    JUNE

    lucyline.gif

Hey guys! This month saw me take my first real vacation in about 3 years. I was actually away for 15 days of this month so my internet time was exactly halved. As a result, this month’s list is slightly shorter than usual. But I think I still found three nuggets of gold for your eye holes so take a look and know that I’ll be back to my usual length next month… ladies.

    1) Bill Murray’s Hall of Fame Speech

I’m not a baseball fan. As an Irishman I guess it’s just not in my blood. But I am a Bill Murray fan. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, you should be able to love Bill Murray.

What you may not have known about him is that he actually owns a baseball team. He co-owns the Charleston RiverDogs and due to his long service to baseball he has recently been inducted into the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame. And as he says in the video, he’s never been inducted into a Hall of Fame before so he had to accept.

Murray is a genius of the highest order so if you give him a podium to make a speech, you know it’s going to be good. He didn’t write anything for it, he just got up and spoke about how much he loves baseball and it’s every bit as good as you think it would be. Take a look.

    2) Paul & Storm – Write Like The Wind (George R. R. Martin)

We here at FRED love Paul & Storm.

    Well… we love Storm.

They have just released what is to my mind their first proper music video. Hopefully the first of many more to come. The song is about the agony of waiting for the next Game of Thrones book and the video is as ridiculous as you might expect from the duo.

    3) Super Mario Street Art

This is a really cool time-lapse video which shows how artist Chris Carlson creates a 3D looking image on the sidewalk with just chalk and a ruler. Two bonus cool points go to the art being of an 8bit Mario and the awesome music added to the video.

After seeing how he does it, I almost feel like I could give it a go too but I know that it would just look like a 5 year old attempted it.

    MAY

    lucyline.gif

Wow, it’s been a whole year since I started this column. Kind of amazing. I usually get distracted by something shiny at this point. But I guess, since this column is dedicated to the shiny things I was distracted by each month, it probably helps with doing this!

Well, let me show you the things that caught my attention in May.

    1) JoCo Cruise Crazy

I’ve mentioned before how we here at FRED are very jealous of the sea monkeys who get to experience the Jonathan Coulton cruise. Booking for next year’s cruise has opened up and to coincide with that they’ve been releasing videos of this year’s one.

These videos are great. You can find them all on Coulton’s YouTube page HERE but my favourite has to be this one entitled “Quitting”. More than just an advertisement, it’s a very inspirational video about doing what you love.

    2) Spicy News

This is just a very bizarre but ingenious concept. Each week a different comedian comes into the studio, eats a habanera pepper whole, and then gives a comedy rendition of the recent news headlines. They’re not allowed to drink anything or take anything that might help with the burning sensation in their mouth until they’ve finished their broadcast. This leads to some rather panicked presenting.

They put a new one up every Monday. Check out their channel HERE. To whet your appetite, so to speak, here is my favourite one, starring Stephanie Purtle.

Props to JJ Hawkins for introducing me to this.

    3) Pop Corn Slow-Mo

Ok, so this one is just plain silly. It’s super slow-mo’d, high definition, close-up footage of popcorn popping on an open pan. It’s cool, it’s pointless, it’s almost a complete embodiment of the internet.

Just try to ignore the annoying guys talking.

    4) Scott Pilgrim Wedding

This is a cute video that has been making the rounds on the internet, and for good reason. It’s a wedding present for a couple with very inventive friends. They took the Scott Pilgrim game and inserted the newlyweds as they fight ninjas and zombies on their way to coupledom.

    5) 8-Bit Radiohead

My Cabin Fever friend Brian pointed me towards this article. A brave and intrepid person has taken Radiohead’s OK Computer and completely redone it in 8-bit format. And it’s AMAZING. You can listen to the whole thing below.

    February

    lucyline.gif

The shortest month of the year is over now and even with it’s leap day I feel like it has flown by. But luckily, I still have a list of things that tickled me during the past 29 days.

    Lists. I love them.

    1) T-Rex Trying

What starting out for Hugh Murphy as a bit of a joke between friends about T-Rex’s tiny arms has turned into my favourite internet meme. Over on trextrying.tumblr.com you’ll find an endless amount of tiny arm jokes to brighten your day.

    It all started with this:

    t-rex-trying-to-paint-his-house

    And has run to here:

    t-rex-trying-to-hang-glide

    And so on:

    t-rex-trying-to-use-sunscreen

With new ones going up pretty much every day it’s worth following that blog for some regular giggles.

    2) Space Stallions

This video has been doing the rounds online all month. It’s an intro to a fictitious 80s cartoon “Space Stallions” that you will wish was real due to dangerous levels of awesomeness.

The video was made as a bachelor project for The Animation Workshop. I assume the guys got A+++.

It manages to squeeze everything cheesy and insane from our childhood cartoons and fuse it with a rocking synth track for maximum ‘tude.

    3) British Pathé

You know those old news reels that movies and TV shows like to parody so much? Well, they actually existed and were often even more insane than the parodies. Luckily, British Pathé have been uploading these classic videos online and they’re worth a look.

For example this piece of ant-theft technology which was supposed to be common place by now… I wonder why not.

Probably something to do with lawsuits.

Or how about this piece from 1932 about a golfer with no arms.

Seriously, check out the channel for more fascinating stuff from the past youtube.com/user/britishpathe.

    4) Rage Comics – In Real Life

By now you’re surely all familiar with that most ubiquitous of internet meme, the rage comic. Well, here is a great video that morphs people faces into those well known grotesqueries.

    5) Play Us Out, Lisa…

Lisa Hannigan covering Gotye‘s hit “Somebody That I Used To Know“. Too much musical loveliness in one video.

  • My Favourite Things – November 2011

    November

    lucyline.gif

This month I have been mostly watching youtube videos so November’s round-up is going to heavily reflect that. I’d argue that I may need to get out more but if I did, I wouldn’t have anything to share with you in this column and what would be the sense in that?

    1) Battle of the Brick: Built for Combat

In this mostly wordless stop motion animation Alex Kobbs recreates the Halo map Zanzibar pretty damn accurately with nothing but lego bricks. In the 30 minute movie he pits Reds versus Blues in a crazy capture the flag game. And there is a lot of really clever stuff involved.

    picture-1

Not only is it extremely faithful to the Halo franchise with lots of the weaponry and moves used but it also captures the hectic and sometimes hilarious moments of online multiplayer gameplay. Over the top action sequences combine with some nice direction on behalf of Kobbs to make for the most enjoyable Lego movie I’ve seen in quite a while.

    picture-2

Unfortunately the youtube video was taken down (youtube is really starting to become a nightmare for blocking things) but luckily it’s still available thanks to the guys at GameTrailers.com. So check it out below!

    2) The Hobbit

Ain’t It Cool News reporter Quint has been giving updates from the set of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. I was a massive fan of the Lord Of The Rings movies so obviously I’m giddy to see what Jackson does with Tolkein’s material this time round.

    hobpjtrollshaw

Jackson has been doing some great behind-the-scenes blogs himself. In fact, I think it’s kind of amazing that so far he has released 45 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage. It’s really a testament to how much Jackson respects the fans that he’s willing to give such an advance look. Of course, they keep lots secret but I love seeing film crews work so it’s a delight to watch.

Here’s the first video if you’re too lazy to go to the channel.

    3) Avenging Spider-Man

The first Spider-Man comic I’ve bought in 10 years (and considering he’s my all time favourite comic book character, that’s a long time) and it’s all Joe Madureira’s fault.

    detail

God damn, he draws a good Spider-Man. It’s slightly cartoony but has so much energy and character. It fits perfectly for this kind of book too. It’s a continuity light, action heavy, team-up book. Spidey gets to hang out with some of his Marvel friends and beat-up bad guys while wise-cracking along the way. The first issue was released this past month so jump on now. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

    4) WWE Cat Wrestling

Do you like kittens? Do you like wrestling? Then you’ll love kitten wrestling!

    5) “Twas me Burfday yesturday”

That was both a highlight and a lowlight. I’m now officially 28. It’s been a great year and I can honestly say I’m happy with how things are going in my life right now. So yes, being alive is one of my favourite things of November. Deal with it.

  • Video Interview: Rhett & Link

    rhettlink-01.jpg

Today, we’ve got a special spotlight on the interweb singer-songwriter/comedy duo, Rhett & Link. Below you’ll find a featurette giving you an overview of the guys and their work, followed by a 4-part interview. Wrapping things up is a music video for their song “All Rising”, made by Quick Stop’s own Bonnie Rose – who you might remember as the winner of the “Colbert Report Green Screen Challenge“.

Bonnie pitched this look at the guys to me, and I said “Sure…” (as is my usual mode of command). Here’s the story behind her video – and the interview – in Bonnie’s own words…

Sometime last year, someone on the neilinnes.org message board started a “What YouTube videos are you currently watching?” thread, and someone posted Rhett & Link’s “Fireworks” song on there. I clicked on it and instantly fell in love with the song.

I thought it was a real country song and they were a real country band.

I recorded it off You Tube into an MP3 and had it there on my rotation for a few months. Then one day, my sister was in the room when it came on and I said, “Sharon, this is a country song I actually like.” She listened to the whole thing and she too instantly fell in love with it. Then we both went off on our separate computers and looked them up to see what else they did.

That’s when I found out they weren’t a country band.

I watched a lot of their videos and loved a lot of them, but I thought the American Idol song was particularly brilliant. I had been wanting to do an animation project, so I thought I’d do an animation to that.

    And so I did.

It took me about a month to make it, working 4-10 hours a day. Then I posted it one night as a video response on You Tube to their own American Idol song video. The next morning I got an email from Rhett saying it was the best video response they’d ever had and would I be on their web show that week…

So I did. And that was fun.

But the Rhett & Link muse was still burning strong inside me, and so I came up with the idea to do this thing. Then I asked Ken and he said, “Okay.” Then I interviewed them, they video taped it and sent me the raw footage, and two months later, here you go.

    The end.
