SModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don’t deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren’t). Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are SModcast.

The best thing about SModcast? It don’t cost nothing.

SModcast 43: SMorpheus –

In which our heroes discuss SMod after death, and then descend into the Matrix to determine the reality of PodBabies, post-pod love, virtual weight loss, the power of a crappy life, and whether the virtual world makes a man happier.

[CONTENT WARNING] SModcast features harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Listener discretion is advised.

You’re question about reproduction in the matrix annoyed the hell out of me. It’s a far future human farm, why would they need to harvest sperm and eggs instead of just create a child from the genetic data of the 2 parents. My thought on it anyway, weird that this conversation would be the only thing to prompt me to make a reply so far…

I think if you have a baby in the Matrix it has to be real. Neo was once a baby, everyone in the Matrix was once a baby, and they are all able to take the pill and wake up in the real world…

First off I love Smodcast. This week’s discussion about the Matrix prompted some thought so here it goes…
Using Kevin’s premise that the “Tubes” are hooked up to Mosier’s junk for reproductive purposes necessary to the continuation of the human farming conducted by the machines, it is my thought that the matrix using the “relationships and sexual encounters” of those in the matrix to provide the ingredients needed to create more human beings. If Scott and Alex become pregnant and have a child in the matrix it would make logical sense in the long run for the system to use their (Scott and Alex’s) sperm and egg to create the child. I say this because the child itself will be connected to the matrix and will need an identity. If we recall Keanu’s character Neo was born in the matrix however his minds perception of himself was remarkably like his real self. Using his experience as a rule it would then be safe to say that a black child in real life sitting in one of those pods would be black in the matrix, therefore at least some degree of sorting would be needed otherwise when couple of a specific ethnicity have a child in the matrix and it shows up being a different race it would probably create discord for those individual minds. This does not even bring into account the myriad of hereditary factors such as hair and eye color, and general appearance. So again if for no other reason than to placate those minds in the matrix I believe that the child created would indeed be Scott and Alex’s child.

Awesome. I love the Smodcasts and you guys are very generous to entertain us for free — things like the Smodcast are what set you apart from the generally soulless Hollywood community.

Pretty entertaining this week. I really dug Mosier’s gohst impression. I was listening to it on the bus, some of the people my bus think I’m pretty weir when I’m laughing. But it’s all worth it.
I really liked the talk about The Matrix I thought the line “They had fuck.” was hysterical. But The Matrix will never top the Harry Potter episode, I love the Harry Potter series and you and Mos talking about it made it all the more enjoyable. Always good though. Thanks for another good one.

    Here’s my theory:
The parent’s obviously don’t actually have sex outside the matrix, since they’re both in pods God knows how far apart from eachother. Sicne the computers *grow* babies, they just program the matrix to make her pregnant, but she’s really not. The same goes for the fetus’s point of view. It would appear to itself that it was inside the mother’s womb, and within the matrix it would be.

I think that the machines follow everything that a person does and when two people meet and have sex they connect the pods of the couple and inject the sperm and egg into the goo that they are living in and the machines sustain the fetus in the goo but the program follows the nine months of pregnancy and applies the descisions of the “parents” to the baby in the far off pod as it grows older to simulate learning and growth in the real world.

Individual consciousness is created in the brain by selectively discarding unused neural pathways until what is left becomes the shape of that person’s individual mind, almost like carving a sculpture from a block of wood. So a child would have to have its consciousness shaped from birth rather than downloaded at a certain age. So it would make sense to assign a new individual to an existing human parenting unit.

I’m actually a little surprised you decided to speak about the Matrix in this week’s podcast, although I was pleased to see it as I am a very big fan of the movies (all of them).

I’m such a fan mostly because of the multitude of questions spawned from the trilogy, similar to those you digested in the podcast. The matrix can be viewed in fairly simple terms as well as a richly deep tapestry of philosophical queries.

But none of those questions are as entertaining as talking about Matrix fucking and making babies in a virtual setting. A pleasure to listen to as always guys, keep it up. Peace.

well there were children in the matrix that were awaken, cause they had mentioned that they normally only wake up children because they are more likely to accept the concept of the matrix since they have more open minds, and there were children bending forks and floating cubes and shit in the old ladies house

Doesn’t ANYONE remember the shot of the ant-like machines checking over the fetus pods? Right before the bigger machine sucked the artificial womb up into the storage space?

That AND the tubed up baby they placed in the empty pod, sealing it up and beginning to fill it with that goop?

Sorry to say Kev, that’s TWO scenes that kill the “virtual baby” theory, twice, in the FIRST movie!

Just discovered your Podacst. Been listening to many before – and I have been shooting a documentary about the New Media Revolution for three years. You guys are great. I’m a couple years older than you – but even though I was enjoying your show so much – the bit that put me over the top was the Six Million Dollar man and GI Joe bit. The day before – I was just talking to my best friend about this – and Referred him right away to your podcast.

Keep it up. This has been great entertainment between walking the WGA picket lines and shooting videos for United Hollywood. Thanks again.

Best discussion I’ve heard in ages. But some of Kevins statements did annoy me (sorry Kev).

They can have babies outside the matrix. There were main characters from the first film who wernt unplugged and had been born in zion.

They cant change there appearence in the matrix, Neo asks why he still looks like himself, and Morpheous calls it ‘residual self image’. You know what you look like so your brain projects that image in the matrix.

And yeah, if babies where just programs, you would not be able to wake them up, but then after a certain time no one would be left. Unles you do what kevin said and grow people till they were 20 and ‘input’ memories. But why do both? Why not do what scott mentioned and just grow a kid from the mothers egg and fathers sperm, ‘give’ that kid to them in the matrix and let them raise it. Its not like it will instinctivly know its not real, why the need for memory inputs?

Anyway, awesome podcast, keep up the good work guys.

The number of pods wouldn’t reflect how many people have lived, but rather how many people are alive currently, so there would be roughly 6 billion pods in total. And it is possible for the person in Pod 1 to be the same age as the person in Pod 8,000,002 because when someone dies their pod is taken by someone else, most likely a new born baby. And I’d assume that they have empty pods on hold to accommodate the steadily growing population.

Additionally, the humans are not being harvested to power the Matrix. They are being harvested to power the machines that populate the world. The Matrix only exists so the machines can generate power to survive, since the sun is all blotted out and all. With super smart AI you would think the robots would have figured out a way to un-blot out the sun, cuz then they could just kill all of the humans and not bother fucking around with the matrix.

if you recall they say that when you die in the matrix, you die in real life, so, those are the ones that become the food of the others, now, for the kids, they probably use cloning or some type of in vitro technology and the physical appearence is based on code sent to the parents… i think it’ll be something like this: you are born, inside a lab or something, and you become aware of yourself, there you give yourself a Physicaal appearence and thats the one they send to your parents, and that could be the explanation for the pregnant time (you spend 9 months developing a look) and for there your look will depend on your choices.

love the smodcasts guys BUT I was bothered because all I was waiting for was one of you to say, well, we were once babies, and we’re not programs, so obviously when you have a kid in the matrix it’s real, otherwise when your parents did the dirty and had you, you would be fake… that is, going by your logic that when you have a kid is it real or fake? the answer, you guys were kids once, now are you real or fake? that would eliminate everything you talked about in the smodcast, and the cast bothered me cuz thats the first idea I had, hahaha, but great job, I listen every week

It started out decently, Ghost Mos and what not, but then the Matrix talk and the amount of said content sucked. Worst SModcast to date in my opinion. On the bright side, you can’t hit a home run every time though, so the next one will be a step back towards the light. P.S. Release a SMod every Monday, I become disheartened when I show up to work, ready to listen and there isn’t new material to start off my week.

I’ve been prompted to interject a little sanity into this thread. First off its a movie. Just like in Jaws, analyzing why the shark eats the boat instead of going after far easier prey, it only makes sense when you say its a movie. Now If I were to extrapolate on the movie science, No the woman is not pregnant, no the baby is not actually made by the two people. There would be no reason for it. The residual self image or RSI is how they explain that people look different in the matrix. As is the case with adopted children, if you stick a kid in with two parents, tell the kid they are related, the kid will buy it. However if I contradict myself here you would have issues of race, if the baby has a residual self image, a black baby would still be black. So is the Matrix segragated, it would make sense, like a giant filing system. A machine depends on logic and order, so it would only make sense that the people would be ordered. I do agree with another poster I really doubt the machines are giving cyber scott a hand job to stick into cyber alex. It would be through some kind of test tube process. There are far too many variables in human pregnancy, to deal with live birth. Now my question is this, If the woman is pregnant in the matrix, do her breasts swell, does she put on a few extra pounds. The body can’t live without the mind, and there is a physiological component to that process. If you have sex in the matrix I would assume that the body would react the way it does during a wet dream, and you would be spraying down the inside of your pod.
One last thought, if the remains of the dead are liquefied and fed to the living, wouldn’t that lead to the disease cannibals can get from eating human flesh?

  47. marxmith Avatar

I always figured that it was Scott’s theory. That they combine the genetic material from two people in the Matrix and create a child, then they assign the child to those people. Also, perhaps fat people don’t metabolize the “nutrients” provided by the Matrix and grow fat in real life.

  48. Josh Avatar

I listen to you guys every week. I really dig the show and will continue to be an avid listener. Also can’t wait for Zack and Miri to drop.

Quick question for Kev though: I really do love every aspect of what it is you do, but something that always kind of leaves a sour taste in my mouth is how you sell a lot of set props and stuff on eBay. Obviously if you can make another buck on the side, by all means. But in my modest opinion, I think it comes off as a bit money-hungry. It’s not just that though. It has to do with not being able to get into an event unless you buy your book, etc. What’s with, man?
