In which our heroes get into a discussion of the white man’s lack of reclaimed cultural terms of endearment before launching into an even more in-depth exploration of cultural terminology, try to come up with words to hurt each other, turn their sights on sites that feature comments that aim to be mean for mean’s sake, read a very special piece of listener mail, debate the history of the Christmas Tree in relation to self-mutilation, and wrap up with another dip into the SModcast mailbag, the best Oscar’s ever, and a Bat-Quickie.

I don’t know about “cool” racial slurs for white people, but one I think is very offensive is white trash.

The main reason I find it offensive is that it’s exclusively used to refer to poor people. As if being poor is enough to judge someone inferior. I have no illusion of poor people being meek and humble, I grew up lower middle class and know that poor people are prone to ignorant ideas about race, sex, etc.; however, though it doesn’t excuse it, a lot of that hate and ignorance is a consequence of little education and struggling to make it in life. It’s easy to swallow the ignorant shit passed down from parents when you haven’t been exposed to other ideas on the subject.

Also, just the word white trash itself is horrible. You’re calling someone trash for fuck’s sake.

Hey guys, a little extra infor on the word Mulatto and why it’s considered offensive:
The word started being applied to people of mixed racial backgrounds because people thought that they were sterile. Mules are the sterile children on donkies and horses.

I have never been offended by any racial slur, or slur in general. white trash, honkey, cracker, fatty, dumb ass what ever what have you. First have to take in to account the person saying said slur. To care about what someone is saying, in my opinion, you first have to have respect for the person saying it. granted it is easy to say that being a white girl from the mid west. i disagree with the comment made before about poor people are prone to ignorance i am a very poor person it is the mind set you have that is important. i am tired of people using their economic background, their struggle to survive, or their parents for not being educated about things. we live in the age of the internet, information is at the tips of your fingers, it is time for people to take responsibility for what they say or do. in the end they are just words and as mothers say “words can never hurt you”.
Also the term “white trash” does not only encompass the poor that would be “poor white trash” “white trash” is just that a white person that is trashy. you could be rich and be trashy. Look at most of the female actresses employed today. They are white and they are trashy so they are in turn white trash.

Christmas trees were considered German. Those sorts of symbols in terms of Christmas are pagan. I think during WWI in Russia, Christmas trees were frowned upon because it was a German tradition. Obviously there was that animosity due to the war.

Anyway, I rarely get offended by racial slurs, considering few are directed at whites. I hate getting told I’m fat or I look like a girl, however.

I came I saw I smodcasted. In reference to the “Jersy Girl of smodcasts” comment, I have to say that was just wrong, it wasn’t their best work, nor their worst. I do have to admit I call one of my friends a honkey on a daily basis. I’m taking it back dammit. I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, either here or Myspace, but I listened to the critics, I never saw Jersy Girl because it was suposed to be so horrible. I’ve even heard Kevin making derogatory comments about the movie, so I never saw it. Then it was on TBS (or TNT who really cares though) and TIVO snapped it up for me. In a fit of boredom I watched it. I kept waiting for it to suck, and it never happened. I enjoyed it the whole way through (except that little girl had a creepy face and I would love to hear the thought behind casting her) Ben Afleck plays the fuckin shark! I love the fact that in the view askewuniverse the actors come back again and again. It gives everything a coming home again feeling. I can’t be the only person out there who hates change, and doesn’t want to be invested into a new cast every single film. I can officially say I’ve seen every Kevin Smith film, and liked each one for a different reason. The only problem I have is that Clerks II felt like Clerks II: The quest for more money, to paraphrase a line from spaceballs. What the hell do I know, I never made a movie that made 30 cents, let alone 30 mil. Keep doing your thing, and you’ll keep getting my dough.

Saying nigger or kike doesn’t make one prejudice or ignorant, but rather saying it as a means to insult a person of that background because of a dislike for their heritage is.

I have been a faithful listener since ep 1. I wish you weren’t posting on iTunes so much later now. I finally got my husband hooked on the smodcast. It’s the only thing that gets me out of bed on a Monday morning, and I am very grouchy when you miss a week.

This isn’t a response to this SModcast in particular, but just a question I’d love to hear addressed: In both commentary tracks on ‘Jersey Girl,’ Kevin refers to longer cuts and a “more Special” Edition of the film, to be released 6 months or a year afterwards. It’s been at least 3 years, and I’m curious if it’s anywhere on the near horizon, or if I should sit back and expect it to come at the 10-year mark.

If anyone on the Board knows anything, give a shout.

Kevin, please, spare us! I love the Smodcast, but decrying the whole dark = evil thing as some kind of hidden racist thing worked into the English language is ridiculous. It comes from the dichotomy of day and night, the latter being associated with “evil” because, throughout much of human history, nighttime was a more dangerous time, a time where you could fall victim to various predators and whatnot. The depiction of light as goodness and dark as evil has become an archetypal image and, get this, occurs in the poetry and literature of indigenous African people–i.e., African works produced prior to European influence on the region. If you think those who equate darkness with evil is somehow racist, then you are going to be making the case that indigenous African people are prejudiced against black people. That’s completely silly.

We took our daughter in to the pediatrician when she was born, and he said, “I think your daughter might have jaundice, but it’s hard to tell because she’s mulatto…” My husband and I looked at each other in disbelief, but since we knew the doctor pretty well, we let t slide! I was watching the Blues Brothers on TBS or some cable channel that replaces select words in movies. In the scene in the diner, Aretha Franklin (in the original movie) says, “We got two honkies out there…”. The version I saw replaced the word “honkies” with the word “hoodlums”. Why? I’m wondering who would make that decision and what was their motive?
