    I’m still not sold on the exaggerated realistic character design they chose for Herge’s famous characters, but there’s enough verve and energy to make Spielberg & Jackson’s The Adventures Of Tintin (Paramount, Rated PG, 3D Blu-Ray-$54.99 SRP) a fun watch, careening from one set piece to the next in a similar vein to Spielberg’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark. And really, the only way to watch this at home, if you have the capability, is in 3D – they did a great job of making the environments immersive, particularly during the big chase near the end. Bonus materials include making-of featurettes and much more.

    If you want a nice and easy geek-friendly LEGO set for kids who might not have the skill or patience to tackle the larger sets, the LEGO Star Wars Droid Escape ($19.99) features C-3PO and R2-D2 with their Tantive IV escape pod plus a few Stormtroopers and a Speeder Bike to pursue them with.

    Arrested development and the delusion that goes with it is front and center in Young Adult (Paramount, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) when writer & one-time prom queen Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) heads back home and determines recapturing her married high school boyfriend is the way to relive a past long gone. Theron is brilliant, but she’s matched by Patton Oswalt, a fellow classmate who slaps her with the reality stick. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and more.

    It seems every month is a holiday for fans of the Doctor’s classic adventures as we get not only a special edition of the 10th anniversary special with Doctor Who: The Three Doctors (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP), but also a new special edition of 4th Doctor Tom Baker’s Doctor Who: The Robots Of Death (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$18.99 SRP). Both are real crackers, and are loaded with the usual clutch of commentaries, featurettes, knick-knacks, rarities, and more.

    Ah, but that’s not all of the new classic Who you’re getting this week! Oh no, no, no! There’s also a newly restored special edition of Patrick Troughton’s tin-plated tussle with cyberdoom in Doctor Who: The Tomb Of The Cybermen (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$34.98 SRP) and 4th Doctor Tom Baker’s first encounter with savage companion Leela in Doctor Who: The Face Of Evil (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP). Again, there’s loads and loads of great bonus material for both. So is THAT enough new Who for you?

    Anyone who has had a loss that is at the same time sudden yet lingering will understand the power of a film like The Descendants (Fox, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), that even for its twist and the light it casts on the character who has gone into a coma after an accident, it still makes you feel for the lurch it places family her into. I really don’t want to give away much about the film, but suffice it to say she leaves a husband (George Clooney) and two troubled daughters to pick up the pieces. Just see it. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, interviews, and more.

    It was only a matter of time before Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation Of Christ (Criterion, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) made it to the high definition realm in a beautifully put together edition, and it should come as no real surprise that it’s from the fine folks at Criterion. Not only does the picture and sound get a healthy bump, but there’s also an audio commentary, interview with Peter Gabriel, location footage, photos, and more.

    It’s always a delight to get new Wallace & Gromit material, even if it’s in the form of interstitial around a spotlight on r3eal life gadgets and contraptions in Wallace & Gromit’s World Of Invention (Lionsgate, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$14.99 SRP), a 6-part series that does just that.

    The fine folks at Rifftrax have released a brand new pair of cinematic bombs made wonderfully hilarious – the dime store creature feature The Crater Lake Monster (Legend, Not Rated, DVD-$9.95 SRP) and the nickel store alien flick The Galaxy Invader (Legend, Not Rated, DVD-$9.95 SRP). Should you get both? Yes. You should get both. Right now.

    You know another installment of a film franchise is in the offing when the back-catalogue is dusted off for release, so it should come as little surprise that the forthcoming American Reunion brings the Blu-Ray debut of American Pie, American Pie 2, and American Wedding (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$19.98 SRP each). All 3 carry over all of the previous DVD special features, as well as adding a look at the upcoming sequel.

    They’re certainly not up to the quality of the original, but there’s enough charm and storytelling competence to make both The Lion King 1 1/2 & The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP each) decent viewing, and will probably hold the attention of most kids. Both have just gotten a full high definition release, sporting featurettes, deleted scenes, music videos, and more.

    The Warner Archive Collection has dug up a pair of Jim Brown rarities from the 70’s for your viewing pleasure. Tick Tick Tick (Warner Bros., Rated G, DVD-$19.95) finds brown starring as a southern sheriff caught in the middle of a breakdown in race relations, while The Slams (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$19.95) as a jailed criminal who needs to overcome quite a few obstacles to go over the wall and try and recover a hidden stash of cash before the demolition of its hiding place.

    Yeah, I’m not entirely sure anyone is supposed to understand what’s going on in Tarsem’s big Greek mythology epic Immortals (Fox, Rated R, 3D Blu-Ray-$49.99 SRP), but it is a captivatingly beautiful thing to look at in 3D, particularly any scene where the gods are doing battle. It’s a crazy flick, but definitely worth a look-see. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, an alternate opening, and alternate endings.

    Director Ralph Bakshi’s animated films are an acquired taste, and one I never have acquired. I can certainly see his passion, but the movies don’t speak to me. But there are plenty of people who have a special place in their heart for his fantasy film Wizards (Fox, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP), which arrives in high definition for a special 35th anniversary edition containing an audio commentary, featurettes, a TV spot, a gallery, and trailers.

    As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the legendary maritime disaster, it’s perfectly understandable that the History Channel is collecting together a trio of their best documentaries on the subject into Titanic: The Complete Story (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP). The documentaries in question are Death Of A Dream, The Legend Lives On, and Titanic’s Achilles Heel.

    Michelle Williams certainly deserved her Oscar nomination for her turn as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn (Anchor Bay, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which focuses on the memoir of Colin Clark, who as a 23-year-old 3rd assistant director formed a special relationship with the very fragile superstar while she was in London filming The Prince And The Showgirl with the Sire Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). A lovely little flick.

    I’m not exactly sure what they were thinking with the overly-slick, utterly baffling new take on The Three Musketeers (Summit, Rated PG-13, 3D Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP). Well, I do know – they were trying to capture the same teenage audience that flocked to Twilight. And for them, this is probably a lovely bit of fluff. The 3-D edition contains an audio commentary and deleted scenes.

    Do you like penguins? Do you like them dancing? Do you like them talking with the voices of Elijah Wood and Robin Williams while they’re dancing? Did you like all of this when it was in an animated movie called Happy Feet? Then you’ll like the equally ingratiating Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros., Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP), as Wood’s Mumble returns with a son in tow. Bonus materials include a clutch of featurettes and more.

    For Come Fly With Me (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP) Matt Lucas and David Walliams have followed up their immensely successful run on Little Britain with a brand new series that weaves what are still essentially just recurring character sketches but with the conceit that all of these characters work and revolve around an airport, from ground crews to the rich airline owner. The set features all 6 episodes plus a behind-the-scenes documentary.

    How do you compress 13.7 million years of Earth’s existence into one concise special? Seems like a tall task, but it’s one History Of the World In Two Hours (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 SRP) attempts to do, from the stellar formation of the planet all the way up to today.

    It’s still not my bag, but for those that enjoy Adult Swim’s Superjail (Adult Swim, Not Rated, DVD-$19.97 SRP), the complete second season set contains all 10 episodes plus a clutch of bonus materials.

    In the Tom Baker 4th Doctor story “City Of Death”, our traveling Time Lord encounters an art dealer selling actual originals of the Mona Lisa to fund his time experiments. The seemingly-debonair Count Scarlioni played by Julian Glover, is actually a time-splintered alien named Scaroth, who is eager to prevent the destruction of his ship over primeval Earth – an event that not only flung him through time, but also happened to have jump-started life on Earth. So yes, the Doctor must stop him. The City Of Death Collector’s Set (Underground Toys, $38.99 SRP) contains the Doctor and Cunt Scarlioni – who also has a swappable Scarloth head. Oh, and there’s also a Mona Lisa. Just don’t try to sell it.

    If The Departed was Scorsese’s attempt to get a hold on Boston, Ben Affleck’s The Town (Warner Bros., Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is a homegrown take on the intricate web of Goodfellas, right down to a heist that ultimately tears everyone apart. Sure, it’s a simplistic view of a remarkably good flick, but why don’t you give it a spin for yourself? Bonus materials include an audio commentary (on both the theatrical and extended cuts) and a clutch of featurettes.

    Write all of those holiday gift thank you letters in the most beautiful and pretentious way possible with the Old Tyme Writing Set ($24.99). You get a feather, a wooden pen handle, seven interchangeable nibs, and a bottle of ink.

    I greatly enjoyed the first Nanny McPhee movie, and hoped against hope that Emma Thompson would be able to maintain the same level of Poppins-esque whimsy, heart, and humor she captured so well. Thankfully, Nanny McPhee Returns (Universal, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP) more than maintains it, and is an equal standalone bit of fun in its own right, as McPhee tackles the unruly household situation in WWII Britain. Do check it out. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, and deleted scenes.

    Going in, I didn’t know quite what to expect from The Other Guys (Sony, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP), but I was hoping it would be just another boring entry into the long line of buddy cop movies. Well, color me pleasantly surprised, because it managed to entertain me quite a bit with its story of bottom-tier NYPD partners – Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg – who get a shot at glory after the precincts top cops are die in the line of duty. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted/extended scenes, featurettes, a music video, gag reel, and more.

    It’s always nice to see a new collection of Groucho material, even if it’s all culled from the public domain – that doesn’t mean it’s something I’ve seen. Groucho Marx: TV Classics (Synergy, Not Rated, DVD-$24.95 SRP) contains 16 You Bet Your Life episodes, a pair of Groucho-hosted episodes of The Hollywood Palace, and a few other miscellaneous bits and bobs.

    If you want a prime example of exactly how NOT to capitalize on public knowledge of a pop culture fixture for a big screen relaunch, look no further than the lifeless, drab take on The A-Team (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which manages to suck every bit of likeability out of this ragtag group of ex-special forces attempting to clear their name. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

    Fans who seemingly didn’t watch the poor-rated show when it was on can now partake of the final clutch of episodes via Caprica: Season 1.5 (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), including the still-unaired final few.     If your kids liked Happy Feet and really want to see a movie about owls, then Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole (Warner Bros., Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is the film for you. You want to see good owls fight evil owls, right? Bonus materials include featurettes and galleries – and one bonus that makes picking up the disc worth it… A new Road Runner cartoon.

    It’s with a bit of a whimper that the once-riveting 24 (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) came to a close in its 8th and final season, having long since become a hyper version of itself. The 6-disc set contains all 24 episodes, plus commentaries, featurettes, and deleted scenes.

    I must admit, I do so love an old school, cat & mouse thriller of the kind that Hitchcock and Carol Reed would make, and that’s exactly the type of methodically taut pace found in The American (Universal, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.98 SRP), in which George Clooney plays a mercenary who can’t escape his past. Just watch the damn thing. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, a featurette, and deleted scenes.

    It ended before its time, but fans can now pick up the 3rd and final volume of John Byrne’s Next Men: The Premiere Collection (IDW, $50.00 SRP), which collects issues 21-30 in an oversized, hardbound presentation. Oh, and that whole “ended before its time” thing? IDW has convinced Byrne to bring the series back. Huzzah!

    Nobody does fantasy drinking quite like the inhabitants of Middle Earth, and you can booze up in the same style with the Lord Of The Rings Etched Bar-Ware, allowing you to get a pair of pint glasses etched with the logos from either the Prancing Pony or the Green Dragon ($29.99), or a single large stein etched with same ($29.99). Now you too can drink a dwarf under the table.

    If you’re like me, you have far too many wires and plugs in your life. From cell phones to mp3 players and gaming systems and bluetooth headsets… There’s a seemingly endless list of devices in need of charging or communication. And if you’ve ever tried to travel with that mess of cables, you know how frustrating it can be. Eager to streamline things a bit, I went hunting for a solution – And found the fine folks at Gomadic. Gomadic has designed a system of standardizes chargers that are universal for nearly every device, meaning one wire for everything. How do they manage this? By introducing an exchangeable tip system.     Essentially a combination of both the rated & unrated editions in one disc, the Hangover: Extreme Edition (Warner Bros., Rated R, Bly-Ray-$35.99 SRP) also adds a CD sampler and an album of wedding photos, while retaining he same bonus features as the previous releases.

    Another catalogue title makes its way to high definition with the release of David O. Russell’s Three Kings (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$24.98 SRP), whose political satire on the first Gulf War is even more powerful today. Bonus materials include a pair of audio commentaries, additional scenes, featurettes, and interviews.

    While it’s not the American adventures of Derren Brown I would hope for, the second season of The Mentalist (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) is still a fun little procedural, starring Simon Baker as the titular former “psychic” aiding the California Bureau of Investigation. The 5-disc set contains all 23 episodes, plus featurettes and deleted scenes.

    It came and went at the box office with barely a gurgle, but the big screen outing for DC Comics’ Old West-ern vigilante Jonah Hex (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$35.98 SRP) is an ok little flick, carried along mostly by Josh Brolin’s take on the grizzled bounty hunter. Bonus materials include a pair of featurettes and deleted scenes.

    Supplement your recent Blu-Ray Beauty And The Beast purchase with the definitive making-of book – Tale As Old As Time: The Art And Making Of Beauty And The Beast (Disney Editions, $40.00 SRP). As you can probably guess, the copiously illustrated tome presents an inside look at the film’s creation.

    Flawed in conception and just plain boring in execution, it’s little wonder that Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse (Fox, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$59.99 SRP) only made it 2 seasons, the second of which makes its home video debut featuring all 13 episodes, plus audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and outtakes.

    When reading Walt Disney: His Life In Pictures (Disney Press, $14.95 SRP), which is a pretty quick read, but loaded with amazing, often rare photos, I’m reminded of those famous people biographies one would find in an elementary school library. It’s great for kids, but animation buffs and Disney fans will want it for the photos.

    Criterion has always done right by Ingmar Bergman, and they continue to treat his catalogue with exquisite gloves in this era of high definition. Bergman’s The Magician (Criterion, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.95 SRP) looks and sounds beautiful, and features a 1967 video interview with Bergman, a rare audio interview, and a massive supplementary booklet.

    Mill Creek has been steadily releasing a slew of budget-priced titles that are must-have for someone who wants a quick, cheap way to load up on TV series, documentaries, or cult films. On the cult side of things, you can get the 16-film Fists Of Vengeance: Martial Arts Collection (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP), the 12-film Ten Thousand Ways To Die: The Spaghetti Western Collection (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP), and the 12-film Rare Cult Cinema (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP). For documentaries, you’ve got the series Birth Of Flight: A History Of Civil Aviation (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP) and Native America: Voices From The Land (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$9.98 SRP).

    Take an okay 80’s cult film (The Lost Boys) and make a wrongheaded attempt to catch lightening in a direct-to-video bottle and you get an awkward sequel like Lost Boys: The Thirst (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) which brings the vampire-fighting Frog Brothers back for another round. Bonus features include a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    As sci-fi horror goes, Splice (Warner Bros., Rated R, Blu-Ray-$35.99 SRP) is engaging enough to at least keep your interest, with all of its Frankenstein-like creation of life that goes awry, but the real reason to watch is the performance of Sarah Polley as the creature’s laboratory “mother”. Bonus features are limited to a behind-the-scenes featurette.

    To get even one show to premiere in any given season that proves an instant favorite is a sad rarity. That there were two shows last season which swept me away is unprecedented, and should be seen as a sign of something. What, I have no idea. One of those shows is Community (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$39.95 SRP), which has introduced a level of meta-surrealism and true ensemble storytelling not seen since the heyday of Newsradio. The first season set contains audio commentaries on ever episode, nearly an hour of outtakes, featurettes, and more. If you’ve yet to see this series, what in the hell are you waiting for?

    Yeah yeah yeah, I know what you’re thinking. “What am I thinking?”, you say… Well, I knew that you’d say that, too. You’re thinking, “Why would I ever need a flashlight that looks like The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver?” Well, you don’t really. But still, it is kinda nifty to have a Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver LED Flashlight ($12.99). It just is.

    The other show that grabbed me by the collar is Modern Family (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP) – Which I will state, in no uncertain terms, is the finest family sitcom ever produced. Hyperbolic? A little bit, but it really has managed to walk a tightrope of being grounded enough to be relatable but far enough out there to be exciting. And it’s brought Ed O’Neill back to comedy. We must celebrate that. The box set includes deleted scenes, featurettes, and a gag reel. A Blu-Ray edition ($69.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    While some fell out of love with the 3rd season of 30 Rock (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP), I’m still firmly in love with it, though. The 3-disc set contains extended versions of a pair of episodes, plus audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and a photo gallery.

    There have been a few attempts in the past to collect his incredible body of work in book form, but the one to finally make it out of the gates is The Art Of Drew Struzan (Titan Books, $34.95 SRP). Sadly, it’s not as comprehensive as some of the prior efforts, but it’s still a large, lovely overview of one of the most recognizable film poster illustrators…well, ever… whose work can be seen on everything from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Blade Runner to Back To The Future and An American Tail. The book is narrated by Struzan, who takes you on a guided tour of the pieces and the process behind them.

    HBO’s Jonathan Ames created/inspired sitcom Bored To Death (HBO, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) is just as precious and cute as you would expect a project borne of Brooklyn hipster intellectualism to be, equal parts entertaining and painfully cooler than thou. The 2-disc set contains all 8 first season episodes, plus audio commentaries and featurettes. A Blu-Ray edition ($49.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus features.

    I can’t watch the ludicrously over-the-top Spartacus: Blood And Sand (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$59.97 SRP) without immediately thinking of Charlie Brooker’s brilliant take down of it, and illumination of its aforementioned ludicrous over-the-top nature. I mean, the blood isn’t just blood – it’s BLOOD. And lots of it. And maimings, and mutilations, and copious amounts of awkward nudity. Bonus features include audio commentaries and a clutch of featurettes. A Blu-Ray edition ($79.97 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    I think I may be tiring of How I Met Your Mother (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$38.98 SRP) and its increasingly off-putting avoidance of the its titular quest. For the first few seasons it was a cute mystery, but now we can’t invest on anything because there’s always a sense of an impending bait and switch. The 5th season set contains all 24 episodes, plus featurettes, music videos, and gag reel.

    Taking an in-depth study of middle America – Munice, Indiana, to be exact – in 1982, the 6-part documentary series Middletown (Icarus, Not Rated, DVD-$44.98 SRP) is a brilliant snapshot of the culture, values, prejudices, hopes, and fears of an average American town. Give it a spin.

    Taking a fictionalized look at the events that brought the infamous alien autopsy footage to the public eye in 1995, Alien Autopsy (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$14.98 SRP) is best when its two leads – Britain’s presenting duo Ant & Dec – are onscreen as the pals that found the “footage). Bonus features include an audio commentary, alternate opening, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

    It’s quite a daunting – some would say foolish – idea to jump in and attempt to do an overview and analysis of the history of film comedy, but Saul Austerlitz’s Another Fine Mess: A History Of Film Comedy (Chicago Review Press, $24.95 SRP) is an admirable, enjoyable stab at doing just that. Fans of film comedy will enjoy it as a refresher course, as well as an introduction to some pieces they may have overlooked.

    Joseph Campbell’s influential PBS series The Power Of Myth (Acorn, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP) gets a new 2-disc special edition upgrade, featuring a conversation with Campbell, selections from host Bill Moyers’ interview with George Lucas, galleries, and a viewer’s guide.

    In viewing it again after a quite a few years, the best way I can sum up how American Beauty (Dreamworks, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$29.98 SRP) feels is by saying it all feels so precious. I think it’s a kinder way of pointing how pretentiously artificial its middle class suburban drama feels, from Kevin Spacey’s midlife crisis to the high school kids’ fumbling flirting… Really, just all of it. The new Blu-Ray features an audio commentary, a featurette, a storyboard presentation, and a pair of theatrical trailers.

    How many of you remember that the first live action film ever released by Dreamworks was the George Clooney & Nicole Kidman action thriller The Peacemaker (Dreamworks, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$24.99 SRP), in which the pair had to track do0wn a clutch of stolen Russian nukes before the thieves can do something really nasty with them. Newly on Blu-Ray, bonus features include deleted scenes, stunt footage, and the theatrical trailer.

    I was shocked – SHOCKED – when Drea de Matteo arrived on Wisteria Lane harboring secrets. Secrets? On Wisteria Lane? Unheard of! And then a plane crashed on the lane, which is probably the most normal thing that’s happened there the entire series. Desperate Housewives: Season 6 (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$45.99 SRP) contains featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, and a poorly-written set of interviews featuring the current Miss Piggy.

    The folks at the Warner Archive dip into the vault for a pair of rarely seen George Pal productions sure to make completionists happy – Atlantis: The Lost Continent & The Power (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.95 each). The condition of the prints isn’t the greatest, but at least they’re available.

    It should come as no surprise that the main draw of Castle (ABC Studios, Not Rated, DVD-$45.99 SRP) is star Nathan Fillion, whose charisma managed to make even the mediocre Firefly almost watchable. The complete 2nd season set contains all 24 episodes, plus featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

    A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost walks into a second season. You know, that sounded a lot better in my head. No, really, it did sound a lot better there. Seriously. Anyway, the second season of Being Human (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$59.98 SRP) is out, and it finds our three supernatural roomies are being hunted by a group of religious nuts bent on their destruction. Bonus features include a whole clutch of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    Explore the first family of NASCAR racing via the documentary Petty Blue (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP), which looks at the four generations of racing Pettys – from Lee to Richard to Kyle to Adam – as they helped define a national pastime. Bonus features include featurettes, bonus interviews, and deleted scenes.

    Their owner still won’t license them for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVDs, but the restored Gamera films continue to roll out with a new pair of double feature releases – Gamera vs Guiron/Gamera vs Jiger and Gamera vs Gyaos/Gamera vs Viras (Shout Factory, Not Rated. DVD-$19.93 SRP).

    Witness a little bit of your soul die if you dare to partake of Disney’s latest awkward exploitation of their catalogue characters with Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which is basically Peter Pan by way of Spice World – or Tink In The City. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, featurettes, and a music video.

    It all began when a woman I know described Justin Bieber as “sexy”. Sure, I guess he’s a cute kid and all, but this just seemed wrong to me. How can a woman in her mid-thirties find a sixteen year old child “sexy”? I tried to let her comment slide, but found myself haunted by images of ‘The Biebs’ as he is lovingly referred to by his fans. How does a 16 year old boy from Ontario become an internationally worshipped and drooled over sex icon? Furthermore, why does it creep me out so much?

    Granted, many of his fans are teenage girls, but how could this skinny little teen appeal to women with the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Josh Holloway equally available to receive their affections from afar? I have a theory which may surprise you.

    According to various scientific studies, being on the birth control pill may be the reason many sexually mature women swoon over the likes of Justin Bieber and everyone’s favorite sparkly vampire Robert Pattinson (Twi-moms, anyone?). Many of the studies to date do not fully tackle the issue of physical attraction based on appearance alone, but to me it seems the effects of the birth control pill on at least some women’s preferences towards different types of men are apparent.

    Scent has been identified as a crucial factor in terms of physical attraction, as subconsciously we are all affected by them. Through these imperceptible differences in scent, naturally ovulating women are naturally attracted to males with differing MHC genes than their own, to ensure offspring with healthy and functioning immune systems. This does not seem to apply to women on the birth control pill, and as many studies have shown they actually tend to be more attracted to men with more similar MHC genes.

    What does this mean? Generally, men with very differing MHC genes from women are rugged, manly, hairy, and strong. Men with MHC genes more similar to their female counterparts tend to be less hairy, less muscular and possess more effeminate features.

    Couples who share similar MHC genes are far more likely to be related, which some studies are linking to higher infertility rates. It also means that the laws of natural attraction no longer apply for many of us, men and women included. Ovulating women are known to give off subtle signals that attract men and signal fertility – women with regulated hormone levels do not.

    Nobody really knows why this makes them more drawn to more effeminate men, but some theories suggest that the hormones in birth control which mimic pregnancy also tend to subconsciously draw women to more nurturing companions. This brings in another issue entirely: deciding to go on or off the birth control pill could have potentially disastrous effects on a relationship. Think about it, if your girlfriend is attracted to you while she is on the pill, and then stops taking it, she will undergo a massive change in hormones which she will have no control over. This hormonal change could wreak havoc on an unsuspecting relationship in a number of ways – such as the woman being more likely to end the relationship or cheat as she is no longer attracted to the partner she is with on a purely physical/hormonal level.

    One thing is for sure: A lot has changed since the 1960’s when the birth control was made widely available to women. Though this may be highly subjective, to me it appears that male sex icons are getting younger and for lack of a better word, girlier, while female sex icons have remained relatively the same age, with the same degree of femininity.

    It is impossible to argue that pre-1960’s heartthrobs such as Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, Sean Connery, Clark Gable, Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood were not ultra-masculine. Can you say the same for the 1990’s or 2000’s? Fashions and styles change, but when pictured side by side it is clear that more modern definitions of sexual attractiveness have undergone many changes in the last fifty years. Even comparing Michael Keaton (who played Batman in 1989) to Christian Bale (who played Batman in 2005) you can see how these changes have affected what is sexy in 2010. Whether it has been a purely cultural shift or something more complex is up to you to decide.

    Sadly, you don’t get the 3-D experience of their recent theatrical re-release, but the high definition versions of Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP each) are still an eye-popping treat that look and sound really, really good on your massive HDTV. Many of the bonus features are ported over from the most recent DVD special editions, including audio commentaries, featurettes, and deleted scenes. There are also a fair number of new bonus features, including animated studio stories, a featurette on the Toy Story zoetrope, Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs, and sneak peeks at Toy Story 3. Are they worth it? Oh yes. Yes they are.

    There have been diecast replicas made in the past, and while I miss the replacement of the stainless steel body for plastic, it is pretty damn cool to have a Back To The Future Delorean ($39.99) with full lights and sounds. Coming in at 1/15 scale, the lights glow a brilliant blue as you have the option of 10 different sounds – everything from the flux capacitor engaging to the gull-wing doors opening.

    It’s Christmas at Easter as those nifty chaps at Rifftrax bring you a DVD release of their holiday Rifftrax Live! Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza! (Legend Films, Not Rated, DVD-$14.95). Filmed in San Diego and beamed to theaters around the country (and now viewable in your own home), it featured the riffing wonderment of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett tackling festive shorts with special guest star Weird Al Yankovic. Nice, right?

    When Mr. Fox (George Clooney) takes his thieving ways a bit too far, the wrath of the local human farmers is brought down around the heads of his friends in family in We Anderson’s delight, stop-motion animated Fantastic Mr. Fox (Fox, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP). Will Fox be able to pull everyone through in this adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic? Trust me when I tell you to see for yourself. Bonus materials include a clutch of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    I think a comedic take on sword & sorcery epics has been a long-time coming, and I just wish that Comedy Central’s take on it – Krod Mandoon And The Flaming Sword Of Fire (Comedy Central, Not Rated, DVD-$19.99 SRP) had been a little bit more solid than it wound up being. It’s since been cancelled, which is a shame, because given time, I’m sure the material would have lived up to the cast – including Matt Lucas’s wonderfully played master villain. Bonus materials include a behind-the-scenes featurette, cast interviews, deleted/extended scenes, and outtakes.

    The 3rd season of Mad Men (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) is when much long-accumulating crap hit many a fan for every character, culminating in drastic changes not just in the office, but also at home. The 4-disc set contains all 13 episodes, plus audio commentaries, featurettes, and a documentary on Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers. A Blu-Ray edition ($49.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    It’s not nearly the mess that some have made it out to be, but as satirical films about the illogic of war and the military go, The Men Who Stare At Goats (Anchor bay, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP) is just as inconsistent and imperfect as a film (also adapted from a far better book) 40 years its senior, Catch-22. Give it a spin and see if you share my thoughts on it, as the story itself – about the real military testing to discover psychic powers – is a hoot. Bonus materials include audio commentaries, featurettes, and deleted scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    It never quite lived up to the fun and adventure of its predecessor, but by the end of Stargate Atlantis (MGM, Not Rated, DVD-$199.98 SRP), a number of cast editions and a devil-may-care attitude crept in, which made the show a heck of a lot more enjoyable. Don’t believe me? Get the 26-disc complete series set, containing all 5 seasons, plus an exclusive bonus disc with tons of new extras.

    For all those (including myself) who have accused Steven Spielberg of being an emotional button-pushing, saccharine filmmaker, watch The Blind Side (Warner Bros., Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.98 SRP) and see a truly off-putting, diabetes-inducing flick in action. There’s just so many aspects of this ballsy conservative woman who hand-picks an underprivileged teenager to save and he goes on to be a football success tale that I find offensive, that to select just one does a disservice to my loathing. Bonus materials are limited to additional scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($35.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    I think the quicker we can forget that the AMC remake of the brilliant 60’s series ever happened, the better, because this take on The Prisoner (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP) is just a boring, ill-conceived mess. In fact, the only bright light in a dark forest is Ian McKellen, who desperately tries to spark things up. Bonus materials include a pair of commentaries, featurettes, and an interview with McKellen.

    Fans of low-budget, direct-to-video horror will want to pick up the “8 Films To Die For” comprising the 4th edition of the After Dark Horrorfest – Lake Mungo, Dread, The Graves, Kill Theory, The Reeds, Hidden, The Final, & Zombies Of Mass Destruction (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP each).

    Overshadowed by the arrival of Mike Tyson, Robert Townsend’s Phantom Punch (Screen Media, Rated R, DVD-$24.98 SRP) presents a complicated biopic about the equally complicated former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, portrayed by Ving Rhames.

    If you’d like to partake of a brilliant, fascinating documentary snapshot of what seems like a distant age – even though it’s only 40 years ago – take a look at Rocky Road To Dublin (Icarus Films, Not Rated, DVD-$24.98 SRP), director Peter Lennon’s look at an Ireland one the terrifying verge of social upheaval, as theocratic social norms were blown sky high. The disc also includes a newly produced making-of documentary.

    The 3rd volume of The Judy Garland Show (Infinity, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) brings another pair of complete episodes, featuring guests Lena Horne, Terry-Thomas, Tony Bennett, Dick Shawn, and Jerry Van Dyke.

    Celebrate Easter with a pair of new-to-DVD specials, the first of which is Bugs Bunny’s Easter Funnies (Warner Brow., Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP), which uses linking material to weave together classic Looney Tunes cartoons that have some vague content connection to the holiday. The other release is The First Easter Rabbit (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP), from those purveyors of animated holiday specials, Rankin/Bass.

    Remember Ken Wahl? Remember Wiseguy, the show in which he starred as the FBI deep cover agent Vincent Terranova, out to take down the mob from within. Now you can get all 4 seasons in one handy set. Wiseguy: The Collector’s Edition (Mill Creek, Not Rated, DVD-$44.98 SRP) contains all 67 episodes, 3 of which never aired.

    Well, now we know that while Jeff Bridges was filming the role that would earn him an Oscar, his brother Beau was co-starring in a direct-to-video sequel with Bindi Irwin – Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove (Warner Bros., Rated PG, DVD-$27.98 SRP). Yeah. It’s exactly what you expect. Bonus materials include featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. A Blu-Ray edition ($35.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    I know there are plenty of fans of both The Black Hole and TRON out there, and Mindstyle has decided to combine the two into a highly detailed, scaled vinyl replica of the robot V.I.N.C.E.N.T.     I admit – besides just being a fan of the show and being delighted that another volume has arrived – I’m even more delighted by the release of the Mystery Science Theater Collection: Volume XVII (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$59.97 SRP) than usual because of the bonus features. Which feature, in particular? The “Crow vs. Crow” panel I put together and hosted at last year’s DragonCon, featuring Trace Beaulieu and Bill Corbett, is on this set. The films included in the set are The Crawling Eye (featuring a special introduction from Joel Hodgson), The Beatniks, The Final Sacrifice, and Blood Waters Of Dr. Z.

    I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of wimpy flashlights. I want a flashlight that looks like it came right out of The X-Files… You know, with that wildly improbably beam that illuminated an entire wooded area with a powerful white light. Well, fantasy has become reality with the Icon High-Powered LED Flashlight ($34.99-$44.99). With 100 lumens of light and a pocket-able size, it’s the last flashlight you’ll want to own. The full size is dubbed “Rogue 2”, and it’s also available in a smaller size (called the Rogue 1)… You know, for the car. Or a leprechaun.

    I had little expectation going in, but to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the new CG-animated adaptation of Tezuka Osamu’s Astro Boy (Summit, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP) is an understatement. In a nutshell, Astro Boy is the robot re-creation of the brilliant scientist Dr. Tenma’s son Toby, who is lost in a tragic accident. To say anymore about what actually happens in the film, which pulls no emotional punches, is to deny you the same pleasant surprise I had. See it. Bonus materials include a clutch of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    I wish Disney’s grand return to traditional animation hadn’t been a by-the-numbers princess film, but at least there’s enough fun and spirit in Princess And The Frog (Walt Disney, Rated G, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP), which puts a New Orleans spin on the classic tale of the cursed prince and his desire to find a princess to break said curse. And yes, it’s always great to have jazzy Randy Newman tunes to help things along. The 3-disc Blu-Ray set contains a massive clutch of behind-the-scenes featurettes, an audio commentary, deleted scenes, music videos, and more. The set also include a standard DVD edition of the film.

    The 13th season of South Park (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.99 SRP) isn’t one of their most memorable of recent years, but it did feature a few outstanding episodes – in particular the Roland Emmerich take-off “Pee”. While the new set doesn’t feature audio commentaries, it does add some deleted scenes and a featurette touring South Park Studios. A Blu-Ray edition ($57.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus features.

    The second half of the film doesn’t live up to the first half, but The Hurt Locker (Summit, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.99 SRP) certainly deserved the Oscar over Avatar, if only for that brilliantly crafted, nail-biting first half about an elite team of soldiers tasked with diffusing the bombs that are a constant danger in Iraq. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and a still gallery.

    While it’s not quite the revelation that some tried to make it out to be, Up In The Air (Paramount, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$39.99 SRP) is a solid film about a jet-setting businessman (George Clooney) whose job is to travel the globe letting the employees of various companies know they’ve been downsized. He’s a man without a home, seemingly happy with his transient, on-the-go life… But things go a bit awry when a pair of female wrenches are thrown into his perfect machine. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a music video, and more.

    Well, The Fourth Kind (Universal, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$36.99 SRP) tries to be the alien abduction equivalent of Paranormal Activity, with a low-fi psychological unraveling and reenactment of “actual cases”. Does it succeed? Not really. It’s actually pretty funny, how earnest it is. As far as bonus materials go, you get deleted scenes.

    Why, exactly, did USA decide to cancel Monk (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP)? Not only was the show still a joy to watch, but their schedule isn’t exactly packed to the gills with hits. So let us all mourn the loss with the complete 8th season set, featuring video commentary, cast & crew interviews, set tours, and a goodbye featurette.

    While watching Did You Hear About The Morgans? (Sony, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP), I couldn’t help but be reminded of a far more enjoyable comedy about a pair of city slickers thrown into the Witness Protection Program and relocated to the sticks, My Blue Heaven. Maybe that’s because High Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker never really gel enough as either a couple or a comedy duo for my mind not to wander to better things. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

    Produced by the Wachoski Brothers, Ninja Assassin (Warner Bros., Rated R, DVD-$28.98 SRP) is an entertaining, but entirely disposable, martial arts flick with a plot that doesn’t even stick in my head. If you want to just pop in an action movie and veg for a bit, this is for you. Bonus materials include a trio of featurettes and additional scenes. A Blu-Ray edition ($35.99 SRP) is also available, with the same bonus materials.

    To dismiss Bandslam (Summit, Rated PG, DVD-$25.99 SRP) as a Disney Channel-esque bubblegum pop confection is to miss out on a genuinely fun, engaging, warts & all take of a trio of high schoolers set on making their mark at the country’s biggest musical competition. It’s a little bit Freaks & Geeks meets High School Musical. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and featurettes.

    John Krasinski takes David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews With Hideous Men (IFC Films, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP) and adapts it into a film that’s brilliant in fits and starts, but can never maintain itself long enough for me to feel he actually accomplished a worthwhile adaptation – which is unfortunate, because this could have been his Short Cuts. Bonus materials include a featurette, interview with Krasinski, a TV spot, and the trailer.

    When Sideshow announced that they’d begin producing premium format mixed-media figures based on iconic Disney characters, I had high hopes for the line. I’ve long been a fan of their premium format takes on Star Wars and Marvel characters, and was happy to find that my anticipation for the Disney line was rewarded with an incredible piece capturing the Evil Queen from Snow White ($299.99). With a run of only 300 for the exclusive edition (which nets you the raven perched on the skull topped book) and 600 for the non-exclusive, you’d better act fast to get this, and make sure to keep up on future editions to the line.

    In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) – the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”

    However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals – from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti – were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

    If you’re ever in a room with Jason Reitman and your job is to interview him, you need to bring good questions.

    This isn’t to say that asking the young lad the usual, empty questions like “What was it like working with George Clooney?” won’t get answered. They will. In fact, he’ll answer as he scribbles in a small notebook that keeps track of his commonly asked questions. He’ll then make a pie chart out of it. It’s not a problem if you’re really interested in knowing what it was like working with George Clooney, but if you’re trying to have a talk with the man in a honest, open way it’s as distracting as someone who is chatting with you as they hammer out an e-mail in the background. UP IN THE AIR is a wonderfully composed film that deals with one man’s journey who is trying to realize his goal of being the ultimate road warrior while also trying to indulge in the affections of a woman on his terms before the terms unexpectedly change.

    UP IN THE AIR opens in select markets today.

    jason2JASON REITMAN: I was in the bookstore and at the time I was looking for something to read. I liked the cover and started reading it and it completely spoke to me.

    QUESTION: Jason, the ending worked for me but at any time during the making of the movie or afterwards was there any talk of an alternative or different ending?

    REITMAN: No. The ending was one of the first things that came to me. I wanted to make a movie about a character who learned the importance of companionship through loss not through romance. There plenty of times when you look up on screen and say you know, I am kinda like that myself. But, I wanted a film where ““ it was right at the moment when you realize that she’s unavailable that not only did his character realize that he wanted something but the audience wanted it for him.

    QUESTION: What has the reaction been to the ending because it took me by surprise?

    REITMAN: Mixed. Half the people think he’s going on the road to find someone and spend his life with them and half the people think that he’s going to stay on the road for the company for the rest of his life. And, that’s kind of what I want. I want half the people to think one thing and half the people to think another. That’s when I think I’ve done my job when the audience is split. Like in Juno. Half the people thought it was pro choice and half the people thought it was pro life. And Thank You for Smoking, conservatives thought it was theirs, liberals thought it was theirs, so I really want you to see yourself in the film. And the end of this movie is just a shot of clouds and hopefully it’s a moment for the audience themselves to think about what they want for themselves. It really doesn’t matter what the character does ““ he’s fictitious.

    QUESTION: You felt good about the casting and meeting up with George Clooney?

    REITMAN: Yes. Certainly. I wrote it for George and I told his agent that and he said you should go see him in Italy. I thought that was an awful idea. And I got to his house and he had not read the script yet and spent a couple days at his house in Lake Como and he finally walked in and said to me I just read the script and it’s great. It was such a wonderful holiday. He’s lovely. Everything you hear about him is true. He’s magnanimous and makes you feel comfortable. Unlike most movie stars who want to create barriers he breaks that barrier down immediately. Within a group of people he’s working with, he makes you comfortable and that’s really nice. I work with all kinds of people and part of the job is understanding people and learning how to manipulate people ““ that’s the whole job.

    QUESTION: Were you the victim of any George Clooney practical jokes?

    REITMAN: No, that’s funny. Everyone asks me that and I kind of wish now that there had been some pranks on set because I have nothing to report. Guess he pranks people that deserve it and I guess he liked us.

    QUESTION: Are you keeping track of our questions?

    REITMAN: I’m keeping track of every question that I’m asked. I am going to show you a pie chart of all the questions I’m asked”¦..asked about Ghostbusters 3 twelve times in the last week. Make it 13…

    jason3QUESTION: How tough was it for you to make George kind of detached, kind of a propagandistic? He’s kind of hard to like in the beginning but obviously at the end we feel great, he warms by the end of it. Creating this character he’s very cold and very standoffish. It was a rift I would think to take a character like him and make him not so likeable in the beginning and then shift that towards the end.

    REITMAN: It’s funny, because I find that sometimes audiences find Michael likeable from the beginning and sometimes they don’t and it has a lot to do with your perspective of his lifestyle. If you kind of embrace his version of life at the beginning of the film then he doesn’t come off cold, he’s more likeable. There’s something oddly exotic being around strangers all the time instead of the same old people. I don’t get along very well with my family so I really think that character in the film is just as much me. Really, it’s not about making somebody likeable or unlikable or positive or negative. I don’t really believe in that. I think that human beings are grey, not black and white. Unlikable just means that one person”¦.hey, someone married Hitler. We’re all grey. So I just want to humanize his life as much as possible.

    QUESTION: What did you learn after this experience that you didn’t know before?

    REITMAN: I think I’ve become a better director. Just over my three films I’ve become more detailed in my filmmaking. I think my first film was basically a satire and lived in an elevated reality and was much more contrarian and funny. And over the last few films, Juno and now this one I’ve become more and more interested in the human experience rather than just being funny. This film has as much of me in it as any film I can imagine. And a lot has to do with trusting my instincts.

    QUESTION: There is a lot of depth and substance going on in this film.

    REITMAN: We are all faced with what we want in our lives and who we want in our lives and it’s becoming a more complicated question because of technology that we view ourselves oddly closer to more people ““ let’s say we have 1,000 friends on Facebook but we not ever see them. And because of technology we are actually distancing ourselves. We are in a strange moment in time where we can be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. And that raises a lot of questions as to who are you going to be lose to and how are you going to be close to them?

    jason4QUESTION: I was just going to ask you about Twitter. I see you tweet quite a bit.

    REITMAN: Yes.

    QUESTION: I’ve noticed in the last few days you tweet as much as I do.

    REITMAN: Is it entertaining?

    QUESTION: Yes it is actually.

    REITMAN: Am I tweeting too much? Should I hold back a little? It’s a very tricky entertainment form.

    QUESTION: So do you think Simmons is your good luck charm?

    REITMAN: Yes. He is. Woody Allen and Alfred Hitchcock had all these beautiful women as their muses and I have J.K. Simmons.

    (Laughs)

    REITMAN: He’s in every movie I do. He’s just my voice.

    QUESTION: It seems like J.K. Simons and Jason Bateman are always in the same movie. Are they a package deal?

    REITMAN: That’s true. They were in Extract. That’s funny. Do you know what it is? They are just great guys. Bill Macy also. When you start to see people cast over and over, there is a reason why. It’s one, they are great to be on set and two, they know how to do their job ““ cine-technicians.

    QUESTION: You said this movie is about the closest thing you’ve written to an original screenplay. I’ve seen your previous interviews where you said you have distilled more of your own life experience into this book ““ how did you approach writing this knowing that you had a book and also wanted to diffuse your own elements into that. How long was that process?

    REITMAN: It took six years to write and to give you an idea, Alex is not in the book, Natalie is not in the book, firing on line is not in the book, the backpack speech is not in the book, the wedding is not in the book, cardboard cut-out is not in the book, so, the plot is very much my own. I took a character philosophy that I really identified with and went from there and made my own film. It was a journalist who actually put it best, and I wish I could say I wrote this but I didn’t, he said to me the book is about a man losing it and the movie is about a man finding it. I thought that was appropriately said.

    QUESTION: How much did the economy affect the film?

    REITMAN: When I originally started writing this I saw it as a satire, a corporate satire and as I changed and the world changed, I realized that I need to be more authentic in the way I approach people losing their jobs and I’m sure you know this but we put ads in the paper and got real people to come in and go on camera as people get fired in the film.

    QUESTION: After the success of Juno it is still difficult to get movies made. Do you still have to struggle to execute your own particular vision?

    REITMAN: Juno really changed my life. That was a movie that was made for $7 million dollars and went on to earn $230 million. It’s so strange. I wrote the script and no one ever pushed me on anything. Paramount really supported me and the vision of this film and it’s harder and harder to make these kinds of movies these days but they really went to bat for me.

    QUESTION: Even your co-producer?

    REITMAN: My dad you mean? Yeah, my dad went to bat for me too.

    (Laughs)

    QUESTION: Did you meet Walter Kirn at all?

    REITMAN: Yes. Walter and I are friends now. I make a cordial reach out to the authors that I work with ““ Chris Buckley, Walter Kirn, Diablo Cody and I are very close and now I work with Jenny Lument and Joyce Major in two different projects. I have become close with both of them. Never really want to get into a Stanley Kubrick situation ““ there’s no point. So, I reach out and try to make it very clear from the beginning that look a movie and a book are two different things and I’m making a movie here and not a book but I have a tremendous amount of respect for the work they did and try to keep them in the loop but a movie is not a book. Some authors feel like they have been kicked aside and I try and make them feel the opposite.

    jason1QUESTION: I flew back from LA this morning and I used my Southwest Avis card to cut in line. What kinds of cards to you have that you feel powerful ““ cards with points?

    REITMAN: I am proudest of my Academy card. It is the most exciting to me. I carry that everywhere proudly. I took a flight from out of Chicago and back in the summer once just to retain my status.

    (Laughs)

    QUESTION: You mentioned the Academy ““ just before you came in we were talking about the best picture nominees, how do you feel?

    REITMAN: I don’t like it. It could wind up very favorable for me. I think that ““ look it’s been around for 80 years and call me a traditionalist but I like that there were five. That made it a more exclusive club and Juno got in when it’s was there was just five and doesn’t have an asterisk next to it. I would like to have been consulted. I’m a member of the academy. It’s not like I voted on this. I just woke up one morning and there was a new rule and it seems to have been done for the wrong reasons. The Oscars is one of the few achievements that seem to mean anything and it’s just sad ““ I don’t know what they were going after. I don’t think GI Joe is suddenly going to be nominated. I don’t buy it.

    QUESTION: Isn’t it also about the music?

    REITMAN: I think the music category is a little messed up and I’ve had two movies in a row with great songs and songs that are ineligible. Songs that were unpublished songs. The song from Juno, and the song that Brad Smith wrote for this movie. Never published. It is an original song and rules just made it ineligible. It’s a Disney rule.

    (Laughs)

    CHRISTOPHER STIPP: I read in an interview you related a great story about when you first started doing a lot of this film work in high school when you were investigating something going on in your school and you literally had a camera flipped on you. It struck me as interesting that a process of something so simple could suddenly change the way you view something. To a larger point, how do you keep things fresh about the way you see yourself as a director to make sure you are not going to stay in your own comfort zone?

    REITMAN: I just try to keep myself open to new experiences. I love going into places where I know nobody and talk to strangers and hopefully that constant influx of conversation will keep me a little bit fresh. Everyone runs out of things to say.

    QUESTION: Do you think you will?

    REITMAN: Every director. Except maybe Kubrick. I think everyone does and it’s just a fact of life. Musicians, every artist does. And at that point I hope I’ll find happiness from something else.

    CS: That speaks to the point of the movie that you’re doing it because you need ““ these people that are getting fired depend on these little jobs to keep their lives in balance and once these things go away people are like in freefall ““ did it have an effect on you personally or the way you look at your job?

    REITMAN: Yes. A real sense of purpose from the filmmaking. I do it 7 days a week and it’s what I live for. That’s the only way to be a filmmaker because it’s too competitive. If anyone took that away from me, it would be really tough.

    QUESTION: You mentioned Jenny Lument. Are you in a position to elaborate on that project?

    REITMAN: A little bit. Basically she written a wonderful screenplay ““ I’m working on it with her right now ““ she approached the girl who wrote Rachel Getting Married and I just love it.

    QUESTION: A period piece? Contemporary?

    REITMAN: Contemporary. I don’t think I could make a period piece. I don’t really care about people who lived in the past. I don’t understand why their stories need to be told and retold. If you’ve ever seen someone making a movie with someone in a petticoat ““ it’s”¦

    (Laughs)

    To be fair, Thank You for Smoking was a time piece and we made it to that time. It was about 1997 and Joyce Major’s book takes place in the late 80’s, but I have a point of view on those because I was alive during that time but I won’t be making a movie about an era I don’t have some sort of perspective on. Maybe that will change. I don’t know. You never say never.

    jason5QUESTION: The fashion design, you had the uniformity of the hotel rooms you had the sparseness of Ryan’s apartment and then cue up to the sequence in Milwaukee where you had that arcane, older chalet type hotel. Can you elaborate more on that?

    REITMAN: We made a decision that we were going to make an arch across the film that costumes, lighting, extras, shooting, design, everything in which the beginning of the movie was going to be beautifully lit and stylish and shot slickly and over the course of the film it would become more and more warmed it up and by the end of the film, we’d be shooting hand held, using long lenses, and warm lighting. Even the extras at the beginning of the film were chosen because they were better looking and in better shape. We were looking for more average at the end of the film, walking through the airport, it’s hand held, people are dressed sloppy, people are mopping the floor, the lighting is not as pretty and the movie goes through an overall transition from slick to real.

    CS: There’s the old adage that a movie is made three times, once when you write it, once when you shoot it and once when you edit it. Did you find along those lines you were discovering those things you weren’t expecting?

    REITMAN: Oh yeah. The movie tells itself. It’s even more than three times. One movie changes every day. I like to consider it one long process. Yea, I want to get it to the screen and it’s going to require me to do all these different things along the way ““ involving many different departments making thousands of decisions a day, whether you know it or not and it’s a constant discovery process. In other words, the process starts with an idea and then ends with the same idea.

    QUESTION: What’s your favorite Ivan Reitman movie?

    REITMAN: It’s tough because what was his most import film? What was his most influential film? It would be a different answer for each. If I was to sit down and watch any one of his films right now I’d pull up Stripes. That’s the most fun to watch. He’s the most culturally impactful film is either Ghostbusters or Animal House depending on what you’re looking at. And his best movie is probably, Dave.

    QUESTION: Did you take that patch that you found at the TV station?

    arizonaREITMAN: No, I’m not that rude. It was crazy to see that. The Arizona state flag / Ghostbusters patch where this ghost picks up this symbol of the cross that was made out of the Arizona state flag.

    QUESTION: What are your thoughts about film critics?

    REITMAN: Film critics, I think in my case, are very important because they are the reason people see my kind of movies. In increasing noise, they are one of the last voice boxes that give people to see movies that are made for adults. There’s plenty of marketing out there for films that are made for kids. So as one of the few people who try to make movies for adults, I am very grateful that the critic still exists and hold weight.

    QUESTION: Bet you weren’t impressed with GI Joe? Not your best picture nominee?

    (Laughs)

    REITMAN: GI Joe? I liked the scene when he puts his arm out and the venom finds it’s way out. That was pretty cool.

    CS: If you are a director, does Michael Bay through school saying, “I’m going to make Michael Bay kind of movies?”

    REITMAN: I don’t think you go through school thinking you’re going to make a certain kind of movie, you just start making movies and say, “Oh, I guess I’m that kind of a director.” I would love to co-direct a movie with Michael Bay. I’d like to do a movie where he directs all the drama and I direct all the action.

    (Laughs)

    (Laughs)

    I think that would be awesome. I did float that to Paramount. I’m still up for it but not sure Michael would be up for it.

    QUESTION: Would you be up for MTV music video awards or movie awards?

    REITMAN: No, no

    QUESTION: Oh, full feature length

    REITMAN: Yeah, gotta spend $500 million ““ should cost a fortune. But, again, if I run out of things to say, maybe I’ll direct one of those films. But in the meantime I like small personal films. That’s what gets me excited.

    QUESTION: I was there last night when you talked about that quote from the writer who made”¦

    REITMAN: I still have to do research. I work from the heart and it’s a story I want to tell. That’s more important to me than details of what actually happened. The story was, there was an interview and the guys asked “How to you figure out all these kinds of things that various explosives work” and he goes, “I don’t even know what a detonator is. I just like the word.” What a great quote, right? You can tell sometimes when a writer cares too much about the details and what happened and cares too little about real drama. But you guys are journalists; it speaks to what you do. Like Shattered Glass.

    (Laughs)

    CS: The movie itself is sort of a meditation on the nature of work of doing what you love or doing what you like or doing what you’re feeling comfortable in doing. Because I have a job and I like my little place and I don’t know what I’d do without it. I’ve been laid off 3 times before and I’m 34 and I’m not really big on “the man” but what is the nature of work to you?

    REITMAN: It defines me. It’s who I am. I’m a director. When you introduce me to someone, that’s the first thing you would say about me. It’s what I wake up and go to sleep thinking about. I think this film. Someone told me when a film works it’s a mirror. When any story works, it’s a mirror. You simply see yourself in it and that’s very important to me. I won’t let you see me in my work, I will only let you see yourself. Like when I did “Smoking”, I didn’t do The Insider. I didn’t make a movie to end up asking you a question – in the fact that the movie speaks to you in that way makes me happy because it speaks to you individually in that way. I don’t make movies to change people, I just want people to see themselves in them.

    The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the Quick Stop Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

    There’s nothing more depressing than finishing a good novel. Perhaps the absolute was a bit much, I admit, but it is with a sense of disappointment that one finishes a good novel and must leave its world. I felt that sense of loss upon completing Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book (HarperCollins, $17.99 SRP) – the wonderful tale of a boy named Bod, adopted by the dead in a small town graveyard after his family is murdered by a mysterious evil man named Jack. I shall not attempt to summarize if further (or any more poorly) except to say that you should seek the book out immediately and give it a read. I’ve read many a book in my day – fiction and non, biographies (both auto & non), textbooks… you name it. I’ve finally determined exactly what I enjoy about Neil Gaiman’s books, and that is the sense of magic in the stories he writes. It may not even be literal magic – though there’s plenty of that – it’s more a general sensibility that permeates his work.

    He’s avoided taking the plunge into many a feature film (besides small roles in Stardust, For Your Consideration, & A Night At The Museum), so there must have been something special that Ricky Gervais saw in Ghost Town (Paramount, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.98 SRP) to finally sign up for the lead. After watching it, I can see why – it’s a nicely calculated move that allows him to have a plum part with a well-written script in a film that also has a broad appeal. In a nutshell, imagine if the lead in Ghost had been Whoopi Goldberg’s character – but instead of just hearing them, Gervais’s curmudgeonly dentist Dr. Pinkus can see and hear the departed after a brief “episode” during a routine colon examination. Ultimately, this does involve a love story and Greg Kinnear and a true heart, but the real joy is just watching Ricky be Ricky. Bonus features include an audio commentary with writer/director David Koepp & Gervais, and a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes. A Blu-Ray edition is also available ($39.99 SRP) with identical bonus features.

    While it’s not exactly the continuing adventures that some fans have been clamoring for, JK Rowling dipped back into the Harry Potter universe to bring to life the magical book of fairy tales that played a role in the 7th and final Potter installment. The only catch was that she originally crafted those books as a clutch of handmade tomes distributed to those who had helped make the Potter series a reality, plus one edition that was sold at auction for charity. That edition sold to Amazon.com, and through many a winding path and all for charity, the general public can now get their own copy of The Tales Of Beedle The Bard (Scholastic, $12.99 SRP) with commentary from the late Albus Dumbledore. It’s a slight volume, but it is a fun little peek back into that world.

    It was dismissed by many, but I got a kick out of Joel & Ethan Coen’s spy comedy Burn After Reading (Universal, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP), as it plays like a quirky cross between the plot twists of Fargo and the quirkiness of O Brother, Where Art Thou. Bottom line, it’s a nice character piece, and worth a second look. Bonus features include a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    I wasn’t sure, going in, whether or not I’d enjoy Pineapple Express (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$34.95 SRP). When all was said and done, though, I wound up digging it’s genre-melding ability to place a Judd Apatow pot and immature adult flick into an 80’s action flick that feels like Michael Mann meets John McTiernan. If you’ve been hesitant to give it a spin, give it a chance. The 2-disc special edition features an unrated cut of the film, an audio commentary, deleted/alternate scenes, making-of featurettes, raw footage, line-o-ramas, rehearsal footage, a table read, a gag reel, and more. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.95 SRP) with the same bonus features is also available.

    It didn’t make much of a blip at the box office despite a strong showing on the festival circuit, but here’s hoping home video will give a second life to the made-for-cult status comedy Hamlet 2 (Universal, Rated R, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which stars Steve Coogan as a not-terribly-talented actor turned high school drama teacher who devises a grand scheme to save the budget-axed drama program. That scheme? Engaging his blasé students and saving the program via his grand epiphany – a sequel to Hamlet that’s equal parts Shakespeare, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Doctor Who. Just watch the thing already. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, a sing along, and more.

    John Hodgman has been hounding me to give it a second chance, and now that I have the penultimate Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.0 (Universal, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) in hand, I may very well go back and give the whole thing another try. For fans, the 4-disc set features the extended version of the TV movie Razor, featurettes, podcasts, deleted scenes, and video blogs.

    It’s light, it’s frothy, but the real reason to watch The House Bunny (Sony, Rated PG-13, DVD-$39.95 SRP) is for the always-enjoyable comedic talents of star Anna Faris, here playing a Playmate who’s tossed out of the mansion and finds herself turning around a sorority filled with awkward girls. Think of it as some kind of bizarre Playboy’s Revenge Of The Nerds. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a music video, and more. A Blu-Ray edition is also available ($ SRP), sporting the same bonus materials.

    Strip away some of the self-aware smarm of Juno and throw it on TV with Molly Ringwald playing the mother to the pregnant teen and you’ve essentially got the ABC family series The Secret Life Of The American Teenager (Buena Vista, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP). The first season set features all 11 episodes, plus an on-set featurette.

    Everybody’s favorite sociopath makes his Blu-Ray debut with Dexter: The First Season (Showtime, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$54.98 SRP). It’s essentially the same special edition set as the standard DVD release, except in high definition and featuring a clutch of BD-Live features, including featurettes, a Michael C. Hall podcast, the first episode of season 3, and episodes of United States Of Tara.

    Less meets the eye in the second visually off-putting season of Transformers Animated (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$26.98 SRP), which took great characters and designs and turned them into graphic noise. I guess the kids today like it. The 2-disc set features a pair of audio commentaries, two animated shorts, and a photo gallery.

    From Doctor Who companion to woman for hire, Billie Piper stars in Secret Diary Of A Call Girl (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP) as the low-key Hannah, who by night transforms herself into London’s wildest and most successful high-priced female escort. The first season set features all 8 episodes, plus a featurette.

    The students of Cyprus-Rhodes University are back in class for the second season of ABC Family’s Greek (Buena Vista, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP). Will a Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach rock a few boats? Who knows? You will, if you watch the 12 episodes here, replete with audio commentaries, a flashback episode, a music video, and bloopers.

    Known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, composer Bear McCreary has also been tackling the score for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (La-La Land Records, $17.99 SRP), the first CD of which is now available for your listening pleasure.

    Soft-spoken Monika Hertwig has a horrible family legacy that she has spent her whole life trying to reconcile – that her father was the monstrous Nazi Officer Amon Goeth, commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp that was portrayed on screen in Schindler’s List. In attempting to come to terms with that legacy, she meets up with Helen Jonas, who lived as an enslaved servant under Goeth’s roof. This struggle – and the meeting of these two women – is chronicled in the fascinating documentary Inheritance (Docurama, Not Rated, DVD-$26.95 SRP). Give it a spin.

    Will the secret past of bellybutton-less Kyle finally be revealed in the second season of Kyle XY (Buena Vista, Not Rated, DVD-$39.99 SRP)? Or who the equally enigmatic Jessi XX is? Or anything, really? Find out in the 23 episodes comprising the second season, featuring audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and an alternate ending.

    Obnoxious sarcasm has a name – and a species – and it is Duckman (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP). Even all these years later, it still stands as a caustic, bitter pill of a show that’s also quite funny. The complete 3rd and 4th season set features all 48 episodes, plus video of the original pilot animatics, walk cycles, expressions, pencil tests, storyboards, and more.

    From the Pang Brothers, Bangkok Dangerous (Lionsgate, Rated R, DVD-$34.98 SRP) has the unfortunate luck to star Nicolas Cage as its lead, a hired assassin who tries to retire but finds himself being hunted himself. Sad that Cage has now become a parody of himself, and is largely unwatchable. The 2-disc edition features an alternate ending, featurettes, and the theatrical trailer.

    No matter how much my Irish friend Brian sings its praises, I just don’t enjoy Frisky Dingo (Adult Swim, Not Rated, DVD-$19.97 SRP). It doesn’t strike my funny bone, and I accept that. Still, people like Brian will delight in the complete second season, featuring all 13 episodes, a political commercial and an Xtacles skit.

    So you’ve got state of CGI and a bunch of theories about the hunting techniques of the dinosaurs. What do you do with all of this and get today’s audience to watch? Why, Jurassic Fight Club (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$39.95 SRP) – in which these theories are presented for various predators in full computer generated glory. The complete first season set features all 12 episodes, plus additional footage.

    Showtime’s sudsy pseudo-historical drama The Tudors returns for a second season (Paramount, Not Rated, DVD-$40.99 SRP), as King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Myers begins to hit the rocky relationship road that in many ways would define his reign. The 4-disc set features all 10 episodes, plus featurettes, galleries, and episodes of Californication and The United States Of Tara.

    In many ways the Seventh Heaven of its day, the eighth season of The Waltons (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 SRP) finds America’s first family in turmoil as their son is reported MIA. Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom, as there are plenty of things like births, graduations, and so forth to brighten the day. The 3-disc set features all 24 episodes, plus a bonus retrospective special.

    Seeking to recapture his Riddick heyday, Vin Diesel stars as the unfortunately named Toorop in the turgid sci-fi actioner Babylon AD (Fox, Not Rated, DVD-$29.99 SRP) that plays like a futuristic cross between Transporter and The Bodyguard. The 2-disc set contains a clutch of featurettes, a digital graphic novel, and more. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus features.

    Considering they cost next to nothing, I suppose the recent spate of parody movies really don’t need to make much at the theater and home video to be considered a massive success. It’s good that the threshold is so easily attainable, considering just how awful the latest, Disaster Movie (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP) is.
