, Not Rated, DVD-£19.99 SRP). It’s always wonderful to watch a comedian craft stand-up that transcends a stage persona, while still firmly rooting it in said character. Al Murray’s nationalistic, xenophobic, lager-loving pub owner is a thing of cliched glory, ranking right up there with Bob & Doug McKenzie. Heartily recommended. The DVD also features a behind-the-scenes featurette.

    First of all, let me say that it’s no Meet The Spartans. And I mean that as a compliment, because that was just unwatchable excrement. No, Superhero Movie (Dimension, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP) is better than most of the horrid pop culture parody flicks to come down the pike since the high water mark of Airplane!. can you guess what the subject matter is this go round? Can you? I knew you could. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, featurettes, and the theatrical trailer.

    They still haven’t found a good vehicle for Raven Symone, but Disney’s College Road Trip (Walt Disney, Rated G, DVD-$29.99 SRP) is an amiable enough affair, as its essentially Planes, Trains, & Automobiles, but with a father (Martin Lawrence) taking a road trip to check out colleges with his soon-to-be-leaving daughter (Symone). The DVD features audio commentaries, deleted scenes, a video diary, a gag reel, and more.

    Finally, what has become an iconic bit of television finally hits DVD with the complete ninth season of Dallas (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). What iconic moment do I speak of? Well, let’s just say it’s the second most iconic shower scene below Psycho‘s. The 4-disc set features all 31 episodes, plus an in-depth featurette on the season’s elaborate dream sequence.

    It’s not a full season set, but at least it’s a solid batch of episodes in the first set collecting The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet. The Best Of Ricky and Dave (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$34.99 SRP) features 24 episodes spanning the show’s 14 season run, with Ricky becoming a teen idol in the process.

    Dr. Alec Holland’s hulking, green alter-ego returns to DVD with the second volume of Swamp Thing: The Series (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$34.99 SRP), which collects the first 26 episodes of the show’s massive 50-episode 3rd (and final) season.

    Everything – and I mean everything – comes to DVD eventually, even when it’s such an embarrassing disappointment as the short-lived Birds Of Prey (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). In fact, the best thing I can say about comic book series is that – in the flashback showing how the former Batgirl, now Oracle, was crippled by the Joker – they were smart enough to cast Mark Hamill as the voice of the Clown Prince of Crime. The 4-disc set features all 13 episodes, plus the unaired pilot and all 30 episodes of the animated web-series Gotham Girls.

  • Weekend Shopping Guide 7/11/08: Cinematic Titanic Floats On

In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the Quick Stop Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

    As a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 from “back in the day”, for years I’d hoped for the return to performing of MST creator Joel Hodgson and writer/performer Trace Beaulieu (Dr. Forrester & Crow T. Robot). Even though we’ll probably never see MST return for various intractable reasons, both Joel and Trace returned – along with fellow alums Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl, and Josh Weinstein – to form Cinematic Titanic. For all intents and purposes, it’s pretty much MST – only all 5 members are silhouetted onscreen at the same time, stationed on a tiered series of platforms on either side of the screen and commenting on the flick. Their first flick was the delightfully awful The Oozing Skull ($14.99), but they’ve just released their second flick – Doomsday Machine ($14.99). You can pick up both discs – and all forthcoming titles – via www.cinematictitanic.com. The magic is back, my friends. Snap it up, post haste.

    William Conrad – now THERE was an outsize TV star that filled the screen in ways today’s stars only wish they could. And I don’t mean that in just the obvious reference to Conrad’s fabled girth – no, he was an old school TV actor who commanded your attention, much like William Shatner still does on Boston Legal. If you don’t believe me, check out the first volumes from the respective first seasons of both Cannon (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$36.98 SRP) and Jake And The Fatman (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP). Cannon features 11 episodes of Conrad as LA PI Frank Cannon, while Jake And The Fatman sports 11 episodes of Conrad as one half of the titular team of LA District Attorney J.L. McCabe (Conrad) and his on-tap PI Jake Styles (Joe Penny). Both sets feature the original episode promos, but nothing more. Where’s the tribute featurettes?

    As anyone who’s seen Wall-E knows, sitting in front of a computer all day (working, in my case) doesn’t exactly lend itself to muscle toning (or avoiding the dread carpal tunnel nightmare). Maybe that’s why everyone who sends their days bathed in the LCD glow should pick up a Powerball ($59.99). This remarkable little exercise ball – which contains a gyroscope at its core – is such an amazing piece of kit. It derives its amazing kinetic energy – up to 15,000 rpm – just from manual manipulation. Get one of these.

    Ah, Peep Show. If you’re a fan of The Office – or just offbeat British comedy in general (you know, the smart people) – you’ll probably dig Peep Show (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-£44.99 SRP). Gosh, how do I describe such a unique premise… In the show, you see the lives of roommates Jeremy & Mark through their eyes – and inner monologues. Jeremy is a wannabe pop star, Mark is an obsessive loser, and their thoughts and actions are truly hilarious. Think of it as a small-screen take on Being John Malkovich, without all the arty pretension. The 5-disc Region 2 set features all 5 current seasons, with bonus features including audio commentaries, featurettes, bonus scenes, and more. Check it out. Now. NOW!

    If you’ve ever had the desire to live a Wodehousian existence and be as coddled and pampered as Bertie Wooster – or you just feel like being awakened in the morning by the mellifluous tones of Stephen Fry – then you’ll want to make sure to get your own Voco Alarm Clock (£39.95 each), which features 150 different wake up messages recorded by Mr. Fry in his finest Jeevesian delivery. The clock is available in both a “Good Morning, Sir” and “Good Morning, Madam” version, and is an incredibly fantastic idea for an alarm clock.

    And speaking of the Caped Crusader, I can see what they were going for with Batman: Gotham Knight (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP). Essentially, it was the Batman equivalent of the animated explorations done for The Animatrix, employing non-traditional artist’s takes on the Caped Crusader. Unfortunately, much like the Matrix vehicle, we get an uneven affair of fascinating interludes and forgettable ones. Still, it’s worth a spin, and the 2-disc set contains audio commentary, a documentary on Batman creator Bob Kane, a featurette, and 4 bonus episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. Will they bring that back already?

    Did you know that there was a new Mummy movie coming out? No? Well, even I barely knew there was a new Mummy movie coming out. In order to mark the occasion, Universal has cooked up a batch of new special editions related to the franchise, starting out with 2-disc special editions of both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (Universal, Rated PG-13, DVD-$19.98 SRP each), both containing a clutch of newly-produced featurettes. Also in the dock is a new 2-disc edition of the original Mummy (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), starring the great Boris Karloff. The new Mummy film features Jet Li, so why don’t we throw in a new special edition of Fearless (Universal, Rated PG-13, DVD-$19.98 SRP) featuring 3 versions of the film, as well? And even though nobody asked for it, even director Stephen Sommers’s massive disappointment Van Helsing (Universal, Rated PG-13, DVD-$19.98 SRP) gets a collector’s edition of its own.

    In the legend that is the emerging grunge scene in the early-90’s, you may not know the name of a band called The Gits. The reason for that omission is the brutal tale of the rape and murder of the band’s lead singer and emotional core, Mia Zapata, after the group returned from a successful European tour. Over a decade later, new evidence would reopen the case, leading to the arrest of a suspect and a tale captured in the documentary The Gits (Liberation Entertainment, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP). Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, trailers, and a featurette on the non-profit organization that was formed in the aftermath of the tragedy.

    Eager to make sure that their second theatrical outing isn’t met by the same slack-jawed confusion of their inaugural go, the folks behind the X-Files (Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz) have selected 8 essential episodes in the 2-disc X-Files: Revelations (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$22.97 SRP). The set also features episode introductions, a WonderCon panel, and the theatrical trailer for the upcoming flick.

    Ireland’s soul singer supreme gets a quintet of special edition catalogue remasters. Now you can snag your own copies of Van Morrison’s Veedon Fleece, No Guru, No Method, No Teacher, Live At The Grand Opera House Belfast, The Healing Game (Universal/Polydor, $13.98 SRP each), and A Night In San Francisco (Universal/Polydor, $19.98 SRP), with each disc containing a clutch of bonus tracks.

    Another in the long line of Iraq war related films that failed to perform at the box office, Stop-Loss (Paramount, Rated R, DVD-$34.99 SRP) is, at the very least, worth a second chance on DVD, as it’s actually a decently crafted portrait of what today’s generation of military men are facing as their home lives crumble in the face of open-ended overseas commitments. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a pair of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Ignoring the double negative, Jimmy had it right when he said they don’t dance like Carmen no more – and you can see for yourself with The Carmen Miranda Collection (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP). The set feature a quintet of remastered catalogue titles starring the lady with the fruit hat – The Gang’s All Here, Something For The Boys, If I’m Lucky, Greenwich Village, and Doll Face. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, galleries, and more.

    If you want to feel the colossal loss of Joe Strummer all over again, by all means check out Julien Temple’s magnificent documentary The Future Is Unwritten (Sony Legacy, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), providing an affectionate but unvarnished portrait of the Clash frontman. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, 100 minutes of exclusive interview footage, and the theatrical trailer.

    Despite all of those peanuts, it’s nuts to Jericho (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) as its hard won second season of post-apocalyptic politics proves to be its last. The 2-disc set features all 7 episodes, plus deleted scenes, audio commentaries, featurettes, and the unaired alternate ending that was filmed in case the show got a third season pick-up. Which it didn’t. So here it is.

    Where are you going to take the relationship between Jeannie and her “master”, Tony, in the fifth and final season of I Dream Of Jeannie (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$39.95 SRP)? To the altar, of course! That’s right – they walk down the aisle, and are thrown into a guest-star studded series of magical escapades. The 4-disc set features all 26 episodes, but not a single audio commentary from Larry Hagman.

    Six seasons in, Monk (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) just keeps obsessively compulsively plugging along, an amiable little character treat. The 4-disc box set features all 16 episodes, plus audio commentaries.

    Even with the arrival of Amanda Tapping’s Colonel Samantha Carter, Stargate: Atlantis (MGM, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), I still can’t get behind the spin-off series of the almost always enjoyable Stargate SG-1. Either way, the 5-disc set features all 20 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, galleries, and bloopers.

    A pair of DC animated series come to an end with the release of their respective fifth seasons – The Batman and Teen Titans (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP each). Both sets feature 13 episodes across 2 discs, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Mix The Fast and The Furious with Miami Vice, and you pretty much get the short-lived Fastlane (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP), co-created by fauxteur McG. The 6-disc complete series et features all 22 episodes, plus an extended scene from the pilot, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and outtakes & and bloopers.

    I admit – by the team Sabrina The Teenage Witch reached its fourth season (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), I really didn’t care. Sure, I watched the first season, but that was because it featured Paul Feig, had Frank Conniff as a writer, and had practical magic effects by Joel Hodgson. By season 4, all we had was Nick Bakay’s sarcastic feline, Salem. The 4-disc set features all 22 episodes, but zero bonus materials.
