  • Weekend Shopping Guide 5/19/17: Q-Figure It Out

    Many folks are enamored with Funko’s Pop figures, but I’ve always found their stylistic sameness and beady Coraline eyes to be both boring and disturbing. For my money, I’ll go with the Q-Figs from Quantum Mechanix ($14.95 SRP each). Not only are the stylization of the designs infinitely more appealing to me, but they also allow for much more dynamic poses. These are beautiful pieces that look perfect on a desk or shelf. Just take a gander at the cross-section of pieces below, from Spider-Man’s mid-photo street lamp dangle to Mr. Freeze’s frustrated attempt to eat an ice cream cone, these are just spectacularly fun. Come on, look at how dynamic that Harry Potter is! I can’t wait to see where this line goes from here… And I hope some classic-costumed members of the Fantastic Four – and a Doctor Doom! – are in the offing soon.

    I continue to follow Game Of Thrones and a I stuck through an increasingly-baffling Westworld, but the real joy of the HBO year is the one-two return of Veep & Silicon Valley (HBO, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$24.99 SRP each), which also means the welcome arrival of their respective previous season box sets just before the new seasons hit. And considering the density of the writing on both, it’s quite enjoyable to have a refresher binge. While Silicon Valley only sports some deleted scenes, Veep packs on both deleted scenes and audio commentaries, every one of which is worth a listen.

    Over the course of 25 volumes released over the past 13 years, Fantagraphics has done a truly incredible job presenting the complete 50-year run of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. It was no small amount of surprise and delight that they tacked on a 26th volume of The Complete Peanuts (Fantagraphics, $29.99 SRP), which gathers together rare comics, advertising art, and drawings produced during the strip’s half-century run. A lovely end for a brilliant presentation of a legendary strip.

    When Thinkgeek designs products in-house, it’s a fair bet that the final result will be something you didn’t even know you wanted until you saw it, and then you must absolutely have it. Case in point are a pair of cookery items sure to make the kid – or adult – enamored with all things Pokemon absolutely giddy. Have a party coming up? Use the Pikachu Cake Pan (Thinkgeek, $19.99) to bake an electrifying treat. Or, if you’ve come in from a hit day of wandering the wastelands to fill out your Pokedex in Pokemon Go, chill your drink with ice cubes made from a Pikachu Silicon Mold (Thinkgeek, $9.99). See? How can you resist ’em!

    Generational nostalgia is a linear beast, which means everything will eventually get its moment, which brings us to the release of the complete first and second season of Nickelodeon’s beloved Rugrats (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP each). The shows have never looked better on home video, and while there are sadly no bonus features to speak of, it’s nice to have them available.

    The plate may now be empty, but there was once a glorious confection of a British import that you can savor again with the release of The Great British Baking Show: Seasons 1-3 (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP each). While the future holds a radically different program, we can still taste the sweetness of the original version.

    I’m a sucker for ephemera books – you know, the kind that feature reproductions of rare historical materials – and in their eternal quest for new revenue streams, we get Monty Python’s Flying Circus: Hidden Treasures (Abrams, $40 SRP), featuring tons of the aforementioned ephemera to delight fans.

    Sure, there’s a fair bit of Saturday Night Fever (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$16.99 SRP), but the remastered director’s cut proves that the aspirational tale remains timeless and Travolta’s performance is still a career-defining marvel. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, and a deleted scene.

    While I’m not particularly enthusiastic about Pixar’s vehicular franchise, I very much adore the Art Of books that the company does with the fine folks at Chronicle, the latest of which is The Art Of Cars 3 (Chronicle Books, $40 SRP). As usual, it’s positively packed with concept art and behind-the-scenes insight.

    In an age where facts are being assailed and history denied, now more than ever we need the objective, quality programming being produced by PBS. You can do that by catching up on the scores of excellent documentary and news programs they’re releasing on home video. For the politically and socially minded, there’s Frontline: Divided States Of America (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP) about the polarization in the U.S., a sobering look at the rise of 45 in Frontline: President Trump (PBS, Bot Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), Frontline: Battle For Iraq/Hunting ISIS (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), the battle against the film The Birth Of A Nation in Birth Of A Movement (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), The Talk: Race In America (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), John Lewis: Get In The Way (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), American Experience: Ruby Ridge (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), and the history of modern martial justice in Dead Reckoning (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP). For the science-minded, you’ve got storms galore in Wild Weather (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), plant behavior in Plants Behaving Badly (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), engineering the Ultimate Cruise Ship (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), Nova: Search For The Super Battery (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), the Himalayan archeological mysteries in Nova: Secrets Of The Sky Tombs (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), the applied science of Nova: The Origami Revolution (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP), and the fascinating medical advances of Military Medicine (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP).

    Sketch comedy is hard to do, and when you set the bar as high as Amy Schumer had with the first three seasons of Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), not hitting that high-water mark is more easily noticed. That’s the case with the often strained but still funny 4th season. Bonus materials include a writers room featurette and outtakes.

    The 1957 police drama Decoy (Film Chest Media, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) was significant for a trio of firsts – the first police drama to shoot in NYC, the first to feature a police woman as the main protagonist, and the first to feature stories based on real-life subjects. Starring Bevery Garland as Office Casey Jones, you can now rediscover this forgotten series via this set, featuring all 39 episodes.

    The nicest thing I can say about Vin Diesel’s pet resurrection of a franchise, XXX: Return Of Xander Cage (Paramount, Rated PG-13, UltraHD 4K-$49.99 SRP), is that he’s really, really good as Groot in Guardians Of The Galaxy. As for this – I’m still trying to figure out who was asking for it, and why. I assume it was Vin. It was probably Vin. Bonus materials include featurettes and a gag reel.

    There’s a lot of tension to be found in the drama of a diamond-dealing family dragged into the underworld in Ice (eOne, Not Rated, DVD-$40.99 SRP), but the real draw of watching the show is its cast, which features Donald Sutherland, Ray Winstone, and Jeremy Sisto. Bonus materials include featurettes and a music video.

    There’s a lot of fun to be found in Warners new franchise push – DC Superhero Girls: Intergalactic Games (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), which finds the female superheroes in friendly competition that runs afoul of a bevy of baddies. Bonus materials include 7 featurettes and a music video.

    While I don’t think it was one of their better seasons, there was still much to enjoy in South Park: The Complete Fourteenth Season (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$57.99 SRP), and even more so as both Trey & Matt return for their patented mini-commentaries on all of the episodes, deleted scenes, and a bonus episode.

    If you’re in to DIY and want to extend it to your electronic devices, you might have been stumped by the often proprietary screws they have. Well, be stifled no more with the Access Pro Tool Kit ($19.99), which contains tips and tools that will give you access to everything from games consoles to cell phones and more.

    DA Pennebaker’s seminal documentary Bob Dylan: Don’t Look Back (Docurama, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) has made the transition to high definition, looking and sounding better than ever, carrying over the audio commentary and bonus features from the original DVD release, in addition to a bonus disc with a behind-the-scenes documentary on Dylan and an interview with Pennebaker.

    Long before John Travolta became an alien joke, he starred as a sound effects man who believes he’s accidentally recorded a political assassination in Brian De Palma’s gripping if in consistent thriller Blow Out (Criterion, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP), which has been given a beautiful high definition treatment by the fine folks at Criterion. This special edition pulls in brand-new interviews, De Palma’s 1967 feature Murder a la Mod, on-set photos, and the theatrical trailer.

    In a change of pace from their recent nature documentaries, the BBC turns their high definition cameras on people for the series Human Planet (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.98 SRP), which looks at how we interact with the natural world that surrounds us. The Blu-Ray contains the original UK version of the 8-part series, which features narration from John Hurt and three hours of scenes not screened in the US, plus a clutch of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    If you’re at all interested in the nuts and bolts that built the Hollywood Dream Factory, look no further than TCM’s excellent documentary series Moguls & Movie Stars: A History Of Hollywood (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$27.99 SRP). The 3-disc set features 7 episodes, tracing the business’s origins in peepshows all the way to end of the studio system in the late 60’s. The set also includes bonus interviews and featurettes.

    It’s hard to believe Sid & Marty Krofft’s iconic H.R. Pufnstuf (Vivendi, Not Rated, DVD-$34.97 SRP) only ran for a total of 17 episodes. Like most enduring franchises, one remembers the number being far more robust, which just goes to prove how memorable the show was to be able to make so much of an impact with so little. This new collection improves the picture quality of the long out-of-print set from a few years back, and also includes a never-before-released episode of Horror Hotel from the Krofft Superstar Hour (not to mention the Pufnstuf Bobblehead that comes packaged with the special edition set).

    If you haven’t been buying them individually, catch up on one of the most beautifully executed astronomical documentary series ever aired with The Universe: The Complete Series Megaset (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$179.95 SRP), which brings together all 5 seasons plus the 7 Wonders Of The Solar System disc. Nice.

    Years after the release of its debut season, the Seaver family gets their sophomore run out of the gate with Growing Pains: The Complete Second Season (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP). The 3-disc set features all 22 episodes, plus Kirk Cameron’s 80’s-fro.

    If you have a youngster in your family, Scholastic’s Storybook Treasures line of book adaptations are lovely gifts to give. The latest is a collection celebrating Asian Heritage, featuring the story Tikki Tikki Tembo (Scholastic, Not Rated, DVD-$14.95 SRP), plus 6 additional stories.

    Before Earth’s mightiest heroes hit the big screen, Marvel has primed audiences with an animated series – and you can now get the first 13 episodes of the inaugural season via The Avengers: Volume 1 – Heroes Assemble! & Volume 2 – Captain America Reborn! (Walt Disney, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP each). Both discs also feature a sneak peek at the upcoming second season.

    I wish I had half the energy that Stan Lee has. The man’s got more projects going than Spielberg. One of them is a reality show for The History Channel, Stan Lee’s Superheroes (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$ SRP), which finds the octogenarian wonder fronting a series that looks at real-life superheroic feats done by extraordinary people. Excelsior!

    They were originally released a few years back, but with leaner times and decreasing shelf-space, A&E has re-released Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman – Season 1, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman – Season 2, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman – Season 3 & Highway To Heaven: Season 1 (A&E Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP each) in smaller, more streamlined packaging. Everything else about the sets content remains exactly the same, just in a drastically smaller box.

    Earth day may have just passed, but you can still explore the origins of the Earth and the potential consequences of our actions upon it in Our Planet: The Past, Present and Future of Earth (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP), a documentary that does what it says on the tin.

    While it attempts to capture the charm and update a classic, the BBC’s new take on Upstairs, Downstairs (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP) never seems to gel into something that’s actually watchable. Which is a shame, since there’s so much potential to the parallel tales of the rich and their servants. The 2-disc set also contains a behind-the-scenes featurette.

    If you’ve ever wondered what special information the President of the United States might be privy to, you might get a kick out of the documentary The President’s Book Of Secrets (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP), which looks at what exactly the POTUS knows and the trivia surrounding it.

    Take one last look at the brutal members of some of the country’s toughest gangs in Gangland: The Final Season (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$49.95 SRP). The 3-disc set also contains additional footage.

    I’ve spoken to a few of his contemporaries in the past, and all of them described the drive and determination related in Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story (Vivendi, Not Rated, DVD-$26.97 SRP), a documentary which uses the comedian’s build up to his most recent world tour to explore his life and comedy. It’s a brilliant, brilliant portrait of a brilliant comic mind. Bonus materials include additional footage and interviews.

    Perfect for the dorm, office, or when you need some extra food and drink space during a party, the Deluxe Mini-Fridge ($99.99) from Thinkgeek is a nice, compact unit with a 20liter capacity (plenty of room for soda or snacks) that can act as either a fridge or a warmer. It’s also versatile, containing connections for either the home or car. Trick out your home office that way you’ve always dreamed… Because those trips to the kitchen are such a massive timewaster.

    I think a combination of political burnout and Michael Moore burnout led to Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story (Anchor Bay, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP) being largely overlooked when it hit theaters last year – which is a shame, because it’s one of Moore’s most power documentaries, taking aim squarely at a system that has fractured in recent years due to runaway abuse. Give the doc a spin and see for yourself. Bonus materials include additional scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is available, with identical bonus features.

    It’s a knife edge when a film decides to present a character whose situation is so bleak that the audience could be sucked down the same well of despair, but Precious (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) manages to present its titular heroine with enough of a silver lining that I was right there with her, rooting for her escape from her awful life. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, a deleted scene, and the audition tape for star Gabourey Sidibe.

    I’ve seen dozens of them by now, but I’m such a sucker for documentaries about The Beatles, even if that documentary is about the crafting of Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles collaboration, Love, in All Together Now (Apple/Capitol, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP). Bonus materials include quite substantial featurettes.

    Remember when you could make a filthy rich oil man a crime-solving TV hero? If you doubt such a show ever existed, look no further than Matt Houston (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), where the title character uses said wealth to solve murders with the aid of his sexy lawyer sidekick. The first season set contains all 23 episodes, plus the original promos.

    Cast Bruce Boxleitner as an undercover spy who circumstances team up with a somewhat ditsy suburban Washington housewife, and you’ve got a show that still stands up as a pretty fun little romp – Scarecrow & Mrs. King (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). The first season set contains all 21 episodes, but not a single bonus feature. Come on, WB – give Bruce and Kate Jackson a call.

    It was pretty much ignored in the theaters, but there’s a lot of fun to be had in the animated Planet 51 (Sony, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP), which sets traditional alien films on their ears by landing an Earth astronaut in the suburban environment of a distant world. Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes, extended scenes, a music video montage, and more.

    Sibling rivalries, iron fists, and a cinematic dynasty are explored in the fascinating portrait The Brothers Warner (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), told by their family and the stars who had dealings with their megalithic moviemaking machine.

    Fans of Greek! I know you’re out there, because Greek: Chapter 4 (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP) is hitting DVD, and if the college-based show’s made it four seasons, then someone’s watching it. The 3-disc set contains all 12 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, a music video, and bloopers.

    It’s been awhile since I’ve mentioned Warners’ wonderful on-demand DVD service, The Warner Archive Collection, but I’ll do so now with a pair of newly-available titles, first and foremost of which is a release of all 24 theatrical shorts comprising the Believe It Or Not series ($19.95), hosted by Robert L. Ripley. The second is a very young Johnny Depp, Jerry Lewis, and Faye Dunaway in Arizona Dream ($15.95).

    Rediscover a lost piece of comedy history – and a groundbreaking female comedian – with The Ultimate Goldbergs (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$59.99), which collects all of the extant episodes of the 1950’s sitcom The Goldbergs, created by and starring Gertrude Berg. The 6-disc set contains all 71 episodes known to exist, plus 12 episodes of its radio predecessor, the pilot for Berg’s subsequent show, and an excerpt of a documentary about her.

    Remember Wild Hogs? The middling, middle-aged empowerment road comedy with John Travolta & Tim Allen, amongst others? Well, Travolta’s back in what feels like the exact same film, Old Dogs (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$44.99 SRP), this time with Robin Williams in tow. Seth Green’s in it. That’s got to count for something, right? The set contains the standard DVD edition of the film, as well as an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and bloopers.

    A comedy about professional plagiarism and revenge gone decidedly offbeat, Gentlemen Broncos (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) isn’t quite as clever or offbeat as it should be, and winds up feeling like the bastard child of Napoleon Dynamite & Rushmore. Bonus materials include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

    I think, by the time you get to the fourth season of Dog Whisperer (Screen Media, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP), you pretty much know what you’re getting from Cesar Milan’s canine-help show. So, suffice it to say, this more of the same, in a 5-disc box set containing 17 episodes (including the 100th), unaired segments, and bloopers.

    It’s a classic veteran cop saddled with a young partner scenario in the UK’s Dalziel & Pascoe (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP), as the duo solve murders in a delightful chalk & cheese fashion. The 2-disc first season set contains 3 feature-length telemovies.

    Miss Conan and want to make up old Late Night bits on your own? You can do just that by laughing along with the complete 7th season of Walker, Texas Ranger (Paramount, Not Rated, $49.99 SRP). It’s all the ludicrous Chuck Norris action you remember – heck, it’s 25 episodes worth!

    PUBLIC ENEMIES – Arizona Screening

    pe_field_300x250So, is it bad that I hope this is the real summer movie that Christian Bale is in?

    I know a lot of whiners out there want to take the movie to task for using digital but I, for one, applaud Michael Mann for using what worked for well for him in COLLATERAL and MIAMI VICE. Those two movies benefited from a technology that brought a different film going experience to the multiplex. It’s obvious some people like it, some not but Christian Bale and Johnny Depp? I’m sorry but Bruce Wayne in his non-Batman throaty scratch and Depp playing a role that doesn’t require him channeling Keith Richards is a movie I want to see.

    THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 – Review

    taking_of_pelham_1-2-3_2009It’s nice that my parents finally have a summer movie to call their own.

    The biggest problem I have with this film, which is about as close as a Paint-By-Numbers exercise in filmmaking as you can get when you consider how rote Tony Scott’s direction is in this clone of a movie, is how utterly vapid and cardboard the characters are.

    You’ve got a tougher than sun dried leather man in John Travolta playing the film’s resident badass, Ryder. His foil, the angel to his devil on his shoulder, is Walter Garber played by Denzel Washington. For those who need the crash course in what this movie is about, it seems that Ryder wants to hijack a subway car for a lump sum of cash. Garber is a dispatcher who just happens to be at the other end of the call demanding that money but the issues that are glaringly obvious as soon as this plot starts to push forward like a labored moving subway car is that the movie can’t capture the same riveting intimacy as the 1974 classic because Scott wants to employ all the frenetic camera movements, and we’ll get into this shortly, in his wheelhouse. The problem is that this isn’t a movie that is served by quick shots, sets drenched in hazy green lighting, stylized slo-motion clips or, quite literally, spastic camera jiggling. 1974’s version of PELHAM worked because it didn’t have the same access to effect work as Scott obviously does and, here’s the thing, wants to remind you that he’s in charge of directing this thing.

    This film doesn’t need to be treated as an equal to the previous PELHAM, it is obvious it has no concern for it, but if what we have in the first 1/3rd of this movie is so appallingly numbing with its insistence on pushing its literal vision on an audience there shouldn’t be any reason why any other part of the film should be regarded with any care as well. Lucky for us, Scott doesn’t.

    The performances that are eked out of Travolta is nothing short of campy and should be placed in the realm of bombastic simply for the sake of it, Denzel seemingly sleepwalking through a role that has about as much weight as a dozen balloons filled with helium. This ought to be a film about a savvy mastermind who wants to mete out his revenge in a thoughtful, dramatic fashion and who has no qualms about taking the lives of those he’s taken hostage. A simple illustrative comparison of what made Hans Gruber such a sinister bad guy was that he was at once suave, intelligent and dangerously cold blooded. Both films used the idea of having a crime take place in a tight, confined space, and I realize these are two different kinds of films, but Hans was a character that was used to a lot better effect than Travolta hamming it up here was able to do. Travolta is PLAYING the part of being a telephone tough guy but he isn’t tough, he’s all bark. It’s only because the script calls for him to pop a guy or two that you believe he’s capable of killing as he certainly doesn’t earn any genuine intimidation when he’s on the screen.

    Now, Denzel, on the other hand, deserves a little bit more credit but not much. Playing a character who’s on probation for suspicion for doing something so morally objectionable certainly doesn’t display any of the affectations of someone who is at the precipice of losing it all. The character he plays isn’t as likable, to drag this comparison back to DIE HARD, as Sgt. Al Powell who also had to use nothing but a microphone to sell his character. Denzel had to act against a microphone and does a pretty decent job. I say decent because there isn’t any way I could care less or more about his circumstances. I don’t know whether I should think he’s just an innocent man caught up in a dire situation or if he’s just as bad as the guy leading the hijacking; obviously, there is an overt difference between the two but the problem is the movie doesn’t make that distinction. It lets that sort of float out there in the ether of flashy editing. The movie misses a great opportunity to differentiate the two men or to completely muddle the idea that maybe they aren’t different. We just don’t know and that’s the failure of the film: it doesn’t want to invest in any emotional tethering.

    I want to feel a certain amount of pity for Denzel. I want to believe that there might be a way to get through to Travolta. I certainly want to feel something. But with all the other circus characters that are introduced James Gandolfini (the Mayor of New York), John Turturro (the negotiator), and a host of others just become dizzying distractions to what is already a mess of lifeless corpses. I simply don’t care about, nor am I given much reason to, anyone here. Sure, Denzel is the real protagonist here but simply because someone is put in a dire situation doesn’t mean you earn the right for me to care. There is a real opportunity missed in turning the one moment of this film where the line between thief and thief is blurred and making that a touchstone. No, we’re just pushed along because Scott has a finish line, and dammit, we’re going to make it. The final 20 minutes of this film are genuinely anticlimactic in the very worst sense. There is no danger, no imminent danger to anyone, no real threat and that’s one of the greatest crimes committed against audiences who deserve to be thrilled and who are only left mildly piqued by what they’re given.

    That brings us to Tony Scott’s direction.

    I’ve never really seen a movie that embodies the idea of over stylized than I did as Scott employed the very same tricks here as he has with DOMINO and DEJA VU. Not only that but should a viewer be more consumed with wondering why a scene suddenly ends with a freeze frame or wondering why the camera seemingly is having an epileptic fit in the middle of a scene or why any number of overtly in-your-face shaky cam sequences are employed one after another? No, as the filmmaker’s job is not to be there but to lead you to one moment to the next without ever making their presence felt. If I am wrong about that assumption then I take back all I’ve said about being aware every few minutes that this was absolutely, positively, without question a Tony Scott film.
