I thought I should add to the discussion of the BBC’s tape-wiping by pointing out that it was because of the licensing laws here at the time; I believe a recorded TV programme could only be played something like three times, so they saw them as being of no use. What’s really bad though is that Peter Cook himself was adamant that the series should not be deleted, so much so that he offered to pay for new tapes, but the BBC actually declined his offer.
