  • FROM THE VAULT: Stan Lee Interview

    I’m a comic fan. Despite what I think of the emaciated, dying industry as it exists today, I’ll forever hold fond memories of my comic book reading childhood.

    And if you’re a child of comic books and Saturday morning TV (like myself), then Stan Lee is instantly recognizable as the creator (with artists such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, & Don Heck) of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the Avengers, Daredevil, X-Men, and many, many more.

    If that list reads like a story out of a Hollywood trade magazine, it’s because all of those properties have gotten – or are about to get – the big screen treatment.

    As with many of my interviews, I got a hankering to chat with one of my childhood idols, and went out and did it. When chatting with Stan, you’re instantly aware that his mutant power is sheer, unbridled enthusiasm. He has been, and remains, a dynamo of boosterism.

    And a fun guy.

    Also, despite his claims that he has a bad memory, many a gem will slip from that forgotten treasure trove if the circumstances are right.

    What follows are two of the interviews I’ve done with Stan, the first of which was while he was having huge success with the internet media start-up Stan Lee Media – which would end the year under a dark legal cloud (through no fault of Lee’s) that would decimate the company.

    The second interview followed about 2 years later, and was mainly me taking a promotional opportunity just to chat with him again.

    And now, without further ado, delightful discourse with the dandily dignified (and definitely dear) Stan Lee…

    KEN PLUME: If you were to sum it up, what was your introduction into the comics industry?

    LEE: Well, I applied for a job in a publishing company… I didn’t even know they published comics. I was fresh out of high school, and I wanted to get into the publishing business, if I could. There was an ad in the paper that said, “Assistant Wanted in a Publishing House.” When I found out that they wanted me to assist in comics, I figured, “Well, I’ll stay here for a little while and get some experience, and then I’ll get out into the real world.” In those days, it just didn’t seem like comics was the kind of field that anybody would want to make a career in. They were the absolute bottom of the cultural totem pole. Nobody had any respect for comic books in those days.

    PLUME: So this is, what, the early 40’s?

    LEE: It was either 1939 or ’40 when I started… I can never figure out which year it was.

    PLUME: You described it as a temporary job…

    LEE: I thought it was at the time…

    PLUME: So what exactly were your aspirations at the time?

    LEE: I just wanted to know, “What do you do in a publishing company?” How do you write… How do you publish? I was an assistant. There were two people there named Joe Simon and Jack Kirby – Joe was sort-of the editor/artist/writer, and Jack was the artist/writer. Joe was the senior member. They were turning out most of the artwork. Then there was the publisher, Martin Goodman… And that was about the only staff that I was involved with. After a while, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby left. I was about 17 years old, and Martin Goodman said to me, “Do you think you can hold down the job of editor until I can find a real person?” When you’re 17, what do you know? I said, “Sure! I can do it!” I think he forgot about me, because I stayed there ever since.

    PLUME: And it was Timely Comics at the time, wasn’t it?

    LEE: Yeah, it was Timely Comics.

    PLUME: What did the position of editor entail at Timely?

    LEE: I was responsible for all the stories, either writing them myself or buying them from other people. In comics – in those days, anyway, and always when I was there – being the editor meant being the art director too, because you can’t just edit the stories without making sure the artwork is done the right way so it enhances the stories… And the stories have to enhance the artwork. They have to go hand in hand. So I was really the editor, the art director, and the head writer.

    PLUME: So you were a jack of all trades?

    LEE: Yeah.

    PLUME: The 40’s and 50’s have always struck me as a very nebulous time at Timely… What exactly were the events that led up to the boom of the early 60’s?

    LEE: Well, what happened was that – until the early 60’s – I did everything the publisher wanted, and his way of publishing was to follow the trends. Whatever was selling at the moment – he would publish books in that genre. For instance, when it looked as though Westerns were hot… we added a lot of Western titles. When Romance stories were doing well… we published a lot of Romance books. Then we did a lot of War magazines. Then Horror. Then Crime. Then the Animated-type of characters… The Terrytoons-type of things. We did Teenage titles. We never were leaders in the field – we always followed the trends. In those days – until the early ’60’s – comic books were very cyclical. There were trends… One year, Romance books would be hot… One year it would be Horror stories…whatever… and we just went along. We were like a production house – we just kept producing whatever was hot at the moment.

    All during that time, I kept wanting to quit, because I felt, “There’s no future in this.” I’d say to my wife, “I’m going to give it another few weeks and then I’m getting out of there.” Then I’d get a raise, or we’d add some new magazines, and I’d get a little bit interested in them and I’d figure, “Well, I’ll stay a little bit longer.” Somehow, the years just kept falling away and, before I knew it, I’d been there for 20 years.

    It was now 1960. By now, I really wanted to leave, because one edict that my publisher had was that the stories had to be geared towards young readers – or unintelligent older readers. We weren’t supposed to use words of more than two syllables, and we had to have simple plots – no continuing stories, because he felt our readers weren’t smart enough to remember from month to month where they had left off. It was really boring.

    In either ’60 or ’61 I said to my wife, Joanie, “This time, I’m really going to leave.” She said, “Well, if you’re determined to leave, why don’t you first do a book or two the way you wanted to, no matter what the publisher says? The worst that can happen is that he’ll fire you. You won’t care, because you want to leave, but at least you’ll get it out of your system.”

    It happened that – at that time- my publisher had been playing golf with Jack Liebowitz, who was one of the bosses at DC comics – which in those days was called National Comics. Jack Liebowitz had told him that he had a magazine called The Justice League, which was selling very well, and it was a group of super-heroes. So Martin came to me and he said, “Hey Stan… Why don’t you do a group of super-heroes?” Again, this business of following the trend.

    I figured, “All right, but this time I’m going to do it my way.” Instead of the typical heroes that have secret identities and nobody knows who they are, I did The Fantastic Four – where everybody knew who they were. And instead of the girlfriend who doesn’t know that the hero is so-and-so, I had the girl in the series actually be engaged to the hero, and she was a heroine – she was part of the team. Instead of the typical junior sidekick, I had a teenager who was also the brother of the heroine – and the hero would soon marry the heroine, so they would be brothers-in-law. The fourth member of the team was a monstrous-looking guy, called The Thing, which was not a typical super-hero type in those days. I also tried to give them fairly realistic dialogue, and I didn’t have them wear colorful costumes. I always felt that if I had super-power, I wouldn’t immediately run out to the store and buy a costume. Somehow or other, the book caught on. We had never gotten fan mail up until that point… Sometimes we might get a letter from a reader that would say, “I bought one of your books and there’s a staple missing. I want my dime back.” And that was it. We’d put that up on the bulletin board and say, “Look! A fan letter!” Suddenly, with The Fantastic Four, we really started getting mail… “We like this… We don’t like that…. We want to see more of this.” That was exciting! So I didn’t quit. Then we did The Hulk, and that did pretty well…. And then the rest is history.

The stunning quality of the film itself remains intact as an unassailable classic. Bonus materials include a feature-length making-of documentary, an audio commentary, interviews, featurettes, a look at Universal’s restoration process, and more.

    If Monty Python defined British comedy for the 70’s, it was Channel 4’s inaugural comedy show The Comic Strip Presents that set the tone for the strident comedy of the 1980’s. Featuring the likes of Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Alexei Sayle, and Robbie Coltrane, the short comedic films are absolute gems and required viewing for anyone who considers themselves a comedy lover. The Complete Comic Strip Presents Collection (E1, Not Rated, DVD-$89.98 SRP) contains all 5 seasons, plus a hefty clutch of bonus materials.

    I’m a massive fan of the legendary Marvel Comics series Fantastic Four, which means I dove into the exquisite history of the book’s creation and golden age – Lee & Kirby: The Wonder Years (Twomorrows, $19.95) – with gusto. Well-researched and well-presented, author Mark Alexander makes the brilliant creative alchemy and circumstance between Stan Lee & Jack Kirby come alive.

    While I applaud Paramount for dipping into the coffers to take the time and considerable cost necessary to high definition upgrade (via original film negative and effects materials) the whole series, I wish the Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level (Paramount, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$22.99 SRP) sampler disc did not feature a trio of regrettable episodes to showcase all of the incredible work being done. I certainly would not have picked “Encounter At Farpoint”, “Sins Of The Father”, and “The Inner Light”, though I can understand wanting to take the worst and most dated – the pilot – and show off the new process, but it also is a reminder of just how plodding and awkward that pilot was… Even if it does look and sound better than you can possible believe now.

    As far as thought-provoking science fiction flicks go, In Time (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) is an interesting enough watch, with a concept that finds humanity immortal from the age of 25 – but with all currency in the form of time from their lives. The rich can live forever. The poor die when they’ve spent all of their time. And when a poor person (Justin Timberlake) upsets the system? You get this movie. Bonus materials include deleted/extended scenes and a featurette.

    The Blu-Ray pact between Miramax and Lionsgate brings another pair of catalogue releases to tick off your waitlist – the Academy Award sweeper The English Patient (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.99 SRP) & the Civil War epic Cold Mountain (Lionsgate, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.99 SRP), Bonus materials include audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, and more.

    If you’re going to revisit a beloved horror film, you should probably at least try to be up to the challenge. Sadly, the new “prequel” to John Carpenter’s The Thing (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP) doesn’t quite realize the subtlety and realism that made the horror really pack a punch, instead opting for unconvincing CGI and too much bluster. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, and more.

    You know me – I simply adore Doctor Who. And because I’m a geek, that means I also love the action figures based on the almost 50 years of the series being produced by Underground Toys. I’ll be featuring some pretty damned spiffy sets in the near future, but consider this one a celebration of all of the figures they’ve been producing recently from the more recent Matt Smith 11th Doctor era of the show. All figures retail for around $15-$20, depending on where you find them. You’ve got the Corroded Cyberman with Chest Damage, Corroded Cyberman with Face Damage, & a clutch of Cybermats from “Closing Time”. Or go even creepier with a Silent with Closed Mouth or a creepier Silent with Open Mouth. Okay, maybe creepiest of all is the Peg Soldier from “Night Terrors”. Ah, but that’s enough baddies. Let’s move on to River Song, and her mind-controlled assassin mode as The Astronaut. Or how about darling little Amelia Pond. There’s the TARDIS personified as Idris from “The Doctor’s Wife” And how about we wrap things up with a whole bunch of 11th Doctor variants – the Flesh Doctor, the 11th Doctor with Beard, the 11th Doctor with Cowboy Hat, AND FINALLY The 11th Doctor with a brand new (and much more accurate the Matt Smith) head sculpt. Aren’t they all great?

    The brilliance of Sideshow’s Premium Format Gollum ($299) is that, considering what a small figure our ring-obsessed degenerate Hobbit would be in the 1/4-scale, they’ve decided to give us the ability to display to complete versions – the ring-clutching and glowering Gollum and the triumphant Smeagol, both of which are perched atop a tall rock. Ah, but even when you’re not displaying a version in its full figure glory, they’ve provided a separate base which allows you to display the alternate version as a bust, complete with its own swappable nameplate. How cool is that?

    You only have to view the unedited, unadulterated, original episodes of the UK’s Top Gear to understand why the idea of making an “American edition” and jettisoning hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond is such a pig-ignorant idea. For one, it’s their interplay that makes the show – not the car talk. Secondly, it’s foolish to think it doesn’t translate to the US in its original form – because it does. Which is all to say that I highly recommend you pick up Top Gear 10: The Complete 10th Season (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) and see my case being made before your eyes.

    Sometimes, life is about the simple pleasures. Sometimes, those simple pleasures have been shrunk down and conveniently made USB-powered. Such is the case with the USB Plasma Ball ($12.99), which is 6″ of Tesla-crafted joy. Stare into it, and you’ll swear you actually see… A plasma ball. A really, really cool plasma ball.

    DC continues to deliver top-notch collections of the post-Marvel work Jack Kirby did for the company in the 70’s with the release of his ragtag group of war heroes fighting at the height of World War II, The Losers (DC Comics, $39.99 SRP). When it comes to archive editions, DC is the company setting the bar.

    Unlike most of Ron Howard’s filmic output, which often suffers from being uninspired and drab, I thought his adaptation of (Universal, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP) succeeded in translating the energy and performances that made the stage version such a success to the big screen. Maybe that’s because it takes a lot of effort to stamp out the skill that Michael Sheen and Frank Langella bring to their performances as David Frost and the disgraced but defiant Richard Nixon. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, a look at the Nixon Library, and footage from the actual Frost/Nixon interviews. A Frost/NixonBlu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is also available, with additional footage of the original interviews and background information.

    If you were to take the wonderfully candid wrestling documentary Beyond The Mat and fictionalize it, you’d have the story of broken down wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a former superstar up against the ropes in The Wrestler (Fox, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP). Physical and emotional pain etched across his haggard face, Mickey Rourke turns in a stunning performance as a guy who feels he’s gotten one more good match left in him, both inside and outside the ring. Bonus materials include a documentary spotlighting actual wrestlers, a roundtable discussion with same, and a Bruce Springsteen music video. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    Although the bulk of it doesn’t really hold up (the 90’s references shoveled throughout certainly make it less than timeless), I still have some affection for the episodes featured in Tiny Toon Adventures: Season 1 Volume 2 (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$44.98 SRP). Of special note, however, is that this set does contain the still-wonderful music videos episode, which featured many kids’ first introduction to the work of They Might Be Giants.

    The second season of the ADD Freakazoid (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP) hits DVD, with all 11 episodes spread across two discs. Bonus features include commentaries, a featurette, and an archival tape of composer Richard Stone at work.

    Ian McKellen is truly incredible in the recent RSC production of King Lear (PBS, Not Rated, DVD-$24.99 SRP) – so much so that I’d say it’s a must see. So get it and do so. The disc also contains a bonus interview with McKellen.

    Yes, I admit it – I watch iCarly (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP). Don’t get me wrong – I don’t watch it of my own volition. I watch it alongside my nephew, as its often sandwiched between episodes of Spongebob. And as kiddie fare go, it’s a decent show – funny and well-acted. So there. The second volume of the show’s first season contains 12 episodes and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Peter Bogdanovich fans can get not only the director’s cut of his Last Picture Show, but also the new-to-DVD release of Nickelodeon in a two-disc Director’s Choice: Nickelodeon/The Last Picture Show double feature (Sony, Rated PG/R, DVD-$24.96 SRP). Bonus features include commentaries on both films, plus interviews & featurettes on Picture Show.

    I’m no fan of rap and only marginally aware of the various rifts within its community, but I found Notorious (Fox, Rated R, DVD-$34.98 SRP) – about the life of The Notorious B.I.G. – to be a fascinating watch simply for the wonderful young actor filling the title role, Jamal Woolard. Bonus features include audio commentaries, making-of featurettes, concert footage, and deleted scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available with identical bonus materials.

    I thought Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller’s adaptation of Miller’s Sin City (Miramax, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) was fine for what it was, but its slavish visual adherence to the original art grew tiresome after a bit, and the gimmick became more important than the characters or the story itself. Shame, really, because what could have been an interesting piece of neo-noir has instead become this generation’s Dick Tracy. The new Blu-Ray edition treats those gimmicky visuals nicely, and ports over the bonus materials from the standard DVD, plus an additional exclusive Cine-Explore feature.

    Having moved on from saving the planet, Elmo is back to promote literacy with Sesame Street: Elmo And The Bookaneers (Genius, Not Rated, DVD-$14.93 SRP), about pirates who love to read. What’s more important, though, is its special guest – Tina Fey. Yes… Tina Fey.

    If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the return of hillbilly squids, then you’re prayers are answered with the arrival of Squidbillies: Volume 2 (Adult Swim, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP). The 2-disc set features 20 episodes, plus oodles of bonus materials including featurettes, art, music, and more.

    Ewing Oil was left a shambles at the end of season 10, but the eleventh season of Dallas (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) finds J.R. down but certainly not out, as he claws his way back from disaster, even if it means stepping on a few people along the way. The 3-disc set contains all 30 episodes.

    If the leaked Wolverine workprint hasn’t extinguished your enthusiasm for all things hairy mutant, also being released is the animated Wolverine & The X-Men: Heroes Return Trilogy (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP), I’m not entirely sure I understand the story they’re trying to tell, but the animation and character design is decent (even though the supposed-to-be-short Wolverine is now about 6’4). Bonus features include commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    We’ve made it to the halfway mark with the release of Hawaii Five-O‘s sixth season (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP). Steve Garrett and his crack team are back on the sunny streets of the Pacific jewel in this 6-disc set, featuring all 24 episodes plus the original promos.

    The Stuart Little animated series is an innocuous, affable affair that managed to hold my nephews’ attention (no small feat). Two volumes are now available – A Little Family Fun! & Going For The Gold! (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$12.99 SRP each). Each disc contains a quartet of adventures.

    The rich socialites of Knots Landing return for the complete second season (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP), which features a very special visit from not only Bobby Ewing, but J.R. himself. The 4-disc set features all 18 episodes.

  • Weekend Shopping Guide 6/6/08: Blue & Gold Are Go!

In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the Quick Stop Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

    Even though they’ve done just about everything possible (including throwing the kitchen sink at it) to tear down the beloved characters and stories of their relaunch, time and unfortunate editorial machinations have only made the Keith Giffen/J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire run of Justice League International look all the more enjoyable by comparison. Ignore all of that Uber Final Infinite Crisis of Something Or Another business and pick up the first volume of Justice League International (DC Comics, $24.99 SRP), which collects the first 7 issues. You won’t regret it.

    Ah, but I will say this – thank jebus for the relaunched Booster Gold. Slowly but surely, the series has been fixing the bastardizations wreaked in the past few years within the DC universe, and reintroducing some of the FUN and ENJOYMENT that’s been missing in comics today. Let me say, unequivocally, grab the first collection, Booster Gold: 52 Pick-Up (DC Comics, $24.99 SRP), and support a creative team that are proving that reading comics doesn’t have to be a depressive chore.

    Even though I think there were diminishing returns following the spectacular, pre-franchise outing and its first sequel, it’s still welcome to have brand new, deluxe special editions of the five films featuring Detective Harry Callahan – aka “Dirty Harry”. Dirty Harry (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$20.99 SRP) established everything you needed to know about the take-no-prisoners cop, and the new 2-disc special edition features an audio commentary, retrospective featurettes on the film, a spotlight on Clint Eastwood, and more. Magnum Force (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$14.98 SRP) was one of those rare sequels that built on the original, with a powerful screenplay by John Milius and Michael Cimino. Milius returns for an audio commentary, which sits alongside a pair of featurettes that focus on both the politics of Dirty Harry, and compare him to the Warner crimebusters of yesteryear. The rest of the series – The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$14.98 SRP each) are watchable outings, but don’t live up to the heights of the first two flicks. The remaining films have all got commentaries and brand new featurettes.

    You know a major feature film is fast-approaching when the studio starts releasing the classic material to DVD, and such is the case with the rapid fire release of both the 3rd and 4th season of the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno Incredible Hulk (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP each). Bonus features include an audio commentary on the episode “Prometheus”, a pair of featurettes, and a look at the upcoming film.

    If it had an arc like the plant its characters peddle, than season 3 of Weeds (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) is when events start to harsh the mellow of suburban single mother/pot dealer Nancy Botwin’s local business. Everything begins to go south when Nancy’s small-time operation begins to turn into a mini-empire – with all of the potentially dangerous baggage that brings. The 3-disc set features all 15 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, montages, and a spotlight on Randy Newman.

    If Indiana Jones has made you interested in finding out what real archeology is all about, I can recommend no more enjoyable series than Time Team – the Brit show which performs digs across the UK, and is hosted by Blackadder‘s Tony Robinson. A perfect introduction to the series is The Very Best Of Time Team Digs (Channel 4, Region 2, Not Rated, DVD-£24.99 SRP), which features a clutch of the team’s favorite digs, plus bonus materials.

    This weekend, the space nerd in me will be delighting in reading Floating To Space: The Airship To Orbit Program (Apogee Books, $27.95 SRP). It’s basically a look at the various schemes to use… well, essentially balloons, in order to make a much smarter, cheaper ascent to space. The book also contains a DVD of some beautiful, amazing test footage.

    It’s always a pleasant surprise when a series whose release has been pleaded for by fans gets put out on DVD, and it’s even more exciting when there are actually a decent amount of bonus materials as well. Such is the case with the complete first season of Mannix (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP), starring Mike Connors as PI Joe Mannix. The 6-disc set features all 24 episodes, plus audio commentaries, episode intros, Mike Connors on The Mike Douglas Show, the sales presentation, TV Land promos, the 1967 CBS Fall promo, and more.

    Hopefully, you’ve already picked up all four volumes of the Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus, as they should be required reading for any comic fan. If you’ve already wisely purchased those, you’ll also want to get Jack Kirby’s OMAC: One Man Army Corps (DC Comics, $ S24.99 SRP), which collects all 8 issues of Kirby’s fascinatingly bizarre tales of Buddy Blank’s super-powered, crime-fighting alter-ego in the “near-future”.

    You know, few shows are feature characters as relentlessly flawed as Rescue Me (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$49.95 SRP) – and I probably wouldn’t have it any other way. The fourth season features Tommy (Denis Leary) fighting charges of arson and insurance fraud and facing questions of paternity on his new baby – and then there’s everyone else’s problems. The 4-disc set sports all 13 episodes, plus featurettes, deleted scenes, minisodes, a gag reel, and more.

    Although it never lit up audiences, you can at least say that the TV series based on Stephen King’s The Dead Zone (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$34.99 SRP) was a solid show throughout its run. That all wraps up with the release of the sixth and final season, as we come to the end of Johnny Smith’s odd journey. The 3 disc set features all 13 episodes, plus a quartet of audio commentaries, and a pair of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Although it quickly disappeared from screens when it hit in the mid-90’s, the attempted re-launch of Get Smart (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP) – which brought Don Adams and Barbara Feldon back and gave them a bumbling secret agent son, played by Andy Dick – missed it by *that* much. Given some time to develop, it could have probably evolved into a decent series, but as it stands, it never seemed to find its footing.

    Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt’s Animation Show (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP) returns for a third volume, featuring another 16 animated shorts and an introduction from Beavis & Butt-head. There’s also interview with the artists, to boot.

    It’s goofy and good-natured and well within his safe zone, but there’s something undeniably tired about Will Ferrell’s latest loveable boob pic Semi-Pro (New Line, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP). The flick finds Ferrell back in the 70’s, this time starring as a semi-pro basketball star who’s local celeb status is threatened by an impending NBA merger. What will he do? And will it be funny? Marginally so. The 2-disc unrated edition sports behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, a music video, trailers, and more.

    Continuing their spotlights on great British actresses (having already dedicated sets to Judi Dench and Helen Mirren), we now get Maggie Smith At The BBC (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). The 3-disc set contains The Merchant Of Venice, The Millionairess, Suddenly Last Summer, and Bed Among The Lentils. Bonus materials include a newly-produced tribute, a pair of archival interviews with Ms. Smith, and the radio play The Country Wife.

    Give it enough time and even the most marginal of films enters into the realm of classic, and it’s with that in mind that we’ve now got a special collector’s edition of City Slickers (MGM, Rated PG-13, DVD-$14.98 SRP). This uber-edition features an audio commentary, retrospective featurettes, and deleted scenes.

    The least effective officers of the California Highway Patrol are back on their bikes in the second season of ChiPs (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP). The 4-disc (sadly double-sided) set features all 22 episodes, including a Halloween outing and an Evel Knievel pastiche. Bonus features include an interview with Erik Estrada and a “best of seasons 1 & 2” feature-length clip episode.

    The latest release from The Weinstein Company’s high-falutin’ “Miriam Collection” is the tragic tale of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, Control (Genius, Rated R, DVD-$28.95 SRP). Sam Riley is compelling as Curtis, with Samantha Morton in a turn as his teenage bride (upon whose memoir the film is based). Bonus features include an audio commentary, a making-of, music videos, extended performances, and more.

    With a powerhouse producing team – including Ridley and Tony Scott – I expected quite a bit from the new mini-series based on Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP). While it’s perfectly serviceable and remained relatively faithful to Crichton’s tale of humanity’s effort to control the deadly spread of an interstellar virus, it lacked the energy and verve I’ve come to expect from the Brothers Scott. Sad, Really, because there remains a fantastic adaptation to be made from it. Bonus features include an audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and galleries.

    I tried – jebus how I tried – to find something funny in Meet The Spartans (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP), but I couldn’t. As parodies go, it makes Airplane! look like Shakespeare. The unrated edition features an audio commentary, featurettes, a gag reel, and trailers.

    As we rapidly approach the release of Dark Knight, the Batman merchandising machine is kicking into high gear. That’s all well-and-good, but my tastes skew more towards pop culture nostalgia, so it was with particular delight that I greeted Mattel/Hot Wheel’s) production of a 1:18-scale Batmobile from the 1966 TV show (Mattel, $19.98 SRP). Nicely detailed and pretty damn snazzy, it’s a must-have for the shelf of an self-respecting fanboy. If you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, though, a 1:50-scale version is also available in a line which also include the Batcycle, the animated series Batmobile, and the Batmobile from the comics (Mattel, $6.98 SRP each).
