I don’t even live in the same country, but my parents didn’t give me keys to the house either (although mine gave an “explanation”, they said I would only loose the keys then, unimpressed by the fact that I never lost anything), my father was a postman, the shades needed to be down (and there was nothing worth stealing too), even if no one was on the streets and wouldn’t have looked in anyway… Rationality wasn’t in very high regards. Must be a postal thing that obviously has international validity. 😛
