    SEPTEMBER

    lucyline.gif

Phew! September has been a wild one. I’ve been running around like a headless chicken for the majority of this month. But, I’ve been lucky enough to perform on stage in front of hundreds of geeks at Dragon*Con and will soon be in a play in Dublin so it’s all a good sort of stress.

Don’t worry, I know you didn’t come here to hear about my life, you want internet fun things! My list for this month starts…… NOW!

    1) Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)

For fans of Flight Of The Conchords the New Zealand Red Nose Day this year was an extra special event as it saw the semi-return of the band. They have been very quiet lately, with them both doing seperate projects, but they decided to help the charity event by contributing a song. The lyrics of which, were crowdsourced from some very cute kids.

You can see the song, plus the damn funny creation of it, by watching the video below.

I particularly love the awkward moment when the new Muppets movie comes up in conversation.

    2) Whose Line Online

One of my favourite comedy things ever is the improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The show was in the UK for a number of years before Drew Carey took up the show in the States and I lapped it up like milk. Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Ryan Stiles, and Tony Slattery were comedy uncles to me.

    wliia

I was recently pointed towards the rather wonderful whoselineonline.org which has archived all the shows from both sides of the Atlantic. But, surprisingly for me, it also contains the pre-TV show radio shows. That’s right, like all good comedy shows, it started on BBC radio first. Starring such wonderful people as Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French, Griff Rhys Jones, and tons more.

So check it out by CLICKING HERE.

    3) Zombocalypse

This game is as addictive as the title is ridiculous. It’s a simple premise, shoot zombies in the head and keep shooting zombies in the head until you die. You start off with a machete and can pick up weapons as you go.

    zombies

There are power ups and special weapons like helicopter attacks that you can utilise. I find the dual pistols particularly satisfying.

It’s a great time killer so if you want to kill some, along with zombies, CLICK THIS LINK.

    4) Dragon*Con

Look, there is no way to fully express my feelings for Dragon*Con. This year was my 5th outing and as always it was an amazing time. The 4 days of the Con often feels like 4 weeks but as soon as it’s over I miss it.

One of the best thing about Dragon*Con, and one of the things I think it does better than any other Con, is all the awesome cosplayers. How could I give you even a glimpse into some of the 52 thousand maniacs who attend? Well, why not put them all into a Gangnam Style parody video.

That’s what Minh Nhat Bui did and what a great job they did of it too. So check out the video below. It’s the closest thing to being there I could find.

And because it deserves to be done:

    gandalf-approves

    5) Ben Folds Fraggles Five

In further evidence that Chris Hardwick is somehow living the life I was meant to be living, his Nerdist channel has taken the hands of fate to unite Ben Folds Five and Fraggle Rock in one music video.

If I’m honest, it’s not the best BFF song I’ve ever heard (I say this, yet two days later and I’m still singing the song to myself) but I’m glad to see the band back together and it’s just damn fun to see the Fraggles running around causing mayhem as is their wont.

    AUGUST

    lucyline.gif

Hello my lovelies. I’m in particularly good form at the moment as I’m about to travel to Atlanta for my 5th Dragon*Con. Both myself and Ken will be there regaling you with panels and such so do please join us.

In the meantime, why not take a perusal at the things that particularly tickled me this month online.

    1) Bad Song Made Good

Listen, we’re all sick of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”. Even if the internet didn’t manage to kill it with memes and parodies, the amount of radio play it received alone would have made it the ear-worm to make you commit suicide.

But you know what? Bad things can get better. And if you get The Roots and Jimmy Fallon together with a bunch of classroom instruments to cover the song, it just becomes amazing, no matter how bad it originally was. So here, enjoy the best version of this song you’ll ever hear.

    2) JG Thirlwell In A Record Store

JG Thirlwell is the genius behind the music of The Venture Bros TV show. He creates some classic soundtracks so when he is asked to shop in a record store and tell us about his picks… well, you know you’re in for a treat.

No, I hadn’t heard of any of them either.

    3) Life On Mars

This is not just my favourite thing, but it should be humanity’s favourite thing this month. Yeah, motherfucker, we landed a big-ass rover on Mars. Recognise.

    picture-2

Would you like to see a 360 degree image of Mars? Of course you would. The above image is just a small part of the awesome full picture that you can see by CLICKING THIS LINK.

What I really love about it is that it’s interactive so you can look anywhere around, even at the rover itself! And if you don’t view it in fullscreen you’re wasting all of our time.

    4) You’re Doomed At Dragon*Con

As I said earlier, I will be at the biggest fan-run convention in the world very soon and as it is now less than a week away I thought I would share this little guide to the convention I did last year with JJ Hawkins. It’s the best guide out there for any newbie to the Con and I’m not just saying that because I’m awesome, but it is partly because of it.

    5) Oh My Dayum

Daym Drops is a YouTuber of glorious bliss. He eats food in his car for your viewing pleasure (and his eating pleasure). For some reason it’s incredibly entertaining to watch him go nuts for the fast food he is consuming.

As with anything great on YouTube, the auto-tune-the-news folks have gotten their hands on it and turned it into a musical wonder. I think it’s worth leaving you on this month. Enjoy.

    August

    lucyline.gif

I don’t know about your area, but the weather this summer has been crap. August especially so. Which means there is no better reason to revel in some of the madness the internet has brought us in the last month.

    It beats going outside.

    1) Astronaut Suicides

No, I’m not sick. I don’t revel in the death of others. This is actually the title of an art project by Neil Dacosta, a photographer with a point to make about NASA’s lack of moon exploration.

It’s a series of photographs taken of an astronaut who isn’t taking the news very well. Here we see the astronaut reading about the story.

    astronaut_suicides_neil_dacosta_01

Then, as the title suggests, we are shown a number of different attempts to end it all. Here are two of my favourites.

    astronaut_suicides_neil_dacosta_03

    astronaut_suicides_neil_dacosta_12

You can see all the pictures and in their full size by clicking THIS LINK. Despite the dark subject matter, they’re really fantastic looking photos and make an interesting protest towards the NASA budget cuts.

    2) The Lonely Island – Threw It on The Ground

I’m probably not exposing a hidden gem, considering that at the point of writing this the video has accumulated 4,444,404 views (wow, that is a lot of fours) but this is a list of my favourite things after all and for that reason, it qualifies.

It’s not the best Lonely Island song either, not by a long stretch, but like others it is an ear-worm that you’ll find yourself humming a lot. I also actually laughed out loud at the phone bit. Enjoy!

    3) Mattias Inks

Remember Jesse Lonergan and his comic sketches I had talked about before? Well he tipped me off to another sketch blog which he adores and now I do to. http://mattiasa.blogspot.com/ is the home of Mattias a Swedish illustrator with an amazing talent.

Just check out this “doodle” in his moleskin book.

    4) Civilization Wars

Miniclip has created another game this month worthy of wasting your time. This strategy game is based around the idea of raiding buildings and controlling the land. It pits the Aztecs, the Romans and the Chinese empire against eachother in some sort of strange alternate universe where this was going to happen.

    game1

Unlike some stategy games, you have to be quick on your toes if you want to win. Each level starts with a mad dash to cover as much ground as possible and steal the empty buildings before your enemy does. Then it’s time to try and take your opponent’s base with an attack dependant on having the most troops.

    game2

You can employ some magic attacks too but I found that building up the stats of your troops after each round can be sufficient in taking down most enemies.

There are some big bosses which are quite difficult because they are timed challenges. So again, a frantic gameplay experience can be found at every turn with this one.

    game3

There are lots of extra modes that you can unlock along the way, like Zombie mode, which really stretches the replay-ability of the game. To give it a go and waste away the hours, like I did, click this link here!

    5) Shameless Self-Promotion Time!

Coming up very soon is Dragon*Con in Atlanta, Georgia. This year once again both myself and Ken Plume will be doing some panels for your entertainment. I’ll just quickly plug the two we’re doing together as to give you the full list of our individual ones would take far too long.

So if you’re there please pop in to say hello at the following:

    FRED Panel-Palooza-Extrava-Thingee-a-Doodle
Time: Fri 04:00 pm (Length: 1 Hour)
    Location: Regency V – Hyatt

FRED Presents Yet Another Panel About Doctor Who
Time: Sun 01:00 pm (Length: 1 Hour)

Rumour has it we’ll even have an actual dragon there. Rumours.

  • Ken Plume & FRED’s DragonCon Schedule!

    soapbox-header.png

Many have asked to know exactly what panels I’ll be guesting on and MCing this coming weekend (September 3-6) during Atlanta’s supermegamassivegeekorama DragonCon.

Below, you’ll find a list of the panels, the official DragonCon descriptions of said panels, and my commentary on what actually may or may not be happening.

PLEASE NOTE: I will not only have copies of my children’s book THERE’S A ZOMBIE IN MY TREEHOUSE with me and available for sale, but I will also have a handful of SUPER-RARE CDs with a “fan”-chosen selection of Crapoke tracks. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. All you have to do is have cash on hand, come up to me, and say, “Hey Ken. Where’s that CD of Crapoke? I’d like to buy one.” And with those magic words, A CD SHALL APPEAR, we shall exchange your cash for it, and our transaction OF AURAL LOVE shall be complete, leaving each of us to carry on with our lives, a little richer for the experience.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: I will have a limited amount of OFFICIAL FRED BADGES to give away during the con, COMPLETELY ARBITRARILY. You can come up and ask for one, which may or may not secure you one of your very own. Or you may win it during a panel. I JUST DON’T KNOW.

    dragonconfred.png

    lucyline.gif

    And now, the schedule:

    Title: Ken P.D. Snydecast
    Time: Fri 10:00 am
    Location: A601 – A602 – Marriott (Length: 1)
Description: Ken Plume and Dana Snyder present a panel full of surprises, prizes, and more. Much, much more.

Yeah, so, this is pretty much what it says on the tin. Me and (quite possibly, though I’m not entirely sure) Dana Snyder will be in attendance, doing things. Strange things.

    lucyline.gif

    Title: FRED Entertainment
    Time: Fri 11:30 am
    Location: A601 – A602 – Marriott (Length: 1)
    Description: Stuff happens.

To be honest, this one’s a big question mark. I know that some Irishmen will be there, and maybe some other people. Then we’ll probably all build a love bomb.

    lucyline.gif

Title: A Spotlight on Bill Corbett
    Time: Fri 01:00 pm
    Location: A601 – A602 – Marriott (Length: 1)

    Moderator / MC for panel
Description: Join MST3K and Cinematic Titanic’s Trace Beaulieu along with artist Len Peralta as they discuss their upcoming children’s book.

I’ll be participating in this one as well. Oh, and did you know that Len Peralta is also the artist of THERE’S A ZOMBIE IN MY TREEHOUSE? Pick up a copy of that at the same time you get your copy of Trace & Len’s wonderful new tome.

    lucyline.gif

That’s right – Joined together at DragonCon for the very first time are Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl, and J. Elvis Weinstein. We’ll have a bit of a panel, show a film, and then have a massive merch and autograph session afterwards, so bring cash. Lots of cash. How do you like them apples?

I’m back moderating the Venture Bros. panel again this year, because my “good friends” Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer like to torture me. But I have a plan this year… Oh yes, I have a plan… And it has nothing to do with pies, so don’t even go there.

Title: Nuts on the Road: The Quiz Show
    Time: Sat 10:00 pm
    Location: International North-South – Hyatt (Length: 5.5)
Description: Truth, lies, improv and general silliness are the order of the day when all your favorite games from TV shows you’ve never seen explode live on stage!

Ah, this is the big one. I’ll be co-hosting this devilish behemoth with my good buddy Widgett Walls, and it will feature no less than A DOZEN special guests forced to become contestants in a GAME OF DEATH. No pies. UNLESS THEY’RE DEATH PIES. But we’ll surely be all out of them after the Mystery Science Theater panel. REGARDLESS, DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT.

Location: Capitol Ballroom – Sheraton (Length: 1)
    Moderator / MC for panel
Description: Tom Servos United! Join Josh Weinstein & Kevin Murphy for an intimate look at our favorite gumball machine robot.

Following up on last year’s titanic mano a mano chat between Mystery Science Theater’s Crows, Trace Beaulieu & Bill Corbett, this year I’ll be moderating a retrospective discussion between the two men behind that other ‘bot. NO DEATH PIES.

Title: MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: Meet The Mads
    Time: Sun 02:30 pm
Location: Regency VI – VII – Hyatt (Length: 1)
    Moderator / MC for panel
Description: In the not too distant future, this clutch of baddies tortured hapless Joel, Mike, Crow & Tom. Spend time with the folks behind Dr. Clayton Forrester, Pearl Forrester, Dr. Erhardt, TVs Frank, Brain Guy, & Bobo.

My final MST3K panel is a spotlight on the villains who would subject Joel, Mike & The Bots to those horrid films. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime gathering, and BRING YOUR OWN DEATH PIES.

    Title: Rifftrax Live…sortof
    Time: Sun 05:30 pm
Location: International North – Hyatt (Length: 1)
    Moderator / MC for panel
Description: Join MST3K vets and Rifftraxians Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy as they provide you with a screening of some classic riffed short subjects as well as hang around to answer your questions!

This is me, making sure everything runs smoothly, and that none of the complicated internal mechanisms that power Kevin break down mid-show. This ain’t Showbiz Pizza.

    Title: Dragon*Con Has Talent
    Time: Mon 01:00 pm
Location: Centennial II – III – Hyatt (Length: 2.5)
    Judge for panel
Description: Who could possibly be the most talented con-goer out there? Come find out and maybe pick up a talent or two while you’re there!

Okay, this final one was a last minute addition, and finds me as one of the judges of an event that will probably be 15 shades of goofy, and I will be tired and punchy. What better way to end the con experience? I WILL ALSO HAVE FRESH DEATH PIES.
