    Last year, Sideshow made quite the splash with their absolutely incredible 1/6-scale R2-D2, from accurate detailing and a ridiculous amount of accessories right down to its impressive lighting effects. The only downside, however, has been the tortuously long wait for his persnickety companion. But that wait is now over. And was it worth it? Yes. Yes. A thousand times YES. The 1/6-scale C-3PO ($229.99) is, if not perfect, pretty damn near to perfect. The sculpt and paint job are spot-on to his appearance in A New Hope, including the forehead dent from the Tusken Raider attack (the Sideshow exclusive version include a swappable bonus arm stump from that tussle’s aftermath). He’s fully articulated right down to his fingers, and even the hydraulics on his arms slide. Best of all, though, is the light feature for his eyes, which is activated via a touch sensor on the back of his head. So yes, this IS the droid you’re looking for.

    Waffles. Who doesn’t love waffles. And Star Wars. Everybody loves waffles and Star Wars. So, how can you possibly resist a Star Wars Death Star Waffle Maker ($39.99), that allows you to cook up a delicious treat that looks exactly like the Empire’s ultimate weapon? That’s right. You can not hope to resist its awesome power. Don’t resist it. Give in to the dark side of the waffle.

    It seems I’ve been waiting ages for it to get its turn, but the new high definition edition of Charlie Chaplin’s classic The Kid (Criterion, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) is well worth the wait, as they’ve done a fabulous restoration job. The film truly has never looked better. Bonus features include an audio commentary, a video essay on Jackie Coogan, interviews, deleted scenes, newsreels, rare footage, and much more.

    It was an odd, almost exquisite chore to sit through Danny Boyle & Aaron Sorkin’s meditation on the exhaustingly complicated Steve Jobs (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), as you can certainly appreciate what he was able to accomplish, but you also get a better sense of just what an awful human being he was, in many ways, which makes this less a celebration than a condemnation, albeit with great appreciation for his accomplishments. Bonus materials include audio commentaries and a featurette.

    While Johnny Depp’s performance as notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is pretty darn powerful, it’s difficult to get past the almost cartoonish make-up job that he’s been given, which gives the film an unintentional gonzo air. Which is a shame, really, because it’s an otherwise solid piece about Bulger’s manipulation of the FBI to rid himself of the Italian mob. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes, including one about the manhunt that led to fugitive Bulger’s eventual capture.

    Take a trip down the mine and relive the harrowing true tale of the 33 Chilean miners trapped for 69 days far underground in The 33 (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), with a fine cast of largely unknowns led by Antonio Banderas. Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes and the theatrical trailer.

    Olive films continues their fine tradition of releasing high definition titles from deep, deep catalogue with the Blu-Ray debut of the totally 80s Beat Street (Olive Films, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$29.95 SRP), the romantic drama Moonlight And Valentino (Olive Films, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$29.95 SRP), and Nic Cage & Samuel L. Jackson in Amos & Andrew (Olive Films, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.95 SRP).

    That’s it. The vaults are empty. The barrels have been scraped. It’s the Poppocalypse. We now have The Brady Kids: The Complete Animated Series (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP) on DVD. With its dancing pandas. The 3-disc set contains all 22 episodes.

    I’m sure I’m not the only Turtle fan baffled that we have yet to see a Blu-Ray release of the show’s first season, but Nick is pretty clockwork with their single-disc releases, the latest of which is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Good, The Bad, And Casey Jones (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP), which sports six season 2 episodes including the introduction of the titular teen titan. The disc also contains 6 bonus shorts plus a featurette.

    Last year, Sideshow released a wonderful premium format statue of Batman’s nemesis, the Clown Prince of Crime himself, The Joker. As stunning as that piece was, it made the wait for his companion that much harder. Why? Because Sideshow’s premium format take on Harley Quinn ($359.99) is pretty darn great, capturing the classic look of Paul Dini’s lovestruck psychotic creation perfectly. If you haven’t snagged your own Harley yet, what are you waitin’ for?

    In the pre-Star Wars days of 1975, director Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted to realize a ridiculously ambitious and deeply heady feature-film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic Dune, featuring the music of Pink Floyd and designed by the likes of H.R. Giger and Moebius. And it all fell apart in spectacular fashion. Now, the tale of this aborted film is presented in the brilliant documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune (Sony, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$40.99 SRP), and it’s well worth a watch. Also be sure to watch all of the deleted scenes, which provide additional insight and color to an already trippy experience.

    The banality of evil is certainly present in the smirking, small town bank president face of Donald Rumsfeld as he glibly defends his awful legacy in Errol Morris’s grimly compelling documentary The Unknown Known (Anchor Bay, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP). Bonus materials include an audio commentary, a four-part op-ed, and the 3rd Report of the Secretaries of Defense from 1989.

    It’s still not the equal of the beautifully executed Avatar, but there’s still plenty to recommend as its follow-up finds firm footing in The Legend Of Korra: Book Two – Spirits (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$35.98 SRP), which throws viewers into the future of the Avatar spirit which now exists within the titular teenage girl. Bonus materials include audio commentaries, featurettes, and animatics.

    New to high-def, there’s an old school charm to 1959’s Operation Petticoat (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$29.95 SRP), a Blake Edwards-directed naval comedy starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis as skipper and junior officer of the underdog submarine U.S.S. Sea Tiger, whose premature wartime ship out to sea is righted by the addition of a group of stranded Army nurses.

    It’s an overly-lavish spectacle that certainly befits its Vegas venue, but there’s no denying that Elton John: The Million Dollar Piano (Eagle Rock, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$19.98 SRP) features a Captain Fantastic that still knows how to belt out his decades of hits in spectacular fashion. Bonus materials include a making-of featurette and a bonus trio of performances recorded in Kiev.

    Johnny Depp’s string of cinematic bad luck continues with the unfortunately inert sci-fi thriller Transcendence (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), in which Depp plays scientist working to create a sentient machine that combines intelligence and emotion, who is forced to become his own guinea pig in order to save his work from anti-technology extremists. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes and viral videos.

    The folks at Mill Creek should make a lot of guilty pleasure-seekers happy with their latest batch of Sony catalogue high definition releases, which brings to Blu The Legend Of Billy Jean (Mill Creek, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP), Flatliners (Mill Creek, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP), Anaconda (Mill Creek, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP), Donnie Brasco (Mill Creek, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP), Gridiron Gang (Mill Creek, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP), and Last Action Hero (Mill Creek, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$9.98 SRP).

    Nickelodeon has a nifty little batch of releases sure to fill those seemingly endless summer days for the kids in your life, starting with a pair of releases from an old favorite – Rugrats: Outdoor Shenanigans & Rugrats: Reptar Returns (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP each). Bu that’s not all! They’ve also got a pair of triple-threat releases, each featuring episodes from a trio of their most popular shows – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spongebob, and Sanjay & CraigHeroes In Action & Robot Invasion (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP each).

    Far from an “Oh” face, much of Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Volume I and Volume II (Magnolia, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) will leave you with an “Ew” face, as we get a rather disturbing portrait of an emotionally and physically abused young woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her journey of self-discovery. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes.

    When one of your chief blurbs comes from Telemundo, you know you’re in for a mindless bit of action fluff, and that’s exactly what the Arnold Schwarzenegger pic Sabotage (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), as the iron not-so-giant stars as a DEA agent rooting out a criminal element within his team. Bonus materials include a featurette and deleted scenes.

    Michael McKean channels a bit of his Spinal Tap alter ego as a famous rocker helped in his search for a new band by Elmo and Abby in Sesame Street: Learning Rocks (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP), and that bit of niftiness is plussed when the one and only Donald Glover also makes a trip to the Street.

    Bad is irrevocably broken in the 5th and final season of Breaking Bad (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$55.99 SRP), which manages to wrap things up in that all-to-rare occurrence – a satisfying ending, bringing the tragic tale of Walter White to a most fitting conclusion.     Try a touch of blacker than black comedy with a Ben Wheatley double feature of both Sightseers (IFC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) and A Field In England (Channel 4, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-£9.75 SRP), both of which are quirky little independent films that lose a bit of their impact if I try to explain them, so let’s just skip that and you go ahead and watch them.

    Let the legendary singing cowboy croon you back to a simpler, singier time with the complete run of The Gene Autry Show (Flying A Pictures, Not Rated, DVD-$79.99 SRP). The 15-disc set contains all 91 episodes of Autry’s 1950-1955 series, plus a bonus disc containing 10 episodes from Autry’s Flying A Pictures Westerns.

    The sequel is hitting theaters, so it should come as little surprise that a special edition of the original Anchorman (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$26.98 SRP) is now available, featuring all of the bonus materials from the original DVD special edition – including commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and bloopers – but also the alternate Wake Up, Ron Burgundy version of the film.

    In the mood for a thriller this weekend? How about one starring Hugh Jackman as a father whose daughter goes missing – and the only suspect of an investigation by a local detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) is released due to lack of evidence, leaving the distraught father with few options. That’s exactly the thriller you get with Prisoners (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP). Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes.

    And speaking of Hugh Jackman, you can also fill your weekend with his latest turn as Marvel’s feral mutant in The Wolverine (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which manages the incredible easy feat of being a far sight better than the first Wolverine solo film even if it’s still on shaky ground. Bonus materials include featurettes and an alternate ending.

    It’s sad to see the seventh and final season of Burn Notice (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), if only because it means we’ve now entered another period when Bruce Campbell is off our TV screens. Here’s hoping that’s rectified. Quickly. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurette, and a gag reel.

    Still rolling along, though, is the animated misadventures of the Griffin clan with Family Guy: Volume Twelve (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), featuring 22 uncensored episodes plus audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and a table read for the included 200th episode.

    If Jackass were given a point system, you’d get Impractical Jokers (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) – a reality series about a group of friends who challenge each other to do incredibly foolish things in public. Really, really foolish things. Bonus features include audio commentaries and more.

    If you watched the latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise and walked away wishing it contained even more cars and action and cars and stuff, then you’ll want to snap up the Fast & Furious 6: Extended Edition (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), which lengthens the film with just that. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and more.

    I’m really not sure what to make of Gore Verbinski’s big screen take on The Lone Ranger (Walt Disney, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), and I’m not terribly sure Gore Verbinski knew, either, as it’s a very erratic affair that goes from high adventure to bafflingly somber tragedy in often incomprehensible ways. Which is a shame, because Armie Hammer has the makings of a great Lone Ranger, and Johnny Depp… Well, Johnny Depp, as usual, is in a film all his own. Bonus materials include featurettes, a deleted scene, and bloopers.

    As I was with the first film, I am shocked to say that I found The Smurfs 2 (Sony, Rated PG, 3D Blu-Ray-$55.99 SRP) an entirely watchable film. And as with the first outing, the least watchable parts of it were any time it was mired in the real world, with Neil Patrick Harris (no slight to him). I still would much rather have seen a film entirely in the medieval world around Smurf village, with Hank Azaria’s Gargamel. Truly. Bonus materials include featurettes and deleted scenes.

    An Angry Birds cartoon? Sure. Why not. And honestly, the 90+ minutes of Angry Birds Toons (Sony, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$26.99 SRP) found on their debut release are actually pretty enjoyable, and will certainly appeal to fans of the franchise. And they look gorgeous… Bu8t that’s what having a ton of money to spend will get you.

    It’s no Tango & Cash, but what Pain & Gain (Paramount, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) – starring Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, & Anthony Mackie as a trio of personal trainers get caught up on the wrong side of the law – manages to remind viewers is that director Michael Bay used to know how to make fun, funny action films that weren’t senseless bastardizations of licensed properties. The new Special Collector’s Edition adds nearly an hour of bonus features.

    It’s the sheer ridiculousness that makes the celebration of The History of WWE: 50 Years Of Sports Entertainment (WWE, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) such a fun and fascinating journey down memory lane, from its earliest regional origins to the current global phenomena, and all of the larger-than-life personalities that made the explosion possible.

    It seems like forever since the last season was released, but the holidays bring the arrival of The Simpsons: The Sixteenth Season (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$59.99 SRP). No matter what you think of the quality of the 21 episodes contained in the set compared to the show’s golden age, the real draw of these sets continues to be the excellent, often freewheeling audio commentaries. Bonus materials also include featurettes, bonus episodes, sketches, and more.

    As a follow-up to the equally stunning Planet Earth, the BBC’s Life (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) is just as incredible in regards to the footage they were able to capture of the animals that populate this planet of ours. My only regret is that Americans are stuck with the crappy Oprah Winfrey narration, while the Brits get the far superior Sir David Attenborough.. Or so it was on TV. Thankfully, you get to choose what home video version you want. The 4-disc set contains behind-the-scenes video diaries, deleted scenes, and a music-only viewing option. A Blu-Ray edition ($69.99 SRP) is available with identical bonus materials, but a far, far superior picture.

    So you want a stapler, hole punch, one meter ruler, precision scissors, ballpoint pen, screwdrivers (+/-), screwdriver socket, staple remover, and storage space for paper clips, all in container the size of a deck of cards? Well, the Tool Logic Office Assistant ($9.99) is the answer to the dream you never even knew you had, because it’s all in there. All of it.

    I was worried that something would come along and derail Sony’s release of the complete theatrical shorts, but with The Three Stooges Collection: Volume Eight 1955-1959 (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$24.96 SRP), fans now have them all. This last set contains not only Shemp’s final shorts, but also the ones using the fake Shemp (where a stand-in and old footage allowed them to crank a few more Shemps out) and infamous Stooge replacement Joe Besser (famed for not wanting to be hit). Thank you, Sony, for getting them all out there.

    If you’re beginning to jones for more Rifftrax shorts DVDs, you can get your fix from not one, but two new releases – Rifftrax Plays With Their Shorts & Shorts-A-Poppin’ (Legend Films, Not Rated, DVD-$9.95 each). Both discs feature 9 brand new shorts apiece, though by the time you reach the end, you’ll be counting the days until the next release.

    There was a time when a Tim Burton film meant a fair deal of whimsy with a surprisingly strong core of emotion at its center. Alice In Wonderland (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$44.99 SRP) is just a mess – as if Burton were simply hurling fistfuls of whimsy at you, all sound and fury. Nothing really hangs together as a narrative, and seems more like a superficial theme park ride of a flick. Sad, really. The 3-disc set contains over a dozen featurettes on the characters and behind-the-scenes, plus the always-welcome standard DVD as well.

    Not only do you get the much desired original in high definition, but The Magnificent Seven Collection (MGM/UA, Not Rated/Rated G/Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$69.98 SRP) also contains the sequels Return Of The Magnificent Seven, Guns Of The Magnificent Seven, and The Magnificent Seven Ride!. The first film is loaded with an audio commentary, featurettes, trailers, and a still gallery.

    Originally available as part of last year’s big Clint Eastwood box set, you can now get the Richard Schickel produced documentary The Eastwood Factor (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP) all on its own. The documentary is a retrospective of Eastwood’s 35-year history at Warners. Think of it as a personal trip down memory lane, at his work both in front of and behind the camera.

    They’re not quite up to the same snuff as the classic specials of the 60’s, but there’s still plenty of fun in the Peanuts: 1970’s Collection Volume 2 (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which contains Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, You’re A Good Sport, Charlie Brown, It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown, What A Nightmare, Charlie Brown, It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown, and You’re The Greatest, Charlie Brown. The 2-disc set also contains a retrospective featurette.

    Oh, History Channel – you’re not even bothering to do anything to do with hard history even more. You’ve become MTV, eager to throw up the next reality series, which you have with the garbage combers of American Pickers (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP). The 3-disc first season set contains all 12 episodes.

    Fans jonesing for a hit of Meatwad, Frylock, and Master Shake can get their fix from Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 7 (Cartoon Network, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which sports 11 episodes plus behind-the-scenes featurettes, Terror Phone II, and a featurette on the live action Carl.

    I really hoped you would be able to pull it off, Joe Johnston. I mean, you had Benicio Del Toro as your lead, and a strong mythology behind it, but your new take on The Wolfman (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) is just dull. You made a werewolf pic that just bored me to tears. It’s not bad. It’s not good. It just exists. Bonus materials include a pair of alternate endings, deleted/extended scenes, and featurettes.

    When a shallow size zero supermodel dies in an accident and finds herself given the body of the recently-deceased Jane – a plus-sized attorney – you get Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$38.95 SRP).     Recovering from some lost momentum, the third season of Burn Notice (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) turns back into the show we’ve all come to love.     I think a combination of political burnout and Michael Moore burnout led to Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP) being largely overlooked when it hit theaters last year – which is a shame, because it’s one of Moore’s most power documentaries, taking aim squarely at a system that has fractured in recent years due to runaway abuse. Give the doc a spin and see for yourself. Bonus materials include additional scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is available, with identical bonus features.

    It’s a knife edge when a film decides to present a character whose situation is so bleak that the audience could be sucked down the same well of despair, but Precious (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) manages to present its titular heroine with enough of a silver lining that I was right there with her, rooting for her escape from her awful life. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, a deleted scene, and the audition tape for star Gabourey Sidibe.

    I’ve seen dozens of them by now, but I’m such a sucker for documentaries about The Beatles, even if that documentary is about the crafting of Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles collaboration, Love, in All Together Now (Apple/Capitol, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP). Bonus materials include quite substantial featurettes.

    Remember when you could make a filthy rich oil man a crime-solving TV hero? If you doubt such a show ever existed, look no further than Matt Houston (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), where the title character uses said wealth to solve murders with the aid of his sexy lawyer sidekick. The first season set contains all 23 episodes, plus the original promos.

    Cast Bruce Boxleitner as an undercover spy who circumstances team up with a somewhat ditsy suburban Washington housewife, and you’ve got a show that still stands up as a pretty fun little romp – Scarecrow & Mrs. King (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). The first season set contains all 21 episodes, but not a single bonus feature. Come on, WB – give Bruce and Kate Jackson a call.

    It was pretty much ignored in the theaters, but there’s a lot of fun to be had in the animated Planet 51 (Sony, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP), which sets traditional alien films on their ears by landing an Earth astronaut in the suburban environment of a distant world. Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes, extended scenes, a music video montage, and more.

    Sibling rivalries, iron fists, and a cinematic dynasty are explored in the fascinating portrait The Brothers Warner (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), told by their family and the stars who had dealings with their megalithic moviemaking machine.

    Fans of Greek! I know you’re out there, because Greek: Chapter 4 (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) is hitting DVD, and if the college-based show’s made it four seasons, then someone’s watching it. The 3-disc set contains all 12 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, a music video, and bloopers.

    It’s been awhile since I’ve mentioned Warners’ wonderful on-demand DVD service, The Warner Archive Collection, but I’ll do so now with a pair of newly-available titles, first and foremost of which is a release of all 24 theatrical shorts comprising the Believe It Or Not series ($19.95), hosted by Robert L. Ripley. The second is a very young Johnny Depp, Jerry Lewis, and Faye Dunaway in Arizona Dream ($15.95).

    Rediscover a lost piece of comedy history – and a groundbreaking female comedian – with The Ultimate Goldbergs (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$59.99), which collects all of the extant episodes of the 1950’s sitcom The Goldbergs, created by and starring Gertrude Berg. The 6-disc set contains all 71 episodes known to exist, plus 12 episodes of its radio predecessor, the pilot for Berg’s subsequent show, and an excerpt of a documentary about her.

    Remember Wild Hogs? The middling, middle-aged empowerment road comedy with John Travolta & Tim Allen, amongst others? Well, Travolta’s back in what feels like the exact same film, Old Dogs (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$44.99 SRP), this time with Robin Williams in tow. Seth Green’s in it. That’s got to count for something, right? The set contains the standard DVD edition of the film, as well as an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and bloopers.

    A comedy about professional plagiarism and revenge gone decidedly offbeat, Gentlemen Broncos (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) isn’t quite as clever or offbeat as it should be, and winds up feeling like the bastard child of Napoleon Dynamite & Rushmore. Bonus materials include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

    I think, by the time you get to the fourth season of Dog Whisperer (Screen Media, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), you pretty much know what you’re getting from Cesar Milan’s canine-help show. So, suffice it to say, this more of the same, in a 5-disc box set containing 17 episodes (including the 100th), unaired segments, and bloopers.

    It’s a classic veteran cop saddled with a young partner scenario in the UK’s Dalziel & Pascoe (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP), as the duo solve murders in a delightful chalk & cheese fashion. The 2-disc first season set contains 3 feature-length telemovies.

    Miss Conan and want to make up old Late Night bits on your own? You can do just that by laughing along with the complete 7th season of Walker, Texas Ranger (Paramount, Not Rated, $49.99 SRP). It’s all the ludicrous Chuck Norris action you remember – heck, it’s 25 episodes worth!

  • Opinion In A Haystack: ALICE IN WONDERLAND

    Alice In Wonderland is the greatest film of the year, based on the trailer. A flick that we THINK we will love, and have already CONVINCED ourselves that we love, before having to, or needing to, see it. It seems like an easy sell, right? You got Tim Burton, Mr. Hot Topic, a parody of his former self, taking on the wild, weird, world of Lewis Carroll. We even get Johnny “surprise, surprise” Depp in the (sort of) lead role as the (supposedly) crazy, cooky, zany, wacky, insane-in-the-membrane, effeminate comedy tornado known as the Mad Hatter. Can’t go wrong. Right?

    Admitting that one has never read classic literature is always tough, but this reviewer will do it. I’ve never read any of Lewis Carroll’s works, with the exception of “Jabberwocky.” Like many of my fellow Generation-Pepsi brethren, my biggest forays into “Alice” were via Disney, The Disney channel, that TV movie, and any and all “eat me, drink me” pop culture references. Oddly, I think I am the perfect demographic for Burton’s film: people who have a hazy knowledge of the material to the point where confusion overtakes enjoyment and we just assume that what we watched was good, accurate, and well done due to special effects and filmmaker credentials.

    Well, first off, after much research and common-knowledge-recall, I think we can agree that Lewis Carroll’s works were meant to be gibberish, odd, and “cooky” (in an intentionally literate way) to begin with. The brilliant (I’ve heard at least) source material is obviously the least of Alice’s problems, especially since this film, much like Disney’s original, is a huge mash-up retelling of all things “Carroll” in a story that is a sequel to the stories that he wrote. Yeah, let me try to organize that thought: Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland is a sequel to the source material that uses story/plot elements from the source material coupled with newly-written material and material that is written from assumptions based on source material. Whew. Now, at least Disney’s original film was just a merging of two books, it doesn’t completely obliterate all possibility of children one day reading the books and understanding how the already confusing brilliance of Carroll fits together with their lifetime of understanding of what Burton told them it was. In the year 2030 there will be a lot of adults surprised to find out that ALICE IN WONDERLAND was possibly the most confusing title choice for a beloved nostalgic film of their youth. I guess Alice Returns To Wonderland was too complex for audiences to grasp. Hook wasn’t titled Peter Pan for a reason.

    I love(d) Burton, please know that, but the guy lost his “genius” switch almost a decade ago with Planet Of The Apes. Since then he truly has been doing Tim Burton “Auto-Pilot” theater, and Alice is no exception. If anything, it is more proof. There’s nothing wrong with a director teaming up for several upon several projects with a lead, especially one as talented as Depp. The problems begin when the collaboration starts to get obvious to the point of banality, to the point where it almost seems like they are dragging each other down because everything is taken for granted that nothing is artistically progressing.

    This time around Depp and Burton’s past has painfully caught up to them, helped in no way by the marketing blitz displaying the Mad Hatter’s admittedly insane appearance. So how off the deep end does Depp’s performance get? How maniacal does he take his character? How much does Burton’s Mad Hatter resemble a sentient volcano, filed with molten-crazy, ERUPTING COMEDY AT EVERY TURN??? Zip. Nothing. Notta. The MAD Hatter of Tim Burton’s nightmarish dream world is less crazy than most action-film comedy-relief characters during their subdued moments. His entrance and subsequent screen time is scathingly boring, to the point where his bland presence almost becomes embarrassing. In fact, he is actually one of the most serious characters in the movie, yet the movie itself doesn’t seem to realize it. I would assume this was intentional, they were trying to give the Hatter depth, yet it takes away the essential nature of the character. If I create a character called Homeless Jim, and he stops being Homeless, who is he? The craziest thing Mad Hatter does is dancing, via the excessively boring magic of CGI, for like 30 seconds. “Cringe-worthy” is a very clichéd term to use in any review. It was cringe-worthy as all hell.

    The last time Burton re-adapted the source material of an already beloved movie (a.k.a. it wasn’t a remake) I absolutely, positively hated it with every ounce of my body. Why should this be any different? Perhaps I’m not the audience for this (I guess.) Although, I try to stay positive, I’m always hoping that my fears about a flick are unjustified. Now I realize that I’ve talked very little about the actual movie itself, and honestly, it’s because I forgot most of whatever it was about. Something having to do with killing the Red Queen’s dragon, the Jabberwock, with the Vorple sword, which is from the poem “Jabberwocky” (yeah, it’s confusing.) What I do remember is that the plot was like Alice In Wonderland adapted, both in script and style, as the most derivative fantasy movie of last decade. I’m not joking either; there are shots of Alice and the Mad Hatter standing on a balcony together in front of Rivendale. Yes, that Rivendale. Waterfalls, majestic landscapes, soft focus, white glow and all. There is even a Narnia-like prophecy about an English child (Alice) returning to the fantasy world to kill the evil Queen (which from what I can research, is not from the books, so they willingly wrote such a derivative concept”¦I could be wrong.) This is all inflamed by an epic battle at the end, where we finally get to see Johnny Depp, as the Serious Hatter fight Crispin Glover with a CGI body. Finally, my dreams made corporeal!

    The movie is made up of giant assumptions and it derails from the second Alice steps into Wonderland. The tone is predicated upon audience’s perfect recollection and knowledge of the source material to the point that character’s speak Carroll’s gibberish, which if fine, BUT, they speak it fast and without the slightest bit of enunciation. The movie doesn’t seem to care that if the audience can’t hear the “nonsense” words, we can’t comprehend that they are, in fact, nonsense. I’ve read “Jabberwocky,” I know the word “bandersnatch,” yet I couldn’t tell they were saying it during the entire movie until the very end, struggling to Frankenstein-stitch all the syllables up in my brain. I’m all for nonsense and lunacy, but if I need subtitles to understand what the characters are speed-whispering the whole movie, what’s the point? This gives the entire production a feeling of disjointed, slovenly pacing, not to mention the fact that it doesn’t bother with any character setup. Burton expects that you know the individual and overall plights of these characters, and their struggle against the evil Red Queen, from the word go. Sure, we know what Alice’s deal is, but give us a bit more meat as to why these characters chose the sides they did, and what they have been doing since she left. You are writing a whole new story anyway, if you going to crap on it, at least explain some character motivation. Why doesn’t the Cheshire Cat use his powers to do anything of worth? Burton’s film leaves behind the helping Alice/hurting Alice, deviant nature of the books and Disney’s original film”¦in this he’s a force of apparent, straightforward “good.” This is a “new” story, one in which you’ve changed the tone to action-fantasy and the nature of the character”¦so I’m not asking Lewis Carroll, I’m asking Tim Burton (but I would be interested in Carroll’s response.) Why doesn’t the Cheshire Cat transport himself behind the Red Queen’s throne and slit her jugular with his nails? Ok, it’s a kid’s movie, but come one, this Cat is almost omniscient, practically immortal, and devilishly smart (he also has the power to physically morph into other forms?!?!) Yet, like a badly written Superman comic, he doesn’t work at his full potential.

    The cast does a fine job. It’s nice to see Crispin Glover on screen, even with a CGI body. Mia Wasikowska does a damn fine job as Alice. Alan Rickman, Helena Carter, Anne Hathaway, Stephen Fry”¦they are all top notch, movie aside. Right around here, two years ago, you would be treated to me complaining about CGI and green-screen based filmmaking, but I don’t have the energy anymore and I doubt there are any new arguments to bring to the pro-analog table. I would also have to explain why Avatar would get a pass from me, yet Alice seems to be killing my spirit, which in and of itself is probably the best review I could give you.

    Highly recommended to The Last Unicorn fans, Hot Topic employees and customers, and elderly folks who have nothing to do at 2pm on Tuesdays.

    It’s goofy, it’s gory, its history is a mess, the acting is hammy, but I’ve got to admit – Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) is a fun ride, and a call back to old-fashioned war movies of bygone years, with a healthy dose of Tarantino’s unique madness. The special edition contains a roundtable discussion, interviews, behind-the-scenes featurettes, extended/alternate scenes, Nation’s Pride (the film within the film), and (best of all) the original Inglorious Bastards.

    Picking up where Albert Finney left off in The Gathering Storm, Brendan Gleason steps into the role of Winston Churchill in Into The Storm (HBO, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), which finds the British Prime Minster as wartime leader and at the height of his power and influence. Gleason is equally as powerful in the role, and I look forward to seeing him in the next installment. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and a making-of featurette.

    It’s a shame that Public Enemies (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$36.98 SRP) isn’t, well, a more interesting film, because Johnny Depp in a Michael Mann film about John Dillinger should have been a home run look at an American anti-hero. Sadly, no. Bonus materials include an audio commentary and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    You might not know this, but Jerry Lewis hosted an NBC variety show from 1967-69, featuring a bevy of guest stars. Now you can view 13 of the episodes from that run via the 2-disc Jerry Lewis Show Collection (Infinity, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP).

    Rights issues have kept it in limbo seemingly forever, but all of that’s been ironed out enough to allow for the DVD release of Sita Sings The Blues (FilmKaravan, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP). To try and sum up the melding of various art styles with American blues and torch songs is to risk doing it a disservice. Just give it a spin.

    Melding environmentalism with action and intrigue, The Cove (Lionsgate, Rated PG-13, DVD-$27.98 SRP) is a documentary shines a light on a unique challenge for our flittered friends without sacrificing cinematic bang. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a documentary, and the theatrical trailer.

    Credit must go to writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait for delivering a Robin Williams vehicle that’s actually worth watching (they’re few and far between) in World’s Greatest Dad (Magnolia, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), a darkly comic tale of a man getting everything he wants – in the worst way possible. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, an audio commentary, and outtakes.

    Formed after the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan and consisting of original members Doyle Bramhall II, Charlie Sexton, and Chris Layton, the Arcangels recently reunited to record the album Living In A Dream (Mark I Productions, $25.00), which gets a deluxe special edition release with a bonus concert DVD and a bonus CD with new studio tracks and a live track.

    Take the sensibilities of Talladega Nights and transplant it to the dysfunctional misadventures of competitive car dealerships and you’ve got The Goods (Paramount, Rated R, DVD-$22.99 SRP), which would be a much better experience if it weren’t for the fact that Used Cars did it 30 years ago, and much better. Still, it’s a decent flick, and worth a cold winter spin.

    Due to the BBC’s insane tape policy, only 5 episodes of their Sherlock Holmes series survive, but all 5 are now available via The Sherlock Holmes Collection (A&E, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP), starring Peter Cushing as Homes – a character he first played in the Hammer Hound Of The Baskervilles. The set also features the Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective documentary.

    I have not, nor have I ever been a fan of magician Criss Angel and his goth/emo David Blaine ways. Still, there are fans out there, and for them there’s the Criss Angel: Mindfreak Collector’s Edition (A&E, Not Rated, DVD-$99.95 SRP), a 15-disc set containing all 5 seasons plus 6 new-to-DVD episodes, commentaries, featurettes, interactive illusions, additional scenes, and more.

    Ang Lee’s directorial choices usually are more interesting than the films that result from them, and such is the case with his comedy inspired by the events surrounding the staging of 1969’s seminal festival in Taking Woodstock (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP). Maybe that’s because Demetri Martin is not terribly comfortable onscreen as Elliot Tiber, a local who played a pivotal role in making sure the event came off as planned, and wound up with a few life changes of his own. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette.

    Ironic that Disney’s Wizards Of Waverly Place: The Movie (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP) can’t summon up half the magic of cross-cable rival iCarly, which is a shame considering star Selena Gomez seems desperate for better material than what she’s been given in this tepid feature-length special that plays like a magical Back To The Future. Bonus features include a batch of on location behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    My mind is still reeling from the sonic assualt that is the soundtrack to Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Rhino, $18.98 SRP). For every decent, classic-sounding Chipmunks track, there’s something ear-shatteringly awful as a tune in which the accelerated vocals are auto-tuned. Yes. You heard me.

    I don’t know about you, but when I think Jerry Bruckheimer, I think of an elite team of hyper-intelligent, trained guinea pigs who go on secret missions to save the world. G-Force (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$44.98 SRP) is like a cross between The Rescuers and Mission Impossible, and veers wildly between goofy fun and laughable disaster. Kids will love it. The 3-disc set contains deleted scenes, featurettes, music videos, and the DVD version of the film.

    The third season of The Tudors (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$42.99 SRP) finds Henry VIII’s life taking a decidedly more complicated turn, with his marriages to Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves, the downfall of Thomas Cromwell, and his relationship with Katherine Howard. The 3-disc set contains all 8 episodes, a timeline featurette, interviews, and the first 2 episodes of The United States Of Tara.

    RIP: A REMIX MANIFESTO – Contest

    rip_homeGirl Talk is without question one of the more progressive musical artists of the 21st century and it’s an abomination that current laws prohibit this man from fully realizing his potential.

    Back when albums from The Beastie Boys or Biz Markie in the late 80’s included enough samples to make any litigious lawyer nowadays salivate at the chance to sue for copyright infringement it is a godsend that they did not because these artists brought another dimension to their own vision of what music should be. There is a difference between the wholesale theft of a musician’s original work and what someone else could do with the atoms and particles of it and crafting a pastiche of originality.

    RiP: A REMIX MANIFESTO brings this issue and more like it to the surface as a documentary that is out to define what it is to be dealing with the issue of copyright in our modern age. Crafted over 6 years and still not finished as the makers of the film allow viewers to make their own version of the film, their own mash-up of sorts. Further, those living in the US name their own rate for the film which is also available in Apple’s iTunes store.

    In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

    The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

    A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

    MAFIA – DVD Review

    00095470-947063_275Watching PUBLIC ENEMIES last week put me in the mood to take advantage of watching a series that out some reality back into my television watching.

    For some it’s Friends or the Office or some variation on the sitcom we’ve all come to know and revile, for me it’s a solid documentary. Specifically, I’m addicted to the seedier side of our American heritage and nowhere else has this addiction been better satisfied than with the History channel’s examination into the mob with The Mafia. In what feels like 10 brisk hours you go from thinking you know everything about the mob because you’ve watched all the seasons of the Soprano’s to having a better understanding on a subject that has all levels of great storytelling: love, murder, revenge and the dark realization that this is still going on in the world. (Just ask the author of Gomorrah, Roberto Saviano. He wrote an expose on organized crime in Naples and was put under police protection.)

    The DVD set is currently available through the History Channel and, an added bonus, on sale. For $28.00 you are getting more than a history lesson, you’re getting a dose of cold reality that even though the Irish help build America it was a sect of Italians who were there to make sure they got a piece of the action.

    PUBLIC ENEMIES – Review

    public-enemies-posterThe very thing that makes PUBLIC ENEMIES a fresh entry into the summer movie dogfight is its Achilles heel.

    When Michael Mann made the decision to shoot the film about the notorious gangster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI agent assigned to catch him, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), he shot a film throughout the Midwest corridor that tries to capture 1933’s America.

    Banks were seen as the real public enemy, much like if we had a gangster knocking down AIG branches if there were any, their locations already familiar to Mann who knows how to break down and block a bank robbery, down to the detail of the crook letting the common man know that their money is not the money they want. There is a kind of reverse vigilantism at play in some portions in this film but one of the sticking points this story has is that Dillinger was not ever ready to go back to jail and, if given the opportunity, he would just as soon as mow down a pack of coppers with his tommy gun as he would proclaiming how untouchable he is. Marion Cotillard, playing Dillinger’s flavor of choice throughout the movie, is another Mann trademark, a woman whose odd sense of independence is overwhelmed by the machismo of her male suitor to the point of rendering her all but feeble and powerless to fend off the advances of such a Lothario. One of the frustrating things about women like her, like HEAT’s Brenneman, is that they are caught up in this gangster lifestyle without so much as a terrible crisis of faith. It’s easy to see how a man like Depp could become the criminal he is just by the quickly shot opening moments of this film but Marion’s flip to a life of crime just doesn’t connect and that’s really what prevents this film from becoming anything else but a slicker dramatization of something you could see on the History channel any night of the week.

    The set pieces, though, are gorgeous. Mann takes full advantage of this HD world in a way that challenges an audience’s expectations of what a period piece should look like. Mann brings an immediacy to the moment and takes what could have been a very simple recreation of past events look and feel like something that happened yesterday. This plays into Mann’s favor. One of the things that linger with you, or ought to, is that for anyone who thinks that using HD somehow disturbs the sense of time and place go to any moment when Depp walks into a bank. The richness of the colors, the polish on the floor, the marble that shines everywhere, the ornateness of the ceilings it all adds another dimension to the world that Mann wants to create. To those people in the 30’s life was in HD to them. This was how their world looked and felt. What some may fail to recognize is that Mann faithfully executes 1930’s America in a way that has never before been done in cinema. When Depp traipses through Purvis’ office, leisurely, quietly you cannot help but feel that you are there in moment with him. The only issue with the way he has decided to shoot his film, however, comes in the moments when you see the limitations of the technology plays with trying to capture a time when there was none.

    There are great gun battles, to be sure. Outside of a bank, a couple of banks actually, fleeing from a jail in a daring and brazen prison break and a fantastic fire fight that occurs late at night. It’s the latter tussle that causes some of the weaker moments of this film to be exposed. It is HD’s inability to be consistently crisp which can lead some viewers to be jarred while keeping an eye on the action. There are moments when the characters “ghost” on the screen, they leave a faint trail at times that can be distracting to those paying attention if the action moves too fast, and can actually get in the way for real cinematic tricks where film, actually, could have brought a better result.

    As well, the movie cannot stand on just the promise of derring-do and double-speak for those looking to an escape for a true crime film. The movie actually suffers from a lack of context. John Dillinger, yes, was a crook and criminal but where are the moments that show a more defined man? To deny Dillinger his humanity, and anyone pointing to his treatment of Cotillard as an example might as well long for the days when cavemen dragged their ladies by the scruff of their hair, is to deny the audience a real opportunity to feel emotionally invested in what happens to the man. Surprising as it is coming from Mann who so effortlessly humanized Robert De Niro in HEAT in a moment that few people could ever forget, the scene where he plays against Al Pacino in a diner, and made you root for him when he came to settle things up with Waingro. It’s surprising because you know how it ends for Dillinger. Any text book could tell you, any television show could recreate the moment but a real opportunity was missed in bringing some semblance of a human being to the screen.

    To think more about Christian Bale’s performance only highlights the egregious oversight about Dillinger’s wasted character arc as Bale simply exists in this landscape with nothing more to do than just act out the lines he’s given. It’s not that he can’t bring something exciting as the man in charge of bringing Dillinger in but unless Purvis was a real drip Bale’s performance illustrates his inability to actually bring some emotional depth to this agent of the law. It’s disappointing that what we get is just Bale being Bale but with a twangy accent to go along for the ride. Billy Crudup provides some of the best unintentional comedic relief as his J. Edgar Hoover impersonation feels as if it belongs in a Saturday Night Live sketch about the man who founded the FBI as it fails to embody the sense that here was a man who was in charge of bringing some kind of order, some semblance of safety to a landscape that felt out of control.

    While the film plods along, it’s examination into what happened in these pivotal years when Dillinger strolled free through Chicago before eventually meeting his demise simply does nothing more than just regurgitate recreated moments on the screen, it still is a wonder to look at on the big screen. There are real moments of good filmmaking here but it is a disappointment that there aren’t real moments of excellent filmmaking from a man who shown better depth dealing with men who bear arms.

    In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) – the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

    But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang – later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi) – thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”

    However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals – from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti – were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

  • Weekend Shopping Guide 3/6/09: In The Pink

    The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the Quick Stop Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

    The American version is often an over-produced mess, but the original UK version of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (Acorn, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP) – which finds uber-chef Gordon Ramsay attempting to save failing restaurants often in the face of obstinence and incompetence – is a real gem. Ramsay genuinely tries to help these troubled businesses, and his sound advice is just as engaging as the passion with which he delivers it. Now you can get the entire 8-episode first season of the UK version, and I highly recommend it.

    I love gadgets, and tools that feel like gadgets. That’s certainly the case with the Third Hand Adjustable Parts Holder with Magnification ($7.99 SRP). As the overly technical name implies, this weighted stand contains clamps and a magnifying glass, making it perfect for doing close-up work with everything from electronics to painting.

    I would have preferred it have been A Shot In The Dark, but I guess the high definition arrival of the original The Pink Panther (MGM, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP) is a good sign that I’ll soon be getting my favorite comedic turn by Peter Sellers as the memorable Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The Blu-Ray edition features an audio commentary with Blake Edwards, and five behind-the-scenes and retrospective featurettes.

    Released in separate packages previously, MGM has brought together all 9 volumes Pink Panther cartoons into The Pink Panther Collection (MGM, Not Rated, DVD-$69.98 SRP). Not only do you get the Panther cartoons, but you also get Depatie-Freleng’s Inspector, Ant & The Aardvark, and The Man cartoons. So, really, the whole shebang, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes, all of the title sequences for the Panther features, an even a tribute to Friz Freleng.

    I’m not entirely sure why these DC animated direct-to-DVD titles abandoned the much-refined and wonderful Bruce Timm-syled designs of JLU in favor of clunkier, uglier, more angular designs unless the sole reason was (sad) change for change sake, but that is a major “ugh” point in the not-exactly-stellar animated Wonder Woman (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which finds Princess Diana going up against the evil Ares, God of War. The 2-disc set features an audio commentary, a pair of in-depth documentaries on Wonder Woman and the mythology behind her, a pair of bonus Bruce Timm-chosen JLU cartoons, and a first-look at the upcoming Green Lantern animated movie. A Blu-Ray edition ($29.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus features.

    Although I find the subject matter interesting, you’ve gotta love a book title like Hippo In A Tutu (Disney Press, $30.00 SRP). The reference is to the “Dance Of The Hours” sequence of Disney’s Fantasia, wherein alligators dance with hippos. The book takes an in-depth look at the role of dance, choreography, and reference for both in the animated films of Walt Disney, and it’s well worth picking up.

    Fans have been clamoring for it for years – well, they’ve been clamoring for anything from the band, really – but they’re surely dancing a happy jig at the release of Phish: The Clifford Ball (Rhino, Not Rated, DVD-$99.99 SRP). The 7-disc set features the entirety of the band’s 2-day concert happening held on August 16 & 17, 1996. It’s an incredibly musical document, and now you can have it to play again and again.

    Though the stories comprising it are being released separately, the best and easiest way to get the entire arc is to just pick up the Doctor Who: Key To Time Special Edition (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$99.98 SRP), as the 7-disc set has got the whole kit and kaboodle. Each disc is like a TARDIS, loaded with the usual complement of commentaries, featurettes, and archive materials.

    Not many cartoons can boast a guest turn by Johnny Depp, but a certain spongy yellow character can in the episode collection Spongebob Squarepants: Spongebob Vs The Big One (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP). In addition to the Depp ep, the disc also sports 6 more, plus an audio commentary and a music video.

    You can see every drop of sweat in the new Blu-Ray edition of Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (MGM, Rated R, DVD-$34.98 SRP), and the clarity adds a certain punch to the proceedings. The disc features a trio of audio commentaries, a 4-part feature-length documentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, vintage newsreel footage, and a shot-by-shot comparison of DeNiro & La Motta.

    If you’ve got a lot of free time, are really jonesing for the Watchmen movie, and are a huge fan of those late 60’s Marvel cartoons, then you’ll probably want to give a spin to Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which adds motion, voice actors, and sound effects to Dave Gibbons’ original artwork. A Blu-Ray edition ($35.99 SRP) is also available, for those who crave high definition.

    If you want to find a little bit more about the author behind Watchmen, V: For Vendetta, From Hell, and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, you can’t do wrong in picking up a copy of the re-released and expanded The Extraordinary Works Of Alan Moore: Indispensable Edition (Twomorrows, $29.95 SRP).

    Though my nephews lap it up, I still watch Chowder (Cartoon Network, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP) mainly for the sterling voicework of my erstwhile comedy partner, Dana Snyder, who handles the lumbering, memorable Gazpacho. This second volume contains 5 episodes.

    I know it made money. I know that people went to go see it. Intellectually, I know these things. I still can’t rationalize that knowledge into any semblance of an endorsement for Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Walt Disney, Rated PG, DVD-$29.99 SRP). I guess it’s like a latter-day That Darn Cat. But with Chihuahuas. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, an animated short, and bloopers. The Blu-Ray edition ($34.99 SRP) contains additional behind-the-scenes featurettes and deleted scenes not on the standard release.

    I prefer to believe the awkward director’s cut doesn’t exist, but I did love Donnie Darko (Fox, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP) when I first saw it, and now you can pick it up in high definition in a 2-disc edition that includes both cuts, audio commentaries, a production diary, featurettes, and more.

    Make sure your young ones get to Sesame Street for Elmo & Friends: Tales OF Adventure (Genius, Not Rated, DVD-$12.95 SRP), featuring a trio of tales featuring Elmo, Big Bird, and Telly as they go on thrilling adventures in learning. Can you say “Texas Telly and The Golden Triangle Of Destiny”?

    Baz Luhrman’s epic story of love between an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) and a rough-&-tumble cattle driver (Hugh Jackman) in the Outback is certainly big and sprawling, but Australia (Fox, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.99 SRP) is also big and bloated, dragging on and on and on until it just sort of ends. It’s a shame, because there’s a good flick in there someplace. Bonus features include deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes featurettes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    Oh, The Hills (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) – how I loathe your very existence. And I don’t know why, exactly, as its existence should not bother me in the least, and shouldn’t even be on my radar. And yet it is. And it does bother me so. For those who are unbothered, the complete 4th season set contains all 20 episodes, plus interviews, deleted scenes, featurettes, photo shoots, and more.
