  • Toy Box: Wall-E Maquette

    Pixar simply can do no wrong, at least not yet. Even when one of their films is less than Academy Award material (Cars), it still ends up producing one of the best selling toy lines for Mattel.

    Most animated movies don’t produce successful toy lines though, especially not action figures. For action figures to be truly fun, there needs to be confilct, and the type of conflict normally seen in animated movies is situational, less evil bad guy.

    This can make it tough for adult fans of such movies who are looking for collectibles or 3 dimensional representations of their favorite characters. Gentle Giant is now working with Pixar to produce a series of maquettes based on their films, and the first to be released – Wall-E – has hit the porch. These maquettes are the usual poly-resin type material, and run around $100 – $125, depending on where you pick them up. The production run numbers are pretty small considering, and they only produced 1000 of Wall-E. As a companion piece, you can also pick up Eve, and they are producing both Remy and Linguini from Ratatouille. No word yet on others in the series.

    Wall-E Maquette by Gentle Giant

    Gentle Giant has been hit or miss the last couple years, and they’ve never been able to capture the magic that their Star Wars series of mini-busts had. Even that line has lost almost all it’s lustre, and you can still pick up their concept McQuarrie Boba Fett bust, an exclusive to the San Diego Comic Con, at their web store. But so far, things are looking good for these Pixar maquettes, and it’s a license that could pay dividends for quite some time.

    Packaging – ***
    Wall-E comes in a box, without any window to allow you to see the actual maquette. A window wouldn’t do you much good anyway, since he comes in two pieces – his head and his body – which you attach. The head attaches to the body by way of a metal post.

    There’s also the usual cool baseball card style Certificate of Authenticity, a collectible these days in it’s own right.

    Sculpting – ***1/2
    Although this is an animated character, he doesn’t have the usual level of simplistic detail. Pixar made Wall-E a very real looking robot, and that means this maquette needs plenty of small detail. GG has done a nice job reproducing the beloved ‘bot, right down to the rivets. With a combination of sculpted textures (sometimes smooth) and paint, they’ve captured the look of metal in resin.

    He’s in a rough period here, with lots of dings, dents and scuffs, many of them sculpted into the basic square body. While we saw him in varioius stages of damaged to clean throughout the movie, I think this is the most iconic look for him. The proportions are good, and at about 6 1/2″ without the base, he looks pretty good with other sixth scale figures.

    Paint – ***1/2
    The paint work almost gained that extra half star, but for one issue.

    I love the damage and dirt, which has been applied liberally and realistically. The paint work has also added quite a bit of realism to the metallic look, improving the sculpt as any great paint job should. There’s lots of detail work, and while the dirt tends to blend some of the color pallette, there’s enough variation here to remain interesting.

    The issue? Ah, that’s easy – the stickers. Wall-E’s name on the front of his body is a sticker, as is the energy gauge on his chest. At this price point, I was expecting a high quality tampo sort of print job, not an obvious sticker.

    Design – ***
    As I mentioned earlier, it’s somewhat unique that the statue of Wall-E does not attach to the included base. Of course, with those wide treads, there’s no chance he’d ever topple over. Even so, it’s generally accepted that a statue should attach to the base, so it was a bit of a revelation. It’s also a nice feature, in case you’d rather display him without the white disc.

    And white disc is really all the base is. That and a nameplate. The nameplate isn’t of the character but the movie, but since they are one in the same in this case, it’s a moot point. I’m very disappointed with their design choice with the base. It’s supposed to look like the inside of the ship of course, but I would have much prefered something from Earth. Considering all the cool potential with the vast junk yard Wall-E spent most of his life in, this plain white base is quite a let down. Had they gone with an Earth design, we could have also gotten the cricket hiding in there!

    The design of Wall-E himself is much better. They’ve gone with his pensive appearance, with his hands clasped in front and a wide expectant look in his eyes. It reminds me of when he was hoping to hold Eve’s hand, or early on when he was watching My Fair Lady, as is surely GG’s intention. The pose fits the character, reminds me of perhaps the best part of the film, and is dynamic enough to give him some visual pop.

    Value – **
    At a retail of $125, you’re paying a pretty hefty price for a 6″ statue. Because Wall-E is about as wide as he is tall, he is bigger than the usual 6″ statue, but breaking that $100 mark is still quite a stretch. The production run is so low, however, that it’s going to be tough to impossible to find a real deal.

    Things to Watch out For –
    The metal post that holds the head in place can easily damage the resin body, so take care inserting it or removing it. It’s a tight fit too, so you might want to turn it slightly as you work it in or out. But be careful!

    Overall – ***1/2
    The price point is high at some places, but if you’d ordered back before he shipped, you could find stores selling him for $100. Unfortunately, demand was greater than supply this time around, and finding one now is going to take some patience and dedication. In fact, the Remy maquette from Ratatouille is selling out fast as well, while the Linguine and Eve seem easy enough to get. Gentle Giant could easily have a winner on their hands here, as collectors who love the Pixar movies have had very few high end choices. If they can produce a Sully, Mike, Buzz, and Woody this nicely, they’d all move extremely well.

  • Opinion In A Haystack: UP Makes Children Cry

    Hollywood hates children. Well, nowadays, for the most part. The past decade has seen a decline in the realm of family films so drastic it’s almost embarrassing to behold. A constant barrage of sub-par, placating, dreck that insults the intelligence of the child and the adult they will one day grow to be. Substance and craft are no longer the main concerns for children and families, simply be garish, be happy, and NEVER be realistic in tone (DEATH DOESN’T EXIST, ONLY iPods DO!!!) The youth of today have virtually nothing to grow up with and rediscover as surprisingly well-made entertainment, all they have is films equivalent to my generation’s Masters Of The Universe (great for nostalgia, not so great for adult criticism.) They need, and deserve, more fare like Beetlejuice, Return to Oz, Gremlins, or The Neverending Story (yes, I’m bias)… films where they grow up, re-watch and think “Holy hell! This was for kids?” They are feeding them messy piles of sugary air such as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, or Night At The Museum (1 or 2, take your pick), which are so hackneyed and sloppy that the slightest hint of adolescent logic or understanding of story structure forces them to collapse under their own faulty welds and lashings. However, in a world of film that treats kids like permanently-imbecilic-spider-monkeys, there is still Pixar.

    And Pixar has balls. SEXY. PLUMP. BALLS.

    Not even going to bother jumping on the Pixar worship-wagon here. You know, as well as I do, about their reputation and their increasingly growing catalogue of well-crafted films that are arguably genre masterpieces (Wall-E, The Incredibles) or great against all odds (Cars: completely entertaining in spite of stilted-premise and Larry The Cable Guy.) Up continues this trend, possibly in the animation house’s greatest triumph of supremely original ideas and adult-story-telling-for-kids.

    The film opens by following the life, from pre-adolescence to golden years, of Carl Fredricksen (voiced by the great Ed Asner.) He is an old man with an unfulfilled dream of adventuring in the South American wilderness and a home that is being strangled by industrial development. In short, he ties thousands upon thousands of balloons to his house and floats away, toward South America, on what is to be the last adventure of his life, one that he is forced to share with a young boy who inadvertently is on his porch during take off. Simple right? Odd right? Confusing right? Right, but it’s the approach that matters.

    Amongst the fantastical elements in the film, the ones that can be seen in the trailer, like a house being floated by mere balloons, talking dogs, or elderly men being WAY too physically active for their own good, Up has a grounded heart and realism in place that metaphorically punches the adult-mind in the gut, and righteously, yet not viciously, sprays pepper-sauce in children’s faces (the kid next to me in the theater cried A LOT.) The movie deals with death, abandonment, and the loss of heroes at the fore front of its surface.

    ******************SPOILERS START HERE**************************

    This blunt realism kicks right off, as the beginning of the film introduces us to the epitomes of pure cuteness and naivete that are young Carl and Ellie (his future wife.) They both seek adventure and have the same hero, Charles Muntz (voiced by the legendary Christopher Plummer), and we are treated to a montage of their life together. We witness their marriage, their home life, their romance, their laughter, and eventually, their inability to conceive children (yup,) and ultimately their parting. THAT’S RIGHT. Ellie dies. Not just dies, but dies in a montage around 20 minutes or so into the film… Pixar sets you up, and knocks you down… all to the loving tunes of a soothing and sad score. All that went through my mind was “Holy hell! This is for kids?” Which, trust me, is a huge compliment.

    Pixar’s balls, by this point in the movie are already huge and pulsating, but they still get even bigger. The reason Carl even floats his home in the first place is because the government is taking it away and forcing him into a retirement-home due to him attacking a construction worker with his cane (drawing blood!) Through the course of the film we also see Carl discover that his (and Ellie’s) childhood hero is a deranged, psychopathic, MULTI-murderer and that the kid, Russell, has a deadbeat dad who basically wouldn’t care if he lives or dies… we even see dogs getting hurt and possibly killed (due to their own actions, its not Pixar’s Hostel.) Topping off the dark tones found here is a joke played on the audience that is so genius, cruel and hilarious that scriptwriter Bob Peterson must have been laughing since the day he put it on paper. I won’t spoil it for you. Heh.

    Up‘s realism, risks, and complimentary attitude toward the audience is not the only positive however. In no way am I trying to sell it on the merits of making children cry alone… ok, maybe a little. It is also quite successful on all other standard fronts, and it’s got plenty of well-executed laughs and a grand vibrant color scheme. The script is extremely original, not to mention the cast of characters which includes a huge bird, Dug the Dog, and his fellow army of talking K-9 brethren. Dug is the comedic stand out of the movie, as his dialogue perfectly plays out the awkward nature of how dogs would actually sound if they could miraculously speak English. All the main players in the movie get their own small, but useful, character-arcs… even the bird (oddly the only character not able to speak.)

    The fantastical elements are handled in a way that doesn’t grate the logic. Unlike sloppy piles of confusion like the continuity, rules, or consistency of the magic tablet in Night At The Museum 2, the material here is given mystery and logic where it needs it, and glazes over where it doesn’t… which is why you wont be questioning how Muntz (Christopher Plummer) invented a collar that translates dog speak to English, or how those balloons wouldn’t remotely lift that house, let alone tear it from it’s foundation (I believe Mythbusters tested a similar idea, and it was only picking up the weight of a single child)

    The triumph of the animation here is that Pixar does make art, but they don’t try to re-invent the wheel when the wheel is working just fine. The movie is absolutely beautiful, not as visually breath taking as Wall-E, but still it looks fantastic. The blocking of some of the scenes is incredible, the little house mushroom-topped with a cloud of balloons floating across a vast blue sky in an ultra-wide shot is iconic and slightly haunting, especially considering the “rainbow” visual of the balloons. Up, much like most of Pixar’s flicks, excels in its craft (from all angles, writing, direction, choreography) and not merely in the technology of the craft. The digital 3D print is especially gorgeous, and is highly recommended.

    It’s not often that a bitter old grump like me sees a film and can’t find too much negative to say about it. If I had to really rack my brain, I guess I could say the only problem was that maybe the movie makes Carl too much of a physical action hero at times, considering his age, but it’s handled with such care in the narrative of the movie, so its not a big deal, and certainly not out-weighing the good. This is probably Pixar’s least marketable film yet, being so morbid an odd. The less broad they get, the better they get…which is kind of a mind boggler when concerning Pixar… how do they continue to get better? How? In this case most of the praise should be directed toward director Pete Doctor, who some how improved on his wonderful Monsters Inc. with this new offering.

    Also, just to put things into perspective, this review was written by someone who doesn’t even honestly like computer-generated animation at all, and who has really never publicly “sucked off” Pixar. Up was just class-A entertainment, and perhaps an arguable masterpiece in the family film genre. It’s good to know that this generation has at least a few movies, like Up, to grow older with and re-watch and see the adult themes, the quality craftsmanship and exclaim “This was for kids?”

    Star Trek: a few weeks later…

    J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek was great fun. As a die hard Original-Cast-film fan, still have no debilitating complaints… except, upon further reflection… it was great, but it really just isn’t Star Trek. Long Live Shatner.

    Annoyed at “revisiting” reviews

    Something that grates on the nerves is when an old franchise is resurrected (Terminator) or announced to be resurrected (Ghostbusters) and we have to sit through a plethora of reviews, rants, and ravings by young-ins saying how the originals (T1, T2, Ghostbusters) are overrated in the first place. Just want to say: SHUT UP JUNIOR! Your ill-informed meandering is not making your CGI-raped re-imagining any less horrendous.

    What’s in a name?

    If you hate McG, director of Terminator Salvation, simply because of his name then your opinion is invalid. First, his real name is McGinty, “McG” is the nickname given to him by his family… it’s not a self-chosen moniker due to douchebaggery. Second, hate him because his movies are sub-par… even though to hear the guy talk it really seems like he is actually trying, just failing miserably.

    Exterminators exterminate… so Terminators should… ?

    If you are going to make Terminator 4, if you just can’t help but do it, and you have to make it a heaping pile of poorly constructed blandness… could you at least follow the one rule that even the hokey Terminator 3 didn’t break? If a Terminator, no matter what make or model, gets its hands on a human, don’t let the machine give a dramatic pause, don’t let the machine just “play around” with them, let them INSTANTLY kill. Terminator 1-3 never let the villains even touch the targets… why? Because they are terminators, they would terminate at all costs. Why couldn’t you at least follow this logic? Why sir?

Taxi (the Queen Latifah movie), Balls of Fury, The Pacifier, Let’s Go To Prison, Herbie Fully Loaded, Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum 2: Battle for the Smithsonian… Your film work reads like the listings for a multiplex in the deepest circles of hell… what is going on there guys?

  • Backlash: The Bat-Oscars

    Are the Oscars As We Know Them Doomed? We Can Only Hope….

    As the entire world seems to pause for a moment for the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, some of regular life goes on, even in Fantasy Land, better known as Hollywood, USA. The Motion Picture Academy announces their nominees for the Oscars this week and with nothing better to do than talk out their collective asses, a fair portion of the entertainment media are squawking about whether or not the awards can survive if they don’t crown a ‘popular’ film Best Picture (read: Batman: The Dark Knight).

    There’s some logic to the argument if you look at the awards in a purely television special / ratings extravaganza event. Last year’s Oscar telecast was one of the lowest rated in years and some attribute that to a lack of a popular choice among the moviegoing public, something for them to ‘root for’, as though this were a NASCAR race. I’m sure the network would love for there to be a choice like The Dark Knight among the Best Picture nominees on Thursday and they might get their wish. Fact is, Christopher Nolan made a pretty good film in a year when some of the most interesting films to come out of Hollywood were in genres traditionally ignored by the Academy. Filmmakers have finally figured out that viewers can take their heroes with some flaws, something comic readers have been able to handle since the 1960’s. The heroes of Iron Man and The Dark Knight appeal to the general public in a time when the world is viewed in ever-darkening shades of gray, making those films as relevant as any to hit screens in recent years. If Warners can manage to not completely fuck up Watchmen (which I still have my doubts about), it might even be in this conversation a year from now. But to actually state that not nominating a film like Dark Knight for Best Picture could signal the end of the Oscars as we know it is such a complete load of bullshit that you could smell the odor in Australia.

    It has also been something of a banner year for the much-maligned (usually with good reason) Animated Feature Film (or, as I like to call it, “The Oscar We Just Give to Pixar Every Year They Release a Film”). Pixar, as usual, made a good showing, this time with Wall-E and proved once again that the important part of any film, animated or otherwise, is a good script. For that reason, Wall-E is even being mentioned as a potential nominee in some of the non-traditional categories for animated films, such as Best Screenplay and even as a possible longshot for Best Picture. Disney, long absent from any conversation concerning a good animated feature that wasn’t co-produced with the aforementioned Pixar, managed to release Bolt, a film that looked a whole lot like it escaped from Pixar (in some respects, that’s just what it did). Even some of the releases geared straight for the kid market weren’t as mind numbing as they’ve been in the past. Just as a bit of full disclosure, I have actively voted against some Pixar films in the past when I’ve thought another film deserved the honor more, which is why the critic’s group I was a member of at the time gave the award to Wallace & Gromit over Cars. There will be a year when an animated feature is in the mix for Best Picture but this won’t be that year. The year it does happen, that film will have to defend itself against some pretty good animated films that came before it.

    First of all, the argument that the nomination & win of a “populist” film would be some sort of groundbreaking event is not only inaccurate, it’s ignorant. Titanic was a massively popular film, the highest grossing film of all time to date (Dark Knight currently sits at number two) and it took home the Best Picture award that year. So there’s the ‘blockbuster’ argument cut off at the knees. You can’t even make the ‘fantasy film’ argument any more since Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King made a pretty good showing that year, including taking that Best Picture statuette home to Hobbiton. Previously, high grossing science fiction or fantasy films would be thrown the bone of a nomination without a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. Films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and others really just took a spot away from films that might have had a slim chance of winning Best Picture. The way the Academy is structured now, any SF / fantasy film that is good enough to get a nomination in the Best Picture category has as good a chance to win as any other film that’s nominated.

    Which brings us back to The Dark Knight. I can’t remember a year when everyone from the film fans to us blowhards in the media haven’t carped on and on about how lousy the films were all year, only to be faced with a pretty tough decision when comes time to vote for the various awards. This year is no exception, with some really good films being considered as the nominations are being made. Gran Torino is possibly one of the best films Clint Eastwood has ever made. Slumdog Millionaire is this year’s “out of nowhere” film that is not only an art house choice but popular with general audiences that have seen the film. There are far more than five films that can be mentioned in this conversation but only five will be nominated. To say that Dark Knight should only be considered because of its popularity is the traditional slap in the face that these kinds of films almost always get from the ‘traditional’ press and members of the Academy who rely on the DVD screeners because their iron lungs won’t fit into the theaters. Thankfully, those contingents have been getting marginalized as time goes on, partially due to the internet but also because so many of the ‘old guard’ are either passing away or have figured out that a fantasy film no longer involves Buster Crabbe and might really be worth watching, even if the great-grandkids have a picture from the film on their lunch box or have downloaded it to their iPhone.

    The Dark Knight won’t be any kind of ‘hero’ to the Oscars regardless of whether it gets a Best Picture nomination or not and it shouldn’t be. The history of the Academy Awards is full of Best Picture winners that are little more than cheap rentals (if you can find them on video at all) while the runners up have gone on to become cherished classics of the medium. I have no doubt that, a decade from now, Dark Knight will be remembered and viewed a lot more than most of the films in the Oscar discussion this year. But the Oscars shouldn’t be about what film will be best remembered a decade from now but what the voters believe is the best film now. And that’s the way it should be, regardless of ratings or any other external influence. Of course, it won’t be that way, it probably hasn’t been for a whole lot of years and may never be that way again but we can all hope.

    Disregarding the moniker of “animated film” the movie was simply head and shoulders some of the best moviemaking to come to the masses. To boot, the film played well to kids as well. I take back a lot of what I initially thought about this film, namely that it cribbed from SHORT CIRCUIT (although, come on, the similarities are alarming) as the quality of the movie was superb.

    The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do?     I admit – I was wary of Wall-E. Cars had left me a little cold (and the creepy, post-apocalyptic, human-less but made by humans world it was set in was just disturbing), but Ratatouille was more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be, and my faith in Pixar was ready to be fully restored. If standard definition is still your cup of tea, then I recommend the Wall-E: 3-Disc Special Edition (Walt Disney, Rated G, DVD-$39.99 SRP), featuring an audio commentary with director Andrew Stanton, deleted scenes, a sneak peek at “Wall-E’s Tour Of The Universe”, a look at Ben Burtt’s sound design work, the “Presto” short, a brand-new short following the frustrated robot Burn-E, a look into the workings of Buy n Large, behind-the-scenes featurettes, Leslie Iwerks’s feature documentary The Pixar Story, and more. For you high-def enthusiasts, the Blu-Ray Wall-E (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$40.99 SRP) features all of the bonus features of the standard edition, plus the addition of picture-in-picture storyboards and commentary on “Burn-E”, pop-up commentary, video games, 3-D set fly-throughs, and Cine-Explore with Andrew Stanton. Take your pick, but be sure to pick up at least one.

    Kudos to Stephen Colbert for reviving the tradition of a pundit holiday special – just like the George Plimpton celebrations of yore – with A Colbert Christmas (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP). Would you believe it’s full of festive musical performances and opinionated tidings? And a video fire? BELIEVE IT!

    While I don’t think it’s quite the revelatory masterpiece that the hype made it out to be, I did enjoy Tropic Thunder (Dreamworks, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP). In a nutshell, the plot finds a group of spoiled, pampered actors – led by Ben Stiller, Robert Downey, Jr., and Jack Black – who are filming a Vietnam epic that derails after only a week’s worth of shooting under a first-time director (Steve Coogan). Pressed by the hard-ass, batshit crazy studio boss (Tom Cruise channeling Harvey Weinstein) to get the film made or else, the director decides to drop his actors into the real jungle for a bit of cinema verite. To reveal anything else would be spoiling some genuine surprises, so I can only suggest you check out the 2-disc unrated edition, featuring audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted/extended scenes, an alternate ending, video rehearsals, the MTV Movie Awards, and more. A Blu-Ray edition is also available ($39.99 SRP) with identical features, but presented in full HD.

    After a pair of unsatisfying “best-of” compilations spanning the show’s entire run, we finally go back to the beginning for a proper complete first season set of Spin City (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). Reuniting Michael J. Fox and the creator of Family Ties, Gary David Goldberg, Fox starred as the deputy mayor to the barely competent mayor of New York (played wonderfully by Barry Bostwick). The show played like a wonderful cross between Benson and Night Court, and I’m glad it’s finally getting some DVD respect. The 4-disc set features all 24 episodes, plus audio commentaries, a retrospective featurette with the cast and crew, and a 1996 Paley Center seminar with Fox & Goldeberg.

    After her turn in the Christmas special “The Runaway Bride”, some were worried about Catherine Tate reprising her role of Donna Noble as the 10th Doctor’s new companion in the fourth series of Doctor Who (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$99.98 SRP). I’m happy to report that those fears quickly dissipated right from the get-go, as Donna – and Tate – proved to be one of the Doctor’s finest companions in a season that saw the return of the Sontarans and Davros, plus a few more surprises to boot. The 6-disc set features all 14 episodes plus audio commentaries, deleted scenes, video diaries, the Children In Need special “Time Crash”, a retrospective featurette, Doctor Who Confidential, teasers, and trailers.

    There’ve been a boxful of previous soundtrack releases for the Indiana Jones films, but now we’ve got Indiana Jones: The Soundtrack Collection (Concord Records, $59.98 SRP). The set features expanded scores for all 4 films containing previously unreleased cues, as well as a bonus 5th disc with interviews (Williams, Spielberg, & Lucas) and additional cues from the films.

    If you’ve been patiently avoiding the single-disc releases for the next seasonal batch of that happy chap that lives in a pineapple under the sea, then you’ll rejoice in your purchase of SpongeBob Squarepants: Season 5 Volume 2 (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), whose 2 discs feature 21 episodes.

    Criterion sprinkles their cinematic fairy dust and delivers to film geeks another stellar special edition, this time for the acclaimed 1965 adaptation of John le Carre’s The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (Criterion, Not Rated, DVD-$39.95 SRP). In addition to the stunning new restoration to the film itself, the 2-disc set features a select-scene commentary from DP Oswald Morris, an interview with le Carre, a BBC documentary on the author, a 1967 interview with star Richard Burton, an audio conversation with director Martin Ritt, a gallery of set designs, and the usual Criterion essay booklet.

    I view the remastered editions of the original Star Trek to be a unique aberration that sometimes succeeds in providing a richer experience than the original effects work, but often just plays as just an awkward exercise. Still, you can now wrap things up with the release of the final season, Star Trek: Season Three – Remastered (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$84.98 SRP), featuring all 24 episodes plus the original and extended versions of “The Cage”, plus the third installment of Billy Blackburn’s home movies.

    It’s been edited to remove Kermit, but Jim Henson’s The Christmas Toy (HIT, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP) makes its DVD debut. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about last year’s toys becoming fearful that Santa’s new deliveries on Christmas Eve will replace them. There’s nothing like toy angst.

    By now, when one goes into a Werner Herzog film, one expects an experience wholly unique. That’s certainly what you get with Encounters At The End Of The World (Image, Rated G, DVD-$27.98 SRP), in which the filmmaker follows an extraordinary group of individuals carving out an existence at the literal end of the world – Antarctica. The 2-disc set features an audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, Jonathan Demme interviewing Herzog, and the theatrical trailer.

    Fans of The Who have been waiting years for a pristine release of the band’s 1977 concert in Kilburn, North London, and The Who at Kilburn 1977 (Image, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) certainly delivers that. It’s also one of the last concerts to feature drummer Keith Moon. The 2-disc set also contains the band’s 1969 concert from the London Coliseum, which is the first ever live recorded performance of Tommy.

    You know, I didn’t think I’d get anything out of Fred Claus (Warner Bros., Rated PG, DVD-$28.98 SRP) – starring Vince Vaughn as the bah humbug black sheep brother of goodnick Santa Claus (Paul Giamatti). Wouldn’t you know it, events conspire so that only Fred can save Christmas, and the bigger holiday miracle? I actually enjoyed the flick. Bonus features include additional scenes, an audio commentary, interviews, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. The Blu-Ray edition ($35.99 SRP) sports a bonus disc with the game Fred Claus: Race To Save Christmas.

    When it first premiered, I had Bones pegged as one of those quirky shows that couldn’t possibly survive the network ignoramusi for long. But here we are with Bones: Season Three (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) hitting DVD, and all of the quirkiness is still intact – and stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz are still having a ball as the lighter Mulder & Scully. The 5-disc set features extended editions of all 14 episodes, plus 4 bonus episodes from season 4, the unaired version of the episode “Player Under Pressure”, a gag reel, and more.

    The idea of Will Smith playing an antisocial ex-superhero who gets hooked up with an image consultant played by Jason Bateman seems like it should delight me to no end, but Hancock (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$34.95 SRP) just left me cold. Maybe that’s because it never seems to find the right tone for the material, careening from slapstick to serious often enough to give you whiplash. The 2-disc set features an unrated version of the film in addition to the theatrical version, behind-the-scenes featurettes, trailers, and more.

    The third season of How I Met Your Mother (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) is when the show finally started to turn a corner for me. I found the writing on the first two seasons to be forced and annoyingly “clever” – even though the actors were bringing their A game – but this season everyone started to loosen up and find a groove that could finally move the show towards ultimately becoming a classic. Here’s hoping they can maintain the momentum. The 3-disc box-set features all 20 episodes plus audio commentaries, additional scenes, featurettes, music videos, Lily & Marshall’s honeymoon videos, a gag reel, and more.

    A&E Home Video has leapt into the world of high definition with a pair of pre-existing catalogue releases that certainly set the stage for some nice drops in the future. First up is the inaugural season of their interstellar documentary series The Universe (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$79.95 SRP). The second is about as far from that as you can get – Macca’s most recent concert film, Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us (A&E, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP). Maybe we can get some of their licensed series soon, too. Blu-Ray Monty Python, anyone?

    Full disclosure time. I consider my very first crush to be on Punky Brewster. Just to show how aware I was at the time, as a wee lad, I even knew that the precocious Punky was played by a girl named Soleil Moon Frye – who I vowed I would one day marry. At least that’s what I told my friends while we played in our junk wood playhouse at the top of the hill behind Quantico base housing all those years ago. I never did marry Soleil (her loss, really), but I did watch her show. Now, thanks to those pop culture machiavellis at Shout! Factory, I can relive that long-ago crush with all four seasons of Punky Brewster (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$99.99 SRP). Not only does this 4-disc set feature the first season, but you get interviews with the cast and crew, as well as episodes from the animated It’s Punky Brewster. Some crushes die hard… “Punky Power,” indeed…

    It’s hard for them to dig themselves out of the hole the show has been going deeper and deeper into the past few years after its stellar first few seasons, but they at least attempted some course correction during the 7th season of Scrubs (Buena Vista, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP), attempting to bring the show back to more grounded humor and away from the live action Family Guy it had become. The 2-disc set contains all 11 episodes, plus audio commentaries, the making of “My Princess”. Alternate lines, deleted scenes, bloopers, and an interview with Ken Jenkins.

    It’s a legendary concert and now it’s gotten a suitably reverent release with Cheap Trick: Budokan! (Sony Legacy, $49.98 SRP), loaded with the original remastered release, the complete concert in its entirety, and a bonus DVD. I want you to want it. You know you want it.

    Minoru Kawasaki is a bizarre filmmaker whose bizareness is matched only by that of his films themselves. Don’t believe me? Check out the psychological thriller starring a 6-foot office-working Executive Koala, or the toupee-flinging crack detective The Rug Cop, or the wonderfully odd post-apocalyptic satire The World Sinks Except Japan (Synapse, Not Rated, DVD-$21.99 SRP each). Bonus features include featurettes, trailers, and an audio commentary on The World Sinks. Bi-zarre.

    Tick another one off the list, as the fifth and final season of The Odd Couple (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) makes its way to DVD. We’re running out of classic television series that are still absent from home video (I’m looking at you, full season Sgt. Bilko sets). The 3-disc set features all 22 episodes, plus Murray the Cop in drag.

    One of my nephew’s favorite Nick shows is The Fairly Oddparents, so I’m sure he’ll eagerly devour The Fairly Oddparents: Season 6 Volume 1 (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP). The 2-disc set contains 16 episodes, including The Fairly Odd Baby movie.

    I am not the target audience. At all. But I know the target audience is probably screaming in giddy anticipation for the release of Hannah Montana: Season 1 (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP). The 4-disc set features all 26 episodes, plus a behind-the-scenes featurette, highlights, and Miley Cyrus’s opening song from the 2008 Disney Channel Games.

    A staple of my 80’s Nick At Nite viewing returns with its sophomore outing in the form of Father Knows Best: Season Two (Shout! Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). The 5-disc set features all 36 episodes starring Robert Young as the very epitome of the 50’s TV family man.     There were times during the 3rd season of The Unit (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) that I felt where I was watching a post-modern, serious version of the A-Team‘s final season.     The pants-loving foursome is back in The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.98 SRP), which finds the four best friends finishing up their first year of college and journeying out into the world during their summer break.     Continuing the tradition begun with Monsters, Inc., we’re gifted with another beautiful collection of production artwork and designs for Pixar’s latest flick with The Art Of Wall-E (Chronicle Books, $40.00 SRP). Chronicle and Pixar have really set the standard for how to pull the volumes together, and their presentation is always top-notch. My only complaint is I wish it were at least twice as long.

    Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of sci-fi (or Dick Tracy, or The Venture Bros.) surely must have dreamed of the day that mankind would finally develop the technology needed to realize the video watch. That’s right – the ability to watch incredibly sharp video on your wrist. And view pictures. And listen to MP3s. Well, the dream has been realized with the Stainless Steel Video Watch ($129.99).     Though my favorite Billy Joel album remains the severely underrated Turnstiles (I spent an entire summer with a friend tooling around in his VW bug listening to “Summer, Highland Falls”), a close runner-up would be the album that saved Joel from being dumped by his label, and cemented him as an artist to be reckoned with – 1977’s The Stranger. In (belated) celebration of the album’s anniversary, we get the fully remastered 2-disc The Stranger: 30th Anniversary Edition (Sony Legacy, $49.98 SRP), featuring not only the original album, but also a never-before released live recording of Billy’s Carnegie Hall performance on June 3, 1977. As an extra bonus, the set also includes a bonus DVD featuring a newly-produced making-of documentary, original promotional films, and Billy’s 1978 concert for Britain’s Old Grey Whistle Test. Hopefully the rest of his early albums get the same kind of revisiting.

    And while we’re on the topic of expanded revistings, I must mention the new deluxe editions of both the eponymous Elton John and my favorite Elton album, the country rock Tumbleweed Connection (Universal/Rocket, $29.98 SRP each). Both discs feature glittering remasters, but the real treat is the bonus discs, which contain rare demo tracks and period live performances. With these two sets and the previously released Captain Fantastic and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, all we’ve got left is Empty Sky, Madmen Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Rock Of The Westies, and Caribou to complete the classic, must-have Elton set, before his music morphed into pappy, forgettable shit in the 80’s and 90’s. Where are you, 70’s Elton? Come back from wherever you went.

    Just when the summer doldrums were beginning to set in, I found out just why everyone has been fawning over Mad Men (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) – the AMC series about Madison Avenue ad execs in the early 60’s. The reason why everyone has flocked to it? Because it’s one hell of a great show. Check out the first season for yourself. The 4-disc set features all 13 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, and more. The first season is also available on Blu-Ray ($49.99 SRP), with identical bonus features.

    While we still can’t the series itself on DVD, at least we can watch the camp glory that is the Adam West Batman: The Movie (Fox, Rated PG, Blu-Ray DVD-$39.98 SRP) in full-blown high definition Blu-Ray. The disc features the same bonus features as the standard DVD, including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more.

    Even 20 years later, Heathers (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$19.97 SRP) holds up as a painfully funny snapshot of the awkward, cutthroat nature of high school. The new 20th anniversary edition of the film features a brand new transfer, but double dips from previous editions on an audio commentary, a retrospective featurette, a screenplay excerpt of the original ending, and the theatrical trailer. It does, however, feature one new retrospective featurette, “Return to Westerberg High”.

    Any flick that’s smart enough to cast both Patton Oswalt and Mindy Cohn is – at the very least – worth a viewing. Written and directed by Daniel Waters (the writer of Heathers), Sex And Death 101 (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$29.97 SRP) is one of those pleasant surprise on home video discoveries that you wind up enjoying. It stars Simon Baker as a man who receives a mysterious e-mail that details everyone he’s had sex with – and everyone he’ll have sex with in the future. Unfortunately, it’s uncertain if his list ends in commitment – or something far worse, as there’s an equally mysterious femme fatale on the loose (Winona Ryder) that’s targeting men guilty of sex crimes against women. Bonus features include an audio commentary, a featurette, and a trailer. A Blu-Ray edition is also available (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP), featuring identical bonus materials to the standard edition.

    From the director of the upcoming Pineapple Express comes a smart, gritty little indie flick about an escalating blood feud amongst a group of half brothers in the Arkansas back roads. In Shotgun Stories (Genius, Rated R, DVD-$24.95 SRP), the two sets of siblings – who knew different versions of their father, one a violent drunk and one a sober, middle-class man – come crashing together at their father’s funeral. The DVD features an audio commentary, an isolated score track, trailers, and more.

    To be honest with you, the only reason I ever watched Evening Shade (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) was for the presence of the ever-delightful Charles Durning. Sure, the rest of the cast – Burt Reynolds, Marilu Henner, Michael Jeter, Hal Holbrook, and Ossie Davis – was enjoyable, but I was there for Durning. The 5-disc set features all 24 first season episodes, but not a single commentary, featurette, or interview with Durning. Damn.

    If you’re in a pinch and need an entirely watchable, inoffensive romantic comedy to fill out a date with, look no further than Definitely, Maybe (Universal, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.98 SRP). The cast alone – including Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Banks, and Rachel Weisz – makes it an interesting proposition, and the story about a father trying to explain to his daughter about the past loves of his life prior to her mother is a nicely awkward premise.

    It’s certainly not a comedy classic, but there’s a goofy, almost 80’s quality about Drillbit Taylor (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$34.99 SRP), which stars Owen Wilson as a slacker fists-for-hire who’s contracted by a trio of nerdy high schoolers to act as their on campus bodyguard. Its 80’s-like quality is probably due to the fact that it’s based on an idea by John Hughes, even though the script was brought to life by Seth Rogen and Kristofor Brown. The unrated DVD features additional footage, an audio commentary, deleted/extended scenes, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Also available in Blu-Ray ($39.99 SRP).

    I’m sure you’re just as shocked as I am that Walker, Texas Ranger (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP) made it to a fifth season. I guess there’s no discounting the durability of ludicrously goofy shows that take themselves far more seriously than the acting and writing permits. Anyway, here’s another 25 episodes sure to delight anyone with a penchant for unintended comedy.

    If you’ve been missing the true-crime stories with a sly presentation that was City Confidential, then you want to check out the marriages gone sour stories recounted in Till Death Do Us Part (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$35.99 SRP). They key to enjoying the show is the witty, tongue-in-cheek presence of host John Waters. Yes, that John Waters. The 3-disc set features all 13 episodes, plus new introductions from waters and interviews.

    Kyra Sedgwick is back as homicide investigator Brenda Johnson in the 3rd season of Closer (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), facing down the return of a dormant serial killer, a missing child, and the mysterious death of a Homeland Security official. The 4-disc set features all 14 episodes, plus unaired scenes, a featurette, and a gag reel.

    Karl Malden and Michael Douglas are back on The Streets Of San Francisco (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) with the first volume of the second season. The 3 disc set features 11 episodes detailing the exploits of Lt. Mike Stone and Inspector Steve Keller as they face down convicts, robbers, and even an assassin. Yes. An assassin.

Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP) tells the tale of a rip in space that opens a portal to another dimension – but what lies beyond the rift? There’s plenty of bonus features as well, including an audio commentary, the animated story originally produced for the Futurama video game, deleted scenes, an animatic, bloopers, and much more.

    As a fan ever since it first unspooled over 20 years ago, I’ve thought it a crime that there’s been little-to-no Back To The Future merchandise. Every other franchise seems to be having its day in the sun over the past few years, and it’s high time BTTF got its due. Well, as and you shall receive, ’cause now we’ve got a prop replica of Doc Brown’s greatest invention – the Flux Capacitor ($275). Lovingly crafted and based on the original (inspired, as we all know, by a blow to the head while hanging a clock in the bathroom), this limited edition replica (only 1,000 made!) features sully functional light effects, whose frequency can be adjusted via the knobs within the unit’s case. Now where is the panel so I can input my destination date?

    If you were to transplant Grosse Point Blank to Belgium, you’d wind up with In Bruges (Universal, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP). Simple as that. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson star as hitmen Ray & Ken, who decide to kick back and enjoy a little downtime after a big job. Unfortunately, they’re not very good at the low-key touristy thing, so they soon find themselves in deep with the local crime boss (Ralph Fiennes). It’s a fun little flick that’s worth a spin. Bonus features include a making-of featurette, deleted scene, and a gag reel.

    If I have one disappointment with the soundtrack album to Pixar’s Wall-E (Disney Records, $ SRP) – with a score by Thomas Newman and a new song from Newman and Peter Gabriel – it’s that the disc doesn’t feature the piece that was used in the trailers from Michael Kamen’s Brazil score. Would it have been so hard to include it on the disc? Other than that, the album is a must.

    I’ve spoken many times of my Anglophilia, and my fascination with the oftimes bizarre and eccentric history of England. With that in mind, it’s understandable that I dug right in to London’s Strangest Tales: Extraordinary But True Stories From Over A Thousand Years Of London’s History (Robson Books, $13.00 SRP). Where else can you read about the Bishop of Winchester’s prostitutes and human lavatories?

    The History Channel’s dramatic recreations of classic wartime aerial combat makes their high-flying return with the complete second season of Dogfights (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$49.95 SRP). The 5-disc set features all 17 high-adrenaline episodes, plus additional scenes.

    I don’t know why exactly it is that it seems the bulk of today’s kiddie flicks compare unfavorably to the classics of yesteryear. Maybe it’s that manufactured sheen that it all seems to have – CGI is a sterile tool, and it adds a cold, uninvolved feeling to modern children’s films. Case in point is The Spiderwick Chronicles (Paramount, Rated PG, DVD-$39.99 SRP), based on the book series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. It’s all so digital and clean that a thousand Freddie Highmores with their preternaturally adult acting couldn’t elevate it much beyond a pleasant diversion. The 2-disc set features behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and more. A Blu-Ray edition is also available (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP), featuring identical bonus materials to the standard edition.

    If I had a time machine, somewhere on “to do” list would be to travel back just a few short years to when people like Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg proclaimed 2-D animation a dead artform and slap them over the head with a copy of the film Persepolis (Sony, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.95 SRP) – the animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s comic book version of her Iranian childhood during the Islamic Revolution, and her eventual move to France after the Fundamentalists took hold. Bonus features include an English language soundtrack, behind-the-scenes featurettes, audio commentary, the 2007 Cannes press conference, and more.

    I’m all for goofy, well-written fun in kids shows, and Tak And The Power Of Juju passes the “Does my 4-year-old nephew like it?” test. He likes it. And he also likes the first DVD volume, The Trouble With Magic (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$16.99 SRP). The disc features 10 episodes, plus 5 shorts, a featurette on the voices, and an animatic.

    Genre-bending shows are always a gamble on network television, as viewers are usually slow on the uptake and executives are quick to lower the axe. Occasionally, one slips through the cracks and is given some legs – such as Early Edition (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), which starred Kyle Chandler as Gary Hobson, a reluctant hero who is delivered the next day’s news in advance and must choose how he uses that information. Does he prevent tragedy? Does he buy a winning lottery ticket and profit off of it? Does he do both? The 6-disc set features all 23 first season episodes, plus promos.

    Despite the hokey kitsch value the success of the Broadway musical version has brought it, Xanadu (Universal, Rated PG, DVD-$19.98 SRP) is still an awful movie. Now, however, you can get this awful film in a new special edition, with a retrospective documentary and a photo gallery, plus a bonus soundtrack CD.

    If you were to take that early 90’s HBO staple Dream On and transport it to Showtime and reinvent it as an edgy dramedy about a sex and drug addicted author (David Duchovny), you’d have Californication (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). The 2-disc box set features all 12 first season episodes.

    If you were to ask Roland Emmerich to remake Caveman, the result would be 10,000 BC (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.98 SRP) – a laughably earnest look at a heroic caveman who must do battle with massive prehistoric beasties in order to rescue his kidnapped cave-gal. Bonus features include additional scenes and an alternate ending.

    Ignore that abysmal Roland Emmerich flick, and delve into the real pre-history with Journey To 10,000 BC (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). Would you guess that it’s a documentary featuring cavemen and mammoths? Wouldja?

    Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, Curt Swan, Fred Hembeck… Yes, Fred Hembeck. Destroyer of universes, gentle mocker, ooner of lamps, and master of four-color mirth, our very own Fred Hembeck has been honored with The Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus (Image, $24.99) – a massive 912-page tome packed with 30+ years worth of Fred’s strips, pin-ups, commissions, and ephemera. Get this. Get this now (and not just because I’m thanked in the book, or strips from Fred’s column here at Quick Stop are included… Nosiree…).

    Although my interest was certainly piqued, I in no way expected to be as swept up as I became in HBO’s miniseries on the political life of our 2nd president, John Adams (HBO, Not Rated, DVD-$59.99 SRP). But swept up I was, and it certainly brought all of the drama, disagreement, infighting, political machinations, interpersonal issues, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles that led to the formation and establishment of the United States as an independent, thriving democracy. As Adams, Paul Giamatti certainly earns the Emmy he is most assuredly due, alongside the equally Emmy-worthy Laura Linney as his wife, Abigail. The true test of a miniseries like this is if it manages to make history engrossing, and it succeeds in spades. The 3-disc set features a behind-the-scenes documentary, a spotlight on author David McCullough, and an onscreen historical guide.

    Going in, I had my reservations about Jumper (Fox, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.99 SRP). Even though it was directed by Doug Liman, it starred Hayden Christensen. That name is cause enough for trepidation. Surprisingly, though, Jumper is a great sci-fi flick. During a high school trauma, David Rice (Christensen) discovers he can “jump” – essentially, that means he can teleport to any location he can “see”. Leaving behind his troubled home life and using his powers to create a new life, he’s soon confronted by a mysterious gentleman (Samuel L. Jackson) hell-bent on eliminating him. He soon discovers that he’s far from alone with his gifts, and there’s a centuries-old war being fought. It’s fast, fresh, and fun… I know! I’m still surprised! Bonus features include an audio commentary, a behind-the-scenes documentary, featurettes, an animated graphic novel, deleted scenes, previz, and more.

    As far as classic seasons go, I’d have to include the 4th season of The Odd Couple (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), as it’s packed with classic episodes and both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall are in full stride. The 4-disc set features all 22 episodes, but sadly no bonus features.

    I’ll never escape a jungle prison with nothing more than bubblegum and a fire ant, but I admit to feeling just a little bit MacGyver-ish when wielding the Utili-Key 6-in-1 tool (Swiss+Tech, $9.99). While at first glance it may seem to be nothing more than your average car or house key, its simple appearance hides the usual complement of ingeniously designed Swiss gadgetry – including both a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver, a micro eyeglass screwdriver, a bottle opener, a serrated knife blade, and a straight knife blade. Now, about that bomb…

    Not realizing just want kind of legs the series would wind up having, Fox originally released the first season of 24 as a borderline bare-bones DVD set. Eager to rectify that mistake (and get fans to purchase a second version), we’ve now got 24: Season One – Special Edition (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP). The 7-disc set features an intro from Keifer Sutherland, audio commentaries on the premiere and the finale, extended/deleted scenes, an alternate ending to the season finale, a newly-produced documentary, The Rookie vignettes, and a letter from the co-creators.

    Rest assured that not only is Steve McGarrett back in the fourth season of Hawaii Five-O (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP) but so is Dano, as in addition to their usual criminal line-up, they also take on the evil Wo Fat. The 6-disc set contains all 24 episodes, plus the original episode promos.

    After losing themselves in the wilderness of HD-DVD for a year, Paramount has come in from the cold with a full embrace of the high-def victor, Blu-Ray, with a clutch of releases to get up to speed. They all sport the same bonus features as the standard definition discs (save for Bee Movie, which does have some exclusive materials), but fancy-pants cinephiles can now pick up Cloverfield (Paramount, Rated PG-13, DVD-$39.99 SRP), There Will Be Blood (Paramount, Rated R, DVD-$39.99 SRP), Blades Of Glory (Paramount, Rated PG-13, DVD-$39.99 SRP), Bee Movie (Paramount, Rated PG, DVD-$39.99 SRP), Face/Off (Paramount, Rated R, DVD-$ 39.99SRP), and Next (Paramount, Rated PG-13, DVD-$39.99 SRP).

    There’s always something mildly off-putting about reunion movies featuring the aged cast of beloved TV shows. Maybe that’s because they’re usually frozen in our memories looking and acting like they did when we last saw them, regardless of how time has since treated the actors. Such is the case with the pair of flicks contained on the Dukes Of Hazzard: Two-Movie Collection (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) – Reunion! and Hazzard In Hollywood. Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) is sorely missed.

    If you made up the story of Raymond Burr’s life, you would call it a an outrageous soap opera fabrication – but the truth is just as outrageous as fiction, as you’ll discover in the biography Hiding In Plain Sight: The Secret Life Of Raymond Burr (Applause, $24.95 SRP). Who knew that the actor that brought Perry Mason to vivid life was a closeted homosexual that led an elaborately fabricated public life, to the extent of having lied on the witness stand about a fictional wife and child lost to tragedy. A fascinating read, to say the least.

    Since everyone and their brother seems to be releasing westerns from their catalogues these past few months, it makes sense that Lionsgate would want to revisit High Noon (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP). The new 2-disc special edition features an audio commentary, a retrospective documentary, featurettes, a Tex Ritter radio broadcast, and more.

    I think I’m going to coin a new term for The Bucket List (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.98 SRP) – “Quantum Comedy”. That’s because, while I’m sure it was supposed to be a rollicking hoot of a flick, with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman pursuing the contents of their respective “Before I Die” lists, every time I observed what should have been an enjoyable scene, the enjoyment just seemed to vanish. I knew it must be there – but it wasn’t there, at the same time. Odd, right? Bonus materials include a featurette on writing your own list and a music video.

    If you never got around to picking up either Soap or What’s Happening!! (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$59.95 SRP each) when they were being released as individual seasons, now’s your chance to make all those early buyers look like chumps by picking up the complete series box sets at a hefty discount. The content and disc counts are exactly the same, but now they’re all in one box and dirt cheap.

    Not one, but two more actresses get the featured collection treatment – Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve. The Sophia Loren 4-Film Collection (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) contains Atilla, I Girasoli, Madame Sans-Gene, and Carosello Napoletano. The Catherine Deneuve 5-Film Collection (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) features Manon 70, Le Sauvage, Hotel Des Ameriques, Le Choc, and Fort Saganne.

    Back in the early days of DVD, Image licensed a whole slew of catalogue titles from Universal – basically, a lot of smaller titles that Universal wouldn’t be getting around to any time soon, including titles like Flash Gordon, Earthquake, and Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (and, indeed, Universal took nearly a decade to finally get to some of those under their own banner). In a similar vein, Legend Films has licensed a massive quantity of catalogue titles from Paramount – some minor classics, some cult, and some that at least have a curiosity factor to them. The first wave just streeted, and includes the following titles: Baby It’s You, Mandingo, Rhubarb: The Millionaire Cat, The Possession Of Joel Delaney, Hitler: The Last Ten Days, Jekyll & Hyde: Together Again, Blue City, Daniel, The Pied Piper, Partners, King Of The Gypsies, Almost An Angel, French Postcards, Serial, Man, Woman & Child, Girl On The Bridge, Money From Home, Hurricane, Villa Rides!, The Optimists, Papa’s Delicate Condition, Desperate Characters, The Whoopee Boys, Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood, Student Bodies, Those Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies, ZPG: Zero Population Growth, The Busy Body, Houdini, The Skull, and The One And Only (Legend Films, Rated-Var, DVD-$14.95 SRP each). They’re bare bones releases, but kudos to Legend for getting them out into the market.

    The one-armed man is still on the loose in the first volume of The Fugitive‘s second season (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), and Richard Kimble is still on the run from Lt. Gerard. So, really, nothing much has changed. The 4-disc set features the first 15 episodes of season 2.

    When a TV show is successful, there’s always the a certain amount of curiosity as to whether the characters would transfer to the big screen. Sadly, Don Adams’s Maxwell Smart did not do too well in the transition, which meant the sublime genius that was Get Smart became the tepid disappointment of The Nude Bomb (Universal, Rated PG, DVD-$19.98 SRP). It’s worth viewing as a curiosity, but nothing more.

    It’s a bit of a grab bag, but The Air I Breathe (Image, Rated R, DVD-$27.98 SRP) is worth a look see for the cast alone – Forest Whitaker, Andy Garcia, Kevin Bacon, Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Emile Hirsch . The story itself is an elaborate, intricate, if ultimately flawed crime drama that’s like a cross between Guy Ritchie and Richard Kelly.

    All good things must come to an end, and so must things that lived a few years beyond their shelf life – the eighth and final season of Home Improvement (Buena Vista, Not Rated, DVD-$23.99 SRP) is an excellent case in point. The 4-disc set features all 28 episodes, plus a new cast reunion special and a blooper reel.

    Having long ago given up on watching it since being disappointed when after its first few outings on Adult Swim and the first season DVD, I was curious to see if my opinion would be changed by the second season of Boondocks (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$49.95 SRP). The answer, sadly, is that beyond some great design and animation, it’s still flat and, frankly, boring. The 3-disc set features all 15 episodes, plus audio commentaries, introductions, featurettes, and minisodes.

    It’s a testament to the artists at Pixar and the toymakers at Thinkway that I spent a solid two hours watching my 4-year-old nephew go absolutely giddy over the U-Command Wall-E (Thinkway Toys, $49.99 SRP). Standing about 9″ and operating via an infrared remote control, Wall-E is an interactive ball of fun, as you command him to speak, dance, look around, or just take a tour of the room. It’s hands-on and captures the quirky little robot to a “t”, and makes me wish that the Ultimate Wall-E due out later this year would arrive sooner. Until then, though, I’m sure we’ll get plenty of enjoyment out of this one.
