The good news is that I’ve accidentally started about half a dozen semi-promising new songs during all this (all of them rhyme though!) so I might be further on the way to starting a new LP. The bad news is that I have nothing to show right now (maybe a relief to some).

I can but try again for round 3! I do hope it’s a ‘subject matter’ challenge, or a given song title, or something.

We should these sorts of things to heart. My last ditch ended up better last round than it would have otherwise, but still … I like the phrase “eat away at your joy”

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2010/02/22/one-star-reviews-revisited/

Author John Scalzi has 2 of his works nominated for the Nebulas (for those who don’t know: awards for science fiction/fantasy stories, nominated by fellow sf/fantasy writers). In this article, he highlights the 1-Star reviews those works have received on Amazon.

Some of his comments on the subject:

I tried hard to avoid rhyming. This was tougher than expected. I have really TRAINED myself to have words just … “ring” even if they don’t exactly … rhyme. This was really a lot of exercise!

If you didn’t hear it when Dr. Demento made it popular again (35 years ago), listen to it now! Your funny bone will thank you.

There was an old farmer who lived on a rock
He sat in the meadow just shaking his
Fist at some boys who were down by the crick
Their feet in the water, their hands on their
Marbles and play things…

You get the idea.

This is all because Michael McKean Twittered that B-Rhymes site, isn’t it! My past lyrics are awful but at least they rhyme! How will I cope without my crutch?!

You could probably count virtually any They Might Be Giants or XTC song in this category, actually. And JoCo’s “Kenesaw Mountain Landis” and Neil Innes’ “Under The Evening Sun” are the best examples by previous Masters. What the hell to write about though? I’m severely blocked for new ideas…

Come back next week to see if I’ve failed miserably or not for my shadow entry! Oh, to make things even harder I’ve set myself one further limit – it must make sense outside of the competition in its own right (people here probably do that anyway – I need the extra reminder!). I sort of feel I threw Strawberry Fool away by not making it something I could go on to perform live, so I’m going to try extra hard to get a ‘proper song’ banked this time.

Oh, and I’ll try hard not to do a Beatles pastiche. If it turns out like that despite trying, I know I should just run off and join a tribute band…

I love the late, great Jo Stafford’s version, but can’t find it online. But you can’t go wrong with Billie Holiday, either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StNAmz7kpe4&feature=related

Do you mean just the end of lines can’t rhyme anywhere, or that no two words in the entire song can rhyme (except for repeated phrases)?

Thanks!!
