My Favourite Things: September 2012

my-favourite-things

SEPTEMBER

lucyline.gif

Phew! September has been a wild one. I’ve been running around like a headless chicken for the majority of this month. But, I’ve been lucky enough to perform on stage in front of hundreds of geeks at Dragon*Con and will soon be in a play in Dublin so it’s all a good sort of stress.

Don’t worry, I know you didn’t come here to hear about my life, you want internet fun things! My list for this month starts…… NOW!

1) Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)

For fans of Flight Of The Conchords the New Zealand Red Nose Day this year was an extra special event as it saw the semi-return of the band. They have been very quiet lately, with them both doing seperate projects, but they decided to help the charity event by contributing a song. The lyrics of which, were crowdsourced from some very cute kids.

You can see the song, plus the damn funny creation of it, by watching the video below.

I particularly love the awkward moment when the new Muppets movie comes up in conversation.

2) Whose Line Online

One of my favourite comedy things ever is the improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The show was in the UK for a number of years before Drew Carey took up the show in the States and I lapped it up like milk. Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Ryan Stiles, and Tony Slattery were comedy uncles to me.

wliia

I was recently pointed towards the rather wonderful whoselineonline.org which has archived all the shows from both sides of the Atlantic. But, surprisingly for me, it also contains the pre-TV show radio shows. That’s right, like all good comedy shows, it started on BBC radio first. Starring such wonderful people as Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French, Griff Rhys Jones, and tons more.

So check it out by CLICKING HERE.

3) Zombocalypse

This game is as addictive as the title is ridiculous. It’s a simple premise, shoot zombies in the head and keep shooting zombies in the head until you die. You start off with a machete and can pick up weapons as you go.

zombies

There are power ups and special weapons like helicopter attacks that you can utilise. I find the dual pistols particularly satisfying.

It’s a great time killer so if you want to kill some, along with zombies, CLICK THIS LINK.

4) Dragon*Con

Look, there is no way to fully express my feelings for Dragon*Con. This year was my 5th outing and as always it was an amazing time. The 4 days of the Con often feels like 4 weeks but as soon as it’s over I miss it.

One of the best thing about Dragon*Con, and one of the things I think it does better than any other Con, is all the awesome cosplayers. How could I give you even a glimpse into some of the 52 thousand maniacs who attend? Well, why not put them all into a Gangnam Style parody video.

That’s what Minh Nhat Bui did and what a great job they did of it too. So check out the video below. It’s the closest thing to being there I could find.

And because it deserves to be done:

gandalf-approves

5) Ben Folds Fraggles Five

In further evidence that Chris Hardwick is somehow living the life I was meant to be living, his Nerdist channel has taken the hands of fate to unite Ben Folds Five and Fraggle Rock in one music video.

If I’m honest, it’s not the best BFF song I’ve ever heard (I say this, yet two days later and I’m still singing the song to myself) but I’m glad to see the band back together and it’s just damn fun to see the Fraggles running around causing mayhem as is their wont.

——————————————————————

And that’s it! My favourite things of the last month.

Aaron Poole is the creator of #FringeFriday. He is also more accurately an internet whore and rarely leaves the house. If you like what you read here check out his blog http://aaronfever.blogspot.com

Weekend Shopping Guide 9/28/12: Dark Branagh Returns

weekendshopping.png

The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the FRED Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

(Please support FRED by using the links below to make any impulse purchases – it helps to keep us going…)

As sketch comedy series go – and it’s not an easy form to be consistently good in – there’s more gold than dross to be sound in the first season of Key & Peele (Comedy Central, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$22.98 SRP). The set sports audio commentaries, outtakes, an interview, and more.

thinkgeek-01.jpg

Ever had the urge to play old school vinyl records in the middle of nowhere, without having to worry about lugging a bulky turntable with you? Well, the Crosley Portable USB Turntable ($14.95) is the answer. Essentially, it’s boiled down the turntable to just the arm and holding the album in place, with battery power and an FM transmitter to really free you up.

thinkgeek-02.jpg

Kenneth Branagh returns as the Nordic detective who tackles the toughest of cases in Wallander 3 (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP), which features a trio of new feature-length mysteries. It remains a beautifully shot series and more Branagh is always welcome.

blankguide.gif

I don’t think Frank Miller’s heralded tale has aged terribly well, but the first part of the animated adaptation Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$24.98 SRP) is an enjoyable take on the material, and is mostly successful in updating the more dated elements of the very 1980’s tale of an aged and battered Bruce Wayne’s last hurrah. Bonus materials include featurettes, a digital comic, and bonus cartoons.

blankguide.gif

It’s an amiable series and it’s a shame that rights issues make it unlikely we’ll ever see full-series releases, but there is still plenty of fun to be had in Russell Howard’s Good News: The Best Of Series 2 (Channel 4, Not Rated, Region 2 DVD-£12.99 SRP). Bonus materials include unseen bits & pieces, and an unseen mystery guest.

blankguide.gif

Not only does Family Guy: Volume 10 (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) contain another 14 episodes, but many are uncensored, as well. Bonus materials include audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, animatics, and more.

blankguide.gif

Composer Nathan Johnson has certainly crafted the perfect sound for a hard-boiled mind trip like Looper (La-La Land Records, $19.98 SRP), and it’s one of those lovely scores that hold up well as a listening experience outside the theater.

blankguide.gif

Guest-star-studded and still bizarre, the second season of Portlandia (VSC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$24.95 SRP) has arrived with 10 episodes of Fred Armisen & Carrie Brownstein’s skewed view of Portland. Bonus materials include audio commentary, featurettes, a deleted scene, and an excerpt from their new book.

blankguide.gif

You know it’s time for a series to come to an end when the storylines have finally arrived at the point where your main characters have crossed over to murder, and so it is that after 8 seasons, Desperate Housewives (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$45.99 SRP) ends with the fallout over the housewives’ involvement in the offing of Gaby’s stepfather. Bonus materials include an audio commentary on the finale, deleted scenes, a featurette, and a gag reel.

blankguide.gif

It’s unfortunate that the show incorporates elements of the awful feature film, because there’s a lot to like about GI Joe Renegades (Shout Factory, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.97 SRP), which find a Joe team on the run after a spy mission against Cobra goes awry. Bonus materials include audio commentaries and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

blankguide.gif

Every so often, the Brits will export an affable, low-key dramedy filled with top-flight actors that can’t help but win you over. The latest booster shot is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) that finds a group of seniors deciding to make their limited retirement funds stretch by relocating to an Indian resort. Bonus materials include interviews and featurettes.

blankguide.gif

If spending your weekend investigating dead bodies for clues is your cuppa, then pull up a chair and dig into the 12th season of the original CSI (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$63.98 SRP), the 8th season of CSI: New York (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$55.98 SRP), and the final season of CSI: Miami (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$55.98 SRP). All 3 are packed with commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, gag reels, and more.

blankguide.gif

While you’re marking time until the next live action feature, the CG Resident Evil: Damnation (Sony, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$30.99 SRP) fills the gap with a European tale of Bio Organic Weapons being used in war and a bit of a cover up. Bonus materials include featurettes and a gag reel.

blankguide.gif

So there you have it… my humble suggestions for what to watch, listen to, play with, or waste money on this coming weekend. See ya next week…

Adult Swim’s Dana Snyder and FRED’s Ken Plume set out to have a literate conversation between two pals, but inevitably devolve into a verbal, and funny, free-for-all full of bickering, infighting, and the special kind of male bonding that comes from conflict expressed through the podcast medium.

Actor/comedian/raconteur Dana Snyder, you’re certainly aware, is Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s Master Shake, Squidbillies‘ Granny, Minoriteam’s Dr. Wang, and The Venture Bros.‘ Alchemist. Available for weddings and bar mitzvahs (bat availability pending), you can keep tabs on him via his website, www.eyeofthesnyder.com.

Ken Plume is the editor-in-chief here at FRED. He is a friend of Dana’s, as well as his arch-nemesis.

Weekend Shopping Guide 9/21/12: Adventure Comes Again

weekendshopping.png

The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the FRED Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

(Please support FRED by using the links below to make any impulse purchases – it helps to keep us going…)

We’ve been repeating the same waiting game we played when DVD first debuted – the game of waiting for beloved films to finally hit the format – with Blu-Ray. We’ve gotten Star Wars (sort of), Jaws, Superman Blade Runner – just about all of the geek pantheon, really – but one of the most glaring omissions now gets its time to shine, and boy does it ever. To say that the restoration and mastering work done for Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures (Paramount, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$99.98 SRP) presents high definition presentations of the 3 classic adventures (and that awful 4th adventure we won’t speak of again) that are the best ever seen, and are a textbook example of how to lovingly bring classic films to the format. In addition to all of the bonus materials from the previous DVD editions, the set also includes brand-new behind-the-scenes footage from the production of Raiders, which is absolutely must-see for fans. Are you going to get this set? Why am I even asking? Of course you are. So go on.

thinkgeek-01.jpg

Want a blindingly bright 600 lumen flashlight that’s tough and waterproof and will run for hours? The Klarus XT11 ($99.99) is that flashlight, running of a rechargeable li-on battery with 3 lighting modes and 1 flashlight, with tactical switch activation.

thinkgeek-02.jpg

I’m all for Shout Factory’s recent forays into archive collections of an artist’s disparate work, starting with their must-have Ernie Kovacs set, and now Steve Martin: The Television Stuff (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$34.93 SRP), which collects and presents (for the first time since they aired) Steve Martin’s two stand-up specials, his 4 NBC specials, and a bonus disc of bits and pieces, from awards show speeches and tributes to Carson & Letterman appearances and SNL sketches. You even get his very first TV appearance in 1966 on a local children’s show. So, yes. Get.

blankguide.gif

It’s been over a decade since Rhino released a handful of episodes, but all these years later hell has frozen over and you can now get your very own complete series set of Chris Elliott’s short-lived cult classic Get A Life (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$59.97 SRP). That’s all 35 episodes, uncut, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, the 2000 Paletyfest panel, and more. Get it before we all realize it’s a fever dream.

blankguide.gif

Yeah, I’m starting to sour on Modern Family (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$59.99 SRP). And I don’t want to, but the third season started to give me those same anything for a laugh character neglect that felled brilliant starters like Malcolm In The Middle. I really hop I’m wrong, because the ensemble remains strong, and Ed O’Neill should be allowed to work forever. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

blankguide.gif

There’s a delightfully old school fun about the horror of The Cabin In The Woods (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP), which Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have crafted about as well as a horror film can be crafted, with a nice mix of scares and humor draped over enough of a plot to pull the viewer through. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, and more.

Forget the chair crazy man of recent memory and go back to a time when Clint Eastwood was merely ranch foreman Rowdy Yates in the back-to-back release of Rawhide: Season 5 Volume 1 & Rawhide: Season 5 Volume 2 (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$45.98 SRP each). Bonus features are limited to episodic previews for select episodes.

It certainly doesn’t have the laid back charm of the original, but the new Hawaii Five-O (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$72.99 SRP) is pleasant enough as an Aloha State procedural. The second season set contains all 23 episodes plus commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

As Halloween fast approaches, Warners digs into its catalogue for a pair of mostly seasonal-appropriate titles to give their high definition debut – Devil’s Advocate and Queen Of The Damned (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.98 SRP each). Devil’s Advocate gets an audio commentary and deleted scenes, while Queen Of The Damned gets an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, music videos, a gag reel, and more.

This week’s TV releases also include the complete second season of Dana Delaney’s Body Of Proof (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) and the first half of the 6th season of Army Wives (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). Bonus features on Proof include featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, and webisodes, while Wives sports deleted scenes and bloopers.

The shame about the NBC release of their 2-disc London 2012 (NBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.93 SRP) is that the London Olympics is one I truly want an HD document of, but the last thing I want documented about it is NBC’s awful, tone-deaf coverage. Shame, really. Best to sit back and watch the pretty pictures on this and wait for the BBC’s superior release somewhere down the road.

Fans I’m sure will devour the pink frosting puff pastry documentary Katy Perry The Movie: Part Of Me (Paramount, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which presents an endearingly upbeat bubblegum portrait of the singer/personality. Bonus materials include featurettes and full concert performances.

blankguide.gif

How about a clutch of new releases from the fine folks at The History Channel? History gets covered with Secret Access: The Presidency (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP) and America’s Book Of Secrets (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP). Fake history is covered with an exploration of James Bond Gadgets (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). Reality with only tenuous historical information is covered by Cajun Pawn Stars (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). And batshit crazy junk history is covered by the high definition release of The Best Of Ancient Aliens (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$19.95 SRP).

So there you have it… my humble suggestions for what to watch, listen to, play with, or waste money on this coming weekend. See ya next week…

TOMASZ THOMSON – INTERVIEW

All you need to know is that you must see this film.

If you need a little more context, though, here is the long and short of it: A hitman makes a mistake. An honest one, anyone could’ve made it. He’s shuttled to the Carpathian Mountains to a lush, snowy, remote, desolate, locale where his only job is to keep his boss’ wife in good company. As these things usually go, the good boss’ wife meets and accidental demise and wackiness ensues from there. I say wacky but this movie is four on the floor fun. It’s been the best reason to check out something described as a German black comedy. Those three words are diametric opposites and don’t belong with one another but going into a movie expecting nothing but a good time is the right way to ensure this movie hits you just the right way.

I was able to interview the movie’s director, Tomasz Thomson, about making a movie that is visually dark and cold yet is able to make this a pretty gripping tale as everything comes undone. It’s Tarantino meets IN BRUGES’ Martin McDonagh. One of a kind.

The movie is now playing…

600full-snowmans-land-posterCHRISTOPHER STIPP: Your filmography shows your last work coming in 2001. What brought you back 10 years later to do this project and how were you keeping your skills sharp in this time?

TOMAZ THOMSON: Yes, a very long time. I was surprised myself how long it took to shoot the second feature, as my first film was quite successful on film festivals and the critics liked it. But making films can take ages sometimes. It is not uncommon to write a script with all the drafts for two or three years, then you spend another one or two years talking with your producer to TV stations, funds, actors and distributors. And then, just when you think, yes, this is going to happen, the project suddenly dies. This happened twice in a row to me, what was kind of frustrating but is a part of the job. You have to accept it and go on. And yes, you are right, one has to keep the skills sharp. You have to practice. You are not a director if you”˜re not directing. I was lucky to direct commercials and other small projects in the meantime what was not only good fun but paid my rent and made it possible to write the next script.

THOMSON: The main idea was to keep the mood switching. You let the viewer laugh about a joke and in the next second you surprise him or her with a serious, maybe even violent scene. This mix creates a dynamic that I love. It keeps things vivid. And you can balance it in the editing room quite well. Nevertheless the main tonality is rather melancholic.

CS: Where did the inspiration come from to write a movie that feels so original in the way it tells its story?

THOMSON: You need to have partners who back you up and give you the freedom to be creative. I was very lucky to do this film with Boris Michalski, a great producer. We had a very open and confident relationship and I always felt, that he believed in this project as much as I did and fought for it and our common vision. It wouldn”˜t have be possible if he had doubts. Probably he had some, but at least he never told me. So it was easy for me to feel free and brood over absurd scenes.

CS: Were you constrained in telling the story by your budget or were you able to tell the story you wanted, the way you wanted to?

THOMSON: From the very beginning it was clear that we would have a difficult budget situation. So the question was, are we going to do it anyway? And the answer was: Yes! Sure! Working low budget means, you have to adapt your story to the circumstances much more than you expect. You can”˜t postpone a shooting day just because of bad weather. You need snow but there is no? So you better change the scene so that it fits again. Or you need that car for the scene which is stuck in the snow a few miles away and won”˜t be here within the next hours? You need to be very flexible and you have to have fun in improvisation. I do and honestly, some of my favorite scenes were created on location.

CS: What did you find after shooting the movie and getting into the editing room? Did the story stay consistent or did you see something fresh you had not considered before?

THOMSON: It is crucial to kind of reset yourself and your vision in the editing room. Try to edit what you initially wanted but in the end you”˜ll have to forget the script and forget what you planed, to get the best out of it. Editing is a very creative process where you need to have a fresh view on the material you have shot. It is not easy, but it”˜s worth it. It was especially hard for me as I edited it myself. I changed a lot in the storyline, not only due to the improvisation and adaptation we made during the shooting but also because of the overall drama. For example, the narrated illustrated scenes were added afterwards.

0CS: The biggest challenge on this set feels like it was the elements. Did the snow or cold present any interesting obstacles?

THOMSON: Yes, the snow and the cold gave us a hard time. But on the other hand it had it”˜s advantages. The actors for instance didn”˜t have to pretend to be exhausted or to be freezing. Just because they were.

CS: After having seen the finished film, is there anything you’re most proud of in the movie that you feel you were able to capture perfectly (or near perfect)?

THOMSON: I like this movie. Added up I”˜ve probably seen it for a few hundred times now and I still like it. Don”˜t get me wrong, usually I”˜m very strict with my own work, so there are always a lot of things I would change. But the movie is finished, that”˜s the way it goes. So why do I still like to see it? I guess because of the characters. The actors did a fantastic job and really brought this weird characters to life. I have fun watching them every time.

CS: What was any big lesson you took away about filmmaking as you made this movie?

THOMSON: You never stop learning, that”˜s right and during this project I had two big lessons: the first was rather a technical one. The script was actually a bit too long when we started shooting. We all knew but thought, well, that”˜s good, then we have more material in the editing room. But in a low budget movie you have to concentrate on what is absolutely necessary because you don”˜t have the time and money to do extra scenes as a kind of a backup. You have to be very effective. Lesson two sounds like a worn out advice: never lose your vision. Stay open to other opinions, allow others to be part of the project but in the end it”˜s your film, you have to know what you”˜re doing and you have to decide. My producer and I did, and it was a very long and difficult way but in the end it paid off.
