    It’s the first of May. Our friend Jonathan Coulton is no doubt receiving an endless amount of bad jokes on Twitter today. I however have decided to instead dedicate my time to bringing you my favourite things from last month. You know, because I’m awesome like that.

    1) Thumb Snatchers From The Moon Cocoon

    This is a rather mental short film from Bradley Schaffer. It a hand-made stop-motion story of a Texan Sheriff taking on a bungling alien invasion. It has deservedly won a ton of awards, maybe not specifically for being bat-shit insane but I’m sure that is a big part of it. Think Axe Cop meets Mars Attacks and you’re half way there.

    2) Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars Filibuster

    No doubt you’re already aware of this. It has already become legendary. Parks & Recreation had comedian Patton Oswalt as a guest star for a couple of episodes. In the following scene the producers of the show asked him to come up with his own words for the filibuster he had to act. What Patton comes up with is nothing short of inspired and completely crazy. I mean, Moon Knight is a Marvel A-lister? C’mon!

    3) And on that note…

    Harrison Ford appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show and questions of the new Star Wars movie came up. What happened was rather wonderful. He hasn’t lost a step!

    By the way, any video where Harrison Ford says “You Wookie sack of shit” will always get a showing in this column.

    4) Goalunited

    I’ve been obsessed for a number of weeks with this online football management simulator. It’s a real-time game so unlike most football games, you can’t skip to the next match. League games are Wednesdays and Saturdays and unless you’re playing in a cup competition or have arranged a friendly, you have to wait for Wednesday and Saturday for your next match. But fret not, there are loads of things to be doing in the mean time like organising training, scouting youth players, trading on the transfer market and negotiating sponsorships.

    In fact, the game is so in-depth you even pick what products to manufacture in your club shop and have to arrange for production! Of course a lot of these features aren’t available at first, as you have to build up your experience but it doesn’t take long for things to become unlocked.

    I’m completely in love with my team (Phoenix Park Tuesday) and managed to win my league in my first season! But now that I’ve been promoted to a higher league I’m getting my ass handed to me on a regular basis. It’s a serious challenge.

    It’s a true loss that Nat Hiken’s Car 54: Where Are You? (Shanachie, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP) only made it to two seasons, as it’s truly one of the most grossly underappreciated television comedies ever made. Thankfully, we now have both of those seasons on DVD, thanks to the fine folks at Shanachie. Go. Get them both, and watch the merry misadventures of Officers Toody and Muldoon.

    Even if you’re not steampunky, it’s hard to resist the charm of the positively beautiful Solar Powered Turbine Fob Watch ($129.99). Styled in pewter and copper with many a steampunk accent – right down to the turbine-like inset on the lid – it doesn’t quite go all the way, featuring instead of mechanics a reliable battery-powered quartz movement.

    I would say that Patton Oswalt: Finest Hour (Comedy Central, Not Rated, DVD-$16.99 SRP) is a pretty accurate title when it comes to Patton’s latest stand-up special, which certainly finds him at the top of his game , even if sweatpants don’t make it out unscathed. Bonus materials include an encore and a pair of featurettes.

    The best way to describe the brilliant new stand-up special from the brilliant Paul F. Tompkins is that it’s an oral history of the career of comedian Paul F. Tompkins. Suffice to say, you would regret it for the rest of your days if you do not purchase Paul F. Tompkins: Laboring Under Delusions (Comedy Central, Not Rated, DVD-$14.95 SRP). Bonus materials include an audio commentary with a director, an encore, and an episode of his Pod F. Tompkast.

    The dandy scribe behind Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, explores another slice of class warfare – this time historic – with the 4-part miniseries Titanic (E1, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP), a much-better-than-James-Cameron look at the various societal and economic tiers at play on the doomed ocean liner.

    Have a little Jackie Gleason-thon in high definition this weekend with the Blu-Ray arrival of the guilty pleasure comedy The Toy (Image, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$9.99 SRP) and the much better Tom Hanks tearjerker Nothing In Common (Image, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$17.97 SRP). Both lack any bonus features, but who needs ’em when you’ve got Ned Beatty?

    Fox has released another of their star-specific DVD collections, this time bringing together 10 films for the Frank Sinatra Film Collection (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), featuring The Pride And The Passion. Kings Go Forth, A Hole In The Head, Can-Can, The Manchurian Candidate, Von Ryan’s Express, Cast A Giant Shadow, Tony Rome, The Detective, & Lady In Cement.

    The fine folks at Mill Creek continue to re-release seasons of a handful of TV classics for staggeringly rock-bottom prices you’d be foolish not to take advantage of. Included this time around are 3rd Rock From The Sun: Season 3 & 3rd Rock From The Sun: Season 4 (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP each), That 70’s Show: Season 3 & That 70’s Show: Season 4 (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP each), and Roseanne: The Complete Third Season & Roseanne: The Complete Fourth Season (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP each). The great thing? The sets contain all of the bonus features from the original releases.

    A movie lover who devoured old films, my grandmother would have loved if I had gifted her the dirt cheap, 12-disc genre sets Mill Creek has been releasing, mainly because each of those 12-disc sets – flicks of the 1950’s in The Nifty Fifties, Timeless Family Classics, & the crime/noir Dark Crimes (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP each)- contains 50 films. That’s right – FIFTY films.

    How incredible are the artisans at Hot Toys? So incredible, that their latest DX 12″ figure of Jack Nicholson’s Joker ($264.99) from Tim Burton’s Batman is remarkably, creepily accurate. Not only is the facial sculpt perfect, but the elaborate costuming, right down to the overcoat The Joker wore during the parade near the end, is completely in-scale accurate. And props! This thing comes with guns (BANG and ludicrously long), a megaphone, a remote control, chattering teeth, cash, and more. Get this incredible piece from the fine folks at Sideshow, or regret that you passed up the opportunity to do so.

    I’m still not sold on the exaggerated realistic character design they chose for Herge’s famous characters, but there’s enough verve and energy to make Spielberg & Jackson’s The Adventures Of Tintin (Paramount, Rated PG, 3D Blu-Ray-$54.99 SRP) a fun watch, careening from one set piece to the next in a similar vein to Spielberg’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark. And really, the only way to watch this at home, if you have the capability, is in 3D – they did a great job of making the environments immersive, particularly during the big chase near the end. Bonus materials include making-of featurettes and much more.

    If you want a nice and easy geek-friendly LEGO set for kids who might not have the skill or patience to tackle the larger sets, the LEGO Star Wars Droid Escape ($19.99) features C-3PO and R2-D2 with their Tantive IV escape pod plus a few Stormtroopers and a Speeder Bike to pursue them with.

    Arrested development and the delusion that goes with it is front and center in Young Adult (Paramount, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) when writer & one-time prom queen Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) heads back home and determines recapturing her married high school boyfriend is the way to relive a past long gone. Theron is brilliant, but she’s matched by Patton Oswalt, a fellow classmate who slaps her with the reality stick. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and more.

    It seems every month is a holiday for fans of the Doctor’s classic adventures as we get not only a special edition of the 10th anniversary special with Doctor Who: The Three Doctors (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP), but also a new special edition of 4th Doctor Tom Baker’s Doctor Who: The Robots Of Death (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$18.99 SRP). Both are real crackers, and are loaded with the usual clutch of commentaries, featurettes, knick-knacks, rarities, and more.

    Ah, but that’s not all of the new classic Who you’re getting this week! Oh no, no, no! There’s also a newly restored special edition of Patrick Troughton’s tin-plated tussle with cyberdoom in Doctor Who: The Tomb Of The Cybermen (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP) and 4th Doctor Tom Baker’s first encounter with savage companion Leela in Doctor Who: The Face Of Evil (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP). Again, there’s loads and loads of great bonus material for both. So is THAT enough new Who for you?

    Anyone who has had a loss that is at the same time sudden yet lingering will understand the power of a film like The Descendants (Fox, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), that even for its twist and the light it casts on the character who has gone into a coma after an accident, it still makes you feel for the lurch it places family her into. I really don’t want to give away much about the film, but suffice it to say she leaves a husband (George Clooney) and two troubled daughters to pick up the pieces. Just see it. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, interviews, and more.

    It was only a matter of time before Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation Of Christ (Criterion, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) made it to the high definition realm in a beautifully put together edition, and it should come as no real surprise that it’s from the fine folks at Criterion. Not only does the picture and sound get a healthy bump, but there’s also an audio commentary, interview with Peter Gabriel, location footage, photos, and more.

    It’s always a delight to get new Wallace & Gromit material, even if it’s in the form of interstitial around a spotlight on r3eal life gadgets and contraptions in Wallace & Gromit’s World Of Invention (Lionsgate, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$14.99 SRP), a 6-part series that does just that.

    The fine folks at Rifftrax have released a brand new pair of cinematic bombs made wonderfully hilarious – the dime store creature feature The Crater Lake Monster (Legend, Not Rated, DVD-$9.95 SRP) and the nickel store alien flick The Galaxy Invader (Legend, Not Rated, DVD-$9.95 SRP). Should you get both? Yes. You should get both. Right now.

    You know another installment of a film franchise is in the offing when the back-catalogue is dusted off for release, so it should come as little surprise that the forthcoming American Reunion brings the Blu-Ray debut of American Pie, American Pie 2, and American Wedding (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.98 SRP each). All 3 carry over all of the previous DVD special features, as well as adding a look at the upcoming sequel.

    They’re certainly not up to the quality of the original, but there’s enough charm and storytelling competence to make both The Lion King 1 1/2 & The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP each) decent viewing, and will probably hold the attention of most kids. Both have just gotten a full high definition release, sporting featurettes, deleted scenes, music videos, and more.

    The Warner Archive Collection has dug up a pair of Jim Brown rarities from the 70’s for your viewing pleasure. Tick Tick Tick (Warner Bros., Rated G, DVD-$19.95) finds brown starring as a southern sheriff caught in the middle of a breakdown in race relations, while The Slams (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$19.95) as a jailed criminal who needs to overcome quite a few obstacles to go over the wall and try and recover a hidden stash of cash before the demolition of its hiding place.

    Yeah, I’m not entirely sure anyone is supposed to understand what’s going on in Tarsem’s big Greek mythology epic Immortals (Fox, Rated R, 3D Blu-Ray-$49.99 SRP), but it is a captivatingly beautiful thing to look at in 3D, particularly any scene where the gods are doing battle. It’s a crazy flick, but definitely worth a look-see. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, an alternate opening, and alternate endings.

    Director Ralph Bakshi’s animated films are an acquired taste, and one I never have acquired. I can certainly see his passion, but the movies don’t speak to me. But there are plenty of people who have a special place in their heart for his fantasy film Wizards (Fox, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP), which arrives in high definition for a special 35th anniversary edition containing an audio commentary, featurettes, a TV spot, a gallery, and trailers.

    As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the legendary maritime disaster, it’s perfectly understandable that the History Channel is collecting together a trio of their best documentaries on the subject into Titanic: The Complete Story (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). The documentaries in question are Death Of A Dream, The Legend Lives On, and Titanic’s Achilles Heel.

    Michelle Williams certainly deserved her Oscar nomination for her turn as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn (Anchor Bay, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which focuses on the memoir of Colin Clark, who as a 23-year-old 3rd assistant director formed a special relationship with the very fragile superstar while she was in London filming The Prince And The Showgirl with the Sire Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). A lovely little flick.

    I’m not exactly sure what they were thinking with the overly-slick, utterly baffling new take on The Three Musketeers (Summit, Rated PG-13, 3D Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP). Well, I do know – they were trying to capture the same teenage audience that flocked to Twilight. And for them, this is probably a lovely bit of fluff. The 3-D edition contains an audio commentary and deleted scenes.

    Do you like penguins? Do you like them dancing? Do you like them talking with the voices of Elijah Wood and Robin Williams while they’re dancing? Did you like all of this when it was in an animated movie called Happy Feet? Then you’ll like the equally ingratiating Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros., Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), as Wood’s Mumble returns with a son in tow. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes and more.

    For Come Fly With Me (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) Matt Lucas and David Walliams have followed up their immensely successful run on Little Britain with a brand new series that weaves what are still essentially just recurring character sketches but with the conceit that all of these characters work and revolve around an airport, from ground crews to the rich airline owner. The set features all 6 episodes plus a behind-the-scenes documentary.

    How do you compress 13.7 million years of Earth’s existence into one concise special? Seems like a tall task, but it’s one History Of the World In Two Hours (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP) attempts to do, from the stellar formation of the planet all the way up to today.

    It’s still not my bag, but for those that enjoy Adult Swim’s Superjail (Adult Swim, Not Rated, DVD-$19.97 SRP), the complete second season set contains all 10 episodes plus a clutch of bonus materials.

    In the Tom Baker 4th Doctor story “City Of Death”, our traveling Time Lord encounters an art dealer selling actual originals of the Mona Lisa to fund his time experiments. The seemingly-debonair Count Scarlioni played by Julian Glover, is actually a time-splintered alien named Scaroth, who is eager to prevent the destruction of his ship over primeval Earth – an event that not only flung him through time, but also happened to have jump-started life on Earth. So yes, the Doctor must stop him. The City Of Death Collector’s Set (Underground Toys, $38.99 SRP) contains the Doctor and Cunt Scarlioni – who also has a swappable Scarloth head. Oh, and there’s also a Mona Lisa. Just don’t try to sell it.

    Much has been made about Bridesmaids (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP) being a female answer to naughty male-centric R-Rated comedies like The Hangover, but the simple truth – and reason for the success – of Bridesmaids is that it’s simply a very, very funny film. That, ultimately, is all that matters. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and more.

    You can never have too much Bender, so how can you not want the 9″ Talking Bender Figure ($24.99), which features interchangeable eyes and a clutch of phrases – from “Bite my shiny metal ass!” to “Would you kindly shut your noise hole!” See? You want it. Now go get it.

    While you’re awaiting the next full season box set, satiate your thirst with the latest single disc release Spongebob Squarepants: Spongebob’s Runaway Roadtrip (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$16.99 SRP), which finds out heroes taking a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The disc also includes a pair of bonus episodes.

    It’s always a delight to see a loving restoration of a Technicolor age film make its way to high definition, and Breakfast At Tiffany’s (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP) certainly lives up to those high expectations with a beautiful edition supplemented with an audio commentary, featurettes,, galleries, and more.

    You know what? I’m not even going to attempt to tell you what Patton Oswalt talks about in his newest album, Finest Hour (Comedy Central Records, $10.84 SRP). By now, you should just trust that whatever it is, you’re going to enjoy it. I did. TRUST REWARDED.

    The high definition Lionsgate releases of the Miramax catalogue are still coming fast and furious, with another clutch of titles to fill those gaps in your collection, including the toilet bowl cautionary tale Trainspotting (Miramax, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.99 SRP), Nicole Kidman & spooky kids in The Others (Miramax, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$14.99 SRP), and both Scary Movie 2 & Scary Movie 3 (Miramax, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$14.99 SRP each).

    Ken Burns turns his documentary lens towards America’s drunkest “sober” hour, Prohibition (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). The 3-disc set contains outtakes, bonus scenes, and a featurette – plus more shots of people doing things with alcohol than you can possibly imagine.

    I could hours watching Darren McGavin star as Mickey Spillane’s bareknuckle gumshoe Mike Hammer – which makes the release of Mike Hammer: The Complete Series (A&E, Not Rated, DVD-$89.95 SRP) perfect. The 12-disc set contains all 78 episodes. Now you can watch, too.

    Here we are, with the penultimate 11th season of the long-running Hawaii Five-O (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP), starring Jack Lord as ever Aloha criminals worst enemy, Steve McGarrett. The 6-disc collection features all 21 episodes. Now bring on the end!

    Oh, Warner Archive collection. Yet again, you unleash a clutch of titles the only a very few would ever think to ask you about, but at least they are now available to all. First you’ve got Michael Gough siccing his big cats on people in Black Zoo (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.95), then Martin Sheen kidnapping Linda Blair in Sweet Hostage (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.95), and finally a dying Hollywood curiosity The Phantom Of Hollywood (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.95).

    Yeah. I really can’t stand Glee (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$69.99 SRP). Who new that they could find a way in its second season to make it even more artificial and cloying. I suspected they could, and those suspicions were born out. But I know the Gleenoids will eat this set up, featuring all 22 episodes plus a jukebox, featurettes, a bonus song, and more.

    Oh, Danny Devito. Sure, the rest of the cast is ace and the show is funny, but I’m only really watching the 6th season of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.99 SRP) for that fun-sized comedic genius. Bonus materials include an extended cut, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, podcasts, a blooper reel, and more.

    Billie Piper has one last go as high-class escort Hannah “Belle” Baxter in the 3rd and final season of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), which finds are at the cusp of a dilemma – keep selling herself or settle down with her best friend?

    The 200th anniversary specials focusing on the American Civil War continue with the documentary Lee & Grant (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$24.95 SRP), which focuses on the two opposing generals, and an in-depth look at the battle that changed the course of the war, Gettysburg (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP), from producers Ridley & Tony Scott.

  • Wonderful World of Talkies: Tenacious D & Friends Stand With Haiti

    Howdy Interwebbers. I’m Matt Cohen and I dig the D.

    Of course, I am referring to Tenacious D – the folk-metal guitar duo made up of Jack Black (Jables) and Kyle Gass (Kage). I’ve been getting my socks rocked off’ since high school, and have been an avid follower of all things D ever since. I voraciously devour their new albums and attend as many live shows as I can, so it was to my delight and surprise that the boys had put together an epic night of comedy and music… and better yet, it was for a great cause. I snagged my ticket, patiently waited a few weeks, ventured out in the heart of Korea Town (and hunted for a good/free parking spot, WHICH I found, thank you very much) and was presented with a night of performances I would never forget.

    Want to live vicariously through me? Well, besides it being a tad creepy… I’m flattered… Here’s your chance! I’m proud to present my review of “Tenacious D and Friends: Stand With Haiti”, presented in chronological order for all you fans of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder!

    Maya Rudolph: What’s funny is that I had just watched Ms. Rudolph’s infamous SNL “Nation Anthem” sketch mere hours before attending the show.

    What’s also funny is getting to see it in person. Maya took the stage as “Pamela Bell” and proceeded to sheepishly walk to the center, pick up her microphone, and – well, you all know how this one goes (If you don’t know how this one goes, watch the video above). It’s been a minute since I’ve seen Rudolph in anything (I think since IDIOCRACY, which was a few years back now) and seeing her on stage reminded me she really is one of the more talented women in the funny business. I look forward to seeing more of her in the future.

    Tig Notaro: Heading to the show, I had no clue if this was a comedian, a musician, a man, or a woman. I knew one thing – Tig is fun to say. Happy to report that Ms. Notaro is a) A Woman and b) A comedian… and a very funny one at that. Ms. Notaro admittedly looks a bit like she could be Mr. Notaro at first glance, and she talks about the consequences of such a misidentification. Witty, calm – Notaro has the poise and presence of an old hand at the comedy game, and her set was better then most “spotlights” I’ve seen on major TV networks in recent years. A really solid stand up set by someone who was previously unknown to me goes to show that comedy can come from anywhere, and to never overlook a “new” voice. Consider me a fan.

    Will Ferrell: The big surprise of the night. Without fanfare, without hype, without notice – Will Ferrell took the stage to what was probably the biggest applause of the event (other than The D). Ferrell quickly apologized to the audience, as he had “forgotten” the scheduling of the benefit and, as such, had arrived unprepared. He then proceeded to delight and confuse the crowd with the only “routine” he could remember off the top of his head – a third grade dance routine set to the synth classic “The Popcorn Song”, by Hot Butter. Cue two minutes of “Kaufmanesque” type performance art that made you smile more then it managed to illicit belly laughs. Ferrell was a welcome if not odd addition to an already stellar line-up of entertainers, and it was pretty cool to get to see one of my favorite on-screen comedians in the flesh (albeit 20 or so feet away).

    Frank Black: The frontman from the PIXIES (sometimes know as Black Francis) took to the stage for the evening’s first musical number, and I was fairly excited. I proudly put the PIXIES in my top ten all-time favorite bands, and I had not gotten the chance to see them or their illustrious leader (Miss you, Kim.) live. The set was not quite what I expected – picture a heavy, raw, oddly tempoed angry rockster – but was still quite enjoyable. I did get to hear “Where Is My Mind”, which brought up all kinds of FIGHT CLUB related memories. Definitely worth checking out, but I’d much rather hear the whole band (or what stands for the whole band at the current date and time).

    Bob Odenkirk: Out of the grand list of illustrious talent assembled, Mr. Odenkirk is my number one. Allow me to clarify. Yes, I am a huge Tenacious D fan, as I am one of Patton Oswalt, Aimee Man, Brand/Segal, etc. However, if the benefit had just been Bob Odenkirk talking to himself on a stage for an hour, I would not only have attended, but would have payed a lot of money to do so. In terms of “influences” in my life, Bob Odenkirk (and David Cross) are in the top quadrant. Without MR. SHOW in the world, I most likely would be an accountant somewhere, asking people around the office, “Hey, what’s this Twitter thing I keep hearing about?” Odenkirk emerged in a mustache and horn rimmed glasses as Steve Job’s lesser known but “better” brother. Odenkirk walked us through a presentation (complete with slides) of his newest inventions. Classic Odenkirk – weird but not zany character, tons of pop culture references (His partners in business? Clint Howard and Gordon Spielberg), and a concise and well paced sketch. One of the kings of comedy doing what he does very well. My only complaint was that Odenkirk was only on stage for about seven minutes. I could watch that man do comedy for days on end and beg for more.

    James Mercer: This was a benefit and all the artists were appearing out of the kindness of their hearts, so I would feel bad “maligning” anyone, but…. I don’t think I like the Shins. I had never heard of them or their frontman James Mercer before the night, and after hearing said dude perform a couple songs, I don’t think I’m missing much. Yeah, Mercer has a nice voice and can play guitar alright, but he’s so opposite my type of music. So mellow I almost fell asleep standing up. Mercer played about three acoustic songs and the ladies swooned. I had to hold on to a railing to stop from “slumbering off”. People seem to like him and the guy came out for a good cause and lent his time, so – right on. A Shins fan I suddenly am not, though.

    Nick Kroll and Ben Stiller: Oh, Fabrice Fabrice. I cannot get enough of this character. From the first time I saw Nick Kroll perform as Fabrice Fabrice, I’ve been hooked – bordering on obsessed. For those unfamiliar with the character, Fabrice Fabrice is a loud, obnoxious, ridiculously dressed “Head of Craft Services” who is of somewhat questionable sexuality. His “routine” consists of regaling the crowd with some of his stories from his many years spent in the fast track world that is feature film craft services. He oftentimes invites some of the celebrities he’s worked with in the past onto stage with him for an embarrassing and ridiculously offensive interview. Tonight’s guest: Mr. Ben Stiller. I don’t want to try and paraphrase an act that began with “What up you cock-ass bitches?!?” so I’ll leave the exact details to your imagination. However, the interview included references to Michael Jackson being a woman, Stiller’s inappropriate relationship with the monkey from NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, and an invitation of oral sex, “For Haiti”. It’s not often that one of Hollywood’s biggest comedians plays the straight man, but Stiller certainly filled that role during Kroll’s savage and ridiculously funny assessment of his career. Nick Kroll is funny with or without a rhinestone belt that says “Bing Bong”, and to see him share the stage with the likes of Ben Stiller was a thrill for someone who’s been following his career since its inauspicious starts at a basement theater in New York City. And Ben Stiller is a also person who ain’t that bad.

    Jason Segal: A musical interlude from the man who forgot Sarah Marshall. I’m sure you’ve all seen the film by now so you may know that Segal performs (and wrote) some original songs for the film, including a mini version of a Dracula musical entitled “A Taste For Blood”. All six plus feet of Segal took the stage to a warm welcome, though he looked a bit sad. Once seated at the keyboard he told the audience, “I’m bummed because my buddy was supposed to show up to help me tonight but he couldn’t make it”. Now, I know a bit when I see one, but I wasn’t sure just who exactly would be joining Segal on stage. Incidentally, Segal was joined by a guest on his first song of the evening – Jack Black came out to perform a duet of “Dracula’s Lament” in which Jables belted out some high notes to match Segal’s now-famous Dracula impression. Funny stuff. But, of course, this wasn’t the aforementioned buddy who had missed the show. We’d have to wait for Segal’s second number to find out who that was – and from the moment it started, it was kind of an easy guess. The opening notes of “Inside of You” rang out in the theatre, the first verse proceeded (with Segal doing a sort of fake Brand impersonation), and then the man of the hour took the stage – Russel Brand. The two joined for a spirited version of the Infant Sorrow classic and finished it all of with a uncomfortably long open mouthed kiss. Good stuff and a good reminder that GET HIM TO THE GREEK drops soon (At least it was for me).

    Patton Oswalt: I am a fan of stand up comedy, but I’m not a “stand-up guy”, per say. I’ve got my favorites, and I always try to keep up to date on their newest releases/routines – and Patton Oswalt is definitely included in that pack. I have listened to Patton’s albums dozens of times and had been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to catch a live show. This wonderful night did not fail me. Patton did a full half hour of brand new stand up (I’d never heard it before) and within a few minutes I was doubled over in hysterics, trying to stay afoot. Patton is so unassuming that when the insanity leaves his mouth it not only catches you off guard, but sort of wakes you up a bit. His presence on stage is so polar to the material he’s delivering, which is conscious and brilliant. If he was Dane Cook telling the same jokes, it wouldn’t work. There’s something so instantly likable (almost lovable) about Patton that his insights, while not always the most profound statements ever, are always familiar – which, of course, is one of the ingredients for good stand up. Relatability. Familiarity. Etc. If this set is any indication of where Patton’s taking his comedy (more family material, kid stuff, less geek-oriented material), I will purchase his newest release gladly, and I relish the day when I get to see him take to the stage again.

    Aimee Mann: Aimee Mann is one of my top 3 favorite solo artists, and it was a thrill and a pleasure to finally get to see her perform live (and one of the motivating factors in my attendance of the show). Ms. Mann took the stage with a skeleton crew – a bass player and a keyboardist – and began to rock the house in her own very unique and other-worldly way for a solid half hour or so. As far as female voices go, Aimee Mann’s is at the top of the heap, and her guitar skills match – to see it all live is to be caught up in a sort of rapture. Lots of talented folks in the house this evening but Aimee Mann – at least musically – is on an entire other level. I was first exposed to Aimee Mann with her work on the MAGNOLIA soundtrack (and within the film itself), and since then have been longing to catch her perform. Of all the tracks Mann and co. played during the show, my favorite has to be “Save Me”, from the MAGNOLIA soundtrack. Very different from my usual concert fare, but so damned talented and, dare I say, beautiful that I would definitely check out Aimee Mann live again in the future (And wouldn’t mind seeing her also very talented husband, Michael Penn, either).

    Russell Brand: By this point in the night, I thought that Tenacious D would take the stage for the finale, and I was quite content with that. Luckily, like always, I was wrong. “Rusty” took the stage like a pit bull takes to raw meat and delivered what is definitely the most energetic and frantic set of stand-up comedy (if you could really call it that – more like “observational philosophy) I’ve ever seen. Wordy is an understatement when one describes Brand’s stage set – It’s like studying for your SAT verbal section. Rather then being off-putting or excluding, Brand’s intellectual (and highly spiritual/sexual) bent differentiates him from ANY comic working today. Like all the bests, Brand uses the stage as a psychotherapy couch, and the cathartic rambling that spews henceforth from his waifish frame is a look into the mind of a very complex, very intelligent, very disturbed, and – luckily for the audience – very funny human being. Brand muses on all things from life, love, and the pursuit of “happiness” to more topical subjects as his recent stint as host of the MTV Movie Awards. A mile a minute, very funny, and oftentimes challenging, if you get a chance to see Mr. Brand take to a stage, I would definitely recommend jumping on the chance.

    Tenacious D: The men behind the entire evening. Respectively – Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Collectively – The D. I’ve had the pleasure of both meeting The D at a signing and seeing their PICK OF DESTINY TOUR when it hit Madison Square Garden, so I knew that some face-melting was about to occur. Since I heard the first licks of “Wonderboy” back in the 9th grade, I’ve been hooked on them. And not as a parody group or a comedy act, but rather as one of my favorite bands in the world, musically as well as ideologically. This very special set kicked off with the debut of a new song, chronicling the failure that was THE PICK OF DESTINY, and foretelling The D’s inevitable return to greatness. Pop songs, these are not. All the favorites were rolled out – “Tribute”, “Fuck Her Gently”, etc.) with a few songs I’d never heard thrown into the mix as well (including a very funny new tune called “The Roadie”). Look, you either love The D or you’ve never heard of them. It was a D show. Rocking and funny while at the same time melodic and impressive. Notable moments include Ben Stiller making a guest drum appearance on a cover of the GOOD TIMES theme, and Kyle quitting the band (as he always does). A fantastic finale to a truly remarkable night of laughs and music.

    And like that, it was over. One of the most entertaining nights I can remember in a long while, and all for a worthy purpose, as well. Sometimes, all is right with the world.     PATTON OSWALT – INTERVIEW

    Patton Oswalt wrote an excellent and impassioned thought piece about the recent WATCHMEN film and, in the same article, had a lot to say about the culture of geeks/nerds. He is one of us, if there is such a moniker that could somehow be conferred on to someone, and Patton has had the kind of career many other actors and performers only wish they could. On a stage, in front of the camera, behind a microphone in a recording booth Patton has conquered every medium put before him. Primarily known for his comedy and comedic strengths Patton took advantage of the opportunity to push that aside for his role as Paul Aufiero in Robert Siegel’s new film, BIG FAN, where he plays a deeply devoted New York Giants fan and is willing to call into a radio talk show on a regular basis to proudly extol the awesomeness of a football team who doesn’t even know he exists.

    The film is a mediation on the nature of fanaticism, to some extent, and it’s bold in how it challenges your preconceived notions about the kinds of parts Patton can play. BIG FAN shows how much range he has as a serious actor and hopefully it brings more people to the yard to hear what he has to say.

    The film recently debuted to critical and audience praise in both New York and California and it is rolling out to more theaters as the weeks go on. For a listing of where it might be playing near you see BIG FAN’s Now Playing page for more information.

    po3PATTON OSWALT: Hi Chris.

    CHRISTOPHER STIPP: Hi,Patton. How as press day been?

    OSWALT: Oh boy!

    CS: I’m going to try and avoid all the questions you’ve had to answer a million times.

    OSWALT: (Laughs)

    CS: I’m going to try really hard…This is how I’m going to lead it off. This movie is not the TAXI DRIVER everyone is comparing it to. I think it’s closer to KING OF COMEDY.

    OSWALT: Oh wow. Thank you. Good Lord. Thank you.

    CS: I think it’s precisely that. I shouldn’t say that people are ignoring that comparison but I think it’s appropriate because it shows how a person can just devolve into their own self and shut out the rest of the world to rational thinking.

    OSWALT: Well, Robert captured all that in the script and I just hope that I was up to the task of the script.

    CS: That was one of the funny things I found out about you that you were so self-aware about doing something like this and that RATATOUILLE liberated you from thinking that you could do it. How did you approach thinking that “That this is the script…I want to do it…”? I know he came to you with it, but what did you think when you got the script?

    big-fan-movie-poster-patton-oswaltOSWALT: It was the act of him coming to me to do the movie that gave me confidence that I could do it. He had written such a good script. He’s such a good writer. His instincts to be there for that meant a lot to me that he thought I could pull this off. It just gave me confidence.

    CS: Robert was saying that some people saw it as a comedy but you saw something else in this story. What else did you see in this story?

    OSWALT: I don’t think he ever saw it as a comedy.

    CS: No, but some other people did.

    OSWALT: Oh yeah. I think what I saw in this story was kind of a guy that maybe we glance at once and move along from. And he was like, “Wait a minute. What’s that guy’s story.” I love that someone can look at a part of the world that we tend to, not so much but we don’t have to explore any deeper. And Robert says, “Well, what is there?” So that to me that we would delve into something that might not be there was very exciting.

    CS: When you were getting ready to do this, at what point did Kevin Corrigan come into it as your sort of partner in crime? He does an amazing job.

    OSWALT: I think he was booked right along with me. He and I signed on at the same time, so right from the get-go, there he was. It worked out perfectly.

    CS: The movie’s theme. I think it’s rather poignant the idea of obsession, of a guy who is living in his own mind. When you see the film now completed as it is, did it capture everything that you saw on the page?

    OSWALT: Yes. And I think they found even more stuff that wasn’t on the page. Michael Simmonds, the cinematographer who paid attention to Staten Island and shot all these amazing angles, just a different way of looking at it. I think they got everything they wanted and more.

    CS: Did everything on the page come out of it? You hear a lot these days of people doing what they want, improvising, having minimal guidance…

    OSWALT: I’m not a big fan of that. I like the script to be as good as it can from the get go.

    CS: And hard was it for you to come up with the persona of the radio call-in kind of guy?

    OSWALT: It wasn’t really that hard. It was hard to suppress, because of my insecurities, my wanting to bring in the comedy. That was the hardest thing to begin with and then I was just able to fall into it easier than I thought I would. It was exciting.

    poCS: What kind of insecurities? You’ve got, not to put you over, but as I was getting prepared I didn’t realize how rich of a resume you now have.

    OSWALT: Most of my comedy comes from those insecurities. Comedy is what I turn to to be comfortable and to give that up for a whole movie was very unnerving at first.

    CS: Can you explain how gritty ““ the way Darren shot THE WRESTLER ““ did Robert explain the way he wanted to shot it, sort of 70’s, sort of gritty, cinema style?

    OSWALT: We had talked about these kinds of movies and how much we loved that period of film making. Especially at that time of year, being grey and overcast, they captured it perfectly.

    CS: They did. Especially the parking lot scene at the beginning. It looks like it’s fucking cold out there.

    OSWALT: It was. It was fucking freezing.

    CS: It captures ““ no Hollywood glossiness, let’s put you in a warm trailer and kick your ass out and then put you back in.

    OSWALT: There were no trailers.

    CS: That was my next question about the production of the film. How does it compare ““ well, it doesn’t compare, Rob said he wanted to do this one way or another? How was the production life?

    OSWALT: We didn’t have any facilities. We had to borrow locations and change in the back of vans. No dressing rooms. Waited in cars between shots. There was nothing.

    CS: Really? How long was the shoot?

    OSWALT: 23 days.

    CS: 23 days? Oh my god. Was there any concern that this film ““ it didn’t have distribution before it was shot? It was a wing and a prayer that it was going to get made and get picked up?

    po2OSWALT: Exactly. We had no idea. We didn’t know if we would have money to complete it let alone get distribution. I looked at it like this was just something I wanted to do for myself. The rest was secondary.

    CS: That blows my mind. Not a lot of people would stick their neck out and say, you weren’t wasting anything but you were going to give up those days just to do this movie that you believed in. Do you find that there is a lot of that sort of passion for films out nowadays like that?

    OSWALT: Well, that passion is there but it’s hard to find those movies because a lot of those kinds of movies don’t get the distribution they deserve. They don’t get the attention they deserve. It’s out there. You just have to search for it. There is all kinds of passion, both as an actor and as a movie buff.

    CS: Do you get those kinds of scripts? I know Robert had you in mind to do this but do you get scripts like this often?

    OSWALT: No, I don’t. This was a gift from out of nowhere. It was great.

    CS: When you do take a project, what is your criteria? Does it have to move you?

    OSWALT: I don’t want to make a lot of money or have a lot of fun and do something interesting. I work for the antidotes. To me I can either work on a great film or work on a movie that could be a disaster they are equally exciting to me. I just want a lot of experiences which is what I would be happy with at the end of my life.

    CS: When you do films and you are doing a film like this when you can’t go to your comedic crutch, is that hard to suppress? Was it hard to just do it as you are supposed to?

    OSWALT: Initially, yes. It was hard to bite down on that instinct but after a while it came natural which shows how good the script was.

    I am a big girl.

    I barely have a grasp on the latest happenings with the Chicago Cubs and, even then, I am about as sure in the things I talk about as Bernie Madoff is about how many smokes a day it’ll take to keep his cellmate at bay. I’m a disgrace to my gender and no one needs to remind me more than the real men I have lunch with on a daily basis who turn sports talk into a art, weaving statistics, opinions and Monday morning quarterbacking into something that I cannot ever hope to comprehend. I am missing that gene. Leave it to Scott Ferrall, the high octane motormouth on Sirius Satellite Radio, who has a nightly sports talk radio show that helps deficient, causal sports fans and die-hards alike make sense of the world of sports. It’s explosive, fun and the aspersions that are cast at sports players, teams and fans of those teams are enough to make you wonder what some of these callers into the program are like once the bread and circuses are over for the night.

    BIG FAN by Robert Siegel, writer of last year’s Academy Award nominated film THE WRESTLER, does just that. It explores the life of one such fan, Paul Aufiero (Patton Oswalt), who is a regular caller into a sports talk show program, Scotty Ferrall playing a vocal part in the film as an irascible sports talk show host and who welcomes Paul’s passionate and insulting musings, and follows him after the radio turns off. The film is a delicate portrait into the mind of a man who loves his team so much he builds his sense of self and identity around it. When things happen that threaten to derail that passion the film only gets better and it is, again, a quiet exploration of adoration and what it can do. I had the chance to talk to Robert Siegel a couple of weeks ago and here’s the result.

    BIG FAN is now playing and is expanding to more theaters this fall.

And it seems to be a real hit with those that have come in contact with it and I wanted to start off by talking about how close the grittiness feel the way the film looks like THE WRESTLER. It has that, I don’t want to say, dirty quality, but it’s so close to reality. Can you talk about that?

    ROBERT SIEGEL: Sure. That’s the style I like best when I watch a movie. I don’t like things to feel Hollywood slick and unrealistic. So that was definitely deliberate. I think of the two movies, I think they could exist in the same universe almost as if they could both be happening at the same time in different parts of town. I sent one camera crew out to a wrestling ring in New Jersey to follow Randy the Ram and meanwhile over to Stanton Island to follow Paul Aufiero do his thing. But, that kind of vibe is what I’m into most.

    Everything in both movies is shot on location. We used real people. A mix of professionals and non-professionals. We used real rooms. The room that was Paul Aufiero’s room was actually a real guy’s room and most of the stuff on the wall is the guy’s stuff. His stack of CD’s and the piles of old lottery tickets and the clippings on the wall, it feels like a very real, lived in room with that kind of detail. I find it hard to take when movies and on TV when the room is fake. You can tell if it’s just art direction and when it’s just real. It’s hard to fake the accumulation of crap that a room will accumulate in the course of a real person’s life.

    CS: I have to say it was a real master stroke that Patton does as well as he does and I would never have figured him to be such an arresting actor as he does with this film and I’m curious, from your perspective, and obviously you are the guy who took this from idea to film: a) what did you see in Patton that made you think that this guy was perfect for it and b) the idea for this film and where it came from. Throughout…I was reminded a little bit of KING OF COMEDY.

    SIEGEL: Definitely. One of the movies that it is compared to. Well, on your first question for starters I wanted somebody who looked right. I had a very clear idea in my head. When you write a character you picture that character and I pictured him roughly looking like Patton Oswalt. I wasn’t writing it with Patton specifically in mind. I actually wrote it years ago. Years before I ever thought of Patton in the role. I knew I didn’t want to cast just some generic good looking Hollywood actor who I would then ask to gain 7 pounds for the role and then mess up his hair a little bit. And then viola. Or pick somebody who’s maybe not George Clooney but certainly not a real regular guy. I didn’t want to go that kind of route. I didn’t set out to cast a dramatic actor per se or comedian. I feel sometimes that comedians are cast in dramatic roles, it’s almost more stunt casting. It just so happened that he was a comedian and if anything I felt understood psychology of a guy like Patton.

    090112_siegelsecondaryI don’t know if you are a fan of his stand up. He’s not a sports fan but understands the psychology of obsession. There’s not that big a difference is what the Giants did on 4th and goal vs. ranting about the comic book equivalent. From what I can tell Patton is a big comic book-phile, not a sports guy. I didn’t have him read for the part. I just hired him. It was something of a leap of faith. He’s such an intelligent guy. When I first met with him we had a long conversation about 70’s movies and people have different reactions to the script and people read it and think it’s a comedy. And it could have been.

    I could have taken the same set of problems and turned it into a comedy but. And some people see the movie and think it’s a comedy. I know there are character studies that is a comedy and has drama in it. I think he got that. The type of movie ““ like KING OF COMEDY and a some of Scorcesse’s and Robert Altman.

    [Robert is called away for a moment]

    SIEGEL: Where were we?

    CS: We were talking about the influences of the film of where you sensibility came into making the film. Could you speak a little bit about the way you wanted to carry the tone of the film?

    SIEGEL: I wanted it to be dramatic and I wanted it to be funny. I think in real life ““ most drama doesn’t contain much humor ““ so I came to it as a movie buff and tried to incorporate both. As an example, something like GOODFELLAS, a very funny movie, but very real. BOOGIE NIGHTS is another one of my favorite movies. THERE WILL BE BLOOD in a weird way is another very funny movie. I like things that feel like they exist in the real world. Pretty and real but also really funny and earthy. So, a lot of that stuff happened in the 70’s and I’m definitely a 70’s guy. I’m a Robert Altman fan. I like stuff that is quirky but has entertainment value. I don’t like art films. I’m not a big Montriere fan.

    CS: We’ve got two to compare. We have THE WRESTLER and now BIG FAN. It seems you want to base these movies in an actual universe where it’s not fantastical.

    SIEGEL: I don’t think I could write one of those movies. I would if I could but I don’t think I’d be good at it.

    CS: One of the questions I had for you was that, your work on The Onion was just wacky, off the wall sort of satirical. How has that informed your work now?

    SIEGEL: It’s wacky but it’s also very observational. Most of it’s rooted in real world observation. Not to be pretentious but a lot is rooted in observations in the psychology in human nature, little tiny life observations. It’s also kind of similar when you look at The Onion and say how did The Onion guy write THE WRESTLER or BIG FAN? I think The Onion is a mix of comedy and tragedy. A lot of The Onion has an undercurrent of depressing ““ it was comedy with a sub-text of tragedy. I think the stuff I’m doing now more tragedy with a sub-text of comedy. That’s really a question of the ratio. Maybe one is 80% funny and 20% sad and now I’m doing stuff that 80% sad and 20% funny. But The Onion to me was always a mix. A mix of real life.

    CS: And I have to commend your use of Scotty Ferrall ““ I’m a big fan of his. It’s part of the way you sort of launched Patton’s character ““ the guy who would be one of those guys who would call into a show like that. Did it all germinate from that idea of these guys who are so fanatical about sports teams in general? Or did it always start out this way?

    Sports radio is where the movie starts. Listening to sports radio, I used to listen to WFAN religiously and I still listen to sports radio but not religiously as I did back then and when you listen to it you hear these callers and you got to know them because they would call every night. And then you couldn’t help but wonder what their lives were like and where they were living. Most of those guys were the guys that populated the movies that I loved. The guys you would hear, Murray from Regal Park, or Joe from Flushing, calling on the FAN. Probably the kind of guys that wouldn’t hang out in the bar on Mean Street. They are just regular guys from outer burrow New York. So the movie is definitely a fusion of my level of listening to the radio, listening to sports radio but also these kinds of character studies that I got into when I was probably a teen-ager. It’s definitely a personal movie for me.

    CS: And the fanaticism that is instilled in these guys, I don’t want to say frightening, I respect it on one hand, I’m a huge Cubs fan but I know that there are people out there that are really into it. Is that something you wanted to do ““ delve into the pathos of the people who really devote their minutes to obsessing over these things that don’t love them back?

    SIEGEL: Yes. I’m interested in obsession and fanaticism for whatever reason it’s a really compelling theme and subject for me. On the original poster I made for Big Fan there was a tag line, it said Big Fan ““ a tale of unrequited love – which is kind of how I also see the movie, as a love story between Paul and the team. Paul’s kind of a jilted lover and the team ““ what do you do when the thing you love most doesn’t love you back? Maybe it’s just my version of FATAL ATTRACTION.

    (Laughs)

    I don’t know. It’s just an interesting theme for me. Hopefully I’ll think of something else next time. But people that are passionate I think are more interesting that people that are not passionate.

    CS: I know our time is short but I would like to ask you a technical question about you now taking the reigns as director. You got to work with, and with no hyperbole, one of the best directors of our time, and was rewarded handsomely with the love that THE WRESTLER got. What did you take away from that set going forward in your own career?

    SIEGEL: I definitely admire and respect the way Darren stuck to his guns in casting Mickey.

    It was an inspiring thing to witness. Nobody wanted to make the movie with Mickey Rourke and he was just the biggest liability. He just could not get funding with Mickey Rourke. They said if you want to make this movie with Nick Cage, we’ll give you 5 times as much money. But Darren held fast and said no. The only person who is going to make this movie work is Mickey.

    And he was absolutely right. I took that lesson to heart. And I think in a way of casting Patton, I definitely had to do some thinking about that. Just make the movie really good. Don’t get caught up in getting a big star. It just makes it uncompromising. So, I knew if I just made a good movie the rest will take care of itself and be a bigger movie in the end. But if you put a bigger actor in there, you’d have just a so-so movie.

    Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of sci-fi (or Dick Tracy, or The Venture Bros.) surely must have dreamed of the day that mankind would finally develop the technology needed to realize the video watch. That’s right – the ability to watch incredibly sharp video on your wrist. And view pictures. And listen to MP3s. Well, the dream has been realized with the Stainless Steel Video Watch ($129.99).     Though my favorite Billy Joel album remains the severely underrated Turnstiles (I spent an entire summer with a friend tooling around in his VW bug listening to “Summer, Highland Falls”), a close runner-up would be the album that saved Joel from being dumped by his label, and cemented him as an artist to be reckoned with – 1977’s The Stranger. In (belated) celebration of the album’s anniversary, we get the fully remastered 2-disc The Stranger: 30th Anniversary Edition (Sony Legacy, $49.98 SRP), featuring not only the original album, but also a never-before released live recording of Billy’s Carnegie Hall performance on June 3, 1977. As an extra bonus, the set also includes a bonus DVD featuring a newly-produced making-of documentary, original promotional films, and Billy’s 1978 concert for Britain’s Old Grey Whistle Test. Hopefully the rest of his early albums get the same kind of revisiting.

    And while we’re on the topic of expanded revistings, I must mention the new deluxe editions of both the eponymous Elton John and my favorite Elton album, the country rock Tumbleweed Connection (Universal/Rocket, $29.98 SRP each). Both discs feature glittering remasters, but the real treat is the bonus discs, which contain rare demo tracks and period live performances. With these two sets and the previously released Captain Fantastic and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, all we’ve got left is Empty Sky, Madmen Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Rock Of The Westies, and Caribou to complete the classic, must-have Elton set, before his music morphed into pappy, forgettable shit in the 80’s and 90’s. Where are you, 70’s Elton? Come back from wherever you went.

    Just when the summer doldrums were beginning to set in, I found out just why everyone has been fawning over Mad Men (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) – the AMC series about Madison Avenue ad execs in the early 60’s. The reason why everyone has flocked to it? Because it’s one hell of a great show. Check out the first season for yourself. The 4-disc set features all 13 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, and more. The first season is also available on Blu-Ray ($49.99 SRP), with identical bonus features.

    While we still can’t the series itself on DVD, at least we can watch the camp glory that is the Adam West Batman: The Movie (Fox, Rated PG, Blu-Ray DVD-$39.98 SRP) in full-blown high definition Blu-Ray. The disc features the same bonus features as the standard DVD, including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more.

    Even 20 years later, Heathers (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$19.97 SRP) holds up as a painfully funny snapshot of the awkward, cutthroat nature of high school. The new 20th anniversary edition of the film features a brand new transfer, but double dips from previous editions on an audio commentary, a retrospective featurette, a screenplay excerpt of the original ending, and the theatrical trailer. It does, however, feature one new retrospective featurette, “Return to Westerberg High”.

    Any flick that’s smart enough to cast both Patton Oswalt and Mindy Cohn is – at the very least – worth a viewing. Written and directed by Daniel Waters (the writer of Heathers), Sex And Death 101 (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$29.97 SRP) is one of those pleasant surprise on home video discoveries that you wind up enjoying. It stars Simon Baker as a man who receives a mysterious e-mail that details everyone he’s had sex with – and everyone he’ll have sex with in the future. Unfortunately, it’s uncertain if his list ends in commitment – or something far worse, as there’s an equally mysterious femme fatale on the loose (Winona Ryder) that’s targeting men guilty of sex crimes against women. Bonus features include an audio commentary, a featurette, and a trailer. A Blu-Ray edition is also available (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP), featuring identical bonus materials to the standard edition.

    From the director of the upcoming Pineapple Express comes a smart, gritty little indie flick about an escalating blood feud amongst a group of half brothers in the Arkansas back roads. In Shotgun Stories (Genius, Rated R, DVD-$24.95 SRP), the two sets of siblings – who knew different versions of their father, one a violent drunk and one a sober, middle-class man – come crashing together at their father’s funeral. The DVD features an audio commentary, an isolated score track, trailers, and more.

    To be honest with you, the only reason I ever watched Evening Shade (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) was for the presence of the ever-delightful Charles Durning. Sure, the rest of the cast – Burt Reynolds, Marilu Henner, Michael Jeter, Hal Holbrook, and Ossie Davis – was enjoyable, but I was there for Durning. The 5-disc set features all 24 first season episodes, but not a single commentary, featurette, or interview with Durning. Damn.

    If you’re in a pinch and need an entirely watchable, inoffensive romantic comedy to fill out a date with, look no further than Definitely, Maybe (Universal, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.98 SRP). The cast alone – including Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Banks, and Rachel Weisz – makes it an interesting proposition, and the story about a father trying to explain to his daughter about the past loves of his life prior to her mother is a nicely awkward premise.

    It’s certainly not a comedy classic, but there’s a goofy, almost 80’s quality about Drillbit Taylor (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$34.99 SRP), which stars Owen Wilson as a slacker fists-for-hire who’s contracted by a trio of nerdy high schoolers to act as their on campus bodyguard. Its 80’s-like quality is probably due to the fact that it’s based on an idea by John Hughes, even though the script was brought to life by Seth Rogen and Kristofor Brown. The unrated DVD features additional footage, an audio commentary, deleted/extended scenes, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Also available in Blu-Ray ($39.99 SRP).

    I’m sure you’re just as shocked as I am that Walker, Texas Ranger (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP) made it to a fifth season. I guess there’s no discounting the durability of ludicrously goofy shows that take themselves far more seriously than the acting and writing permits. Anyway, here’s another 25 episodes sure to delight anyone with a penchant for unintended comedy.

    If you’ve been missing the true-crime stories with a sly presentation that was City Confidential, then you want to check out the marriages gone sour stories recounted in Till Death Do Us Part (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$35.99 SRP). They key to enjoying the show is the witty, tongue-in-cheek presence of host John Waters. Yes, that John Waters. The 3-disc set features all 13 episodes, plus new introductions from waters and interviews.

    Kyra Sedgwick is back as homicide investigator Brenda Johnson in the 3rd season of Closer (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), facing down the return of a dormant serial killer, a missing child, and the mysterious death of a Homeland Security official. The 4-disc set features all 14 episodes, plus unaired scenes, a featurette, and a gag reel.

    Karl Malden and Michael Douglas are back on The Streets Of San Francisco (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) with the first volume of the second season. The 3 disc set features 11 episodes detailing the exploits of Lt. Mike Stone and Inspector Steve Keller as they face down convicts, robbers, and even an assassin. Yes. An assassin.
