SModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don’t deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren’t). Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are SModcast. The best thing about SModcast? It don’t cost nothing.

I saw Z&M twice & was waiting for the “not-commentary” SModcast so I could go see it in the theater a third time while listening to it.
I think that Smod #68 may be a little bit too inside baseball for some people, but I understand where you’re coming from.
Why don’t you have a SMod with Robert Rodriguez & QT? They obviously had a similar experience with Grindhouse & I would pay money to hear the compare &contrast on that one.

Jesus Christ, these comments have been some of the harshest I’ve ever seen.
Comment by Jonas — December 20, 2008 @ 7:52 pm
1. Quit smoking pot. Regardless of every great 60’s rock album, it does kill creativity and intelligence. Period.
2. I’m going to put a gun in my mouth if you make another J&SB or Clerks film. I’ve loved ALL of your work (haven’t seen ZMMAP yet), but don’t listen to the fans wanting more J&SB please.
3. The American movie going audience is daft, and would rather see a talking dog movie than your films. Deal with that. Make a talking dog movie, and you’ll have a hit.
Comment by Arthur — December 20, 2008 @ 11:30 pm
Who cares what they talk about. stop thinking of smodcast as a prime source of information just sit back and laugh..they manage to make me do that a lot, even if they dont finish what they were talking about.. who cares.
Comment by Americant — December 21, 2008 @ 12:05 am
God forbid a man wanna make some dough. I Liked the movie and feel bad for it’s underwhelming performance. Dont worry Kev, the fans still care about your work.

You just complained about when foreigners generalize and insult Americans and then you become one of those foreigners insulting Australians. Get off your high horse.

Hey pussies, quit your whining. I’m sick of this BS and I only read about 7 posts. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it; it really isn’t more complex than that. Quit your bitching and stop acting like 13-year-old emo girls. It really is hard for me to believe you are men out there. I’ve never seen such pussies of men. Maybe you’re secretly Kevin-haters, I don’t know…
Either way, shut up.
Comment by Cucumber Jones — December 21, 2008 @ 3:18 pm
Role Models was better. tell kevin to stop crying about his millions of dollars.
Comment by Steve — December 21, 2008 @ 3:25 pm
I have never seen so much complaining about something that was free and not forced upon anyone. I can understand not liking an episode, but if they want to do an hour of scraping a chalkboard, it is still a free project that they do for fun. And as far as the pot remarks, I know plenty of intelligent, creative pot smokers. Ignorance makes you less intelligent, and a lack of influences is what dampens creativity.

I agree this would be the best SMod of all time. and would pay heavy out the ass to hear it. However, I don’t know how good of friends kevin is with them. new SMod tonight?
Comment by Matt — December 21, 2008 @ 5:44 pm
Kevin,
Please stop wallowing in the weed. You’ve had enough. Or at least don’t podcast high anymore. It makes you sound like a child.
Oh, also: Go outside and go for a walk. You’re going to spend your whole life never knowing what it’s like to not be a fat guy unless you move around once in a while. This is coming from a dude who loves you, and one who knows what it’s like to struggle.
Comment by Bil — December 21, 2008 @ 7:15 pm
In the Clerks 2 extras Kev gave QT a screening of clerks 2 (pretty sure Robert Rodriguez was there also, i would have to watch it again though), so they are friends to some extent. That would be a insightful smod. But what would it be called (instead of smodcast for that one episode) ? lol
Comment by MavLee — December 21, 2008 @ 7:16 pm
HAven’t listened yet, but have read many comments and have one myself…I know who Kevin Smith is…people I bring up his name to know who I am talking about…WHO THE FUCK IS APATOW AND WHY ARE WE OBSESSED WITH HIM?
btw – loved Zach and Miri
Comment by Rick E. — December 21, 2008 @ 7:32 pm

Shut the fuck up,he’s a grown man,he can do whatever the fuck he wants. If he wants to smoke weed,do podcasts high, and get deppressed it’s his choice. So fuck off.

I’m glad SModcast is back and this was a good episode. But I hope the episodes where Kevin is high are few and far between. They’re fun once in a while, but he’s not as sharp or as funny as when he’s sober. Much like weed itself, it’s great from time to time, but people who use it daily are just obnoxious.
Comment by Dave — December 21, 2008 @ 10:40 pm
@Dave
Agreed. I wouldn’t go as far as to say obnoxious. All other points conceeded. Mosier was the saving grace of this last one. Hope the critical comments don’t get taken badly.
As always greatful for these. Peace.

Comment by yanck — December 21, 2008 @ 11:29 pm
Arthur from about a dozen posts up, none of the points you articulate make any sense. Number one, if the man wants to smoke some weed, let him, its up to no one to judge him on that. Personally I enjoy the SMods that he isnt high better, but Im not going to bitch at him for actuallly smoking weed. Second, Kevin is successful because he was able to corner a demographic who enjoyed his humor. If he makes more movies with JS&B then there will be people who enjoy it and people who dont. If you dont like it dont watch it, but unless you’re Martin Scorcese, dont judge how he goes about his filmmaking.
Comment by Zac — December 22, 2008 @ 12:07 am
Z&M was 1st KS film in theater since Clerks (gotta love those DVD’s). A non-horror movie (regardless of quality) on Halloween is like opening Grindhouse on Easter weekend (wait, that did happen). Screw the economy, blame the DISTRIBUTOR. Title hurt ads, even outside Utah. Regsrdless of all above, this movie deserved better (as did Grindhouse). Hope your next film fares better. Snootches!
Comment by JayPeck — December 22, 2008 @ 12:09 am
@ Jaypeck
All of Kevin Smith’s films have been in theaters, unless your from outside the US.
Comment by Josh — December 22, 2008 @ 12:41 am
to Jaypeck:
Or if you were outside Europe, Canada, Australia.. Or if you blinked for some films like Jersey Girl, which was not as bad as it was built up to be.
Comment by gillian — December 22, 2008 @ 1:52 am
i am just guessing here, but i think part of the problem may be just the economy in general right now, along with when the movie opened. my family, like most families i know, is pinching pennies and trying to cut back on expenses. times are scary, and entertainment is a luxury when you need money to keep your house warm and your kids clothed and fed. my husband and i would have loved to go see this movie, but it was just a matter of money. last year we probably would’ve been able to go, this year money is much tighter. i don’t follow box office openings or grosses or anything like that, but i would not be surprised if films across the board are making less. people are losing their jobs left and right and most people i know are scared about what the future of this country has in store for us.

[…] In episode 68 of Smodcast, Kevin Smith and his producer Scott Moiser sit down and try and work out why Zack and Miri made far less money than it should have. Its a frank and heartbreakingly funny discussion, something so rare in an industry of bullshit press releases. They never really get to the answer, but they didn’t really need to. The Halloween release date ensured the target demographic for the film were out all weekend getting shit-faced, the word “Porno” did the rest. […]

The dvd sales will produce the money your pals promised, as for the discussion, side-splitting, outstanding banter. When you guys just keep it real and babble, that’s the stuff that makes me listen. Future Mosier was hysterical. Keep it real.
Comment by Fat Joe — December 23, 2008 @ 6:33 pm
Hey man, don’t let it get you down. I’m an indie filmmaker from Melbourne, Australia who is struggling to make his first feature with roughly the same money you had in Clerks. Look how far you’ve come man! So the numbers weren’t great – I thought it was an awesome film – and we have your original poster up at our cineplex! ^_^ You are living the dream man, don’t forget that. Viva La Stoners! Red State will knock the fucking box office away man – just make sure its released on the same day internationally so I can help ya hit the numbers. You’re huge in Australia man so if Zack and Miri had been released here you would have – an extra mill or two – but hey we’re a small population so 🙂 Rock on!

No one went to the movies that weekend!! The number one movie only made 15mill. Friday night Halloween is a terrible release day. Adults are with their kids trick or treating, costume parties or bars!!

p.s. the weekend total for all movies was only 86mill.
The following weekend it was 136mill.
Whoever decided to release the movie on Halloween should be fired or resign immediately!
Comment by croduck — December 27, 2008 @ 3:51 am
I skipped work on Halloween to see this movie during the day because I had to take my kids out that night. I think it is great and that the dvd will make lots of money. The economy is down and you have to remember that lots of people don’t have the money to go see things at the movies. So quit putting yourself down and remember you have a huge fan base and that lots of money is not everything! Go look with your diet. Your self-esteem will improve after you lose weight. I promise, it helped me! At least you have made the 30mil!

Money is not everthing Kev,from a guy who still at 27 live’s at home,no car,no girlfriend and loseing my hair, stop bitching.

HEY! i loved Zack and Miri and i would totally buy the DVD xD first of all…turned out to be the first “date?” i went with this girl and it turned out to be the funniest date i’ve ever been to. it’s one memory that we’ll never forget and we both thank you…both for giving us a very memorable and somewhat akward first date xD
i don’t care what anyone says, Seth Rogan was awesome, Elizabeth Banks was awesome, the rest of the cast like Mewes and Craig Robinson, hell even Randal! and everyone else…it was an awesome fucking movie.
look at it this way, it did ROCK the foundations of movie making. probably the reason why nobody liked it b/c everyone’s sense of humor died…and i notice it’s a growing trend. today’s teeny kid generation just don’t get this shit -_- it’s like i need a fucking blackboard to describe every detail of the joke just to make them understand the punchline. it’s these kids that have never seen Clerks or Mallrats or Chasing Amy.
kudos to you Kev/Mose, keep doing what you’re doing =D
Comment by Jay — January 3, 2009 @ 11:01 pm
i thought that movie fuckin’ rocked. i can’t believe it didn’t do more business than it did. maybe it’ll find its audience later on dvd, like mallrats. good luck guys.

you’re about to watch a snail crawl across the finish line and then die…. inches from it
lol scott you’re great
kevin you’ll win big with this bruce willis business, don’t sweat it
Comment by SomeDouche — August 28, 2009 @ 8:30 am
I’m confused. Didn’t this shit make $42 million gross and have a net profit of like $18 million? That would make it one of Kevin’s more successful (revenue-wise) films. Was it just a shitty opening that dragged everyone down?
