It’s odd that Mr. Smith thinks he landed his dream job becuase of his “talent”. Mentioning only someone like he can do it, I would say that it was more because of the time of Hollywood that let him reach the success level he is at today. Less competition and a wider open door allowed someone like Smith into the industry and people deserving a chance today with a lot of talent cannot get in becuase of the mouse hole opening that is left for this generation of film makers. Mr. Smith is right in one regard, luck had a lot to do with his success.

Jerry, the man watched Slacker and said “Wow a dialogue heavy script and the movie is fantastic. I can do that!” So he did it. Clerks look s a whole lot worse than a lot of other movies that came out that same year, there’s no luck there, dickhead. It was picked up solely based on it’s heart and intentions. That IS talent. Kevin wrote an amazing script that, if not pioneer, revitalized angsty dialogue-laden 90’s pulp restlessness. It sounds like, to me, that you’ve got a big ass chip on your shoulder and lost the ability to see the innocence in a lot of things. Clerks is genius. Nobody lucks out on a film that was made for 28,000 dollars about a bunch of convenience stop cashiers. It takes TALENT to make that work. Fuck off.

There is always luck involved, but clerks is still an amazing flick. But I feel it’s profanity-laced humor pushing the envelope at the time is what propelled it to great success and not it’s “heart”.

El Mariachi, Clerks and Slacker. Plenty of talent and hard work behind those flicks but they just happened at the right time. Timing was good.

I’ve seen a bunch of low budget independent flicks that are awesome but never got exposed the way those flicks did.
