Fear not fellas. There is a second life on DVD. I’m a father of 4 and can’t find the time to get away w/my wife to the theaters ever. I do however buy a ridiculous amount of DVDs. When Z&M comes out it’ll be at the top of the list. I have all your movies on DVD and even ended up giving up originals to rebuy special eds. Anyway, you can’t always judge success by the numbers. I’m sure the movie is incredible and I can’t wait to see it. Keep the smods comin in the meantime.

don’t let the way this movie was received put you down Kev, you once said your movies kinda found their audience, and this movie will too, i have seen it twice, i think it’s amazing and i plan to see it again. you may not of grossed the way that you anticipated but things will pick up, they always do! Keep up the smodcast!

I saw Zak and Miri and honestly its really just not that good. Its not that funny. Maybe that is why it did not do that well. I think Kevin needs to move on from this type of movie. You have done it and done it better in the past. Move on! I knew people would be on here making excuses for Kevin Smith and I know you guys are big fans and you would support his shit no matter what. But to an average movie person, if you see that movie, it has like a couple of big laughs and the rest of it is not funny at all! The marketing was fine. The posters were fine. The title was fine. Remember controversey is a good thing. Its the reason people saw Dogma. Its the reason people saw Jersey Girl. Now because of the title, people are not going to see it? Give me a break. Word of mouth killed the movie.

Lick your wounds kevin. dust yourself off. get healthy and try your hand at making a drama or a horror flick. hell try romantic comedy again but stay away and off comedy like this.

Come on guys! you made a movie that everybody loved. The funniest movie you made. You opened at number 2 and it’s the high grossing movie you guys did. That to me is a victory. the movie was in the top ten for four weeks. What the fuck do you have to complan about! It was heartbrecking to me that you guys think this movie is a bomb cause it wasn’t. Great fucking movie.

Just a thought…is Kevin a victim of (a) modern technology and (b) his own generosity? Point being – I still love their work – but have had ZERO inclination to go to the theatre for the last two flicks – knowing full well that for an extra few dollars a short time after release I can purchase a DVD that I can watch in the comfort of my own home along with so many extras that the value added to the package makes it totally worth the wait.

If he didn’t put out such exhaustive home versions with documentaries, amazing commentaries, and other bonus features I would be more that willing to go to the theatre first…having said that – the quality home product makes me want to hold out just a little longer thereby skewing the over-important box office openings should this practice take place a few hundred thousand times over.

Alright, people, lay off the gentleman. Maybe the people who are telling Kevin to suck it up have never put their creative energy out into the world–that’s what I have to assume. When you spend an entire year throwing every part of yourself into making something, and then you’re hyped up by everyone around you to believe it will do well of COURSE you’re going to be disappointed. The people who are ragging on Kevin frankly disgust and sadden me. You’re not really a fan of someone if you’d lash out at them for being disappointed that something they worked so hard on didn’t do as well as you anticipated. Have you never not gotten what you wanted for Christmas? What spoiled brats you sound like.

As for you, Kevin…I hope things get better for you soon. For your own sake, sir, lay off the weed and try to diet. I know all your fans support you and are looking forward to seeing you rise above all of this.

“My movie didn’t make money…I did everything I could, but no one went to see it. Everyone’s getting laid off from their soul-sucking, horrible jobs that they don’t want but need, but I get to direct movies that no one watches…”. I paraphrased that, but I could only listening to the droning about how much your life sucks for two minutes (literally).

Look, jackass. You make silly, ridiculous movies. You like them, and a handful of people really like them. That’s the deal. You’re not Sidney Lumet, you’re not even Jon Favreau… nor do you want to be. Stop smoking weed, eat a salad every once in a while, and stop crying that no one gets you. You have a whole world of people that get you.

Yes, your last movie was good. You did every thing right. You had the right star, “porno” in the title (edgy? Maybe in the 80s), and blah blah blah. What, it’s your turn? Guess what, douchebag: you had your turn. It was called Clerks, and Chasing Amy, and Dogma, and everything else. You have a career, making movies that you like, with all your inside jokes and inconsistent directing. You get to work with your friends, eat all day (apparently), wear shorts all year, and complain, complain, complain.

Sit on the side of your beloved NJ Turnpike and watch every car go by. You see who are in those cars? Every single one of them would love to trade their life for yours. BTW, your old Jersey self would have kicked you in the nuts listening to you.

What do you want? You want everyone walking around in one of your fucking hockey jerseys? Sell them at the Gap? Then you’d complain how Hollywood made you sell out, how you wish you could go back to Red Bank, and just “be”.

Suck a bag of dicks, re-focus, get a job at a fuckin’ auto plant, and make a movie about that. Call it Auto-Erotic and have McLovin play “you”.

I hope you give that gift horse to someone else this Christmas. You’ve been staring at its mouth for so long, might as well be a dentist.

This movie failed because it was marketed wrong. First of all you should have filmed additional fake porno movies with Rogan (That wouldn’t be in the actual film) and released them on the internet. That would have got the buzz happening. And the poster should have been a full body shot of just Rogan in a fake porn outfit. (The pool cleaning guy etc.) If you did those two things you woulda made 30 mil in the first three days. But you didn’t, so go smoke some more weed. By the way you dudes should totally do another Jay and Silent Bob film, where they gotta go on a more ‘insane’ adventure. For example a mission to hell, or outta space, or they get sucked through a portal to another world. Imagine Jay and Bob meets Alice in wonderland. that would be cool. Big fan, keep up the good work!

Zack and Miri is the funniest movie I’ve seen this year. I almost pissed myself listening to Justin Long’s character. The DVD will be on my shelf the day it’s out. But this SModcast? I started it ecstatic with the hundred minute time stamp, but the longer it went on the more depressing it became. Then you cock teased us for another hour by not finishing your story. I don’t know what it feels like to create something great and have it perform worse than it rightfully should have, but dwelling on what went wrong will only result in another hour long downer in the next SModcast.

Make a good meal, smoke a joint, and watch your movie on that big fuckin’ TV of yours. And do it without thinking of the numbers or who fucked up where.

I’ve got to say, after waiting like 5 weeks for a Smodcast, the excitement I experienced when I finally saw a long awaited smodcast put up, something I checked on daily, was kind of destroyed by the whole vibe of the smodcast itself. I actually had to stop listening to it because it was making me too depressed. A first for any smodcast. or podcast. I love these guys too, which is why unlike some on here, I do feel for them, but listening to it I felt like a paralyzed person being pulled into a field of quicksand. however, becuase I like finishing things, I will probably resume tomorrow, which I’m sure I’ll kick myself for later.I swear, Kevins slow, deep, exauhsted drawl throughout the smodcast, and Scott’s sad-but trying to put a positive spin on it-attidtude made it hard to bear. Maybe this is what they needed, a place where they could just let it out and breathe.

I hope life is better for them soon, and that the usual and expected vibe of smodcast is revived.

Its good to here their view of this though! and it sucks when things out of your control limit the potential of an accomplishment. But it doesn’t change the accomplishment itself.

They should take pride in the fact that it was outside of their control, and they made a terrific film.

Let me start with saying I loved this ‘cast. It was bloody hilarious. Scott, your “impressions” are priceless. I only wish I could see them.

That said, I want to apologize to both of you. I could sit here and make excuses for why I didn’t see the movie (I’ve been in crunch for the game I’m working on since September; I moved to a new state in August where I don’t know anyone; I don’t like going to movies alone) but they all seem hollow. I make video games for a living, and I have to admit that I always feel a twinge of sadness when a friend of mine doesn’t buy my game. We’re not friends (though I’d like to think that, if we knew each other in real life, we would be; or we’d be mortal enemies who had to brandish weapons each time we saw each other), but I still feel like I let you down by not going to see Z&M, so I want to apologize. You may say “Well, that’s just one person, so it doesn’t matter,” but it does because it’s all based on small decisions. Yeah, I might’ve only added $10 to your total, but there might be a hundred other folks just like me who love your work and didn’t see Z&M for a variety of reasons. That right there is $10,000 dollars. And a hundred folks is a minuscule compared to the entire country, but those stats do add up.

So, again I’m sorry for letting you down. I sometimes forget there’s a person who is affected by my choices.

Holy fucking Christ, did someone actually apologise for not seeing the film? What the hell is that about?

This is certainly the best KS film since Clerks. However, it is far from being a film you should feel compelled to see. It is a giggle fest. Just a little too thin to support the story. Fortunately there are a few classic laughs along the way that save it.

    Wait for the DVD.

I think the Smodcast journey around the films is way, way, way better – now THAT should be boxed up and sold.

Where are people apologizing for this movie? I saw it. Thought it was good. These apologies and “don’t listen to the haters” has to stop.

I swear Kevin sounds like a total sell-out. I didn’t hear shit about the artist quality of the film or that kevin really “had something to say” like Chasing Amy.

All I heard was a goddamn studio exec sell-out wannabe cry about how the “parts didn’t add up to big box-office numbers.” Great, you’ve turned comedy in a formula for money.

And Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks, jesus, good job with getting suprising, orginal actors. They are so played out. As a filmmaker with his pulse on the entertainment world, Kevin should have known that by the time the movie came out he’d be getting those two’s sloppy seconds performances.

Come on, man. Think of something original. DISCOVER TALENT. Don’t just fucking rehash played our actors and then ride the “who’s popular with guys 18-24” train. If not, then become a studio fat-cat. I’m sure Bob or Harvey will put you in a junior exec program of some time.

Next film, do a biopic of George Carlin’s life. Do something meaningful, something you OWE to the world. Find some new TALENTED actors.

honestly, i liked the movie. i laughed a LOT. my friend’s that saw it loved it and also laughed ALOT. the movie had seth rogan, hell the movie had half the cast of 40 yr old virgin. it is hard to understand and i sympathize for kevin. that being said, kevin- you are the dvd midas man. i predict this movie is going to be huge on dvd. my only criticism of the movie (which, like everyone else on this board, doesn’t really matter) is the hughes like romance. in a movie entitled “zach & miri make a porno” the cheese is a little thick. in mallrats – the romance makes sense. chasing amy – obviously makes sense. even the sentiment in dogma is understandable. this movie didn’t need as much romance as it had. forget about opening weekends and what the weinstein’s think. make your dvd as thorough as you would for any of your bodies of work that you loved, as you say you do on this film. i just heard on the smodcast you might not do a commentary…..FUCK THAT. your loyal audience deserver the pleasure of hearing you speak over your body of work. it’s what you do best and ive already told people i can’t wait for the dvd because it’s going to be great. keep your head up, do what YOU WANT to do and fuck the rest of the people that constantly chime in with their 3 cents worth of no sense.

Smoking weed is every persons own choice. Like drinking coffee, or being vegetarian. ‘Yes’, those comparisons are absolutely apt.

I thought about this months ago (around the time of his death); and a Carlin biopic would be good. You’d have to cast Russell Crowe for the lead though . . . not exactly “unknown”. As long as you don’t cast Courtney Love as his fucking wife, then I’ll count that as a victory.

P.S. That movie would make fucking BANK! Loads of jizz . . .

I really felt like the emphasis of the movie (and of the title and marketing) was on the “Make a Porno” part and not on the “Zack & Miri” part. The strength of the other KSmith movies was character and dialog. Plots are perfunctory.
If you called it “Zack & Miri on the Edge…” then the emphasis and marketing would’ve been more on target. And you would’ve been more set up for future Zack & Miri/Andy Hardy titles.

  40. Chris Y. Avatar

They have a right to be upset as they want to be about whatever the fuck they want to be bummed out about.

Most of you live in the USA , a place where no matter how bad it gets it’s still not that bad compared to most places in the world. Most of you live a life that it far and away of better quality than any given person in some places. Yet I’m sure you still bitch moan and whine about your little set backs too.

Get off your high horse, you put your time into a project if it don’t go the way you wanted it too your going to be affected.

Besides how many times did one or both say, they know it’s a good job if you can get it, it’s just a bummer to see this outcome.

Bottom line is there are places they can go to read all of the hugs and kisses dick sucking posts ( like this one maybe?) and there are places they can go to get hard hitting sharp and cruel opinions. In the end neither of the two will matter, KS and SM will go on, make movies, make money.

I close with a loosely quoted segment from an evening with ” I go to the internet and see all of the posts about how I’ve made a flop and i’ll be out of work. I got news for you as long as I make even a little bit of money for the people who invest in my movies I’ll always have a job.”

That smodcast was very disturbing to listen too. I suspect that there won’t be many more left. It sounds like he is really fucked up in the head right now and sitting around feeling self pitty for himself and escaping into drugs. He makes so many excuses for his movies. I’ve never heard him take any responsiblity for any of problems he’s expereienced at the box office. I was always a fan of this guy because he seemed so honest and smart. It’s painful to see people you looked up too, falling apart at the seems. The movie was good, but I think it earned exactly what it should have. He makes mediocore movies and is lucky enough to make more money in a year than most of will see in a lifetime. I’m tired of listening to him brag about all his money and now listen to him whine that the movie underperformed. This guy is so far away from reality it’s unbelievable. It’s almost like an inside view into how and why people from hollywood fall apart and swan dive into self destruction. I was a huge fan of view askew, but after listening to this guy for a year on smodcast I don’t think I care anymore. It’s sad.

I have an idea of why the box office was lower than expected. It was playing at the same time as High School Musical. My proof รขโ‚ฌโ€œ I dropped my 13 year old off at the movies to see HSM with some friends and instead they snuck into Zack and Miri. I am sure they were not the only people underage to pull this trick, I did the same thing at that age. I paid my good money to see it and loved it. Sorry my kid saw it for free. Think of it this way. They have made the money back as of now. But there are plenty of places the movie hasnt opened yet. When it opens in AUstralia, there will be more money coming in. There is a massive Kevin Smith fanbase over here in Australia, and they will certainly go ad see it. There are plenty of places it hasnt been given a chance yet. And it will definitely make some serious bank when it hits DVD. No need to get all down and out about it yet. There’s still a long way to go. Kevin has never been fully embraced by America the way that Australians and British audiences have followed his work. While it would be good to have a bigger fanbase in America, the guy is never going to be a Spielberg. Just leaving out all the Askewniverse stuff isn’t enough to get people to go and see it. If you want a massive big opening, you need a blockbuster. And Kevin has never done that. If he wants the big success, he needs to devote more than a few months to a film. He needs to write and direct something huge. Something with gloss and explosions, and sexy women, action, and a huge story. Nothing clever. Americans don’t get “clever”. They are not about the subtleties. They like big, brash, and mindless. That’s why Role Models did well only a week later. It is mindless. You don’t have to feel anything for the characters in that. It’s why High School Musical 3, Madagascar, Mama Mia, Iron Man, Fantasic Four 2, Transformers, Indiana Jones 4, and every other massive hit of the last few years does well. American Audiences dont like to think. And while Zack and Miri isn’t a huge think piece, it’s confrontational nature (and the nature of all Kevin’s films) is enough to make people back away from it. I thought it was funny. I really enjoyed it. But Kevin has to stop making everything look like an indy film and do something big. Kevin is in the big leagues now. Everyone knows who he is, and what he does. Throw them a curve ball and do something different and huge. You aren’t an independant film maker anymore. Use the resources you have. Make the big budget blockbuster. leave in the subtle cleverness for us fans, but make the overall presentation something shiny and distracting for the wider audience. Us fans will always love your work, and we will understand if you have to do something drastic to get a bigger audience. I personally wouldnt see you as a sell out. But if you’re worried about being called a sell out, imagine how much easier it is to take when your pockets are stuffed with cash.

Stop consoling Kevin. He knows that people who listen to smod saw and liked his movie, for the most part. He also said he isn’t reading this shit, or anything online for that matter. You have to understand that this was his one shot at making a big budget, apatow-esque blockbuster. He sold out, and ended up grossing what he normally does. So, it wasn’t worth it. I watched Chasing Amy today, and may i say, “That’s the kind of shit, i want”. If Silent Bob isnt dropping pearls of insight in Red State, or whatever the fuck else movie Kevin gets paid to do, then fuck it. Z+M was funny, but not Kevin Smith funny.
