    SEPTEMBER

    lucyline.gif

Phew! September has been a wild one. I’ve been running around like a headless chicken for the majority of this month. But, I’ve been lucky enough to perform on stage in front of hundreds of geeks at Dragon*Con and will soon be in a play in Dublin so it’s all a good sort of stress.

Don’t worry, I know you didn’t come here to hear about my life, you want internet fun things! My list for this month starts…… NOW!

    1) Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)

For fans of Flight Of The Conchords the New Zealand Red Nose Day this year was an extra special event as it saw the semi-return of the band. They have been very quiet lately, with them both doing seperate projects, but they decided to help the charity event by contributing a song. The lyrics of which, were crowdsourced from some very cute kids.

You can see the song, plus the damn funny creation of it, by watching the video below.

I particularly love the awkward moment when the new Muppets movie comes up in conversation.

    2) Whose Line Online

One of my favourite comedy things ever is the improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The show was in the UK for a number of years before Drew Carey took up the show in the States and I lapped it up like milk. Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Ryan Stiles, and Tony Slattery were comedy uncles to me.

    wliia

I was recently pointed towards the rather wonderful whoselineonline.org which has archived all the shows from both sides of the Atlantic. But, surprisingly for me, it also contains the pre-TV show radio shows. That’s right, like all good comedy shows, it started on BBC radio first. Starring such wonderful people as Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French, Griff Rhys Jones, and tons more.

So check it out by CLICKING HERE.

    3) Zombocalypse

This game is as addictive as the title is ridiculous. It’s a simple premise, shoot zombies in the head and keep shooting zombies in the head until you die. You start off with a machete and can pick up weapons as you go.

    zombies

There are power ups and special weapons like helicopter attacks that you can utilise. I find the dual pistols particularly satisfying.

It’s a great time killer so if you want to kill some, along with zombies, CLICK THIS LINK.

    4) Dragon*Con

Look, there is no way to fully express my feelings for Dragon*Con. This year was my 5th outing and as always it was an amazing time. The 4 days of the Con often feels like 4 weeks but as soon as it’s over I miss it.

One of the best thing about Dragon*Con, and one of the things I think it does better than any other Con, is all the awesome cosplayers. How could I give you even a glimpse into some of the 52 thousand maniacs who attend? Well, why not put them all into a Gangnam Style parody video.

That’s what Minh Nhat Bui did and what a great job they did of it too. So check out the video below. It’s the closest thing to being there I could find.

And because it deserves to be done:

    gandalf-approves

    5) Ben Folds Fraggles Five

In further evidence that Chris Hardwick is somehow living the life I was meant to be living, his Nerdist channel has taken the hands of fate to unite Ben Folds Five and Fraggle Rock in one music video.

If I’m honest, it’s not the best BFF song I’ve ever heard (I say this, yet two days later and I’m still singing the song to myself) but I’m glad to see the band back together and it’s just damn fun to see the Fraggles running around causing mayhem as is their wont.

And that’s it! My favourite things of the last month.

  • Weekend Shopping Guide 8/27/10: Boss Hurley

    weekendshopping.png

The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the FRED Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

(Please support FRED by using the links below to make any impulse purchases – it helps to keep us going…)

Bundled together for easier fan purchase (and because the boys claim that there will be no more) Flight Of The Conchords: The Complete Collection (HBO, Not Rated, DVD-$49.98 SRP) brings together the pre-existing 1st and 2nd season releases, with all of their bonus features intact, and adds the previously unreleased 30-minute One Night Stand performance that launched it all.

    thinkgeek-01.jpg

Oh, I’m a sucker for a novelty instrument. I really am. It’s sad, really… I simply have no control when presented with a unique, goofy musical instrument. So what’s the latest object of my affection? The Meldoyhorn ($29.99). Yes – It’s an air-powered keyboard. And it rocks.

    thinkgeek-02.jpg

If you would like a perfect example of how now to end a series – and don’t have your copy of Buffy: Season 7 handy – be sure to dive into the awkwardly uneven and completely unfulfilling 6th and final season of Lost (ABC Studios, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$79.99 SRP). If it wasn’t the stop-start meandering of the storyline (and the infuriatingly poorly written and last minute flashback episode – you know which one I mean), it was the laughable resolution. Sigh. Well, at least the high definition set looks and sounds great, and sports audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, and a newly-produced short more interesting than anything found in the season, as Hurley & Ben shut down Dharma in “The New Man In Charge”. Just give me THAT show.

    blankguide.gif

Starting with Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits (Image, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$17.98 SRP), independent film in the UK during the early 1980’s was largely personified by Handmade Films, the film company cofounded by George Harrison and Dennis O’Brien. Now, in the digital age, a quartet of their classic catalogue titles are making their way to high definition. In addition to the aforementioned Time Bandits, we get Blu-Ray editions of Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, & Withnail and I (Image, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$17.98 SRP each).

    blankguide.gif

I haven’t really taken in much of the new version of the franchise, but the single-disc release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles Forever (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$16.99 SRP) will certainly appeal to old school fans, as it features a cross-dimensional team-up of the modern Turtles with the much-beloved late-80’s animated versions.

    blankguide.gif

I’m always fascinated by documentaries that illuminate a slice of history that’s been largely forgotten, and such is the case with Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg (Docurama, Not Rated, DVD-$29.95 SRP), which looks at the life and career of radio & TV pioneer Gertrude Berg who, long before Lucy, created and starred in a very successful radio sitcom that made the transition to TV with equal success, but has been forgotten since. Bonus materials include an audio commentary, episodes of Berg’s sitcom The Goldbergs, Berg’s guest appearances on Edward R. Murrow and Ed Sullivan, additional scenes/interviews, and more.

    blankguide.gif

It’s an indie comedy through and through, but at least $5 A Day (Image, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.98 SRP) features Christopher Walken as Nat, a con man and deadbeat dad with a terminal illness who hijacks his son for a cross-country journey to an experimental treatment, with only the titular amount of cash to get them there. Bonus features include interviews, trailers, and galleries.

    blankguide.gif

Fill this weekend’s musical needs with a pair of new releases sure to keep the energy level high – The Dandy Warhols: The Capitol Years 1995-2007 (Capitol, $11.98 SRP) and a remastered edition of The Sex Pistols: The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle (Virgin, $19.98 SRP).

    blankguide.gif

I guess someone, somewhere had a desire to abandon the Bruce Timm-Paul Dini Batmanverse and return the Dark Knight to his campy Silver Age period with Batman: The Brave and The Bold (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP), which gets a DVD release for the first half of its debut season. The 2-disc set contains 13 episodes, but zero bonus features.

    blankguide.gif

A trio of History Channel series get season releases… But which ones are they? Well, there’s the complete second season of Pawn Stars (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$24.95 SRP), featuring 32 episodes plus additional footage. Then there’s the 3rd season of Ax Men (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$34.95 SRP), with featurettes and additional footage. Finally, there’s the 5th season of Gangland (History Channel, Not Rated, DVD-$34.95 SRP), which looks at 11 of the country’s most dangerous gangs.

    blankguide.gif

With The Universe: Our Solar System (History Channel, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$29.95 SRP), viewers can go on a guided tour throughout our solar system and beyond, and is a beautiful primer for anyone – kid to adult – with a hankering to hunker down with some fascinating science.

    blankguide.gif

The folks at the Warner Archive have dug up and remastered the Cary Grant drama None But The Lonely Heart (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$24.95), in which Grant actually plays a cockney and co-stars alongside Ethel Barrymore.

    blankguide.gif

Nickelodeon wants to which everyone a very Happy Halloween (Nickelodeon, Not Rated, DVD-$16.99 SRP) with this single disc collection featuring 6 Halloween-themed episodes of their various series – everything from Dora The Explorer to Yo Gabba Gabba.

    blankguide.gif

High schools over but the drama keeps rolling along in the 3rd season of Gossip Girl (Warner Bros., Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 SRP). But that shouldn’t surprise you, right? I mean, it is a soap. And it’s still running. Hence – More drama. The 5-disc set contains all 22 episodes, plus featurettes, music videos, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

    blankguide.gif

We’ve taken a few weeks break, but my nephew and I are back building another LEGO project – and this time it’s Darth Vader’s Tie Fighter ($29.99), courtesy of the fine folks at Thinkgeek. This one proved to be significantly easier than the massive ship we built last time, although it still was filled with scads of little niggly pieces. But, at the end of it all, not only did we have Vader’s iconic Tie Fighter, but also LEGO Vader to boot.

The weekend’s here. You’ve just been paid, and it’s burning a hole in your pocket. What’s a pop culture geek to do? In hopes of steering you in the right direction to blow some of that hard-earned cash, it’s time for the Quick Stop Weekend Shopping Guide – your spotlight on the things you didn’t even know you wanted…

(Please support Quick Stop by using the links below to make any impulse purchases – it helps to keep us going…)

Not as strong as their debut season but still better than most of the television landscape, Flight Of The Conchords: The Complete Second Season (HBO, Not Rated, DVD-$29.98 SRP) finds Kiwis Jemaine and Bret still searching for a paying gig in the wilds of New York. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Bonus features include a documentary, Dave’s Pawn Shop commercials, New Zealand consulate meetings, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

    thinkgeek-01.jpg

Get that 60’s psychedelic, groovy look on your very own wall with the Mathmos Space Projector ($79.99),which uses oil to project a moving image up to 1.5 meters big. Available in two different colors, it’s sure to be the hit of your next veg session.

    thinkgeek-02.jpg

From the “I’m delighted these have found their way to Blu-Ray” file come a pair of catalogue releases I’ve been anticipating seeing in high-def, one more so than the other. The one I’ve been champing at the bit for is John Carpenter’s cult classic Big Trouble In Little China (Fox, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$29.99 SRP), which contains an audio commentary, deleted scenes, an extended ending, featurettes, trailers, TV spots, a music video, and a gallery. The other flick is My Cousin Vinny (Fox, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.98 SRP), which is still a damn funny film. Bonus features include an audio commentary, trailer, and TV spots.

    blankguide.gif

While not as well known as the Warner screwball comedies of the era, Sony has brought together a pair of releases featuring eight of their own – the Icons Of Screwball Comedy: Volume One & The Icons Of Screwball Comedy: Volume Two (Sony, Not Rated, DVD-$24.96 SRP each). Volume One contains If You Could Only Cook, My Sister Eileen, Too Many Husbands, and She Wouldn’t Say Yes. Volume Two contains Theodora Goes Wild, A Night To Remember, Together Again, and The Doctor Takes A Wife. Both seta also contain a color Rhapsody cartoon and original theatrical trailers.

    blankguide.gif

Just in time for the flick’s 10th anniversary comes a 2-disc special edition of The Tigger Movie (Walt Disney, Rated G, DVD-$29.99 SRP). Bonus materials include a pair of new animated shorts, sing-alongs, music videos, and more.

    blankguide.gif

There’s something oppressively “awardsy” about The Soloist (Paramount, Rated PG-13, DVD-$29.98 SRP), which stars Robert Downey, Jr. as an LA reporter who discovers a brilliant street musician (Jamie Foxx) and tries to bring him to audiences. And get him off the street. And becomes his friend. You know… “Awardsy”. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a featurette, and more. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.99 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    blankguide.gif

Well, I guess if you’re going to cast Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as your lead, you’re going to have to amp up the action a bit beyond that featured in the original Escape To Witch Mountain, and that’s exactly what happens in Race To Witch Mountain (Walt Disney, Rated PG, Blu-Ray-$44.99 SRP), which casts Johnson as a Vegas cabdriver who finds himself on a bit of an adventure when a pair of aliens disguised as teenagers appear in his taxi. It’s a pretty fun ride that will give the kids something to be distracted by for 99 minutes. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, bloopers, and the Blu-Ray edition even includes a standard DVD as well.

    blankguide.gif

As the franchise hits its 25th anniversary, the 7th season DVD release of the animated series gets split into not just one, but four volumes – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, & Part 4 (Lionsgate, Not Rated, DVD-$14.98 SRP). Each disc contains not only a nice little bonus featurette, but also 3″ figures of all 4 Turtles, one per set. Cowabunga.

    blankguide.gif

As far as catalogue releases hitting high-def this week, there’ Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy (Touchstone, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP) and Billy Bob Thornton’s Sling Blade (Miramax, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$34.95 SRP), both of which are the work of gifted auteurs. The Waterboy is featureless, but Sling Blade carries over all of the bonus materials from the DVD special edition, including an audio commentary and featurettes.

    blankguide.gif

Try as I might – and golly knows, I have tried – I still can’t get into Tim And Eric Awesome Show Great Job! (Adult Swim, Not Rated, DVD-$19.98 SRP). I’m not a terribly big fan of comedy that’s bizarre and not terribly funny – give me both, and I’ll love you to death. This 3rd season disc is for those who dig it, and features 10 episodes plus featurettes, promos, deleted scenes, and a blooper reel.

    blankguide.gif

Hey! Kids! Animal Planet has got a fun DVD for you! Called Hippos & Rhinos (Genius, Not Rated, DVD-$14.95 SRP)! Not only does it have hippos, it’s got rhinos, too! Whodathunkit?!?

    blankguide.gif

Fans will probably feel a bit uncomfortable watching Dragonball: Evolution (Fox, Rated PG, DVD-$29.98 SRP), the big screen adaptation of their beloved Dragonball cartoon. This is a natural reaction to this tepid, rather cheap affair that, at the very least, has a nice schlock value. Bonus features include deleted scenes and featurettes. A Blu-Ray edition ($39.98 SRP) is also available, with identical bonus materials.

    blankguide.gif

Shunted to home video even though it was supposed to be a newly sane & stable Lindsey Lohan’s return to the big screen, Labor Pains (First Look Studios, Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.98 SRP) probably should have asked for an epidural. Lohan stars as a dead-end employee who schemes to keep her job by faking a pregnancy. Hilarity ensues. A Blu-Ray edition ($29.98 SRP) is also available.

    blankguide.gif

So there you have it… my humble suggestions for what to watch, listen to, play with, or waste money on this coming weekend. See ya next week…
