You just can’t get votes for it. I’m waiting until I see the challenge to decide whether I’ll submit a shadow or not.

If I understand the rules correctly, only the group with the highest vote total goes onto the next round to face the master, so this is probably our last entry. It’s been lots of fun, and it was great to be introduced to so many new artists. Hope to hear you all again in #5!

It appears that my computer ate the incomplete draft of my other, more serious, song (“A Minute of Your Day”), which might have been either better or worse than the one I uploaded. Regardless, I have uploaded what I have uploaded.

as for competing myself, it has crossed my mind. if i could get my buddy Jim on board than maybe… but i wouldn’t go holding your collective breath.

Well, the more I think about it — the more I think I won’t…

Last round, after reading that I came in sixth AGAIN (in your esteemed opinion), I had the idea to write a song called “Sixth” — all about trying to win one of your votes this round…

I had a lot of brainstorms. I considered…

… throwing in various musical “quotes”… (“God I hope I get it. I hope I get it!” “Will he like me?” etc.)

… using references to some of my songs from previous rounds… (“I know ‘Whispered’ was weird, but I really liked ‘All For This Moment.’ It was well done, ‘and it was so beau-ti-ful…’ But he didn’t like ‘hugging’…”)

… alluding to my next song… (“Synthesized orchestras reeling in glorious song” — which is also a sly Sondheim reference…)

… citing some of your previous comments… (“He said I have ‘great potential.’ What does that mean? And how do I reach it? And how do I know if he thinks that I have?”)

… and things like that. I probably would have included some variation on “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma,” and I might have even thrown in a little Billy Collins! (“I’ll show them how a professional does it!”)

All of this would have been included as a “bonus track” — like they used to hide at the end of cassette tapes. There would have been my Round 3 song, followed by ~40 seconds of silence, then a disclaimer section in lawyerly “legalese” where I explained that this bonus track was _separate_ from my Round 3 submission, followed by the bonus track itself.

I would have asked Ken to ONLY have this bonus track accessible by the playbar on the Song Fu page. It still would have been listed as a 1:00 play time — the download link and the zip file would have contained only the Round 3 song, and the link on my web pages also would have only included the Round 3 song proper. So only the people who were paying particularly close attention would have noticed that, even though my song had finished, the progress indicator still was only halfway along the slider bar…

However, the more I thought about it, the more I grew worried that some people out there wouldn’t “get” or appreciate the humor of it. (I still remember vividly how I inadvertently touched off a firestorm of protest with my spoken intro in Round 2 of MoSF#3.) Even though I would have explained that my bonus track was separate from my Round 3 submission in the “lawyerly” section, I didn’t want people to start crying foul — and to cement a reputation as a chronic, blatant rule breaker.

Plus — just a day after I read your comment about being a “near miss” and hatching this idea in the first place, Lex came along and promised a song extolling your virtues himself. (And you never know — he just may!) So just in case, I didn’t want to steal Lex’s thunder. (Additionally — I didn’t want people to have to wonder if I was really THAT insecure as to go “fishing” for votes — or rather, one PARTICULAR vote…)

So there you go. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments, as well as the fact that you continue to hold all of us to a high standard. Thank you for following our little Song Fu adventure — keep voting your conscience (as I know you will!) — and please do consider joining us as a challenger in MoSF #5! (There will be a #5, right Ken?)

🙂

Both songs are good, and with apples and oranges being what they are, I’m having a hard time picking between funny and sentimental.

Both songs are coming along nicely, though the funny one is currently closer to finished.

just a
sliver of a moon
like the
sliver of my heart
that she left me
when she left me
that daaaay!
i don’t know the reason
that we had
to part
but i’ll be
a’cryin’
every daaaay!

could easily be made into a one minute song if anybody wants to collaborate… 🙂

I think it’s probably the furthest away from Football Is Good it could possibly be. And that’s equally probably a good thing.

Anybody who wants to take a listen, it’s uploaded to Myspace. Friend me while you’re there, eh?

Fair warning: I didn’t send it to KP yet. I might do a little more mixing (possibly some recording, but probably not) so you aren’t necessary hearing my final submission. 😉
